3.5 stars. I think my expectations overwhelmed my actual experience here. We had reservations for a Saturday evening and still waited at least 30 minutes after arrived. We grabbed drinks at the bar and honestly the decor and drinks were my favorite parts! It is such a well decorated, cute place. You just want to grab a cocktail and hang out. Both of the cocktails I had were great, service at the bar was a little slow but they were busy. We sat on the deck and watched the sun go down over the water which was beautiful. Our server was new and very enthusiastic. I was a bit underwhelmed by the menu, I guess I expected a bit more. As a table we got hush puppies and I avoided the butter since I thought it was spicy (I'm a spice wimp!). The Italian sandwich was ordered, a lobster roll, and the crab salad. I think the Italian sandwich was the biggest hit. I enjoyed our visit but I won't be rushing back, I'd much rather visit Kindred. read more

Very limited menu, and it won't let you do substitutes. No coffee or sodas, or even iced tea! All they had was water and hot tea and mixed drinks and beer. Because we couldn't substitute we're all in it having the hamburgers and one person in the group has food allergies and we said no seeds or nuts or pickles and the hamburger came out still with pickles on it, and on a seeded bun! A young waiter didn't really take time to listen to us We decided to have dessert as for two of us it was our birthday, and the waiter recommended the peach cobbler and told us that it was small, so we all ordered one each and the dessert that came out was huge and it wasn't a peach cobbler. It was a bread pudding with peach cobbler on top, and the bread pudding had no taste whatsoever! We assume the ambiance is better for those patrons who consume the many alcoholic offerings with a bar inside and outside on the deck. I did like Hello, Sailor. I've attended twice. They have great cocktails, and an amazing view of lake Norman! My only vice with this restaurant is their very small, very limited menu. It's okay if a menu is small, if it has some absolute standouts with at least a meal or two. However, nothing here really stands out above the rest. The food portions are also quite small for the price tag. I took my parents for my second time visiting, and my mom had trouble finding anything on the menu that she would like. You won't find much for kids, or picky eaters on their menu. But, for views on the lake, and a decent meal, it's still worth at least one trip. Even just for drinks! read more

We made reservations at 6:30pm and arrived on time and got seated the server came around shortly after but we haven't made up our minds. So we asked for a few minutes, that few minutes turned into waiting over 30 mins for the server to come back . The restaurant wasn't even busy , we still ordered hoping that the food would change our minds about the restaurant but it simply was just not good . The burger tasted like i could've gotten it at cook out and paid $5 for it instead of $17 . Viewsssssss! I live for some good eating with a view. Everything about this place i just love to pieces. Only complaint i have is we had a very hard time finding a parking space when we went. We were super excited by the themed decor alone. When you first walk in near the bar awaits a fun old school photo booth for you and your friends or love ones to enjoy and take photos inside of. The hostess asked if we would like to be seated inside or outside and of coarse we opted to sit outside so we can be on the water with the view and sound of the water. Good thing was the tables outside has umbrellas on them which was great so the sun wouldn't beam directly on us as we were enjoying our meals. Far as the food is concerned i kept it simple i ordered the Carolina shrimp calabash with black drum fish and for the side it came with the avocado coleslaw and beef fat fries. Ok that all sounds so fancy i know but to me in my opinion the fries were just fries nothing special not really sure why the name for the fries, the avocado coleslaw was pretty darn good. Now lets talk about the shrimp and fish, eh was very flavorful i feel like the fish was good but could use some improvement on flavor. Shark attack was the perfect name for the drink i ordered the energy hello sailor brings with the ambiance on how everything is presented is perfect. Stopped by this cute spot with some friends for a weekend trip. We docked the boat and walked around to the front since the back is blocked off so they can better social distant guests. The lobster roll was pretty bad ass and the slaw was pretty good with not as much sweetness as I'm used to. I got the Hamachi crudo because it sounded amazing. The flavors were pretty blissful. You had the crunch of the black rice, pine nuts, and sesame seeds. The acidity balanced out the flavors very well. Definitely an interesting option if you like raw fish. Finally I got the Pei