Our last meal at Hearth was so good! Since the pandemic we have been eating in our car and Hearth made our last dining adventure a five star experience. When I called in our order, the hostess was super friendly and gladly accommodated our request to have no salt added to our dishes. When I picked up our food everyone at the restaurant was friendly and our food was well packaged and the desserts were in a separate bag (which some restaurants can't figure out because your hot food always goes well with cold key lime pie, right?). Granted our mobile dining room (aka car) could have been cleaner but we didn't care at all because we had really tasty butternut squash soup with creme fraiche, pepitas, and pumpkin seed oil. The mussels with white wine, cream, and speck were also good tasting, as was the cocoa & coffee short rib with blistered shisito peppers and carmelized polenta croutons. But the star of the show had to be the 14 ounce grilled strip steak. I have enjoyed the strip steak at Hearth before but when we visited a month or so ago I overheard that they started using grass fed beef for the steak. What a difference. The steak was phenomenal and better than any steak house in the area. It was perfectly cooked and served with delicious Brussels sprouts with bacon and carmelized onions, butter braised leeks, and sauce at poivre. It was so good that I can't see not ordering it on our next visit. Dessert was the reliable, always delicious lemon tart with graham cracker almond crust. A perfect ending to a wonderful meal. Oh wait...you're still here. Well in that case you will also want to try Hearth's fantastic crab dip and pumpkin agnolotti with pecans, brown beech mushrooms, Marsala cream, and sage brown butter We had those on a previous visit and they are both excellent. I can't believe I've been living in Kennett and never tried Hearth Kitchen! I heard great things for years, and I love La Fia and Merchant Bar both, but Hearth Kitchen was never quite convenient (since we usually prefer to walk to dinner in the borough). We decided to give it a try over the weekend, and I was blown away. First of all, it had a good menu of mixed drinks and wine--a nice change among so many BYOBs in the area. Second, the food was amazing. We shared a number of menu items, and each was more delicious than the next. The calamari was perfectly cooked. The caesar salad was really big (even the small size), and the dressing had just the right amount of anchovy flavor. The cannelloni is the reason I will probably be back again very, very soon. The chicken was perfect, the pasta was perfect, and the mushrooms made it a great Kennett Square choice. I can't stop thinking about it. Make a reservation (can be done online), as it was really busy on a Friday night. And, correspondingly, it was super loud while people sat at the bar and waited for tables when we got there at 7:30, but it quieted down by about 8:30/9:00. I really appreciated that because we had a reservation, we did not have to wait. This is definitely a great pick if you're in town visiting Longwood Gardens, or if you're local and looking for a nice restaurant. read more

We went here Saturday night after attempting to go to Chadds Ford Tavern (which was mobbed) so we decided to continue down Route 1 to see what we would find. We spotted Hearth Kitchen in this strip of stores and thought we would take a chance. REALLY glad we did. It was still happy hour so we decided to eat at the bar, really small but quality craft beer selection, many unusual drinks like "Sweater Weather" where a lit cinnamon stick is put into the drink to bring smoke. We had the pizza's off of the happy hour menu, which were only $13 and were wood smoked style, super good! But the best thing about our visit was our server/bartender Frank, he really made the experience so fun, we want to come back just to see him again, oh and of course to drink some beer :) read more

