I've shopped here a few times since arriving in the Bay Area, and have always been able to get answers to my questions, if not fully satisfactory ones. Being a store with a holistic philosophy, they only carry select brands, and those they do are often expensive. Not more expensive than they should be, mind you. I have gotten some attitude from some of the employees there sometimes, and I don't know whether if it's because of something I do or if I happen upon them when they're busy, or that they think my question is stupid, but I don't always feel really welcome there, which is a shame, hence the four instead of five stars. I think I would probably spend more money and time here if it felt more welcoming and friendly. I'm sure there are others who feel that, That being said, I like that they bring in outside veterinary providers for service traditional vets don't offer. Yesterday I had my dog's teeth cleaned for $160, and the technicians and vet performing the service were kind and knowledgeable. I was hesitant but hopeful about anesthesia-free teeth cleaning. My dog is only 8 pounds and otherwise healthy, so I would really rather not have her put under for a routine teeth cleaning. Not to mention the $600-$900 (!) price I was quoted at area vet clinics. My baby has clean teeth and showed no signs of stress or anxiety. So that's a win in my book. I will be back for that service, and maybe will try some of their other products/services when I'm there. Hopefully as we become more frequent sights at the store we might feel more welcome. read more

This shop was so cute and there was a sweet little dog in there just hanging out. They had a great variety of natural dog treats which I love getting for my pup so I was excited to see this. I left with a lamb ear, a kneecap (not sure from what, a cow maybe?), tripe twist, and some biscuit type treats. My dog is a strong chewer and demolished the lamb ear in about 10 minutes. Didn't look at much else besides the treats, but they have food, medicine, accessories like leashes, beds etc. Based on the prices and availability of food, leashes, beds etc, I'd stick to just treats at this shop. You can get the other stuff practically anywhere for a better price. But I like to step it up when it comes to specialty food and treats. This is your place. The staff was okay. One lady approached me and asked if I needed help deciding on treats which was great. The other two just kind of stood around and talked--they weren't rude or anything, but definitely not approachable or friendly. When I'm in the area, I'll definitely stop by for treats. read more

This is a great store with an owner who really knows her stuff and will take time to figure out what your pup needs. We got a doggie jacket that has reflective piping, water resistant exterior and fleece-lined interior. Whoa, like $90! Luckily this was paid for by the boyfriend's mama, who recommended this place to us. Hello, I don't even pay that much for my own outerwear. On to flea prevention: we got some awesome, totally natural non-chemical flea powder for Dango's bed, and some essential oil flea repellent "Natural Defense" to put on his back. The owner told us what else was available, but didn't push any of it on us. Very respectful. (An truthfully, once your pet is healthy, they need less extra stuff anyway.) What's best is that these flea treatments really work and they are not full of poison. Also, they sell raw food! I prepare Dango's raw food myself, but if I couldn't, I know I could find something safe and healthy here. The only thing preventing me from giving a full five star rating is that the prices are really high. I understand that specialty holistic products/stores are generally in a separate league than chain pet stores. But then I found Natural Defense at Pet Club in Emeryville for less! So, a combination of boutique-only items and common outlet finds will do it for me. read more

Excellent customer service, knowledgeable staff, a good selection of holistic care products, and even the ambiance is nice. It's no wonder this shop is so busy! If they can't answer your question, they'll call a vet who will (within reason, of course. When you really need a vet, you should just go to a vet). This is my go-to place when I want an alternative to the routine drugs most vets prescribe. Parking can sometimes be a pinch, but the walk around Walnut Square or a visit to Peet's is usually worth it. read more

This classy (yet alternative) little pet shop is an excellent shopping destination for your fur babies. Whilst we were there for 45 minutes about 7 dogs and their owners came in to visit and pick up their groceries for the week. I found it to have a nice balance of organic and designer. This store has wisely selected quality products for day-to-day doggie living- healthy wet/ dry food, funky patterned collars, huge selection of healthy treats, no-chemical dog wash and naturopathic remedies for common dog ailments. No need to sort through mountains of plastic, imported junk to get to the good stuff. Products in this store are often locally made in Berkeley/ California and are selected for either their nutritional, aesthetic or functional purpose. I particularly liked the fact that many of the toys were made with natural fibres like leather or vegetable dyed ropes. The best analogy I can think of is describing it like a 'designer whole-food store for pets'. I also liked the fact that the two young ladies that worked there were cool and relaxed. read more

