We drove up and let me tell you the other reviews were so accurate...it was definitely not a place that you just happened to walk past...you have to be deliberate if you are coming here! I was in town last April for a women's convention and I am a Yelper, what can I say. Had this place bookmarked long before the trip...and so my friends wanted to know where we were going for lunch...they know I am a foodie...so they trusted me! So off we go...we drive up in front of the place and they were all asking me where the hell I was bringing them. There was a guy that was standing outside that asked us if were coming to the restaurant...and I really wasn't sure if we were at the right place. From the outside it didn't look like a place we would go....so he leads us inside to the restaurant. It literally looked like they just set up the place this morning to serve food....there was a bathroom sink in the restaurant up against the wall, next to our table! We ordered our food...I had the catfish...and all my friends ordered different things...I wish I could remember all they ordered. But I have to tell you that despite all their apprehension at the beginning of this adventure...there was none once the food came. Not one of them was complaining about the food... It is a very eclectic place, the waitress was very friendly and told us all about the restaurant, her dad (the chef), her mom...and it was worth the trip! Man, this place was fantastic! When we first arrived to NOLA we were starving! While we dropped our bags at our Airbnb and I did a search for fried chicken. We didn't want any fast food, just something delicious. Heard Dat Kitchen just kept popping up on Yelp! I narrowed it down to 2 places, but went with this one because I knew for certain it was black owned. The pictures of the food look good. So we caught an Uber. When we got there I realized this was in a neighborhood and not anything like a tourist trap. We walk in the door to this VERY tiny room and a line with people holding menus. I assumed we had to sit outside because I didn't see anywhere else to sit. There was a very nice woman who was taking orders and she asked if we wanted to dine in and I said yes. She said just a moment, and handed a bag of food to an Uber eats driver saying make sure you hold the bag this way so the food doesn't get everywhere in there. I knew I was going to like this place! She then took us outside and we walked past the outside tables around a little corner of the building and inside and there was a little dining room. It was very quaint and homey. The woman serving us I then realized from pictures and articles on the wall was the owners daughter! We ordered food and everything I tasted there was fabulous! Seasoned to perfection, and I don't say that a lot lol. We ended up eating there a few days later too lol. And she remembered us, and even what we ordered. "Pittsburgh!" Went here in a whim while in town and close by. It's a local spot but it was delicately and we enjoyed everything we ordered.

Never judge a book by its cover. Yes, it's a sketchy area. Yes, the one table entrance is unusual. BUT ... all that aside if you don't stop you'll miss an amazing experience worth stopping in for. They do have a dine in area though it appears most people prefer take out. In an area that appears to have limited venue options for a restaurant, this one has established itself as standout in an unusual space. Let's start with the Dat Crawfish Fries. If I were Emeril Lagasse I'd say BAM!! Do not pass up the opportunity to enjoy some of the best fries you'll ever eat. My main course recommendations are the Bourbon Street Chicken and the Superdome. Trust me when I tell you, you can't go wrong. Especially knowing they make their own homemade fruit punch. The food was really good but this is a to-go only kitchen. I called and asked ahead and was told they can accommodate 6 inside and there's more seating outside. I had a party of 5. I took that to mean that the largest party they can seat is 6. When I got there, the dining area is a long countertop with 6 stools in a hallway. No problem but it was 85 degrees in the dining area. It was actually better to sit outside. Thank God it was overcast that day otherwise it would've been unbearable. Great food, just get it to-go. read more

Let me tell you something about a hole in the wall. It's a spot for some of the best grub in any city, ever! It's also called a dive or that spot that's off the beaten path ( in the hood or off a country road). You know what I mean? That place looks Iocals hit any night of the week. I have been to this place plenty of times. The food is spot on. However, I attended today and the food was great. But The young lady who took my order decided she was going to finish watching whatever she was watching on her phone before answering my question. I was literally .2 seconds away from walking out. As I was turning to walk out, she put the phone down and acknowledged me. Businesses should be very intentional about the staff working the front of the house. If they won't put the same level of care and attention as you would, they should not be the first point of contact for the business. And cell phones should be put down the minute a customer walks in. After reading their Yelp reviews, I knew Heard Dat Kitchen was exactly what I was looking for. The food was incredible. The portions are good and prices are reasonable. My absolute favorite was the shrimp and grits. I'm still having cravings for this now. With this said, the food is made upon ordering and this restaurant is popular so be prepared to wait in line. As I walk up to a walk-in closet sized store front I was greeted warmly by staff. Maybe there is more seating in the back? From what I can see the front could only seat a table for two. Perfect for me! After much debate we ordered the bourbon street chicken and shrimp and grits. And DAT was the best meal I had in NOLA. The food served here can stand up to any four star $$$ restaurant in the city. Taste, texture, presentation, and service!