This is a Jazz Fest must after the shows. Every year we leave the track and walk to Liuzza's. It's a local neighborhood bar that has super strong drinks and is cash only on these days. Lunch was just ok. Certainly nothing we had was noteworthy nor memorable. Doubtful we'll return. The gumbo was thinner than we expected. The shrimp on our po'boy didn't have any flavor, which led us to believe they were not wild caught. The sandwich was mainly bread with fewer shrimp on ours than most po'boy's we've enjoyed over the years. The service was very good. The building isn't very big but looks great. Overall, we enjoyed a very average lunch at a restaurant that in our opinion gets much higher ratings on Yelp than we feel are warranted. For what our lunch cost, and based on the lack of the usual real-deal, Nola palate-pleasing experience, we can think of more than a dozen places within 15 minutes with better food for the same price. read more

The food here has drastically improved since my last visit years ago. Their turtle soup is amazing with huge chunks of turtle in it larger than any other turtle soup I have ever eaten. The BBQ shrimp poboy has really stepped up and now is much bigger with a LOT more shrimp than the last time Iate it. The "Breathtaking Beef" poboy has also drastically improved from my last sampling of it although it could still use more horseradish and some Creole mustard added to it. Speaking of Creole mustard that is the only thing that fell flat on my three visits I made over the past couple of weeks as all three times when I requested Creole mustard on my po boys and on my cheeseburger it was never applied so I had to make another request to find some mustard. The crawfish etouffee is also quite nice while the burger is really large and the fries that are served with it are nice as well. The garlic oyster poboy and the Reuben are also nice sandwiches you should try at some point. The seafood platters and shrimp remoulade are also good and they have a decent choice of daily specials. The ambiance of this place is the biggest cool factor here as it is a complete and total classic New Orleans dive with lots of character and characters that can be seen here. The beef po boy and the bbq shrimp Po boy are a 10/10. I tried the chicken tortilla soup and it was good but not something I would order again. What made the visit perfect is our server. Kaysee was so attentive and engaging guiding us along. She kept checking on us and was very friendly. The restaurant inside is a bit run down but it is so charming and welcoming. We have enjoyed visiting Luizza's several times throughout the years. Our last visit was 6 years ago. While this visit was good the food offerings seemed to have changed. We loved the BBQ shrimp plate we have had on previous visits but now they offer a po boy version which didn't look as yummy. This time we had the shrimp plate and the daily special of Creamy home-made butter beans served with a pork chop. The shrimp were abundant, tasty and cooked perfectly but the fries were soggy and coleslaw was not my favorite. The pork chop was fried with a great crispy coating but the butter beans were the star. We will definitely return on our next visit to NOLA. I just hope the BBQ shrimp plate is back on the menu. read more

There are always interesting characters holding court at the bar. Great gumbo and fried seafood. I've always thought of this place as a good place for a cold beer and a solid burger or po boy, and yes it's good at that. However this place runs specials and other menu items that you would not expect from a small neighborhood bar. The quality of the food and the specials in particular as punching way above their weight. For example the shrimp bisque was perhaps the best I'd ever had and my grilled shrimp salad was as good as anything I'd had for double the price at a fancier place. Oh, yes, you still get a great frosted mug of beer here too along with excellent service. Wanted to revisit this place as I hadn't been in a couple of years. Always went to Parkway (more convenient) or Castnet (best shrimp poboy) but knew this place was up their on my list of poboys. The shrimp poboy was really good, but I feel like I get more shrimp at Castnet or Parkway. The breathtaking beef is excellent. We got the gravy on the side and that helped keep the sandwich intact (I loathe roast beef sandwiches breaking apart), and also allowed us to appreciate the crunch of the bread. After an 8 hour drive on a Monday from Texas, I decided to walk around by my friends place (who lives by the Fairgrounds) for a spot to get dinner and hang out at while I waited for him to get back from his activities. He'd always mentioned going to Luizza's but I'd never had the chance to go myself, even though I lived in NOLA for a bit and frequently come back to visit and check on my place and friends. This was a homerun and the best way to start my week in New Orleans. I was going to go for the famous spicy po-boy (horseraddish) but after the bartender's reaction to my asking "how hot is it" and getting a "you'll feel it deep in your nostrils" response, I knew that kick would be one I was not ready to handle, so I went with the fully dressed beef po-boy and could not have been happier with the outcome. It was just me, so I became friends with the other fellow who was a long time local hanging there at the bar -- we hit it off (as you will with most folks in NOLA which is the magic of the city) and had a great conversation while I enjoyed this delicious and insanely affordable meal (another great thing about NOLA) If you're up by the Fairgrounds and want a top tier staple place that gives true New Orleans vibes, at a great price, and tastes amazing, you've found it. read more

