The other reviews on Yelp started to scare me off of this place, despite seeing it for years and understanding that it has to be decent if it is has survived 30 years of business in some fairly harsh economic conditions. I'm so glad that I listened to my reasoning and didn't listen to the other reviews. Let's get this straight, if you are looking for "INSTA-FAMOUS" location and food presentation, this is NOT your place. The decor is actually something that made me giggle a little bit. 1980's style moulded booths (not fluffy friendly) about 6 on each side of the restaurant. A couple of plastic tables in the middle of the restaurant for large groups or "fluffy people" like myself. Dark red paint on the wall with only 1 piece of artwork, a sign that reads "We have no wifi, pretend it is 1995 and talk to people". (this endeared me most). A wood paneled counter for ordering. A lit up menu above the counter. A make shift utensil and seasonings table. An old trash can. and on this particular day 100's of boxes being made around us (impressively so). The picture I am painting is a 1980's pizza joint. And it really is exactly that, with perhaps the exception of instead of Ms. PacMan at the front, they have 4 gambling machines. To this Gen Xer, I found this refreshing and a true blast from the past. Another relic from the past is their staff. They still hire teenagers. This is both a great thing (teenagers need to work!) and a bad thing as the girls were LOUD and not particularly good at customer service. The adult supervising them was possibly reliving his youth in his ability to play with them. (it wasn't creepy, but, it was kind of sad), instead of managing them and showing them how to provide customer service. But, no one was nasty. Everyone was having a good time. And they got the job done. I ordered an italian boli and I asked for them to add mushrooms to it. They looked at me funny, but, eventually let me get them. My husband ordered an italian cold cut sub, we both ordered 2 large fountain sodas (as per 1980s decor, they came in styrofoam cups). The sub came out almost instantly, which is great if you are looking to eat and leave, but, we were hoping to sit and dine together. So, the nice warm bread, did eventually become cold as we waited or my Boli. The presentation of the sub was good, the meat was piled up well beyond the bread, the lettuce was niceley shredded, the tomato diced, and the oil and vinegar were the perfect mix. My boli arrived about 10 minutes later, just as I had ordered. For size purposes, I would say it was a medium pizza folded over. and sliced into three huge slices. For a small, it was definitely too big for one person to eat in one sitting. It was SOOOOOO cheesy and delicious. The crust was pillowy yet chewy, the cheese was ooey gooey, the meat was not too much, not too little and they did give me as I requested the mushrooms (fresh, not canned). This was delicious in itself, but, man...the sauce.....oh the sauce....it was so sweet and delicous and tasted like summer tomatoes off the vine. Not too thick...not too thin...the pillowy crust of the boli absorbed it perfectly, and together....it made heaven! At the end of the meal you are expected to clean up after yourself (just like any other 1980's pizza joint) and they were nice enough to ask us if we wanted refills on our cokes before we left. Over all: Ambience--I'd say it is a solid 2/5. If you are looking for a perfect date night where eveything is romantic, this isn't the place, unless you met at a 1980's pizza joint and then I think it would be crazy romantic. It's also quite loud just with the staff bantering about. Service: 4/5. They did what they were supposed to do and really nothing more. But, they did do what they were supposed to do. Food: I'm giving this a 5/5! It's hearty. It's well done. It's tasty. I left with left overs. (which after 2 nights in the fridge were still delicious when I reheated them) Cost: A perfect end of the non-pay week treat. Reasonable and hearty. We paid about $30 for our meal, which was ample. read more

Purchased a large pizza and cheese fries. The pizza was okay, not very flavorful but also not nasty. The white cheese on the fries presented the same pattern as the pizza with very little flavor. The service during pickup was amicable. read more

We had her pizza with the family a few nights ago, and everyone enjoyed it. The sauce had a slight sweetness to it, which I think is great compared to the bland sauce. Most other local places are offering around here. Today I tried the cheesesteak and curly fries. Both were good but next time I'm gonna try that meatball sub they have. read more

I came to Shakey Jake's all the time as a kid--I grew up right in Fireside, and it was always a staple for our family pizza nights. I hadn't been back since I was 18, and now at 25, I decided to stop by for old times' sake and grab a sandwich and pizza. As soon as I walked in, the memories came flooding back--especially that iconic purple sign and interior I remembered so vividly from childhood. To make the visit even more special, I had the joy of meeting the new owner. I was reminiscing, and he greeted me with such warmth, even gifted me a T-shirt and magnet. That kind of hospitality really stuck with me. The food? Still amazing. Some things never change--and I mean that in the best way. Shakey Jake's continues to be a beloved staple of the Fireside community, and I'll happily travel that hour just to experience that familiar taste and kindness again. Came here with my two friends after a long day of fasting. We got a chicken bacon ranch pizza, loaded fries, and mozzarella sticks. First off we got a large drink and they do not mess around with these drinks. They are massive ( and now so am i) and free refills. The mozzarella sticks came with hot Mariana sauce and we all really enjoyed them. The loaded fries had bacon and cheese on them but lowkey couldn't taste the flavor. The chicken bacon ranch pizza had really delicious yummy crust. Unfortunately there was also a massive amount of grease but nothing a napkin can't fix. Service was great and had hot soccer men playing on tv, very good. Unfortunately it only gets 3 big booms in my book. read more

