We dined at Hearthside Friday 7.17.26 6pm before the Kathleen Edwards Patty Griffin show at the Scottish Rite. I had requested a cozy spot not a table smack dab in the middle of the floor. We were seated at a banquette corner spot which was great. Interior is way smaller than I anticipated from seeing pics but is cozy. Our server, River, was friendly and informative. Food came out at a nice pace. This was EASILY the best meal I have had out in 10-15 years. Food was stellar. Each dish was unique, well seasoned, interesting, and balanced. Positively delicious. I am irritated I waited so long to come here. I don't live near Collingswood. Prix fixe tasting menus are typically not my first choice. My eyes missed the note on their site that ala carte is only available on Wednesdays and Thursdays. I have dietary restrictions and I didn't think I was that hungry. My dining partner is an omnivore but I eat vegan part of the week. I am more a vegetarian leaning pescatarian. I do not eat offal, beef, or pork. I am allergic to beef. Tasting menus are typically problematic for me. This menu was so varied and perfectly proportioned. I had choices I was very happy with. We walked out satisfied but not grotesque. cute byob restaurant in collingswood for wood fire cooking! i've eaten at plenty of steakhouses in philly, but opted to try something new for my birthday. my family came out to collingwood nj, which is a very cute area that i've never been before. the street the restaurant is on is very quaint and cozy! i was very excited to try hearthside, and honestly, my expectations were not met. first of all, this is a very expensive restaurant. the vibes of the restaurant does not match the price tag, but the service is amazing. we chose to order à la carte. for appetizers, we shared the beef carpaccio, the burrata, and the broccoli. i really enjoyed the burrata on the flatbread. i didn't expect the menu to have asian influences, the beef carpaccio was super unique in that it tasted like a pho bowl! however, i did not particularly enjoy the broccoli. the chili crunch taste like lao gan ma, and was not worth the price tag. for our mains, we shared the creste di gallo and the porterhouse special. the mains were the most lackluster. the creste di gallo was super rich but unfortunately overly salty, and my parents refused to take a second bite. the porterhouse was not cooked evenly, which i suppose, is one of the downsides of woodfire cooking. some parts of the steak were well done while others were rare to the point of almost being raw -- perhaps only 1-2 pieces were our desired cook of medium rare. the fries were just fine. we didn't order dessert and instead brought in our own cake for which they charged a flat curing fee of $25 (we had 4 people). they put a candle on the cake for us, but there were no other birthday activities -- no singing, no free dessert, etc -- which is fine. the total ended up coming out to over $100/person. i don't regret having my birthday dinner here, but i definitely don't need to come back. read more

We've had a lot of great meals here. Tonight was disappointing. I'm 9 months pregnant and we sat in a table right across from the kitchen and without exaggeration - I was probably hit 25 times tonight by staff shoving by our table. This is also the first time we were so incredibly rushed. It included taking our drinks when they weren't empty, asking 10x if we were done when the dishes were clearly still half full. The amount of times we were deep in conversation and the staff interrupted us to ask if the food we were actively eating was done- it was unlike any other time we had been here. The food was again great but the rush on an $800 meal for 4 people was absurd - not to mention the staff rushing and hitting a pregnant woman repeatedly was crazy. I don't know if they're trying to turn over tables but this was our first experience with this here but it was so obnoxious and all evening. We came hungry, and left PLEASANTLY plump. We ordered the table side shareable tomahawk steak recommended for a party of 4 or more, and the waiter drastically underestimated my boyfriend and my ability to devour this-- the chimichurri and crispy potatoes and all. Food is not worth the hassle, don't waste your time or money... As someone with over 20 years in the fine dining industry, I understand and respect the purpose of cancellation policies. They help protect restaurants from last-minute no-shows and lost revenue. That said, the way Hearthside handled my recent reservation experience was disappointing, unprofessional, and--most importantly--unwelcoming. I had a reservation for four on a Friday evening. The morning of, due to unforeseen changes with my guests (who have a young infant), I canceled via their SMS system around 9:00 AM. Despite following the process and acting in good faith, I