I went to Dr. Butler several times because an area on my forehead continued to bleed over a long period of time. I was concerned it was skin cancer. She spent just a few minutes with me and said, "I can tell it's not skin cancer just by looking at it." I eventually went for a second opinion and the first question the dermatologist asked me was if Dr. Butler had done a biopsy. I told him "no." The dermatologist did a biopsy and the results showed basal cell skin cancer that went from my eye brow across my forehead to my scalp. Because Dr. Butler did not diagnose skin cancer or do a biopsy, I had reconstructive surgery done by a plastic surgeon to rebuild my forehead. I have long scars to prove it. read more

I visited Dr. Heather Butler earlier this year for a rash on my foot. I expressed concerns of the cause being fungal related, however she assured me that it was in fact eczema. She prescribed a steroid and Betamethasone Dipropionate, and advised me not to use soap on the area. This was HARMFUL advice. My condition got much worse, and months later I sought a second opinion as I started having doubts about Dr. Butler's diagnosis. The other dermatologist confirmed this was fungal, and recommended to cease my current treatment and being using an over-the-counter solution, which has been working successfully. Dr Butler gave me not only incorrect, but harmful advice, and delivered the advice with such confidence that made me believe I did not have to worry. I will not be going back to Dr. Butler, nor can I in good faith recommend her. read more

My review for Dr Butler is long overdue. I had tried everything under the sun to help my acne since I was a teenager. I was soon approaching 40 and decided that I needed to finally seek out another dermatologist to help me with my problem skin. She put me on accutane and I got results very quickly. I just had my first appointment with Dr. Butler for my mild but persistent cystic acne. I had explained to her that I switched over dermatologists to her because my slow progress with my other dermatologist. Prior to my appointment with Dr. Butler, my most recent dermatologist prescribed me antibiotics for my acne. Doxycycline, Minocycline, then Bactrim as well as topical such as retin-a and clindamycin. In addition to these antibiotics, I have - under the supervision of other dermatologists before - taken retin - A, epiduo, clindamycin, BP 2.5/5/10%, salicylic acid, etc... Nothing worked for my acne. After explaining my constant struggles with persistent acne, Dr. Butler suggested that maybe accutane was the answer. Immediately I was overjoyed as I had longed to try accutane for years but none of my past dermas willingly prescribed me it. Overall, my experience with Dr. Butler was good. Like the other yelp reviewers expressed, the front desk lady's could be a bit more friendly/nice, but they are not. What is important is they do get their job done though. Dr. Butler herself was very kind, and answered every question I had thoroughly. We'll see how accutane goes! read more

I saw Dr. Butler for a second opinion. I had a terrible experience here and would never go back. She was rushed, cold, unpleasant, and didn't make me feel like she cared at all. Maybe because she was busy? Not an excuse. Also, her medical advice was horrible and dangerous. First, I waited over 50 minutes to see the doctor. None of the staff came to let me know what was going on. The nurse was kind and took me back. Another 10 minutes later, the doctor barged in. No knock, no hello, just "what do we have here?" I explained my problem. She was curt and unfriendly for the duration of the appointment. She barely glanced at my skin. I had to tell her to look again, because my problem is small and very unusual. I also said it was on my back but she said she didn't need to see that. I had to ask her repeatedly for a gown so I could change and show her my back. She recommended Accutane. It went something like this: Her: You should take Accutane. Me: (jaw hits floor) Um, did you see on my chart that I suffer from bipolar disorder? Her: (blank stare) Me: Accutane causes depression and suicide ideation... Her: Oh, well, I don't necessarily think that's true. Why this is insane and extremely dangerous: -- Accutane has been seen over the years to cause depression and suicide ideation. As in all things medical, there is some debate. However, enough cases have been seen with enough severity that it's a last resort drug for most people and usually an off-limits drug for anyone with a history of depression. And the evidence is even worse for those with bipolar. *Every other psychiatrist, dermatologist, or GP I'v seen in my whole life has said "you cannot take Accutane given your condition."* Had she read my chart, she would have seen (a) that I suffer from bipolar, (b) how serious it is (based on meds and other info I provided.) But she didn't care. Once I laid down the law that Accutane was NOT an option, she rushed through some other things. She knew next to nothing about the cosmetic lasers that might help and said the nurse already had two people waiting with so couldn't come tell me about them. Left and never looked back. If you need a real dermatologist, go see Dr. Seltzer on Green Street. I'm sorry I spent the time and money to get a second opinion with Dr. Butler. read more