Still 5 stars. We've done take out from them twice while being socially distant and the food is still great. We've had the bucatini, the parpardelle, and the soppressata pizza. Saw their happy hour and thought to give a try. The pics looked good on yelp so... we got the soprasatta pizza and the mushroom. Both were bland, they just lacked flavor. Let me start with the positive, because there were great aspects of our visit and I was genuinely excited to try this establishment. The Summer Smash cocktail is fantastic. Think freshly made adult fruit punch with just the right amount of kick. Brick-Oven Meatballs are a great appetizer that comes paired with a delicious sauce. The Margherita pizza was very good, clearly a freshly made crust. Now with the bad. I was part of a group of four that has a combined total of over 40 years in the service industry between us, with two of us working as managers at our own stores. We are extremely patient when we go out because we have been on the other end of the table. We almost left before our entrees came out. We ordered a couple of drinks from the bar and waited roughly 20 minutes for the first cocktail to get to the table and another 10 for the second, which alone is really not a big deal. The appetizers came about 5 minutes later. We were finished with our appetizers and waiting for our entrees when our server came over and said that they had experienced a system crash and that our check was lost, so she needed to take our order again. Now, as someone who has experienced an actual system crash, I can say that did not seem to be the case because other tables got their food just fine. The manager was made aware of the situation and chose to circle our table, but never made any attempt to talk to us. We waited at least another half hour for our entrees to come out. The entire time we were waiting our server avoided the table, so we did not get any refills on our drinks. When the food finally did come out, one of the entrees was the wrong dish but we were told the correct dish would be out momentarily. Those of us who did get our food did not have silverware and ended up grabbing them from another table. We waited another 10ish minutes before we just asked for boxes and the check because we did have somewhere to be afterwards. You want speedy service, ask for that because those were on the table in a flash. It was not until we were paying the check and trying to get out of there that the manager stopped to talk to us. All he did was smile at us and pat me on the shoulder as though we were sharing an inside joke as he said "How was the food that you 'did' get? Thank you for your patience." The 40% that they knocked off the bill was nice, but not enough to make me even consider coming back because of how this situation was handled from start to finish. read more

As i was thrusting myself from one appointment to the next, I had just enough time to grab a bite and wanted to give Hearth Kitchen a try.... here is a quick and easy review of my quite delicious late lunch. I entered the restaurant and was promptly greeted by the barman, a slender, taller fellow with a welcoming smile. He asked if I would care for a table, to which I declined saying that I would like to grab a quick lunch at the bar. He immediately placed a filled water glass at my seat and offered the menu as well as the "restaurant week" features that they are offering. The menu is concise and well thought out with enough diversity to please most people and shows a culinary imagination and thoughtfulness to flavour. I ordered off of the "restaurant week" menu, which was more or less an array of the most popular items from the regular menu. I had: Gazpacho Soup - a spectacular version of the classic, served with some herbs and croutons. A hint of sweetness, which I first found out of place and came to love on my second and all subsequent bites. A lite hint of spice, but integrated perfectly. I could have just had two portions and been a little more health conscious but.... Grilled Cheese Sandwich - if you are going to have the guts to put a grilled cheese sandwich on your menu, you better have one heck of a reason and recipe unless you are a diner... well, the sandwich certainly deserved to be on the menu. Texturally perfect, with the right mix of cheese, grilled tomatoe and some light leaf mixed greens. It was served hot to warm at the perfect temperature to eat straight away. French Fries - so, I didn't order them separately, they came with my sandwich. These were so memorable that they deserved their own paragraph. A good sized pile of the fries that were cooked so that the balance between crunch and softness was the effort of a french fry fanatic. Fries at many places come out too crunchy or soggy, to thin or too thick, this was the perfect size and doneness. Seasoned just slightly, giving the slightest enhancement to the flavour. I had them with a side of truffle aioli, because ketchup on a french fry this good would be a sin. Al in all, a great new addition to Chester County's thriving dining offerings. Certainly worth a try and I will add it to my rolodex of dining spots. read more

Hearth Kitchen came up when we were searching for a place to eat close to Longwood Gardens. We got there around 7:30 on a Thursday and they were doing a business but we were seated right away. The place has a cozy vibe with low lighting, candles at the tables. It's very clean and simply decorated. It's bigger than it appears from the outside. We split the cheese/meat board and the speck and corn pizza. The cheese board had a nice variety of spreads and accoutrements. The pizza was delicious. It had so much flavor, was cooked perfectly, and was really unique. We brought some home and it was just as good the next day reheated. If I'm back in the area I would definitely come here again. We only had a small sampling of the food but there were many things on the menu that sounded good and the food that we did have was delicious. read more