Mussells. These were listed as a snack but of course I got two snacks as my lunch. For a "snack" it's a pretty decent portion and you could even get extra bread for the red sauce. The mussels were pretty good. They were very large with a nice and tangy tomato based sauce. The crostini was perfectly crunchy and buttery. I'm not sure if it's a fixed menu but our friend said they had something else the last time they came. We arrived via boat, so that is definitely one positive of Hello Sailor-the option to arrive for dining either via boat or car. There are only a handful of slips at the dock though, so that is something to consider. We were quoted a 2 hour wait for outside, 90 minutes for inside. We inquired about the wait if we broke up our party, which brought the wait down to an hour. We, however, were sat within 10 minutes at two tables outside. Part of our party ordered drinks and food at the bar, which arrived at the tables shortly after ordering. Service was friendly and, impressively, kept up with the free-flowing mojitos certain members of our party were ordering. My table of 6 ordered the following: *chicken wings- Served with Alabama white sauce (which was delicious), I loved that these were crispy and well-seasoned. *Hushpuppies-served with honey butter and surprisingly light. *Deviled crab dip (pimento cheese and captain's wafers)- Really lacked flavor as well as larger crab chunks. I didn't like the fact it came with prepacked crackers; toasted bread would have been better. Would not recommend ordering this. *baby back pork ribs-served with mustard bbq sauce, very tender and a nice portion. *side order of beef fat fries-Fried crisp, served hot. Decent fries but no indication particularly of "beef fat". *Crispy chicken sandwich-shared by my MIL and her BF. Did not try but they both liked it a lot. The other table in our party also ordered the skillet burger and had the watermelon with al pastor and sea salt and said both were delicious. I thought the prices were high, overall, but some items were reasonably priced. I also feel the need to call out the sick soundtrack at Hello, Sailor! LOVED the 1990s Outkast (ATLiens and Aquemini albums) bumping throughout our meal! This review is mostly based on the takeout experience, as my sister had dined in and brought food home for me. I asked for the spicy chicken sandwich, as I had previously had their original chicken sandwich that used to be on the menu and absolutely loved it. The spicy chicken sandwich was awful. The chicken patty was thicker than it was wide, and probably fit about half of the bun. I'm not sure if the patty was even cooked fully, as one bite in I noticed it was pink inside. After one bite I stopped eating it, not to mention the bottom bun was literally soaked and fell apart when I picked it up. I also asked my sister to get a side of ranch, and when she asked the server, they told her no, they don't do to go sauces. How weird is that? She also mentioned that their ketchup was served in a plastic takeout container, which proves that they CAN do takeout sauces, they just chose not to. I wouldn't be surprised if this was out of cheapness, as their sister restaurant Milkbread charges extra for those tiny sauce cups. So dumb, lol. I was also told that several of the staff were wearing shirts making fun of the fact that they have 3.4 stars on yelp, which is SO bizarre. The owners of this place disgust me, they are making so much money from all of their establishments and couldn't care less about the quality of their food or the customer experience. After being an ex employee at one of their sister restaurants, I can assure you that the owners only care about money and their cult like following (they pay their employees minimum wage and force them to work for tips). Avoid this place if you can, the whole experience is bizarre and there are PLENTY of other cute places on the lake that will actually value your experience as a customer. read more

Wow! I've had Hello Sailor in my bookmarks for quite some time, so when it came time for my family dinner for my birthday, I knew I wanted to go here! Last night (summer Wednesday evening), my family arrived before me (around 7 PM). They were seated outside on the patio. I LOVE what they've done to the inside! So cute & retro ... & they have an old school photo booth! I remember what it looked like inside, when it was Rusty Rudder. LOVE, love, love the inside. The patio is nice & of course the water view is great, too. Colton, our waiter, was fantastic! Super friendly, attentive & on top of things. We did wait a bit long for our food, but there were seven of us, with a mix of seafood entrees & fried chicken sandwiches. Plus, the restaurant was pretty busy ... & not much inside seating. The food was amazing! All lightly fried & the fries were perfection ... & a lot of them! I loved all the sauces, too. A bit pricey, but the portions & taste to me, were worth it. Had hoped