Super good selection of raw foods and unique dog chews (my dog is obsessed with the deer feet from New Zealand, definitely didn't even know those were a thing before I came here!) When I need something for my puppies I always shop Holistic Hound first. Their store has the besy quality toys, leashes, and food I have seen in a single store, ever. Better quality may mean a little higher price, but you get what you pay for here. They have a great selection of raw food and kibble. When the health problems started with my dogs in the fall of 2007, before we went raw, I needed very specific dry food. It could not contain chicken anywhere in the food, and needed to be under 17-18 percent fat. That is really hard find, and Heidi helped me look through every bag of food they had in the place to see what options were even available with those very specific needs. We found a few foods that worked and for a while that helped tremendously. Later last summer my Great Dane started having some very difficult to treat and diagnose stomach issues. His vet and I did lots of test to try to find out why he had diarohhea for six weeks and was losing a lot of weight. He ended up having SIBO. Its a small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. He was supposed to be on antibiotics for six weeks. To make a long story short the vet ended up saying he will be on them for the rest of his life. I do not want my dog on antibiotics for the rest of his life. So we came to see Heidi for her homeopathy service in May of 2008. Our first visit was a little over an hour long talking about the limited history I had with Killian since he was a rescue and everything I have observed since I got him. We tried several different remedies and supplements and he was taken off antibiotics in July, I think. In late summer/early fall we had one six week span where his stomach was acting up again, but she was EXTREMELY patient, understanding, and supportive to me and my dog. We ended up getting him through that time without any antibiotics and since then he has been doing amazing. He is maintaining weight over 120 pounds when before we came to see Heidi he was somewhere between 113-118. He also has gained 4 inches of chest girth, has an amazing coat, great improvement in energy level, and overall is much more even tempered. He looks and feels great now. I can't say enough good things about Holistic Hound. I have been in the store at least 25 times, and for the six weeks that Killian was having his issues I called the store almost everyday and have never had a bad experience here. read more

When my husband and I first moved to Berkeley, we went to Holistic Hound for the first time to see what they had. The gal who helped us was very knowledgeable about canine nutrition and she was very personable. They offer so many high-quality dog foods and treats. I really like their large supply of raw bones, which are excellent for dog's teeth. They have the best dog "cookie" bar, with so many options from bully sticks to pigs ears. I also really appreciate that they are a locally-owned store with a lot of American-made products! When I bring dogs I am walking into the store for fun, the dogs always get a warm welcome and a nice treat :) Another great thing is that if you are not sure about what kind of dog food you want, they have free samples for you to take to try out with your pup before buying a large bag. read more

OK, I'm not rich... feeding fido can clean my clock if don't shop wisely; BUT poisoning fido with crap food and treats can happen too if I don't shop wisely. I stand by my comment that this store is primarily a fido-botique.... but I must admit that the goal here is shared with my goal: to not poison fido with crap food. If you shop elsewhere you will NOT find someone that PLEADS with you to simply 'read the label', particularly the first three items on the food label. Great store, definitely worth the drive to Berkeley!!! The products are excellent and the staff is extremely knowledgeable and friendly. I like the fact that the staff makes recommendations, but don't push you to buy their products. I'm a believer in organic and truly natural products for my pooch. They've recommended an organic salmon oil to add to my dog's meals and its amazingly cleared up his dry skin and hot spots in a matter of a few weeks. read more

We have used the CBD oil on both our cats that had cancer. The oil seemed to help with the pain and anxiety of treatment. We have been loyal customers. We bought a new batch and tried to administer it twice to our cat. Both times it caused her to do bitter drool then projectile vomit. We called immediately to let them know maybe they had a bad batch. We were told first that we would not be able to return it and no refund. Then owner called to let us know we could have a different CBD amount at a discount. Again no refund. She said different medicinal plants may cause a "different" taste. This seems dissembling as well as not taking responsibility for her product. We should be able to feel the person selling us these products cares. We do not. We will not be back. read more