The sub was on the smaller side for my liking but got more fries than I expected so that made up for it. I won't discuss the food because I didn't get any. I ordered from Shakey Jakes on Friday at 12:30 pm.Cheesesteak and Onion rings. The person who took my order told me that it would arrive between 1:30 and 2:30 pm. At 2:30, I checked outside: no order. I found that you cannot call the store, simply post. There was a message saying my order had been delivered at 1:20. I checked again:no order. I texted that my order had not been delivered, that I had paid For it, and that I wanted it. I had been working in my kitchen all morning, which is right next to my front door and the window shows the road and parking spaces. They texted me a picture of a unit appearing to be in my condo development, but not mine. I replied that that was not my unit, that I had paid For my order, and that I wanted it. Radio silence. I texted them twice more. No response. I examined the entire website, found two telephone numbers, called them and left messages. It is now late Sunday afternoon, and I have heard nothing. It has been the weekend, but the store is open 7 days a week until 11:pm. This is the most abysmal customer service I have ever encountered , and I would not recommend them to anyone read more

The are currently carryout only. There menu is pretty much basic pizza shop etc. They have been around for over 25 years. My order was called in and ready when they said it was. Service was fast and friendly. I only ordered pizza today. Im picky on pizza. It had and ok flavor. Based on service and the good things i have heard from coworkers. We were headed out of state and wanted to grab something quick to eat on the road. While I ran into Staples to have some printing done, the hubster stepped into what we thought was a new restaurant. Ha! They've been in business for 19 years ~ that says something for their food and service! We shared the hot turkey and cheese boat, one slice of pizza and deep fried mushrooms. Not too bad! we just heard about Shakey Jakes about 2 weeks ago from someone's post and decided to try it. we both got hot subs and they were awesome. The rolls were light and airy. We took a pizza home for lunch the following day and it was ok. Not sure how it would have been if we had eaten it fresh hot. We will need to try a fresh hot one in the shop next time. read more

Shakey Jakes was sold since the former owner retired and it is no longer the Shakey Jakes I've eaten at for about 15 years. The new owner Ethan is rude and arguing with me, a customer over the taste and quality of the food now being served there. Only one original employee still working and it shows. The food is not comparable to when Janet owned it even though Ethan says it's all the same recipe. Sadly they are ruining the recipes bcuz the food doesn't taste like it always has due to the inexperienced teens he has cooking, Except the pizza. Janet and Charlie always made great pizza. Charlie's the last remaining original employee. During my argument with the owner, I told him he's ruining the reputation of Shakey Jakes and should have changed the name when he bought it!!! Janet owned that pizza shop for a long time and worked her butt off to make it what it was and it took the new owner less than 6 months to ruin it. Janet provided a great atmosphere with pleasant experienced employees who cared about the restaurant and the quality of food served!. Can't rave, can't complain... too much. Overall pretty decent. You can only be so picky these days since the Subway menace has pretty much taken over and ran most of the authentic sub places out of business. A decent middle-of-the-road sub, perhaps on the small side. The steak hoagie uses the all too familiar Steakums style chopped meat. I would complain about that, but with the exception of Steakout on E. Market, sadly I don't know any other place in town that still uses actual thinly sliced fresh steak anymore. The steak hoagie doesn't even appear on the menu board which only contains hot subs with names that are hyphenated with the word "pizza." (Weird.) They also use the little baked loaves (pizza dough rolls[?] as opposed to sub rolls) which are all too ubiquitous in southern PA. I've never cared much for them but they seem popular enough. The crinkle cut fries seem kind of out of the food store frozen aisle-ish. I haven't been there much in their 25 year history, so I can't make a general statement, but on this particular trip they seemed pretty slow. I was the only customer in the store and the order took nearly 15 minutes. I feel like this place has potential. If they tried a little harder, with the lack of competition, prime location and unique branding, they could stand out as a great sub/pizza spot. Overall not too bad considering the options, or lack thereof. STILL better than Subway! read more

Best subs in York, PA. The bread is homemade and it is outstanding. It's soft in the center with a firm and chewy crust. I had the Italian sub with oil and vinegar. The veggies were crisp and fresh. It was filling so I only ate half and saved the rest for dinner. I've heard that their pizza and Stromboli are excellent too. I will definitely be going back again and again! read more

If you think they make the best cheesesteak in York then you don't know what the hell your talking about. Service is slow and unfriendly. The booths are uncomfortable. One TV in the place and it is always on something that sucks. The pizza is average. The subs are below average. Bread is very odd with low grade vegetable toppings and way too much lettuce. I only go there because it is close and it is the only pizza/sub shop around my office. York county as a whole doesn't have many good pizza/sub shops.
