My son moved to Saratoga from NYC, where we have some excellent German restaurants. He found this place in Queensbury and we had our annual Oktoberfest dinner there (since I was actually in Munich in late Sept for Oktoberfest and couldn't host him at our place). This restaurant was great. Small and unassuming (not a lot of seats so def make a reservation) but the beer was fresh so they must keep their taps clean, and meine Schweinhaxe was excellent. I appreciate this place for what it is. Friendly staff, good service, and cozy interior. I like the traditional beer selection. It's nice to have an option to sit outside when the weather is nice though the "beer garden" is underwhelming. Nothing screams traditional Bavaria like the suburban strip hell that is Quaker Road. Nien!!!! I've never felt more enraged by a place than Heidelberg Inn. I had high hopes for sure. In a driving rain I only had time for a soup and a beer after a loooong day of driving. I was met by a warm looking environment with many open tables (no rush at all) and the Frau said "no walk ins tonight. We are short handed." I said I was only needing a bowl of soup and I'd be gone. I could sit at the EMPTY bar. No. They persisted. I was so disheartened. I had hopes of an inviting, warm spot but was turned away out of hand. I've been in service industry a long time and never would have pulled that. What's the German word for "shame on you"? UPDATE PER OWNERS DEFENSIVE COMENT: A clever but ham-fisted attempt at deflection. Though you should have just apologized. I made no such scene nor was I rude. You must be embellishing the story to hide the truth that you and your staff made a bad call. I was indeed shocked and when they persisted I said incredulously "I only came in for a soup and you are turning me away into a downpour?" As I was walking out one waitress relented but it was too late for that. A "scene?" Not at all. If your few patrons looked at me in shock as I departed, it was more in pity and alarm at such callousness, but I guess your staff were just "following your orders?" You are right. I didn't understand. I was in restaurant biz for over 15 years and certainly understand "understaffing" but I saw a quiet half-filled restaurant and one person (me) asking for a bowl of soup. Initially, i was struck by the small size of the dining room, which probably seats 25 at best. So i recommend making reservations.We went there as a party of four, with three of us opting for the sauerbraten. I had the jaegerschnitzel. The sauerbraten was very good, and nicely portioned, resulting in take home boxes for each person who had it. My jaegerschnitzel, however, was not all that great. Having had that dish at a number of other places, I was disappointed as it in no way compared to my other experiences. I'm a local and had never been here. I was really looking forward to trying this place out. Showed up around 4:30 just before the dinner rush with my kids. I wasn't aware that they only took reservations, no exceptions. The place was pretty dead, maybe two tables inside and two people on the back patio. I tried to get in but the host told me they already had as many reservations as they wanted. I wanted to rate this place high, but didn't get to try anything and was kind of put off by the policy of no walk ins. EDIT PER THE OWNERS REMARKS: The point of my low review was that the restaurant wasn't busy, there were plenty of tables and staff that didn't seem occupied. We would have settled for a pretzel and a soda outside and been a minimal inconvenience to your staff, we were just looking for something fun and different to do on a nice afternoon. If your immediate reaction is to attack people that leave reviews (as seen in other reviews as well), rather than take feedback and just consider how to better your establishment based on genuine customer experiences, then I wish you the best of luck, but you really seem to be alienating yourself from your customer base. read more

The Heidelberg in is a hidden gem. It is a throwback to all the German restaurants that littered every town, that have since gone by the wayside. Although small and reservations are recommended, I didn't see anyone turned away for not having a reservation. The staff have their system down to manage customers and turn tables over while allowing customers to take their time dining. If the tables are full, the fine bar is also a great alternative. Although, small, it does not feel tight and it is a warm and welcoming venue on a cold winter day (we went the first Sat of Feb). The beer selection of on draft german beers has a little something for everyone. i would suggest the dark Runkel and the Lager beer. As enticing as a liter is- take the half liter beer and have both. As for the food, wow. Not an overly complicated menu, but the selection of various veal, beef, pork, fish and chicken, along with four different types of german sausage and multiple sides are german cuisine delights. The German mac n cheese (with a knockwurst) and the Bratwurst sampler with red cabbage and german potato salad was enough for 4 people to share. Try the celery vinaigrette on your salad. For main course- we all had something different and I sampled everyone's. I had the wiener schnitzel with a potato pancake and an extra side of spatzle. My wife had the saurbraten with the potato pancake. The kids had the breaded fish and the other had the special of the night- the chicken cordon blu. Desert consisted of a incredible lemon cake, a chocolate upside down cake and apple strudel. EVERYTHING was perfectly prepared and tasted amazing. I went with the bockwurst, bauernwurst, and leberkase. The first two were deliciously juicy and really well flavored. The leberkase, which I've never had before, was more of a blend of meats in a loaf shape that was lightly browned (still great!). I had the slightly sweet red cabbage and the fried spaetzle, which is one of my favorite dishes of all time. While the dining room was busy, our server was super sweet and very attentive. The bf and I stopped here on a whim on our way to Lake George from Hudson Falls. I'm notorious for being indecisive with my food choices, so he suggested just doing a round of light apps and drinks. I chose this place because I really liked that it wasn't the typical choices of onion rings, mozz sticks, wings, etc., all being fried and greasy. We opted to sit outside under the tent, and being a mid-week afternoon, we had the area to ourselves. Our waitress, Sherry (sorry if I butchered the spelling!), was so wonderful. We told her we'd never been there before since were out-of-towners, and she gave us some awesome recommendations for both food and drink choices. Ultimately we ordered and split the German Sampler and chose the brat, knock, and bauern. German potato salad was DELICIOUS, red cabbage was simple but flavorful. The mac and cheese spaetzle was decent, but not mind-blowing; next time I'd probably try the regular pan-fried side to assess the true flavor. We also got the potato cake with the beer/cheese dipping sauce and that was a pretty tasty option.