Although she is a nice person who listened to my concerns and problems with cysts, she misdiagnosed me. I was prescribed with a medicated facial wash, topical med tretinoin, and minocyclin pills. It was over $500 for this consultation and mess which I could not believe I refilled 4 times seeing no improvements. Heck, I went to the body shop and bought the tree tea line and found better results. Today, I saw dr Lawrence Schall. He's the dermatologist I recommend seeing. His office is kinda old but he is definitely a quality dr. He knows his stuff because what I have was not cyst, but keloids. He even showed me a book and read to me what my diagnosis was and how it is to be treated, which were injections through some shot. After the shots on my keloids, he gave me a whole box of sample sized topical gels and several facial cleansing bars. Haha, dr butler gave me 3 samples. Dr. Butler is very nice and her nurse is also great, but the front desk staff could use an upgrade. I checked in and wrote my name down on their clipboard when I arrived but for some reason the front desk forgot to pull my chart, so I ended up waiting for 35 minutes while they saw 2 other patients who arrived after me. The nurse was really sweet and apologized even though it wasn't her fault, but no apology from the front desk staff. I can understand if I was kept waiting because the doctor was running behind from seeing other patients, but unfriendly staff who cannot crack a smile or offer an apology after making a mistake is sub-par. read more

I will no longer go to this office to see Dr. butler. She literally takes 3 seconds to glance at your skin before everything is diagnosed as eczema. Either that means you're a really damn good doctor or everything is eczema. She got annoyed when I was pulling up pictures on my phone to show her how bad my skin got a couple days prior because the rash had a tendency to flare up badly on my extremities at night and she belittled me for doing that. I don't see the harm in showing a picture that may help understand or relay how bad things can get considering I'm not making an appointment to see a doctor at 9pm. She is quick to prescribe steroid creams and says to shower the majority of your body without soap (while using the steroid cream). I've read the other reviews about her, saying how she can be cold and dismissive. I don't mind the straight forward and candid personality. But the dismissive attitude is what got me. But maybe those traits just go hand in hand! read more

I see some people mention about the long wait, but I waited maximum of 20 minutes at the most during the 5 visits. I had Dr. Kaplan in Beverly Hills as my dermatologist for last 12 years, but since he is a " Beverly Hills" doctor and pretty expensive, I might switch to Dr. Butler. I recently moved out to the South Pasadena/Alhambra area and I'm not too familiar with where everything is yet, so I've been Yelping everything from restaurants to dermatologists. I recently discovered that I'm allergic to my boyfriend's cat, and it had caused me some discomfort with some rashes that were starting to appear in different areas of my body. So I went out and researched a bunch of different dermatologists I decided to see Dr. Butler based on her reviews from her previous clients on Yelp. The office staff was friendly, and the wait was short. I was in and out with my prescription, and all of my questions answered in about 30 minutes. I had to fill out paperwork since I was a new patient, but that didn't take long either. Dr. Butler was very straight to the point, and she didn't try to get me to do anything different to my skin that may worsen my rash. She prescribed me my prescription and told me that if things should get worse which she didn't see happening that I could just come back in and we'd try something new. She was helpful, but she also just confirmed many of the things I already knew. You can find street parking if you're willing to walk, but if you don't mind paying for parking, their parking lot is cheap. It's only $0.75 for every 30 minutes. Considering that you may not even be there for more than 20 minutes, I think it's worth it. read more

I've been suffering from acne for a really, really long time. Tried everything from homemade mask recipes to eating a strict diet that consisted of everything natural (that obviously didn't last long) to trying to get more sleep to aztec indian secret mask etc etc and I went to multiple derms. Now, my concealer actually covers my blemishes, I'm barely breaking out. She barely looked at my face and knew what to do. At first I was alarmed because how could she know. Well she was the first derm to prescribe me oral medication (beware it's expensive), but after two months I see a lot of improvement. Located in the huntington hospital. It's really hard to miss. Parking is now I think $1 and something per 15 minutes. But really it should only take about 30 minutes. read more