for better. My wife with a group of ladies from the Condo came here shortly after they opened and the results were very mixed from the reports. My wife and I went back last night for dinner. This would have been her second visit and my first. Most of the restaurants in the area were packed but we had little trouble getting in here at around 6 pm on a Saturday. Promptly seated a nice table on the upper level overlooking the main dining area. Must say, big improvement from the Rusty Rudder in terms of ambiance. Nice and clean and fresh with effective decor and all overlooking Lake Norman. The outside dining area is going to be a hit come warmer weather. Our server was there shortly and he proved to excellent. Very eclectic menu with a nice variety of different offerings. Looking over the menu, I went back to my younger days and what was a favorite in Ohio and Pennsylvania and that was the fried Baloney Sandwich and Fries. My wife had the Caesar Salad with an upgrade with a lobster tail. The Baloney Sandwich was described as being with a nice thick cut of Chicago Baloney, Sport Pepper, Celery Salt and Mustard. Sounded good till I bit into it. The reason for a garnish or flavoring such as a pepper or whatever is to compliment the main items by complimenting it or adding contrast in either taste of texture. All you could taste her was the pepper that overpowered everything and that was all you could taste. Ended up in the end, taking the sandwich apart and eating the boloney separately. It was a very good, nice and thick slab of Chicago Baloney that by itself, was excellent. The attempt at glamour or showmanship did not do the simple but tasteful baloney justice. My wife's Caesar Salad was good but that was the smallest lobster tail I have ever seen served in a restaurant. I thought states had minimum size limits on the size of Lobsters you could keep. This Lobster Tail was the size of my index finger at best. Taste was good bit due to the small size, not more that a couple of bites at best. Give the restaurant some more months to refine their menu but at the present time, not impressed and that is a shame. The restaurant is right down the cove from where I live and I was looking forward to coming over by boat when the weather warms up. We shall see what happens in the next couple of months as the restaurant evolves. read more

Hello, Sailor was recommended by many friends from Charlotte, so we checked it out. Had a 6pm reservation and they seated us early and right away outside, which we requested on site. Beautiful view, and most diners followed COVID protocol (masks on when walking around, able.to remove at table). The staff complied fully, and our waiter was extremely friendly and pleasant. My wife ordered the Yacht Club - a fantastic cocktail with a smokey flavor. We went with the lobster roll, the fried Carolina flounder and the trout with seafood stew. The lobster roll was quite a bit on the small side for the price of $28, but the flavor was there. Really tasty. I wish it were 3x the size. The trout was cooked amazing and the stew with peas underneath was a delight. The fried Carolina flounder I would say was our least favorite dish - though nicely fried, it has virtually no seasoning. Maybe the tartar sauce or the perfectly seasoned fries that came with it were to help it not be OVER seasoned, but I would hope there was some additional flavoring on the fish itself. My friend Jenn and I went to Hello, Sailor for lunch. Hello, Sailor is the newest restaurant from the folks at Kindred and most people will tell you how life-changing Kindred is as a restaurant. I only like the bread and dessert at Kindred so I really wasn't looking forward to Hello, Sailor. So much so that several of my friends had asked to join me there and I said no. But Jenn and I had a change of plans one day for lunch and we were suddenly left trying to figure out what to have since neither of us had brought lunch as a back up. We were going through the list of normal places to go and nothing sounded great. Jenn then suggested Hello, Sailor and I thought, "well... why not?" Keep in mind Hello, Sailor is is pretty focused around seafood which isn't my favorite. I was pretty convinced that I'd end up with a burger even though I didn't want one. Instead, Jenn convinced me to try the Calabash chicken and she ordered a lobster roll. To start, we went ahead and ordered some hush puppies. Before I get to the food, let's talk about the restaurant. You know in "Mad Men" when Draper heads to California? Yeah, that season threw up and is the decor of Hello, Sailor. I like it. I like that it took me mentally to "Mad Men". But it also has terrible acoustics, which is brought up a lot on the Yelp reviews that currently exist. Also, our waiter was very interested in sharing every single detail with us. Even after I said yes I wanted the dessert. Alas! I had not yet heard every minor detail of the hand pie so even though