was sent a notice later that day stating I'd be charged a $200 cancellation fee. I called immediately, not to argue, but to try to make it right. I offered to come in myself, to reorder the reservation, even to dine solo if needed. I spoke with multiple staff members, and each time I got closer to a resolution, the goalposts seemed to move. I was told I couldn't dine alone. Then when I had two guests, I was told the table was no longer available. Finally, after confirming I'd come with three other guests, I was told only outdoor seating was an option. We arrived--on time and with all four guests--only to be seated outdoors at a windy, unheated table along the street, despite empty indoor tables clearly visible. When we kindly asked to be moved, we were met with abrupt rejection. From the moment we arrived, we were treated as a burden--not as welcome guests. To salvage the night, we ordered a few starters and planned to move on. Our server, James, was exceptional--polite, attentive, and clearly a professional. He was the only redeeming element of the evening. When we requested the check, James let us know that the $200 "cancellation fee" had been applied to our bill. Despite showing up, dining, and doing everything possible to resolve the situation, we were still being charged as if we never came. My neighbor went inside to speak with the manager and owner and was met with resistance and deflection. I followed up myself, calmly recounting everything--how I had spent my day trying to make this right, how I brought four people, and how our treatment since walking in had been noticeably cold and dismissive. The manager claimed my neighbor had been rude (he hadn't), and responded to my concerns with visible frustration, even telling me "there's nothing to learn here" when I suggested this could be used as a growth opportunity. After a lengthy back-and-forth, the chef finally agreed to refund the $200 charge--but only after a long, draining effort. While they comped our appetizers (which we didn't request), it didn't come close to balancing out the antagonistic and punitive way we were treated. I left the restaurant feeling unwelcome, disrespected, and frankly stunned at the disconnect between Hearthside's reputation and our actual experience. This review isn't written out of emotion. It's written so others don't have to go through the same. Hospitality is more than food--it's how you make people feel. We came to the restaurant in good faith, eager to dine, and left feeling like an inconvenience from start to finish. I hope Hearthside reflects on this not as a one-off, but as a sign that sometimes policy needs to be balanced with empathy, flexibility, and basic human decency. read more

When we sent back the pork chop the waiter did not feel it was sent in a timely manner, did not offer another entree and chef did not bother to come to our table to discuss. You know what you're getting into coming to a restaurant with a $100.00 per person price, but you do expect a chef to have some pride and admit to a poorly prepared dish. We were offered no other recourse they took the dish away and charged full price so my son did not have a main entree. My wife and I received a gift certificate to go to this establishment. When we arrived, we were a little late for our reservation because parking was so difficult to find. We were seated next to the door and literally froze each time the door was opened while trying to enjoy our meal because of the location of the table. The fixed menu was overall a nice menu, but you feel nickel and dimed If you want any items that were elevated in any manner. Also, the food was so overly salted that it was almost inedible. Also, there was an exorbitant use of a hot spice in most of the dishes that was increasingly uncomfortable as you tried to get through the course as it elevated with every bite. The highlight was the serving staff. They were always there to keep your water glass full and were very courteous and cordial and attentive. We did have high expectations that this was going to be a memorable experience, especially for the cost and from the positive verbal reinforcement we had experienced from friends and colleagues who provided us with the gift certificate as a holiday gift. Had we not had a gift certificate we wouldn't have visited this establishment and we are grateful that we did have a gift certificate so that we can avoid the disappointment in the future. We started with the carpaccio which is a must! I usually am not a fan but I'm obsessed with their take on this. I wasn't impressed by the ribeye, some pieces were a little chewy and it wasn't piping hot like I expected since we were sitting in front of the fire it was cooked on but the birthday boy enjoyed it and that's all that mattered! I also would have preferred a different sauce than the