I grabbed a seat at the bar and the bartender was amazing. She picked up that it was my first time and gave me a quick tour of the menu with some solid recommendations. I went with the hot sausage po' boy and a cup of gumbo. The po' boy left a little to be desired for me personally, but I'll admit I might just not be a po' boy kind of guy. The gumbo was pretty good though! The real winner? That ICE COLD beer. If you're into po' boys, I think this place might be for you. But most of the patrons are local. I see some of the same folks each time I go. Located near the Fairgrounds on Lopez, parking can be a challenge. Pick your times to find a spot. No matter. The food and service are consistently good, and the BBQ shrimp PoBoy is a must-have before you depart Planet Earth. The bar boasts 10 seats (or thereabouts). There are a couple of 2-seat high tops and 4 (or is it 5) tables. So not a huge place. Part of what adds to the experience. They turn off the music when Jeopardy comes on. Liuzza's was recommended by a bike tour person as a great local place. I didn't make it on that particular trip, but kept it on my radar. The next time, a few months later, I spent a few hours in City Park, then made the easy walk to Liuzza's from there. This was a very good decision. We had a bit of a wait, but it wasn't bad. The place was packed and bustling. As busy as they were, they really have things down. The drinks and food came out pretty quick. We enjoyed martinis and cold beers while we waited. That garlic shrimp po-boy, with shrimp spilling out all over the place, was just fantastic. Not fried like other places, and not overpowering. Just and excellent sandwich. Gumbo: This is a thinner version with a lighter roux than many places, not something I would typically consider. It was excellent, full of flavor, and is on my list for next time. Our server was also super friendly and the food came out super quick! We got the gumbo and crawfish etouffe to start, and split the bbq shrimp poboy and the garlic oyster poboy. The gumbo and crawfish etoufee were both so flavorful and delicious, with hearty ingredients and seasoned perfectly. This place had been on my list forever and I always see people post it everywhere. I came in on a Tuesday night so it was pretty chill. So I sat down quickly and the food came out in a good amount of time. The two servers I had were real cool and gave great suggestions. The place itself is a neighborhood staple it's a cool dive bar! The food was amazing we got the: BBQ Shrimp Poboy- I see why everyone raves about it. It's so good and it's the best thing I had. It's tangy, a little sweet, and the shrimp are cooked perfect. Gumbo- Was nicely flavored and well balanced the seasoning to spice ratio was Spot on! Crawfish Etoufee- This is one of my favorite foods of all time so I'm very critical about it. They did not disappoint very flavorful and rich. You get a hint of spice on the backend of every bite. Caesar Salad- This was the biggest surprise it was excellent! I like to come here at least once every couple of months and get my favorite po-boy well at least one of them and that's the garlic fried oyster po-boy fully dressed. When you walk in I recommend sitting at the bar. Theres Easy excess to the drinks good conversation while you're waiting on your meal that's being freshly prepared in the kitchen. Depending on when you go it could be crowded or not but when you're walking through the door you either wait to be seated or you just sit at the bar if there's a seat available. The service is good. Typical New Orleans friendly treatment and they have a good menu. I've had the gumbo also and it's pretty good too. I can't comment on arrest the menu because I haven't had it. I kind of stick to what I know but one day I'll try some other stuff but I recommend them when you do. Go get the garlic oyster po-boy. read more

Make sure to stay close by the restaurant though, as the staff don't take down your number and instead just go outside and call your name when you're up. Our wait was ~20-30 minutes. Overall, the prices are reasonable for the portions and quality, and the service is friendly, attentive, and accommodating. Note there's a 2% surcharge on cards. Food I tried: - Oyster Seafood Plate (3.9/5): Didn't love this dish-- the fried oysters weren't great and only masked the taste of the natural oyster. The coleslaw was really delicious and flavorful though, and the fries were crispy. - BBQ Shrimp Po Boy (4.5/5): This po boy is unique, nothing that I've had before. It's not a traditional po boy sandwich but instead a hollowed out piece of bread soaked in a soupy sauce and covered with a bunch of sautéed shrimp. I felt that the sauce and shrimp were overly salty, but delicious nonetheless and perfectly tender. The bread was heavenly when soaked in the soup. - Crawfish Etouffe (4.6/5): This was one of my favorite dishes-- it was delicious with deep, robust, and balanced flavor. - Shrimp Po Boy (4.5/5): This one was more of a traditional po boy and was also really good. The bread was perfectly light and flakey. The fried shrimp provided a crisp crunch on the outside with a tender, juicy inside. Great spot in a nice neighborhood! Very much a neighborhood bar vibe, but has great above average food! I tried out the BBQ poboy (to give flavor perspective it tasted similar to a Salisbury steak sauce- the best way I can describe it! Very unique!) my husband had the gumbo and soft shell poboy and both were delicious, fries are perfect. Staff was super friendly especially to our two year old who was the only kid there! Wow! What a comfortable, neighborhood place. I had the oyster garlic poboy that comes with a big cup of etouffee. The poboy is on garlic toast sandwich bread with fresh and fried oysters. So clean tasting with the subtle oyster flavor. The etouffee is a rue-based creamy stew with light and lightly squishy crawfish. The heat spice is light. I really enjoyed this thick soup, pleased with every bite of tender crawfish. I also was glad to have some RC cola (in the fountain).