I'd said yes, he continued explaining it to me. I found that a little odd, but my experience wasn't ruined because of it. Anyway. I don't love hush puppies. But I did love these. I've actually been thinking about them since I was there. They weren't as dense as others I've had and actually had some flavor. Jenn loved her lobster roll. Which I was super stoked about because it's what everyone wants there (except me) and I would have been disappointed if it was bad. I didn't try it, I just trust her judgment. My chicken was amazing. Perfectly fried. The right amount of seasoning. So many damn sesame seeds. But I wasn't upset by the seeds, I just made the same amount of mess as a small child. I also had the hand pie of the day: bourbon pear. I added vanilla ice cream and Jenn had chocolate ice cream sans hand pie. The hand pie was absolutely delicious. The ice cream was fine... just mostly hilarious at the baby spoon you get with it. Jenn asked for a normal spoon instead and naturally that spoon was larger than the ice cream. I still giggle about it. All in all, I'll be back to Hello, Sailor. I finally decided to take a drive up to the Lake and have dinner at Hello Sailor! With COVID still going on, this place is taking all the sanitary precautions in order to run their business so much applause goes out to the FOH and BOH for making it work. The interior of the restaurant is very vibrant and feels very homey with a lot of natural light entering. For dinner, we sat outside to enjoy the view of the Lake. To start, our server was super helpful for our first time there. We started with the Hushpuppies. They're different than your typical southern hushpuppies. They are good by themselves but when you add that butter they put on the side, it changes the game. Gives it a whole new taste! I order the NC flounder and chips. You can tell it came fresh right out of the fryer. The taste was delicious and smelled amazing. The sauce that came with it pairs well with the fish. My only small complaint would be wishing they were fried just a little longer to be just a tad more crispier and have a darker color to it. The next one is the popcorn shrimp basket. I believe the shrimp were fried perfectly and same with the sauce, pairs quite nicely. Dessert was the soft serve ice cream. This was pretty good soft serve, perhaps one of the best I've had in Charlotte, hands down. Rich and creamy and gives a nice portion size for it too. I do recommend ordering this for dessert. Overall this place is great. Not sure why it averages a 3.5/5 stars, but the staff and the food are great! Hoping to drive up there when the weather isn't so hot early in the evening! read more

That's probably the best things about restaurant. Food. Food was just nothing to brag about and the cost I find outrages. We gotten mussels, whole fried flounder and some calabash shrimps. Sauce in mussels was ok, flounder (why?) dip fried with like 1/2 " bread crumbs (why?) and has zero flavor, shrimps lightly fried but didn't taste like anything either. Took a visiting freind to your restaurant, he ordered the chicken sandwich, asked our waitress if she could add a slice of cheese to the sandwich. waitress - "No" freind - "Do you not have cheese?" waitress - Yes, we have cheese." freind - "I can pay extra." waitress - "The chicken sandwich doesn't come with cheese." This went on as she let us know they have sliced cheese but its not for the chicken sandwhich. He could have a cheeseburger but couldn't have extra cheese. We were in the Lake Norman area and wanted a nice lunch by the lake. We opted to sit outside to get the full experience. We started by ordering the Hamachi Crudo and hush puppies for appetizers. They brought out goldfish for my daughter to snack on while we waited. The hush puppies were different than any other kind I've had. They were a bit dry but we thoroughly enjoyed the yuzu honey butter. The Crudo was tasty and nicely presented. For our main courses, we decided to get sandwiches since other options on the menu were a bit pricey. We got the hot chicken sandwich and the crispy soft shell crab banh mi, both with fries for the kids. The hot chicken sandwich was our favorite. It could have been spicier for my liking. The banh mi was interesting, I was looking for a bit more flavor. It took me a couple years to find my groove with the food at Hello, Sailor. From day one, Katy Kindred brought all the feels of retro Palm Springs to the old dive bar that used to inhabit the space. It's vacation in an instant with lovely views of the boats and Lake Norman sunsets! The bar is sophisticated with cocktails to match - my personal favorite is the mezcal forward Yacht Club. I get it (or 2) every time! When it comes to the food, Hello, Sailor has a rotating menu that changes often and I appreciate that a lot! Over the years I've had fantastic staples too: the hamachi crudo, the soft serve ice cream swirl, and the arugula salad with