Excellent experience! I was able to get an appointment VERY quickly, which I appreciated since I was going in for something which was very uncomfortable. The woman who made my appointment was very pleasant and caring, and the whole staff was friendly and professional. The nurse who checked me in was very nice. Dr. Butler herself was a truly caring ray of sunshine, who listened very carefully to everything I had to say and diagnosed my problem almost immediately. She also went out of her way to give me lots of samples of the medications she was prescribing and gave me instructions for how I could get an actual prescription filled without it costing much if I needed more. Saving me a lot of money was so very thoughtful of her! The office is clean and stylish. There was a form you filled out when checking in which asked if you were interested in any additional services, mostly cosmetic. But that was it, no one pushed any additional services on me or even brought the subject up. I'm supposed to give my condition a few weeks and return if it hasn't cleared up by then. Though I'm hoping it will have cleared up so I can be done with it, I won't be at all nervous or stressed about having to make another appointment if I need to! Dr. Butler prescribed some medication that was very expensive ($400 for a 1 month supply) after finding out my insurance would not cover the meds, Dr. Butler went out of her way to help me obtain the medication direct from the manufacturer through a discount program. I waited three weeks for the appointment and wanted to seek for acne solutions. After years of trying many many dermatologist, my girlfriend recommended Dr. Butler. Though past Dr's were all quite competent and knowledgeable, Dr. Butler may be my favorite. A very respectful and down to earth manner, never tries to sell any services, if anything shows respect for the cost of her medical services and tries to really do as much as possible in charging. After years of acne prone skin, her suggestion to use less soap and no abrasives has made a substantial difference in my skin. As for the front room staff, which seems to have the bulk of the negative complaints, they are much like all Dr's offices, business like, not overly friendly, nor do they need to be, they do there job. As for wait times, I try to schedule appts. at the best possible time for the office, as a result my waits have been for the most part very reasonable, some short some a little longer, but never as bad as I have experienced elsewhere. She is very personable and never makes me feel rushed. I rarely give five stars, she earns it. read more

She's okay, pretty typical of dermatologists I've had: quick inspection, followed by a lot of prescriptions. I was in and out within 20-25 minutes, which was good. It took me longer to fill out the paperwork than the actual appointment. I was still filling them out after I finished seeing the doctor. I went to this woman's office last year when I was suffering from the feeling of something crawling on my body. I had markings all over my body. This woman, never examined me, touched me, etc. She stood across the room and insinuated that I was nuts. When I told her I felt something crawling, she asked me to take it off myself and give it to her. I complained to their office manager who defended the dr. Additionally, my husband is a doctor and we own a medical practice; so i know how medicine should/should not work. Long story short....I went to another dermatologist in Pasadena who said ...those are mite bites.....we took care of the issue and that was done. The crawling didn't stop, I went back to the dermatologist, who did a scraping ( which he said Dr Butler should have done), and he took blood. I had an elevated IGE level ( which means parasitic matter in blood stream- something foreign)- and biopsied one of the markings on my skin. The biopsy showed that the scrapes were some kind of a burrow. I was sent to an infectious disease dr....Dr Sohan Bassi- in West Covina. He LISTENED, EXAMINED ME and said' You have "GNATHOSTOMIASIS" a parasite I got from eating fish while on vacation in Mexico. I nearly died, as this parasite can eat part of the organs and it had started to do so on my liver. Due to the incompetance of dr's like Butler, I could have died. Another dr told me- most dr's dismiss women especially as delusional or hormonal when something is really wrong. most dr's don't care and dr butler proves that. there are numerous people worldwide out there suffering from something- they just have to go through all the WRONG dr's to find the RIGHT dr to take the time to figure it out. As Dr Bassi said, when in doubt, examine the patient. Some of these drs in my opinion should be stripped of their medical licenses. They do not follow the oath they took when they became physicians, Dr Butler is one such doctor. And I only put ONE star, because Yelp wouldnt let me put negative 10. read more