I've had dogs for all of my life and have never found a better dog food and supply store than the Holistic Hound in Berkeley, CA. All of the food is certifiably natural, and all of the store's employees are FRIENDLY and KNOWLEDGABLE; how often do you find that any more any where? One time on a Sunday evening I got to the store 10 minutes after 6:00 pm (closing time) to pick up a bottle of Bach's "Out of Control" I had ordered for my overly energetic pit butl Gus. The owner was still inside helping another desperate customer, who had come in for dog food, so she let me in as well. Now come on! How often do store owners do that for you anymore? Almost never is when. They allow leashed dogs within the store. My dogs love all of the food and treats I buy them, and all of the sales people can actually answer questions--Now Come On--that in itself is reason enough to go to the store. Any where else you go these days try asking one of the sales people a question and see what happens--try this especially at either Best Buy or at Home Depot. I swear to God your answer will be "I dunno" b/c these stores mainstream the retarded that's why. You can be standing right next to the printer cartridge that you want-they can be in full view, and you can ask a Best Buy employee where the cartridges are, and the Best Buy employee will look at you like you're some kind of sea monster and say "I dunno" and then lumber off mindlessly to no where. But I digress. The Holistic Hound is a store that makes shopping a pleasure again; like it used to be; you know, back in the day when the products were high in quality, reasonably priced, and the people who worked in the stores knew what they were talking about. The staff seem to be knowledgable and patiently answered all my questions about my new pup! I walked in not knowing what i wanted specifically, but the staff listened to my problems and gave me solutions. I also got a bunch of food samples to feed my pup! My favorite part of the store is their selection of treats. As soon as you walk in, youre greeted with staff and you see the large variety of treats. We never go anywhere else for our pet supplies. This is what a small neighborhood business should be. Heidi knows her business. She is incredibly knowledgeable about the product lines she carries. Her selection of goods is exceptional. And I trust that she chooses the best quality, organic, sustainable, local goods as much as possible. Heidi knows her customers. She knows us and our dog. She has worked with us to smooth out digestive problems by helping us find the right dog food and sort out itching issues by selecting a seasonal supplement. And I've seen her with other customers doing the same ... It may be pricier that buying dog food in bulk from a chain store. But I'd rather spend a little extra money to support a small local business that truly has my dog's best interest at heart. It's worth every penny. read more

WOW on every level! I went into Holistic Hound for the first time today to re-up on dog food for my Mom's pooch while she was out of town. Her dog is a super sweet but skittish rescue pup, and even after knowing me well for YEARS he is tense, shy, and anxious around me especially when we are alone. After lots of patience (and treats) he's warmed to me but remained very anxious outside the house. I kept some faith tho and brought him along with me thinking that he might like to pick out a new toy (he's only recently started to play again after my Mom rescued him 7 years ago!!) I am so glad I did. The second I walked into the door, a friendly staffer greeted us both. My pup was shaking and panting he was so scared and I felt so guilty I just wanted to grab the food and get back to the car where I knew he'd feel better. As I was checking out, the staffer asked me a few insightful questions about his anxiety and suggested CBD. I admit that I appeared skeptical. Partly because I wanted to get my poor pup in the car but also because....weed products for dogs? Come on. I'm from Berkeley and this was a bridge too far even for me. Possibly sensing this, another staffer gave me a little bag with a few of Holistic Hounds signature heart-shaped CBD dog treats made from lamb liver. That was cool, and I left satisfied that at least I got some freebies. Long story short I was so incredibly wrong about what CBD has to offer anxious dogs. We got home and I offered my pup a treat - which he loved - and I waited, expecting nothing. What happened next was nothing short of miraculous. It isn't just that he was noticeably chill yet still energetic, and totally himself - it was what he STOPPED doing that blew my mind. Gone was the fear of me, to the point where we were able to cuddle on my bed (if previously placed there he would immediately jump off and then hide under my Mom's bed). Gone was the hyper-alert nervousness which made him go through the house in a vigilant pattern of protecting us and himself. Gone was constantly furrowed brow gazing into space at things I couldn't see. Gone was the knee-jerk barking that would happen when there was noise outside the home. He literally opened up and relaxed within 2 hours, and that was over 8 hours ago with no sign of stopping! I was so happy for him to have a break from his anxiety, I almost cried. The best part is we were able to bond in ways that were impossible before. We made prolonged, soft eye contact while I petted him with his whole body relaxed as opposed to darting eyes and flinching, which would happen previously even if he was inviting the pets. I was even able to give him a luxurious bath and blow out which - again - was not possible before because he would run from me and the sound of the blow dryer would send him under the bed. He's currently at the FOOT of my bed, hanging out like it's been his spot all along. I can't express my gratitude enough to Holistic Hound and their staff for the work they do and for providing this literal new beginning to dogs like mine, so I hope this post does it for me. I am a total CBD treatment for dogs convert, esp for the beautiful rescue puppers who might need some extra support, and I will be back very soon for a full bag of those treats. I really dont understand why this store has received so much hype, other than the fact that it has no competition in the East Bay. I am an avid shopper and fan of natural, organic, shi-shi foods and toys to pamper my pup, so I've studied lots of the local bay area stores that cater to these themes. That being said, this store was a major disappointment in every aspect - products, service, price. It is super small, has a very limited selection of foods, treats, toys, and leashes that are natural, organic, upscale, etc. They are more expensive than other stores that carry the same brands in San Francisco, and their customer service was awful. My bf and I came w/ our mellow pup to the store on a lazy sunday, when no other shoppers were in the store, and it wasnt close to closing time, yet the two females behind the counter were borderline rude, acted as if we were bothering them by entering the store, and one began following us around the store as if we were teenagers looking to steal something. If you're looking to feed your pup quality natural/organic foods and treats, I'd recommend going to Southpaw in SF or Sunset Pet Supply in SF. Southpaw has more of the shi-shi upscale foods and toys, whereas Sunset Pet Supply has super low prices and they carry natural foods and treats for dogs. Both stores offer consistently excellent service. read more

