2-L boots of Hofbrau Oktoberfest and Hofbrau Dunkel
Ed G.

My son moved to Saratoga from NYC, where we have some excellent German restaurants. He found this place in Queensbury and we had our annual Oktoberfest dinner there (since I was actually in Munich in late Sept for Oktoberfest and couldn't host him at our place). This restaurant was great. Small and unassuming (not a lot of seats so def make a reservation) but the beer was fresh so they must keep their taps clean, and meine Schweinhaxe was excellent. Fell off the bone, juicy, with just enough fat and crispiness. Pan seared spaetzle was excellent. I will definitely go back, even though I live in the Bronx.

Hubbie and I ordered veal and pork schnitzel combo plates. Pounded super thin and cooked perfectly. I had the sauerkraut on the waitresseses recommendation and it was tasty. Caraway seeds but not too much. We'll be back.

Who can say more the best little hidden gem of a restaurant on Quaker Road? As this staff and owner continuously serves quality ingredients, beautifully assembled, and prepared, with the utmost care and passion of service. Also, speaking of service The front of house team are nothing but spectacular on all levels not missing a beat. So when you have a winning combination like this a great place, great food, and great people, you can't go anywhere else to loose yourself for an afternoon and enjoy the greatest meal. Always time well spent and worth a lazy drive all the way from Niskayuna on a beautiful autumn day. Additionally the owner coming over to our table was simply a delight, and we were ordering them offered to him to make the choice for our German Sampler Platter offerings, he chose amazingly. We can't express our gratitude for this wonderful restaurant.

Potato salad with pork schnitzel. Spatzell and pork schnitzel.

Worst food ever. Walking in with the smell of bad oil in the parking lot should have been a hint. Spatzell was over cooked and hard. The pork schnitzel was also over cooked and inedible. We both left after a few bites and I always finish my meal. Save your time and money, eat s

As always the espresso martini was great. The rouladen was exceptional with a bowl of lobster bisque soup for starters. Our server was very attentive. Great time at the Heidelberg.

Kelly was our server and she was awesome. She is so professional and knowledgeable and friendly. Today was the 2nd anniversary and we received some very nice appetizers to celebrate this great event. We ordered Duck, Sauerbraten, Wiener Schnitzel, Chicken Cordon Bleu and Bratwurst, Knockwurst, and Weiwurst. Some of us ordered the asparagus soup to start( Spargel). It was so creamy and delicious. The food came promptly and cooked to order. You will definitely need a to go box as you will be served a generous portion. We finished up with an Apple strudel for all to taste. It was just delicious. It was an incredible dinner in a nice atmosphere. This is a very nice restaurant and the prices are fair for the food you are served. We will be returning to enjoy the fine German cuisine.

The Arctic air had ideas about permanence. The car's thermometer read -14, and it didn't know the wind was gusting at 30 mph. My family and I scurried off Route 9 and into Spargel on 9, seeking sausages, gravies, and the hearty warmth of central European food. We had a six o' clock reservation. We arrived ten minutes early, cheeks stinging, only to find the dining room looking pleasantly underpopulated. I would guess a quarter full, perhaps one third if I was feeling generous. Reservations, in this case, felt like bringing a life raft into a swimming pool. Still, it's nice to feel expected. The host asked if we would mind sitting in a booth in the bar area. This struck me as odd given the abundance of empty tables in the main dining room, but mystery is good for the appetite. We agreed and settled in among the taps and glassware. Warm pretzel bread appeared with honey butter that tasted as if bees had briefly considered culinary school. We ordered Backers mit Apfel Sauce, potato pancakes with apple sauce, and they arrived promptly. Crisp at the edges, soft in the middle, devoured with the focus of people who had just crossed a tundra parking lot. The table went silent save for appreciative chewing. My wife chose the Rindfleisch Gulash. It arrived in a state of deep, fragrant seriousness. The beef fell apart at the slightest suggestion from a fork. It was rich, warming, and the sort of thing that makes winter feel much less like a personal attack. She allowed me several bites, which I accepted with the gratefullness of a man being handed state secrets. I ordered the Kassler Rucken Vom Grill, featuring smoked pork loin from Oscar's Smokehouse, a local legend. The cut was thick and beautifully smoked. My wife and oldest son both sampled it and approved. Yet in the quiet corner of my mind I could not escape the notion that I was enjoying a very accomplished ham steak. This is not an insult. It was expertly prepared. I simply suspect that on my next visit I will wander elsewhere on the menu. My oldest son selected the Erlanger Sauerbraten and took to it with enthusiasm. He managed about half, which for a growing fourteen year old is an achievement bordering on mythical. The rest went back to the hotel in a box, where I am told it continued to perform admirably. My youngest ordered the kid's bratwurst with french fries. This was the one faint cloud in an otherwise sturdy sky. The sausage was on the small side and the fries were serviceable but uninspired. After finishing, he remained hungry, which is notable because he is not typically an ambitious eater. At this price point, a more generous bratwurst would have felt right. Service was the chief reason I cannot quite award five stars. It was exceedingly slow. Not inattentive, and certainly not careless, simply stretched thin. Our server and bartender, Beau, moved with the intensity of a man attempting to occupy three dimensions at once. He mixed drinks, took orders, ran food, delivered checks, and did it all with good humor and great skill. The delay was clearly a matter of staffing, not effort or ability. In the end, we left warm, well fed, and maybe slightly perfumed with smoke and gravy. The food was very good, and in some cases excellent. The room felt welcoming, even if curiously arranged. We will return the next time we find ourselves braving a Queensbury winter evening. Four stars, gladly given, with hopes that the next visit includes an extra pair of hands behind the bar or in the dining room, and perhaps one more bratwurst for the smallest member of the family.