I went to Dr. Butler 5 times and she was able to help treat a wart I've had for several years. I've only seen her Nov 2009-Feb 2010. It's hard to say what a positive doctor's appointment is. But I was satisfied with her service after my initial appointments, a set of 3 "surgeries" to remove the plantar's wart. She seemed to listen to me that this particular wart had been cut out, burned off, and "removed" several times before so I wanted an aggressive treatment. I've never seen anyone apply the liquid nitrogen so aggressively, which is what I wanted. Also, as a new patient, I was seen relatively quickly, within 2 weeks. And the office staff seems amiable and competent. However, I do not intend to return to Dr. Butler's office. It has become clear that Dr. Butler has several negatives. I have developed the impression that she is not as receptive to patients as I had thought. She does not seem to be able to follow my case for the long-term. And it appears that she is manipulating the insurance company, which includes diagnosing me with a skin disease because I asked if she could recommend a good hand cream, which she gave me a sample of ... I guess it's those wonderful free samples that people rave about. The long version: Strike 1) I was concerned after the third treatment (in December) that the wart was not gone. And I wanted to continue treating it, either with medicine or more liquid nitrogen. I made this recommendation based on previous experiences from the last 10 years; the scarring in the area also made it hard to tell if the wart was actually gone. I know I don't have a dermatology degree; but I have a lot of hands on experience with the wart on my foot. Dr. Butler insisted that it looked gone, "warts are never fully gone" because it's a "virus in the skin" and that if it reappeared, I should make another appointment. Personally, I don't understand why then one wouldn't try taking away a little more skin and virus. I was making an appointment at the end of January. Strike 2) On my first three visits, I experienced mediocre wait times. The time it takes to freeze a wart is so short, that I usually left the office without complaint in under 30min... most of the time was spent waiting. I did not arrive particularly early for my appointments (i.e. 10min before) but I also did not arrive late. For my fourth appointment, I waited over 1hr. I had a 1pm appointment with Dr. Butler -- and a 2:15pm appointment ~1mi away with another doctor that I was late for! There were multiple patients complaining about the wait. Meanwhile company representatives -- I assume the ones providing the free samples -- arrived and went back to meet with the doctors before patients. One met with Dr. Butler, the other with another Dr. in the practice. Strike 3) The billing process in Dr. Butler's office is a nightmare. At first, I paid my copay for my visits at the time of the appointment, which makes sense. Then, I received the explanation of benefits from my insurance company for the first couple visits. I wasn't being charged for an office visit; sometimes, I was being charged for surgery. Well, I quickly met my deductible with that. Ok, so freezing off a wart technically a surgery. I even called Dr. Butler's office and asked would using liquid nitrogen on a wart be an office visit or a surgery; they said surgery. At this point, I preferred being charged a surgery b/c with my deductible met, I'm paying nothing out of pocket. In fact, it would have been nice if they had honestly charged the insurance for the "surgery" on the first and third visit, which would have saved me $30. But according to the office staff, sometimes Dr. Butler only charges for the office visit because it is cheaper for the patient. On my last visit, I was charged for both a surgery and an office visit. Apparently Dr. Butler decided that I had some type of skin condition because I asked her if she could recommend a strong hand cream. Honestly, I do not recall if she actually looked at my hand. I explained that I've recently been washing my hands extremely frequently at work (often with a rough, gritty material used to remove grease) and combined with the cold weather, my hands were chapping, even though I started using Lubriderm. She said she could give me a sample of something. I would also like to note that Dr. Butler never told me that she was diagnosing me with something; it was the office staff who said it when I questioned the bill. Being out another $15 for an "office visit" consisting of a 30sec conversation and free sample, does not bother me half as much as the fact that the lady who works in billing was the one who told me I had some skin condition!!! I was so frustrated that I hung up without asking her to repeat the name of the condition to look it up online. read more

i originally wanted to see Dr. Han but she was all booked and not taking new patients for almost 2 months. The gal on the phone said Dr. Butler had openings within the next 2 weeks, so I went for it. Against my better judgement, mind you... My wait in both the waiting area and the exam room was reasonable - about 20 minutes combined. When Dr. Butler entered she barely glanced at me, and said a curt "hello". She then asked why I was there and I told her. I had a variety of things I wanted to discuss, including the adult acne which has shadowed me through my 30's. she asked what treatments I've tried and I light heartedly answered "everything." This was not true, of course. But she took it as fact and the next word out of her mouth was "Accutane." Now, let me explain. My acne is for the most part unnoticeable because its all under my chin/ jawline. That's it. I'm no dermatologist but my acne doesn't seem severe enough to warrant such a powerful and toxic drug. (On this matter, I am open to hearing your opinions). Anyway, her bedside manner was what prompted this review. She literally rocked side to side while clicking and unclicking her pen at a somewhat frantic pace. She exuded very uncomfortable energy and clearly could not wait to write the prescription and move on. Being the person that I am, this encouraged me to ask her any and every question that came to mind. I tried to lighten the mood with humor and patience but she was not in the least bit receptive or interested in being a concerned and involved doctor. Shame. read more