pepitas are some of my go-tos. Tonight, we tried the Porchetta sandwich with beef fat fries and it was delicious. The sub roll was super soft, the porchetta was sliced perfectly thin, and the pickled red onions were a perfect compliment. I also love the ribs entree here - amazing sauce. Service is prompt and although the prices are a little bit high, the view makes it worth it! This is my favorite restaurant on Lake Norman and the vintage photo booth is fun to do while you wait or after you eat! My husband and I went for an appetizer and drink Sunday afternoon to check out the restaurant. Out of the three things we ordered all three were bad. I ordered Prosecco not realizing all they had was Brut. Our server failed to tell me that and once I looked at the menu I saw that was all they offered. My husband ordered aperil spritz and it too was terrible. We ordered what we thought were nachos and it was pretty sad. There were some strange chips and a bowl of milky cream sauce with a bit of sausage in it. It went uneaten. It's a shame because we told our waiter, but he didn't comment or bring over the manager. If I owned the restaurant, I would want to know a few basic things could greatly improve their business. read more

I learned of Hello, Sailor many months ago when Axios highlighted the restaurant. I'm uptown Charlotte, thought I'd visit for Saturday afternoon lunch. Heather served our table and offered great advice. I had the chicken sandwich, a friend the double patty skillet burger. We shared the crab avocado salad. Everything was delicious. The salad was a pleasant surprise- a delightful medley of greens and toppings. Our sandwiches were satisfying. Heather kept the water and coffee flowing. I have been to this place twice and I gotta say I didn't write a review the first time since I wanted to give it a second chance, and boy am I thankful I did that. If you've heard about this place it's a beautiful restaurant in the lake norman area with a beautiful view to the lake. The place is beautiful! Personally, I love the decoration and in my perspective I felt I was in a house from the series 90210. If you've watched that show back in the days then you know what I'm talking about. Old school with a touch of modern. The first time we went it was super crowed since it was summer time and this is a restaurant you want to go when summer time comes around! If you own a boat you can dock it outside and make your way up to the restaurant, so lots of people take advantage of that with nice summer weather! One of the good things is that they print their menu everyday and have different menu items. You will have certain ones that will repeat, but definitely they have different dishes every day! When we visitantes the first time we didn't get seated until like 8:30-9pm since we walked in with no reservation. By that time they had ran out of plenty of their dishes. On the positive note you can see that their products are fresh for that day and they haven't been siting around for weeks or frozen. We visited Hello Sailor again this past weekend and it was fantastic. We were able to get everything we wanted since it wasn't crowded. We started our meal with the hush puppies. They were fresh and delicious, and cooked to perfection. We then order the flounder, king crab cooked with ghee and salt, and then the lobster roll on milk bread. The meal was fantastic. I have to say the lobster roll was my favorite. It's a Maine style lobster roll so it's cold, but so worth it. I normally like the hot style lobster roll but this one is really good and it's cold. We then had the hand pulled apple pie. Our waiter was Jeremy and he was great! Honestly he went above and beyond to make sure we were good! Had an amazing dinner at Hello, Sailor! It was the perfect getaway evening when you can't really get away. They only had a few reservations left when we made them so had dinner at 5pm. When we arrived it was about to storm but we were able to sit on the covered deck which was nice and cool. Once the storm was over they opened everything up. Beautiful view of the lake! I did love the ambiance inside- 1970s Palm Springs. Our server Victoria was awesome! So friendly and made awesome recommendations on the menu: she was on top of everything the entire meal. I started with an aperol spritz and my boyfriend really liked the Negroni slushee. We also ordered the blue crab claws and hush puppies. The sauce for the crab was to die for, and we ended up ordering a second order of hush puppies. We also shared the wedge salad- which was a huge portion. For dinner I had the spicy chicken sandwich and it was so messy but so good! The fries were good too. My boyfriend had the Italian beef sandwich, which was good but the spicy chicken was better. Unfortunately they were out of doughnuts for dessert. We tried the peach and ginger hand pie- which I loved because it was more salty than sweet. Went perfect with the soft serve.
