This is probably the hardest review I've done, and I've taken some time to think about it before doing so. We came here for my husband's birthday dinner, as we were in the area for a getaway. We were both stationed in Germany back in the day, and he has a particular adoration for German food. And that German food MUST COME WITH SPAETZLE, which is the German version of noodles. Of course he also needs the breaded cutlet, but it all goes together for him: cutlet, gravy, spaetzle. As a vegetarian, German food is often harder for me, and so I really only had one entree choice: the potato pancake, although I believe that wasn't the official name for it. My husband's entree didn't come with spaetzle, but there was a kids meal with it and perhaps it came with other entrees, I can't remember, but we assumed he could switch his side to spaetzle and everyone would go home happy. Au contraire. We went for the appetizer, entree, desert pricing since everything was on the more expensive side and this way we'd just choose from each selection without thinking about the cost. The first problem occurred when we asked if the German pretzel, our favorite share starter, could take the place of one of our appetizers. After all it was the same price or cheaper, AND it's a gd appetizer, after all. Isn't it? No. We were not allowed to do that. So we skipped the pretzel, trying to keep our birthday cheer afloat. Tis but a fleshwound, right? Next he was told he could not substitute spaetzle for the side that came with his entree. Why not? We got a shrug. Then we asked if he could just buy a side of it. We were told it wasn't on the side list so no, he couldn't get a side of it. Imagine! You are told at a German restaurant you can't even BUY THE GERMAN FOOD YOU WANT AS A SIDE. Even though they have it there. At this point we were irritated. But it's his birthday dinner. So we just ordered from the menu and attempted to move on and enjoy the experience. Then the food comes out. It's absolutely delicious! The asparagus appetizer I'd selected was incredible, and my potato entree superb. Hub's portion of cutlet was generous, and he said his whole meal was on point. (With the exception of the missing spaetzle, of course.) We both had the apple streudel for desert, and the flavor was there, but it was super cold, unlike many we've gotten warm and delicious. We weren't a fan of it cold. The atmosphere was nice, and the waitress did a decent job of filling our orders, but seemed to have no empathy for our needs or desires. This all left me torn as to what rating to give the restaurant. The food we got was mostly amazing, except for the temperature of the dessert. I'd give it five stars in a heartbeat. The inflexibility to make the most basic efforts to keep your guests happy: allowing the pretzel to be included in the appetizer choices, and allowing a guest to swap a side for spaetzle or even allowing them to buy it as an extra side seemed to the point of insanity. Isn't the point of having a restaurant to serve people good food in a nice atmosphere so everyone is happy? Someone there has lost the plot. I'd give them a zero if I could for ruining my husband's birthday dinner with this ridiculous behavior. So I settled for a three. This three neither addresses the excellence of the food we ate or the basic failure to keep their guests happy. I hope they stay in business but learn to be flexible. It's not becoming. read more

If you can't cook a steak properly to order, it's a problem. When your server doesn't insist on making it right, it's unforgivable. My fiance and I spent his entire birthday dinner marveling that nothing was done about a medium rare steak that came out medium/medium well (butcher issue to be fair... one end was worse). When I pointed out the steak was overdone, the server said... "It is?"... and looked at me as if I were wrong; that was the worst part. I've never been uncomfortable being honest about my steak when done incorrectly before, but here we are. So I didn't feel I could ask for a new one without lots of grumbles from staff. I was no longer hungry for anything else as offered, but would've loved the chef to insist on preparing a new one with a warm red center instead of pink. Not even one of our two (nonalcoholic) drinks was comped. At least our dog got lucky since I couldn't eat it. We just can't go back, and that's too bad, because everything else was fine. read more