chimichurri, maybe something a little on the spice/heat/creamy side. My husband and I celebrated our 20 year anniversary yesterday at this lovely restaurant. Our server, Gabby was thoughtful and attentive. My husband said they were the best scallops he ever ate. My food was good, but the standout of the night was my kumquat cake which was a 10 out of a 10! It was beyond delicious with so many beautiful flavors. First, let me start by saying that the service was five stars. Normally I can nitpick something about the staff whether timeliness or otherwise - but I must say all the staff was courteous, professional, timely, and accommodating. If I were to recommend any restaurant based on the service provided by staff - this would be one of the top-ranking restaurants. They were phenomenal without flaw in any way. Hearthside is a BYOB with a four-course menu - each course having options you can choose between. I can only give feedback on the dishes I have tried. Overall the food was above par for the most part with a few exceptions. For the first course, we had tuna sashimi, Sicilian pistachio butter, sun-dried tomato, and octopus, cilantro emulsion, jicama, jalapeno. The tuna was decently thick and even cut, and fresh, and the pleasant flavors from the tomato and pistachio did not overpower the fish itself. It was slightly more oily than anticipated - but because of the decent size of the tuna cut it was still a delightful dish. The octopus was one of my favorites - it was cooked perfectly, and the smoke from the wood fire was chargrilled into the skin. My only complaint was that the amount of salt was a bit overpowering. I found that it took away a bit from the masterpiece that the octopus was. For the second course we had the cavetelli cavatelli, fennel, lamb merguez, ricotta espuma which tasted remarkably rich and satisfying. I also tried the burrata flatbread which was a menu addition. While the ingredients were fresh, the burrata at the center lacked any addition of pesto or otherwise - so while the ends tasted delightful, the balance was lost in the center of the dish. For the third course we had the half chicken, smoked Calabrian chili hot sauce, dill - it was cooked perfectly but the sauce was a little underwhelming. The second main was the monkfish, sunchokes, mussels, citrus ginger broth. The monkfish again was cooked perfectly, but wasn't anything remarkable. The broth was thin, and while refreshing, there was no component to make it cling to the fish at all. I would have liked to see the monkfish with a thicker sauce more reminiscent of a lobster dish. For the last course we had both the opera cake and the budino. The opera cake was pleasant, layers were even, and the strawberry was delightful. The budino was excessively salty - I salted nutella pudding. As someone who loves salted caramel-like flavors, I was disappointed. This combination did not work and is the only dish I would not recommend. Overall the food was high quality and innovative. For had a few bites and was unable to finish it. It tasted like an overly the price there should be little room for imperfections. I was most pleased with the octopus and tuna first course selections, and most disappointed with the main course and the budino. It can be difficult to get everything right with a rotating menu - I will likely be back again to see if the menu changes the difference in the food. Came for an early valentines dinner and we were not disappointed. The staff is so friendly and everyone works as a team. As soon as your water got down to 1/4 full, they were there to fill it up. Constantly cleaning the table off between dishes and gave some great recommendations for food. Now the food- everything start to finish was phenomenal! We got one starter to share and then each got our own medium and large. Carpaccio was amazing. The jalapeños added a small touch of spice but perfect. The risotto is very heavy and blue cheesey so if you enjoy that, it's the dish for you! The spaghetti is cooked al dente with a lot of lobster and a great little saffron touch. The scallops were cooked perfectly and a good flavor. A little too salty for me but I'm very sensitive to salt- also didn't stop me from eating it because they were that well cooked lol. I'm conflicted about Hearthside. On one hand, if I judge it as a "local restaurant in suburban New Jersey," which it is, I'm impressed by the service and the flavor of some dishes. On the other hand, if I judge it as a "higher-end, award-winning restaurant," which it also is, I'm disappointed, if not angry. My experience is best summed up by going through my dishes one-by-one... 1. Wagyu Beef Carpaccio: this was surprisingly tasty and fresh. I have no complaints, it exceeded expectations! 