Our go to place in the age of isolation. The menu changes weekly, and the take out salads,dinners, and cocktails are well suited for take home. We lace the order on line, choose our pick up time, then drive to the shopping center. Wait n the lot for a call from them, drive up to the door, they load it into the back seat, and away we go. We had not been here for some time, but we were hungry and thought a bite at the bar would be a good bet. The pour on my wine was generous. Yay. We started by ordering the crab dip. To me, so very salty, loaded with old bay. I could barely choke it down. It made me regret the bacon/fig pizza we had ordered. What a surprise, it was awesome. Don't knock it till you try it. We were in town to see Longwood Gardens and stopped here for dinner. It was delicious and we would definitely come again if we were in the area! For appetizers we got the grilled octopus, slow-roasted baby back ribs, and bread. The octopus was cooked well, the ribs were well-seasoned, and the butter that the bread came with was to die for. Yikes. Came by around 3:30 pm on a Thursday after a visit to Longwood Gardens. Got seated easily with four adults and two kids. Lovely decor. Table next to us had some very nice-looking drinks they were enjoying. Service was quite slow, even though restaurant was only about half full. Tables sat "unbussed" for extended periods of time while we were at our table. When waiter finally came for drink orders, we put in order for kids cheeseburger. Came back totally overcooked, even for a kids burger. My son finished the burger before the waiter ever even came back to take the meal order from the adults. Ordered an additional kids cheeseburger for my younger son to munch on, and specifically asked for it to be cooked medium. That one came out even more well done than the first! And without cheese. They took it back to add cheese, and almost ten minutes later it returned. New patty? Don't know, but it resembled a hockey puck, now with cheese. Less than half of it ever got eaten. When the adults' pizzas came out, they were good, probably a 6 or 7 out of 10. Very nice crust edges, albeit a bit floppy in the middle (not unexpected with a thin crust pizza). My husband and I visited on a Friday night around 6PM. This was our first time at Hearth Kitchen. Upon walking in, we immediately loved the decor and ambiance. It was casual yet classy. We were seated immediately across from the kitchen. I sat down and realized my first turn off was watching a lady in the kitchen scratch her nose with her bare hand and then continue to garnish the dish before the waiter served it. She scratched her nose with her bare hands- that can't possibly be a good look for a restaurant that is trying to be classy. The food was also ok. The grilled cheese appetizer was literally basic grilled cheese, cut up, with tomatoes garnished over top. The grilled cheese itself tasted like the ones we used to get in our college cafeteria. We didn't finish the dish and the waiter noticed. We also asked for some bread and butter, which you had to request, otherwise they wouldn't offer. I'd say the bread was the best part of the meal. We then ordered the gnocchi and mushroom pizza. The pizza reminded me of basic pizza I had at one of those make your own pizza places. The truffle oil was definitely not good quality, it was the type you can buy at a normal grocery store. The gnocchi was also ok but the kale threw the dish off. We skipped dessert but the coffee pudding did sound good on paper but I had zero hope after we had our meal. This place has potential but they need to step up their ingredient game and also re-evaluate what diners can see from their seats. Nose scratching and garnishing with the same hands can be a turn off. I don't think we'll be going back. If you want good pizza, I'd suggest driving a little bit farther and visiting Pizza by Elizabeth's in Greenville! read more

After reading the mixed reviews I had my doubts but have to say our group of 5 was pleasantly surprised! We had made reservations, were seated promptly after a warm greeting at the door as we arrived. Our group ordered 2 bottles of wine, both half price. I had a Chilean Syrah and found it to be very good. It's rare to find a special like that for a decent wine, and even more rare on a Friday night! Our meals included pizza, salad, pasta. Well let's start out with the bar. Old fashions....best in the area. I tried all the Kennett bars. I have to say this place has one of the best bars in the area. Now food....homemade pasta. Do I have to really say more. Meatballs were great, better then mine. Go in sit at the bar and hope Chelsea and Gary are working and you will absolutely enjoy your dinner. An interesting experience. Maybe they were busier than they anticipated. The food was good, but we requested salt and pepper upon delivery--20 minutes later we were half finished our meal and it still hadn't arrived. We were also not provided napkins. We watched for our waitress or other staff to grab someone's attention but were sadly unsuccessful. After our meal was cold, a gentleman finally approached to ask us how everything was. We explained our predicament, and without an apology, he righted the lack of salt and pepper and bestowed one napkin upon our group of three. One napkin. I'm still confused. Our family jokes that everything is great at Hearth kitchen but one thing.... the service. The waiters aren't friendly at all- almost act like they are doing you a favor to wait on you.
