We were on the main highway headed north and my wife found the central market. A quick search on yelp and here we are! I had to wait a few minutes for them to open, but they still opened before they're posted time! The folks inside were very patient while I looked at the menu and you can tell they take a lot of pride in their work! My sandwich was the best! I had it left way with all the fixings. I sat down for a few minutes while I waited for my warm sandwich to finish and took it to go. Very clean and orderly inside the restaurant!

    Workers building hundreds of hoagies.

Made the pilgrimage back down to Hefty Lefty's Hoagies and Grinders. Lessons learned last time: - Order ahead. - Add SPO and hot pepper relish. - Upgrade to seeded roll on the cheesesteak. Unfortunately - ordered 24 hours in advance ... still waited 30 min. They didn't add the SPO or hot pepper relish to my hoagie. My friends order was made 24 hours in advance as well- an hour later they realized they didn't have it. Steak was meh and also needed seasoning. Many of the sandwich builders didn't look like they were as invested in the hoagies as the room full of customers were ... sorta moving in slow motion (we had some time to observer while we waited). We sat outside the shop and enjoyed the hustle and bustle of the market. That said - still a solid hoagie (only ate half) and the fries are on point.

Had a turkey and provolone (Hefty) 9 inch. The sub is packed with meat could be shared between 2. The taste was amazing the roll is sesame seeded but a mild sesame flavor. I prefer a softer roll but that's just me. It is located in the Central Market so parking can be challenging.

This rating may be biased as we ordered to go and I am sure if we ate it there it would be a higher rating. The selection of subs you can choose from is great! There is something for everyone and I love that they wrap the meat around so that it holds it all together. The size of the subs are also ginormous! We placed an order online so while we had to wait about 10-15 minutes after our designated pick up time, it wasn't too bad as they were slammed with the line looped outside their door. Watching them make the subs was fun, the guy in the beginning even weighed out each portion of meat before getting the sub made. They moved through pretty quickly, I would say even at their busiest time, they got the line moving with noone waiting more than 15-20 minutes. The vibe of the place is funny too as I think it's suppose to replicate a garage and not to mention the punny name!! It's definitely a place worth checking out but I would highly recommend eating then and there!!!

Had the pleasure of visiting Central Market in York yesterday and decided to see what the hype was with Hefty Lefty .... I tried the Flying Pig Hoagie, Hefty 9". It was a very nice size, packed with meat and uniquely rolled with the lettuce, tomato and onion inside the rolled meat and cheese. The Hoagie was good, the pricing was good for what you received and extremely fresh The line got extremely long after we ordered, they make some nice looking hoagies .... Staff was friendly and efficient and they have some tables you can sit and enjoy your food. I do recommend giving g them a try, our next visit will be trying their Cheesesteaks !!

Absolutely incredible!! That's all I can say... literally the BEST hoagie & grinder we've EVER eaten. Honestly. We've eaten a lot of hoagies all over the USA & our minds are blown. We got the Balboa Hefty & the All American Hefty & the Balboa grinder. Mind. Blown.

Philly special Lefty way with mayo and pickles. This is a husky.

I have never seen a hoagie this big! Lots of meat, you definitely get your money's worth! I ordered the husky which I believe is 6 inches. You better be hungry if you order The Hefty! We had a big eater with us and he was hurting after the Hefty !The fries are also excellent!! Ambiance is loud and casual. Very little seating. Service is friendly and fast. They were super busy but we got our food within 15 minutes. I recommend!

Red Lion location 3/9 5:00 Picked up my order where I specified veggies on the side. The guy told me he's "not allowed" to put the veggies on the side because "it won't be a hefty lefty" I don't know what kind of BS this is but we've been to York market more times than I can count and FSS one time before and never had this problem. Last time I checked I was the customer

TLDR: One of the best hoagies I have had to date. The bread is fantastic and the meat wrapped around the toppings makes for a better eating experience. Come for any of the cold cuts. Vibe: 5/5. Located in the far corner of the York Central Market, Hefty Lefty's is a humble, no frills sandwich shack that at peak hours can be seen having lines queued up around the market. Though mostly a takeout business, the restaurant does have a few tables inside as well as outside the entrance for those that can't wait to dive into their meat mountain. They have an efficient ordering system, with a single line going in on the left for those placing their order and an area on the right for those waiting for pickup. Orders can be placed online through their own website if you wish to beat the line (highly recommended). Service: 5/5. The entire staff at Hefty's was great! I had placed my order online the night before for a 10:15am pickup time. Considering that the restaurant doesn't open until 10am, my sandwich was ready right on time, if not a little earlier. Since it was so early, I didn't have to wait in line and waltzed right in and picked up my subs. You can really tell the staff takes pride in their product, as each sub was perfectly taped, wrapped in paper and nestled in the paper to go bag so they wouldn't shift around. Sometimes it's the little things like this that make even a takeout experience memorable. Food: 5/5. Easily a top 5 hoagie and most certainly a destination sub, i.e. one worth traveling for. I ordered a 6" Philly special (their rendition of your classic Italian but with sharp provolone) and a 6" roast beef hoagie. Both subs came loaded with meat, but in the most unique way of presenting it. Hefty's cleverly puts all their toppings inside the center of the sub and rolls the deli meats around them, forming a meat log. This delivery system is ingenious, as it allows you to get proportionate bites of meat, cheese and toppings. Another benefit is that the meat can act as a sog barrier for the bread. This was especially true for the Philly special, as the salty cured meats did not leave any soggy spots on the roll during my 90 minute ride home. Unfortunately, the roast beef did suffer from some moisture transfer from the beef to the roll, but all in all it was still very good. Pricing is insanely reasonable. Each massive 6" hovered around $10-12, which was well worth the price of admission. Overall, if you ever find yourself near York county, I highly suggest making your way over to York Central Market to get yourself a Hefty Lefty or 2!