We have received such great customer service from everyone at Holistic Hound in Berkeley, especially from the Sales Manager, Dianne. Our 9 yr old Cavalier Spaniel was having serious digestive problems, after many expensive tests and visits to her Vet, her problems pointed to a change in dog food. Dianne is very knowledgeable and very patient and she helped us find the best food for our dog who is finally doing very well and back to herself. All xmas items were 40% off! Prices were a bit higher in general. Totally in love with this place. Went for the first time a few days ago and I really enjoy how knowledgeable the staff are. My Yorkie has severe skin allergies and I was looking for something to help that and his anxiety. The staff turned me on to the CBD Hemp Oil drops and CBD treats. I then ventured into the food area. i've stopped in this place previously for their adorable collar selection & the fact that they carry Merrick brand pet foods, but as far as the holistic part goes, i didn't think i needed it. my beloved Pixel has always had a wee bit of a car sickness issue, & while i narrowed it down to sickness in MY truck mostly, nothing i tried cured it. not fasting her, bringing toys, practicing short rides, nada. so i went to Holistic Hound & asked the knowledgeable owner what she had that might help out. she recommended a flower essence tincture for me to help with my poor pup's anxiety about being in the truck. i've cleaned up enough vomit out of my upholstery to try anything, so i went for it. i gave it 25 minutes before going for a car ride & crossed my fingers---- it worked! i tried rides without it & yup, she pukes. i am pleased to report Pixel does NOT puke at all when given this stuff! & being a dog, i know she's not giving a psychosomatic fakey show. i highly recommend this store, because the woman was SO nice, offered me several price ranges of the product, & mentioned she has tried almost all of the tinctures on her own pet at some point in time. Pearl, her Siberian husky & the store mascot, lies about looking quite nonplussed about her cushy life even when your dog (who is welcome!) is in the store. read more

Sure it's spendy. Sure it's in a neighborhood where parking can be hard to come by. But my dog sure did love this place. Any time we were in the neighborhood, and she always knew, off we'd go to Holistic Hound. Sometimes we were nearby for other reasons when they weren't open but off we'd go and it was hard to explain why we couldn't go inside. But she loved the treats they dole out very generously. This store is so great. I went there after buying a mediocre collar and leash at Petsmart. It is going to be returned. Holistic Hound had so many cute collars - some, as would be expected, were pricey, but there were also some very resonably priced ones. I didn't see a leash to match the collar I wanted so the owner ordered one for me. She was very knowledgeable about all products, including their selection of nutritional supplements. This store is amazing. I have been looking all over the place for Orijen puppy food all over the area. This was the only place around my area that carried this brand. They carry a lot of food that are organic and well made products. Price is right. I mean what do you expect for organic food, they don't sell isam.