This is probably the hardest review I've done, and I've taken some time to think about it before…read moredoing so. We came here for my husband's birthday dinner, as we were in the area for a getaway. We were both stationed in Germany back in the day, and he has a particular adoration for German food. And that German food MUST COME WITH SPAETZLE, which is the German version of noodles. Of course he also needs the breaded cutlet, but it all goes together for him: cutlet, gravy, spaetzle. As a vegetarian, German food is often harder for me, and so I really only had one entree choice: the potato pancake, although I believe that wasn't the official name for it. My husband's entree didn't come with spaetzle, but there was a kids meal with it and perhaps it came with other entrees, I can't remember, but we assumed he could switch his side to spaetzle and everyone would go home happy. Au contraire. We went for the appetizer, entree, desert pricing since everything was on the more expensive side and this way we'd just choose from each selection without thinking about the cost. The first problem occurred when we asked if the German pretzel, our favorite share starter, could take the place of one of our appetizers. After all it was the same price or cheaper, AND it's a gd appetizer, after all. Isn't it? No. We were not allowed to do that. So we skipped the pretzel, trying to keep our birthday cheer afloat. Tis but a fleshwound, right? Next he was told he could not substitute spaetzle for the side that came with his entree. Why not? We got a shrug. Then we asked if he could just buy a side of it. We were told it wasn't on the side list so no, he couldn't get a side of it. Imagine! You are told at a German restaurant you can't even BUY THE GERMAN FOOD YOU WANT AS A SIDE. Even though they have it there. At this point we were irritated. But it's his birthday dinner. So we just ordered from the menu and attempted to move on and enjoy the experience. Then the food comes out. It's absolutely delicious! The asparagus appetizer I'd selected was incredible, and my potato entree superb. Hub's portion of cutlet was generous, and he said his whole meal was on point. (With the exception of the missing spaetzle, of course.) We both had the apple streudel for desert, and the flavor was there, but it was super cold, unlike many we've gotten warm and delicious. We weren't a fan of it cold. The atmosphere was nice, and the waitress did a decent job of filling our orders, but seemed to have no empathy for our needs or desires. This all left me torn as to what rating to give the restaurant. The food we got was mostly amazing, except for the temperature of the dessert. I'd give it five stars in a heartbeat. The inflexibility to make the most basic efforts to keep your guests happy: allowing the pretzel to be included in the appetizer choices, and allowing a guest to swap a side for spaetzle or even allowing them to buy it as an extra side seemed to the point of insanity. Isn't the point of having a restaurant to serve people good food in a nice atmosphere so everyone is happy? Someone there has lost the plot. I'd give them a zero if I could for ruining my husband's birthday dinner with this ridiculous behavior. So I settled for a three. This three neither addresses the excellence of the food we ate or the basic failure to keep their guests happy. I hope they stay in business but learn to be flexible. It's not becoming.

Bottom line..when you call yourself a German restaurant and you misspell Merry Christmas as "Frohe Weihnacten" you know you're in for disappointment. That should have been a red flag. Overpriced slop.

The cheese fondue was substantial, served with bread, apples, cornichons, cocktail onions, chunks of ham, two different kinds of sausages and assorted potatoes, all gorgeously presented on wooden slab. The French onion soup, which we shared as an appetizer was also delicious. Great wine and my fiancé sampled the Vermonter cocktail, a potent concoction of bourbon, sweet vermouth and angostura bitters. Very strong and flavorful! We finished the evening with a slice of apple strudel, complete with a sparkler candle for my belated birthday. Great presentation! The decor and atmosphere here is stunning with fur throws over the seat backs, roses, candlelight and Alpine themes like antler wall sconces. Bathrooms were very clean and decorated with cute retro skiing photos. After we praised the fondue as exceptional, our server offered to bring out the owner so we could meet her. Our whole experience here was very strong until the end of our meal when then service slowed down, which the server explained was due to a large party upstairs, so it took awhile for us to get our dessert. Not a huge deal. While the owner was great to chat with, she then asked if we wanted to enjoy our dessert at the bar so they could seat a larger party using our table and the one next to us (awkward, especially after spending over $200 on dinner, no thanks). Also, we did not appreciate the 2.5 "operational fee" added to our check! Were it not for these last two points, this would have been a five star review because the atmosphere, food and drinks were great!