They also use the Philly bread that tastes so good because of the putrid water there , but seriously, the bread is good. The problem(s) arose when we opened our bag and wrapping...remember that good meat I spoke of? Well, there wasn't much of it on there. In fact, it was mostly Wiz (and that was even skimpy) and no onions or peppers. When I called to place the order, I was redirected to order online; very impersonal. Perhaps the reasoning is because people call in and never pick up their food, so it becomes a cost issue, which I do understand. The guy could have been friendlier on the phone, but perhaps he's an introvert ‍. When we looked at our food, we were so disappointed . And then, I looked up and saw the disgusting tub in the window lurking at me with all of its drippings down the side. That was a complete and total eyesore and will stop us from ever returning.

Price wise not horrible and flavor wise big plus. Would suggest this place for a simple but delicious meal.

I'm so glad that I listened to my reasoning and didn't listen to the other reviews. Let's get this straight, if you are looking for "INSTA-FAMOUS" location and food presentation, this is NOT your place. The decor is actually something that made me giggle a little bit. 1980's style moulded booths (not fluffy friendly) about 6 on each side of the restaurant. A couple of plastic tables in the middle of the restaurant for large groups or "fluffy people" like myself. Dark red paint on the wall with only 1 piece of artwork, a sign that reads "We have no wifi, pretend it is 1995 and talk to people". (this endeared me most). A wood paneled counter for ordering. A lit up menu above the counter. A make shift utensil and seasonings table. An old trash can. and on this particular day 100's of boxes being made around us (impressively so). The picture I am painting is a 1980's pizza joint. And it really is exactly that, with perhaps the exception of instead of Ms. PacMan at the front, they have 4 gambling machines. To this Gen Xer, I found this refreshing and a true blast from the past. Another relic from the past is their staff. They still hire teenagers. This is both a great thing (teenagers need to work!) and a bad thing as the girls were LOUD and not particularly good at customer service. The adult supervising them was possibly reliving his youth in his ability to play with them. (it wasn't creepy, but, it was kind of sad), instead of managing them and showing them how to provide customer service. But, no one was nasty. Everyone was having a good time. And they got the job done. I ordered an italian boli and I asked for them to add mushrooms to it. They looked at me funny, but, eventually let me get them. My husband ordered an italian cold cut sub, we both ordered 2 large fountain sodas (as per 1980s decor, they came in styrofoam cups). The sub came out almost instantly, which is great if you are looking to eat and leave, but, we were hoping to sit and dine together. So, the nice warm bread, did eventually become cold as we waited or my Boli. The presentation of the sub was good, the meat was piled up well beyond the bread, the lettuce was niceley shredded, the tomato diced, and the oil and vinegar were the perfect mix. My boli arrived about 10 minutes later, just as I had ordered. For size purposes, I would say it was a medium pizza folded over. and sliced into three huge slices. For a small, it was definitely too big for one person to eat in one sitting. It was SOOOOOO cheesy and delicious. The crust was pillowy yet chewy, the cheese was ooey gooey, the meat was not too much, not too little and they did give me as I requested the mushrooms (fresh, not canned). This was delicious in itself, but, man...the sauce.....oh the sauce....it was so sweet and delicous and tasted like summer tomatoes off the vine. Not too thick...not too thin...the pillowy crust of the boli absorbed it perfectly, and together....it made heaven! At the end of the meal you are expected to clean up after yourself (just like any other 1980's pizza joint) and they were nice enough to ask us if we wanted refills on our cokes before we left. Over all: Ambience--I'd say it is a solid 2/5. If you are looking for a perfect date night where eveything is romantic, this isn't the place, unless you met at a 1980's pizza joint and then I think it would be crazy romantic. It's also quite loud just with the staff bantering about. Service: 4/5. They did what they were supposed to do and really nothing more. But, they did do what they were supposed to do. Food: I'm giving this a 5/5! It's hearty. It's well done. It's tasty. I left with left overs. (which after 2 nights in the fridge were still delicious when I reheated them) Cost: A perfect end of the non-pay week treat. Reasonable and hearty. We paid about $30 for our meal, which was ample.
