oh me oh my! i love the hound! Heidi and the Elizabeth's are so helpful and informative! The HH has more variety and higher quality merchandise than any place i have found here in Boulder (not to mention the store itself is just really good looking). The lovely Pearl is the most aloof shop dog I have encountered, her beauty and her good taste are really what set the Holistic Hound apart from the other boutique-ish bay area pet stores. I am proud to say that she trained my sweet little duck to only appreciate such finery as ostrich tendons and green tripe, as far as duck is concerned everything else might as well be turnips. 5 stars to the Holistic Hound, we miss you something awful! read more

Heidi and Holistic Hound probably saved my cat's life. I adopted him from a county shelter as a stray around 5 years old. He was probably feral for part of his life. He is a total trash cat and will eat anything he can get his paws on. This may be why he had started developing bladder crystals and likely some kind of stomach ulcer by the time I adopted him (neither of which I knew about till he was home). He was diagnozed with crystals after he showed signs of difficulty urinating and his vet doomed him to eat Science Diet for the rest of his life. Thing was, the Science Diet caused him to throw up often- it clearly did not agree with him- and about once every few weeks he would vomit blood literally all over the house. Scary amounts of blood. Like The Shining amounts of blood. $1200 of diagnostic work later, the vet had no clue what it was and was out of ideas. The vet had the gall to suggest, after I showed her a picture of a giant blood puddle, to suggest that "maybe he ate a bug". Excuse me? My cat is indoor only and what the hell kind of bug causes tsunamis of internal bleeding?? No. I called Heidi in a panic and she gently talked me through my options and suggested a raw food diet. She even asked about his personality (seriously, who does that??) She is an artist of pet care. A few days after going on the raw diet (locally sourced RAWR, which I highly recommend, BTW), and now, six months after his last episode, we have seen no more blood and drastically reduced puking episodes, maybe once every 2 weeks he eats too fast, pukes his food back up and is then fine. He has also had no recurrence of bladder issues, despite the vet (who I fired, by the way) insisting he was not allowed to eat anything other than their special crappy dry food. I suspect that his raw diet will continue to improve and prolong what would otherwise have been a difficult life for both of us. I can't tell you how exhausting it is to scoop up piles of bloody vomit day after day. And feeding the raw diet is so easy- you can buy it in handy pint sizes and store in the freezer till you're ready to thaw and feed. And big old Boo loves it. And I have to say it is easier to love him fully when he isn't puking blood all over my bedspread every few weeks. I urge anyone who is having trouble with their pet's diet (or crappy vet) go to see Heidi and ask her for advice. She is truly incredible. Thank you, Heidi and Holistic Hound. :-))) read more

I live in the City and have two persians, that, much as I hate to admit it, come with their fair share of pedigree (inbred?) issues. I have an amazing vet at Pets Unlimited, and get the best advice when it comes to the Western way of providing care. Whenever my guys (Funk and Wagnall) have an issue, though, I also always make the trek to Berkeley to talk to the Holistic Hound about my holistic options. I really want to love this store, it has all the qualities of a great pet store guaranteed to not poison your pets. They are right in line with my needs in terms of better quality products and a commitment to educating pet owners about better dietary choices for their furry loved ones. It would be nice if they updated their website to better reflect what is in house, answered the phones more regularly, and had staff that was better trained in their products. That would definitely up the star factor and at this price point I would expect those things to be a little smoother. read more

It seems like everyday a new doggie "boutique" pops up, stuffed to the gills with the usual suspects of dogggie toys, treats, food, books, and well....crap! Many even claim to have a holistic bend. But there is only one Holistic Hound. Heidi and her staff make sure of that. From her knowledge of holistic remedies, foods, and practices, to her warm slightly bent southern charm....she's a hard act to follow. Yes this place is a little expensive - what you'd expect when you're smack dab in the middle of Berkeley's gourmet ghetto AND you're carrying top of the line healthy stuff (ALWAYS more expensive than Friskies!) - but it's not THAT much more expensive than anywhere else for the same products, AND as far as customer service goes, Heidi and most of her staff are beyond compare. Just yesterday I was in there with a very specific need for my ailing pooch, and a helpful staff person actually called Heidi ON HER VACATION, and guess what, she called back in 10 minutes with an answer. I love this store. I decided to write this review after seeing a couple of negative ones. I have had nothing but positive experiences at this store, both in person and when ordering over the phone. I needed shampoo for my dog that tends to be allergic and was directed to the perfect product that I've used for years now. Since I live in another county, I usually re-order by phone and it gets delivered promptly. Heidi Hill has always been attentive and helpful. I receive emails whenever there are product recalls - its great to know someone is looking out for the well being of my 'best friend'. I also love the neighborhood. Not a big fan but they have some stuff that can not be bought anywhere else. Prices are high. staff is stand offish. My dog always gets discriminated when I've gone in just on it's looks and gender only, by staff and patrons. Bought some stuff there and dog had a bad-reaction and tried to talk to staff and was told there was nothing they could or would do just wanted me to spend more money on possible remedies and I did at my vets. This place is great. I've been shopping here for years and have always enjoyed it. Recently, my 11 year old dog became sensitive to kibble. Heidi helped to fine-tune his diet, which didn't involve selling me anything from her store. I really appreciate how genuinely concerned she was with my dog's health and her recommendations worked like a charm. Within a couple of days we noticed improvement and he's still doing well after being on the diet for a couple of weeks. I highly recommend Heidi and her team at Holistic Hound. It's the only place we trust when buying food and other supplies. Staff is knowledgeable and helpful. They don't push products on you: for example when we were looking for natural flea and tick remedies they gave us samples and suggested we try a few first to see which worked better for both our pup and our daily routines. Same was true when we were looking for a new kibble. They only had a supplement in a very large size and happily checked for us and got in a smaller size. It isn't the only pet store we frequent but it's our standard go to store. read more

There's a great selection of treats, chews and high quality dog food. They carry an assortment of tough toys for dogs that like to rip stuff up. I just purchased a product online called "Parvaid" for my puppy after hearing what a wonderful product it was for all sorts of doggie illnesses, including vomiting and diarrhea. This place is fantastic! Heidi (owner) is a certified homeopath herself and very knowledgeable of holistic pet care. On top of that, her dog "pearl" is gorgeous and if you catch her asleep in her kennel, you will laugh out loud. she sleeps as if she is practicing savasana .... it is worth going there just to witness this :-) They have good energy and welcoming vibe.