2. Scallop Special: the flavor was good, but it didn't take long for the butter/oil the scallops sat in to harden into sickly clumps. Also, the portion was small small small small small, which is something I don't generally complain about because I really do believe quality is more important than quantity, but I hate that the restaurant tried to hide how half the container didn't have scallops by covering the empty side with bread. 3. Tortellini Special: now THIS dish ruffled my feathers. Five tortellini is standard at any modern/higher-end restaurant, but these tortellini were pathetic. And I don't say that mean-spiritedly, they were just cold mouthfuls of dough with barely a drop (check out the pictures; no Italian grandmother would approve!) of filling. 4. Orecchiette: great flavors, but again, the portion was small small small small small. Quality was definitely better than quantity here, but the quantity was honestly jarring. So I'm a "meh." There are definitely more expensive places in Philly with small portions too, but I've truly never been shocked by how small portions are at a restaurant except for at Hearthside. read more

I've read so many good things about this place, so naturally I made date night reservations for my husband and I. Booking a reservation over Resy was a pain. Reservations are only available up to 2 weeks in advance, and Hearthside is a very popular spot. You definitely need to book as soon as possible once reservations open for a new day. If not, the only time slot left is the 9pm one. You can also press your luck with first come first serve, even though I would not recommend it. Parking was super easy. There is a metered parking lot within a block if you don't want to park on the street. There were plenty of available spots when we were there, but I'm not sure if it will stay that way during the summer months as the weather gets better. Inside the restaurant, there were huge plastic dividers separating diners, and I also like how the restaurant provides little envelopes for diners to store their masks in, in addition to the already available hand sanitizer on each table. Very nice touch! For food, my husband and I shared 4 small plates and 2 medium plates (pasta dishes), and it was plenty for the both of us. The wagyu beef carpaccio had thai basil, crispy shallots, jalapeno in it, and honestly tasted like a broth-less Pho. It was a little silly. The Hamachi ceviche was a lil too sour for our preference. The Gulf Prawns and the Lamb lollipops were definitely the better small plates we had. The two pasta dishes we had were delicious as well. The desserts were ok. Overall, I would give the food a 4/5. What was exceptional was the service. Our server, Patrick was truly THE best server we've ever had. He made us feel so comfortable and took great care of us. We give service a 6/5. Came here at 5:11PM on a Friday night and was seated at one of the last tables outside. There is currently no indoor dining and no reservations. They opened at 5:00PM and filled up immediately. Due to the 5PM rush, it was a bit of a wait to place our order. We ordered the wagyu beef carpaccio, roasted wedge salad, gulf prawns, orecchiette, and hand shredded fried potatoes with long hot aioli (special- not on the menu). When we were seated we were told another special they had was grilled octopus, but by the time we ordered, they were sold out. The wagyu beef carpaccio tasted exactly like beef pho without the soup. We enjoyed the food and would go back. The only dish that we didn't enjoy was the orecchiette because they were heavy handed on the salt which ruined the dish. read more

My wife and I met up with some long-time friends here, one of whom lives in Collingswood and has been multiple times. I'd always wanted to go pre-COVID, but reservations were very hard to come by. So our local friend went there at 5pm to put in our names and we were seated soon thereafter. Let's just say that it wholly lives up to--and possibly exceeds--its reputation! Despite their simple descriptive names, the dishes were quite innovative, taking things in new directions of taste and texture. The wedge salad was a good example: Romaine instead of iceberg lettuce, charred on a grill, serving as a base for the conventional bacon and bleu-cheese dressing. The result was incredibly tasty. Between the four of us, we managed a good sampling of the menu and I have to say it's one of the most impressive restaurants I've been in recently. For two, they recommend approximately 5 plates between the small/medium/large sections of the menu so we ordered the Gulf Prawns, Tagliatelle, Agnolotti, Pork Blade Steak, and Scallops. Some thoughts about our experience: - The Gulf Prawns were super flavorful and I loved the slightly charred toast to sop up all the sauce. A little messy to eat though so not the ideal first date food. - From the medium section, I can't stop dreaming of the Tagliatelle. Everything was perfection from