The food was horrible. Had the goulash that was over-salted soup. Wife had sauerbraten which was inedible. Son-in-law was charged $20 for a glass of house Cabernet. Bottom line..when you call yourself a German restaurant and you misspell Merry Christmas as "Frohe Weihnacten" you know you're in for disappointment. That should have been a red flag. I brought a friend to BRONWYN tonight to give him a night away from his temporary residency at a convalescent home, where he is recovering from some health issues. He has the Sauerbraten and I selected the Haxe. Both were Amazing, but But Not As Amazing as KELLY, who Expertly attended to our every need and pampered us, like family. And the hot coffee, each person has their cup prepared at the table, with each cup made in its' individual small French Press! I Just Wish, they Offered Apple Strudel, as a dessert option, on the menu. That is a Classic! read more

It is a shame. We have tried to support Bronwyn a handful of times, trying different seatings etc. the ambiance and outdoor seating is great, beer is good, but our last experience was our last. The way the sausage dish was presented looked like a huge boiled donkey appendage, my husbands burger bun was saturated with blood. I asked the waitress for some horseradish and horseradish mustard was bitter/off tasting and when i brought it to her attention she said " perhaps you have never had horseradish mustard before!" Food was a bit overcooked especially sauerbraten but taste was ok. Service was very poor. Charged for refills on iced tea that was already overpriced without mentioning that there would be a charge. Food was a bit bland I would say. Loaded Bratkartoffeln, say that 10 times fast! Basically breakfast potatoes with some chili and cheese. It's a no for me. Next was Sauerbraten, eh. Again a bit boring. Something with red cabbage in it should have some zing!! Meat was ok, maybe a tad dry. Again with a bunch of breakfast potatoes, same as in the chili. Maybe the warm potato salad, which I would not have gotten if I knew about all the other potatoes! Still kind of tasteless. The establishment itself is quite nice! I could snuggle up to the bar for awhile if not for having to drive. Service was great. My kind of young lady. Can take and give a little sarcasm! This is a fun German place just north of Arlington on route 7A, and we happened to visit right as Oktoberfest was starting. They had all the requisite decor and the wait staff decked out in full attire, plus a good selection of beers and German food. I'm thinking they should embrace this and just do it all year long. Why not? The pretzel, which might make you blush, is gigantic and worth the $15. Seriously, it can feed the whole table. Impressive stuff here. read more

so german restaurants have gotten sort of scarce so we thought we would give this a try...darkish germanesk inside with an interesting bar area and lots of outside seating and a place for a group for their nights of music, we ate outside and were pleasantly surprised by the menu...we started with the gigantic pretzel which was great and then tried the 45$ 3 course specials, we figured meals would be tapa sized but WRONG.....the appetizer a salad and a thing i forget the name of were both gereously sized...dinner was salmon and sauerbraten, again very good and generous, for dessert a chocolate mousse and a sundae...great...drinks were interesting and very good, service efficient and pleasant...we did eat out side so of course it did rain and we were not in the tent covered area, so were were assisted moving inside to finish up our meals (well desserts ) as the weather prevailed....very good, very interesting!!! read more