- all top notch. I would come here once a week if I could. This place is all dat! Not even sure how we found it. Googling restaurants led me to a yelp page with the reviews. I called to make reservations on a Saturday. Only open from 11-4 dining, to-go afterwards. When we got there a really sweet girl led us to the dining room. Our waitress was on point. We ordered craw dat fries - amazing. We each ordered entrees one of us had fried fish, the other fried chicken. Both over a bed of Mac-n-cheese with some more of that craw dat sauce poured over the top, potato salad and peas. Delish! And if we weren't already full enough we split a bread pudding. Yum! This place is stupid good!!! This restaurant has certainly made a name for itself in the year or so that it's been open. It seems that every time there's a "Best New Restaurants" list, Heard Dat Kitchen is on it. Up until recently, the place was only take-out so as soon as the opening a dining room section, I made it a point to stop by. Heard Dat is located smack dab in the middle of a neighborhood and the only reason I knew which building it was is because of Yelp. I parked easily and popped in. I told the woman behind the counter I was there to eat in and she lead be around the building and down an alley to a room on the side where the dining room was. Everything sounded so good, but I decided to go with the shrimp and grits. The shrimp were tail-off and the grits were creamy and tasty. There was also corn in it, which was pretty different, but I liked it. I liked that the portion wasn't too big, it was perfect for lunch and it was only $10. In fact, most of their dishes are around the $10-$14 range, which is pretty great considering what you get. I have to go back and get the red beans and rice with fried chicken. Okay so this is a grungy little place in the hood and your order is taken by a lady behind bars. This area is not that appealing especially if you are not from that part of town. There are people hanging out on the corner and in front of the place but they are harmless thats just their day job. The food you order is cooked behind a wall, and you can not see whats going on but the smells are very good to my nose. Funky little place off the beaten path that is well worth visiting. Got the following: Bourbon street love: 4 stars, the fried chicken was perfectly fried and crispy with the perfect amount of heat. The sauce on it was delicious as well. It comes with Mac and cheese, which I felt was too runny and didn't hold up to the fried chicken. The potato salad on the side was more like a "mashed" potato salad, but it was delicious and I would have loved more of it. The sweet tea is different from what one would expect from sweet tea, but in a good way. Their sweet tea has some sourness to it that is refreshing and surprising. Dropped in for dinner on this place after reading the reviews on several sites. The menu is small but I found myself struggling to choose which dish to eat. Lots of good looking choices. I settled in on the bourbon street chicken over mac and cheese with a side of bread pudding and a glass of dat shyt. There aren't a lot of seats at night. I think its mostly takeout. The cashier said they have another seating area during the day. However we were able to find a seat outside. The food came out quickly and we even received a visit from the owner to ask how the food was and to thank us for coming. That was awesome! The chicken was delicious and I would highly recommend it. The bread pudding was also good and was eaten so fast I didnt get a picture. My only complaint and it's a small one is that all the drink options contained sugar. Holy crap this food is amazing! Had the super dome signature dish which was blackened fish with lobster cream sauce and add mash potatoes and corn. The best soul food in New Orleans. It is a pretty dangerous neighborhood the cashier is behind bars to prevent a thief and while we were waiting for food there were two different people that came in asking for cigarettes or money. We got a groupon and you got two vouchers (you can only use one at time-but still worth it). It appears to be only take out. We also got the bread pudding which had the best sauce!!! Literally the best place... We just finished food but I want more right now! Update: i didn't think it could get any better but I literally had the best the best fried chicken on Mac and cheese called the bourbon street special. This is my third time in NOLA and second time at Heard Dat Kitchen and lawdddddd this place is HEAVENLY. Now I love me some good food and I always struggle to find it in Nawlins (yes I know it's the food Mecca blah blah) but I can always count on this place to make me happy. I said I would be back in Oct and I sureee did and the waitress (owner's daughter) remembered. She also remembered exactly what I ordered from three months ago. Service pretty rude except to locals, food was not as flavorful as i expected. Shrimp n grits didnt have any kind of gravy/sauce- just grease. Shrimp were tasty tho, grits were creamy but fairly bland- a sauce really could make it a winner. Also got the Mardi Gras Mambo- the fish was the best part. Well seasoned, crispy. I used my paid value for the Groupon offer and still had to order the Signature dishes. They worked with me as I only wanted 1 and just gave me an up charge on the 10 wings with onion rings, but I thought the amount paid could be used towards whatever once it expired. These expired in January 2018. Either way. I don't know if they previously had dine in but this is solely take out with a line for ordering, a few chairs lined up and it's hot as sweaty sin. EDIT: the restaurant does have dine in. Dine in is open Tuesday - Saturday. They use whole wings but cut in 2. I'd advise you to eat your food while it's hot.