the pasta to creamy sauce ratio to the savory duck. I was definitely tempted to order another plate! - The Agnolotti was also really good - I thought the flavor pairing was unique but not my personal favorite. The texture of the pasta, again, was perfect - different from the Tagliatelle but amazing nonetheless. - Both the proteins from the large section were done extremely well, but we thought that the flavor profiles were not particularly standout. Personally, I didn't care for the Smoked Raisin Mole and my boyfriend wishes there had been more bite to the Pork Blade itself. Good, but probably wouldn't order again. We both agree that the Scallops were seared to perfection, but the caper relish was too heavy/too salty for the dish, overall still good though. My friend was finally able to snag a reservation after lots of attempts and we went together for dinner last week and we were not disappointed. Cute little corner spot in Collingswood and the building itself as you walk up definitely looks distinctive compared to the other stores/shops along that street--probably due to the floor to ceiling glass windows that surround the side and front of the restaurant. We were seated at the Chef's counter which was a great spot for our first time there. We got a full view of the wood fire ovens along with all the chefs prepping everyone's dishes while we ate. Just a fair warning it is pretty hot/warm sitting right there so if you run hot already maybe this will not be the most comfortable seat for you. We started with the hamachi ceviche which was very fresh and bright tasting. Really loved the broth that it sat in and both of us kept spooning it onto our plates. We LOVED the asparagus appetizer though. This is a must. A very different and creative way to serve asparagus, I just don't think I've had a dish like it before. Well cooked, seasoned, and the lardons contributed to the richness of the dish. There was a sweetness to kind of round off the creamy hollandaise and saltiness and richness of the lardons and asparagus. We then had two pastas, the duck tagliatelle and the special that night which was a ramp pesto zucca. The duck tagliatelle was good but I feel like I've had better elsewhere. The ramp pesto zucca was very good however and I could have 4-5 more dishes of that. The zucca pasta was super interesting and was the first time I had something like it. We then had the pork blade steak as our entree with a side of the crispy potatoes which they gave us a lot of. The mustard dipping sauce to go along with the potatoes is great. The pork blade steak was super moist and juicy and we loved the mole sauce underneath of it. The jicama slaw on top gave the dish the perfect amount of acid. Great finish to our savory dishes. We then tried the strawberry panna cotta, creme brulee tarte, and guava sorbet. All 3 were good desserts. I liked the panna cotta and the sorbet the best. Being a lover of traditional creme brulee, I think the cornmeal tart pastry just made the creme brulee feel different to me. But objectively was great. Just my preference! Sorry for the very long review but we had such a great experience that I couldn't not write all about it. The service was also excellent and the chefs in front of us were very friendly and engaging when they weren't busy preparing everyone's food. Absolutely adored the food. My girlfriend and I had an early Valentine's day dinner and it was a great experience. We had a four course meal with a lot of sharing Appetizer - lamb chops and beef carpaccio Pasta - rigatoni and bucatini Entree - pork chops and half chicken Dessert - bread pudding As a collective whole, the dessert shined for me. The texture of the bread pudding alongside the ice cream was spectacular. The juices of the blackberry mixed in was so good and you can really taste the molasses. My regret is not taking a photo to share. I would also like to shoutout the beef carpaccio as well. It was a very unexpected taste and texture profile that I enjoyed. Service was absolutely spectacular too. Very attentive staff. The ambiance was warm. I do wish the seating was not as tight but the food and service more than made up for it. read more