This is a new restaurant in Arlington, Vt. Previously Chauncey's. The place was newly renovated european/german theme. We made reservation. We were seated right away. Our server was pleasant though she did not introduce herself. Drinks and Food arrived promptly. I like my drink. mint infused whiskey etc. Hubby had an IPA. My schnitzel was really good. Hubby liked his wurst trio. He said the venison sausage was pretty delicious. Did not particularly like the music selection. I favor motown. This is our first time here. Came with two kids after a day skiing, and they had a great time. The kids menu was a hit with them, but they would have eaten more had they not devoured their entire giant pretzel they were supposed to share with me. Instead I got to have the sauerbraten which was tasty & tender - not to mention a very healthy portion. Potato pancake was a great starter too. Look forward to trying out more options next time we are up here. Nice to have a full selection of German beers too. It feels like this restaurant is about to go out of business. They had run out of the pretzel by 5:30pm on a Sunday. There was one waitress for the entire restaurant, so service was understandably very slow. We saw her once after sitting for 30 mins and placed our drink and food orders. Never checked in. No opportunity for additional drinks. We had to go inside to the bar to get our bill after sitting with empty drinks and plates for almost 40 mins. We live in Boston, but are in southern Vermont quite often and have dined at most of the finer establishments in the area. Brownwyn is a very welcome addition to the cadre of good places to eat- it is really quite special. Brownwyn makes standard German fare, and takes authenticity seriously. The mains that we have had so far (We have been twice) were all delicious- the pork schnitzel was crisp AND juicy; the sauerbraten was falling off the bone, the huge pork entree "Kingstellen" (for two people) was so tender and perfectly cooked. All of the servers we had were friendly and well informed, and gave excellent table service. We have yet to try all the sausages and meats offered, but the Haus sausages are excellent. But, I can't finish without praising the ALL OF THE EXCELLENT SIDE DISHES!! The cabbage sides were perfection- Rotkohl and sauerkraut, the German potato salad is perfectly seasoned, served warm with big chunks of thick bacon. Just like my grandma used to make! First, I have to state, I am not a big fan of German cuisine. Thus, I will probably not go back to Bronwyn's any time soon. However, this is an epic restaurant in Arlington as it is the only real dining establishment offering a very diverse menu, multiple beer offerings and well prepared culturally authentic foods that does not include pizza. My daughter loves this restaurant and I find absolutely no fault with the food preparation, the service, or the venue. Portion sizes are more than adequate, prices are fair and reasonable, lots of off street parking, a great beer selection in large frosty mugs make this place a must try for visitors to Arlington. While I will not see you there, I highly recommend giving the restaurant a try and drawing your own conclusions. You will not leave hungry and if you are like my daughter, this can be your number 1 restaurant in the area. read more

I lived in Berlin for a bit, so I was excited when a German restaurant was opening so near my home. Place was pretty good, seated promptly, wait staff was very nice, food came out strangely quickly. The portions are quite large so be prepared for that, we had enough for another meal the next day (we were 2 people splitting one appetizer and one main, but we were used to European sized portions). Quite satisfying, and I weirdly liked the venison wurst the most. Also: to the one bad review this place has: you shouldn't give a restaurant a bad review despite the food and service being good because you didn't like the way the table next to you dressed. This German restaurant has only been open for less than two months but they have it down. The portions are HUGE and delicious. I started with the potato parsnip soup. My husband had the German potato salad. Both tops. The pork shoulder was served with pop-them-in-your mouth roasted potatoes. I had the sauerbraten. It was served over yummy mashed potatoes. We topped off the meal sharing a Bavarian Cream. Highly recommend here. read more

As we are still missing the authenic German of the Spa Brahaus, we were excited to find a new German restaurant within an hour of Saratoga. Sadly, we are still searching.... While the menu was limited, I was content at being able to order my favorite German meal ever... Sauerbraten. Bronwyn's version, sadly was just roast beef with a fair amount of fat attached. I had to request gravy, and it was more of a vinegar marinade, then actually gravy. I paid extra to get a side of Spaetzle as only their version of "rotkohl" was included with the entree (cabbage with chunks of meat?). I have had Spaetzle at MANY German restaurants... I even make my own... I've never had it with cheddar and shallots, until tonight. The salad had actual potato chips on it. $200 later (no alcohol) we left disappointed and hungry. read more

Fun place. I lived in Germany for 3 years and know the real deal when I come across it. Some of the dishes were done really well, pork shank was excellent, schnitzel could do without the mushroom gravy (that's Yeager schnitzel by the way). We were so excited to be coming to the new restaurant in Arlington. We arrived at 5:30 and were seated promptly. The decor is adorable and almost German looking. The German beer on draft was quite blasé. But maybe I'm a snob, having had really good German beer in Germany. Our waitress, all the waitresses, were very friendly and accommodating. What ruined our experience there was a table of really loud people, most with baseball caps on. I think that says enough for them. Otherwise everything would've been perfect. Sadly, a restaurant can't turn people away because of who they are. My advice for you, if you don't like children and baseball caps, go after 7 o'clock at night. read more