This week we finally were able to get into the Hearthside BYOB. Reservations are extremely hard to get (usually a month or more in advance) and we had our table of four lined up for quite some time. There seems to be a few restaurants outside of Philadelphia and in South Jersey that are building great reputations. Hearthside is one of these and definitely lived up its high reviews and acclaim. Collingswood still has Blue laws so the restaurant is BYOB. The atmosphere of the restaurant is very nice, simple and elegant. The kitchen is open and patrons can watch their meals being prepared. There are tables outside and some propane heaters. The menu consists of small, medium, and large plates. Sharing is encouraged. What our table of four ordered: Grilled octopus - butternut squash, palapa, hazelnuts Gulf prawns- garlic, chili, lemon, and parsley Roasted Caesar-house croutons, parmesan, boquerones 40 oz. Prime Dry-aged Porterhouse-mixed mushrooms, leeks, crispy potatoes. This was large and shared by our part of four. Everything we ordered was delicious and recommended without question. I cannot even begin to write how good everything was. Even the desserts were outstanding. We ordered the carrot cake and a coconut milk panna cotta. Service was attentive, knowledgable, and friendly. He explained everything in perfect detail. Our water glasses were topped off regularly and our server ensured our wine glasses were full. We had a great meal here. Reservations are sometimes tricky but we were lucky enough to go on waitlist and received a text from Resy and able to snag a prime time Saturday reservation . We started with three starters the mussels in coconut curry sauce which was so good. You definitely have to like that flavor profile and it's served with grilled bread to savor the broth. The grilled wedge which was chock full of cheese and bacon and cheese. The ceviche was also fresh and bright. We opted to try a pasta dish as not to miss out and went with the sausage and orichette. This dish was so flavorful, saucy and spicy and delicious. We opted for the salmon dish which is prepared medium (which honestly could have used some more time cooking) , the pork dish with molé sauce and frisée salad. This dish was definitely good flavor. I didn't feel the molé vibe was more bar b que esque but still such good flavor. The third entree was the classic half chicken which is so flavorful and cooked perfectly. We did skip dessert this time around since we were time crunched. Do not forget to bring your wine this restaurant is byo. Amazing food and service. The melon salad had just the right combination of salty sweetness the pasta with roasted corn with rich creamy sauces had crunch and sweetness. Thoroughly impressed with this restaurant. There is a lot of hype as you read articles in Philly Mag or reviews on Yelp, but it lives up to all the expectations. Let's start with the service - top notch. Friendly, attentive, knowledgeable, the whole nine. They went above and beyond to offer vegetarian options for the entree. The atmosphere is upbeat and exciting. Great music playlist, open air space, you can watch the chefs cook and prepare food pretty much from anywhere in the restaurant. The interior is lined with candles and wood finishings - super comfortable. We even felt this way during COVID, all the seating was spread out or blocked off with plexiglass. All tables came with personal hand sanitizer. Now the food...where to begin, where to begin. We absolutely splurged on this meal and did not regret it one bit. The menu is sophisticated, the plating is elegant, seeing it from the menu to being executed on the plate is true art. Appetizers: - wagyu beef carpaccio: this was my first time trying a dish like this. If I could describe the dish in one word, I would say "fresh." The beef was soft and earthy, topped with crunchy vegetables that really gave it a nice pop. - coconut curry mussels: this is a big dish for an appetizer, could easily be an entree. The nice thing is that the coconut curry sauce is light (compared to a red/diavolo sauce) so it didn't quite fill me up. The lemongrass focaccia was a really nice touch, and paired nicely with soaking up the juice. - black truffle risotto: unbelievable!! Hand-made pasta in a black truffle cream sauce with roasted artichokes - perfect combination of creamy and crunchy. Very filling and definitely shareable. - orecchiette: wow - I could have eaten this 10 times over. Thick and creamy pasta, packed with a spicy punch from the long hots, but not overpowering as it was matched with the savory earthy flavors of the fennel sausage & broccoli rabe. - mushrooms: can't say enough good things about this. They based the framework of the meal around the scottish salmon dish - shitaake mushrooms were prepared on a bed of vegetable foie gras and finished with a miso pho broth. Out of this world!! So appreciated their accomodation to a vegetarian request and the use of local, seasonal produce. - smoked pork chop: this was a home-run for me. Really slick plating, packed with flavor. The pork was cooked perfectly, and the juicy meat was matched with a delicious spicy/crunchy coating. Furthermore, the apple chutney really cut the savory/salty flavor of the pork and provided a nice fresh touch to the dish. From start to finish, I was just totally impressed. Would highly recommend checking this place out! On the plus side - it is BYO! So take into consideration what you would save on drinks, and get that extra appetizer (or 2) read more
