Review Visit: March 11th, 2014 The place where I learned that I don't like Hellman's Mayonnaise. Mayonnaise seems to be such a controversial condiment. It has its fair share of lovers and it has its fair share of haters. There seems to be no middle ground. Personally, I like it when it can compliment a meal but too little and it does nothing and too much floods out the other flavors. Head West was suggested to me when I was first putting together my travel list in 2011 by my friend Annalyn. She said it was the best place to get subs in Springfield. I took her word on that and decided to check it out on one of my first trips to the city of Abraham Lincoln. I wasn't sure what to expect from Head West. The name and logo gave me a few different expectations but I don't think what it is and what I expected aligned very well. The restaurant was heavy on the greens and purples from what I remember. Like something you would see in New Orleans. Seeing as this was forever ago, I don't really remember what I got but I do remember the fatal mistake I made. When I unrolled my sub sandwich and I was presented with some mayo packets, I added them to my sub to the level I thought was appropriate. I was naive. I was young. I didn't know better. It took a few bites for me to realize that I don't like Hellman's Mayo. Not one bit. Sadly, I did too good of a job when I added it as it was evenly spread across the whole sandwich. Bite after bite, I tried to tell my brain that it was good. It was delicious. It was not the worst thing I had. But in the end, I had to admit it was nasty. The sub itself was really good and the Jones Soda washed everything down rather well. This was my first time having a Jones Soda and that was far from disappointing. After choking down the sub, we made our exit. I have forever cursed that mayonnaise for ruining my sub on that day. On the bright side, I would be willing to go back and try a sub again. As I said prior, the sub itself was great. It was just marred by that awful goop called a condiment. read more

Quality of subs have declined. No portioning for meats so are really skimpy, 2 pieces of cheese and minimal veggies on a $9 sub seems steep. Haven't been here in 2 years and I remember why now. read more

Great hearty sandwiches! You can get any type of sandwich and they don't skimp on the meat! great service and totally worth the stop!

Good pastrami and bread. Service is nonchalant about you ordering in a timely manner, but will remake a sandwich for you if even you screwed up your own order. Pretty good over all. Could get five stars with better customer and delivery service, but I don't think they mind four stars on the sandwich alone. read more

Be careful if ordering delivery. Of the last 5 times I have ordered delivery at least one sandwich was incorrect on 3 ocassions. Calling back to get it corrected is meant with angst and a terrible attitude. Once, after having delivery, I took the sandwiches back to be corrected only for them to be wrong again. This store is horrible with getting correct orders and delivery times less than 45 minutes. It's too expensive to be getting incorrectly prepared sandwiches. read more

Great local sandwich shop, this place slays subway hands down. I've been to a couple locations when in the area and can say they make great sandwiches. fresh bread and veggies loaded with meat and cheeses served with a smile. Dining rooms have a hippy vibe decorated with authentic posters and concert memorabilia from several jam bands I'm for sure feeling this spot and will continue to patronize when passing through. read more

We just had 7 adults eat at this "sub shop" the service was the worst I've ever had. The employees were very rude and appeared not to care if we were there on not. Totally unexpected . Not what have had before. Unfortunately five of the seven were from out of town and it was their first time . AND LAST!! we had told them what a great sub shop this was. Not again will I return. I absolutely love the meals I get from Head West, but the service is definitely sub par. If you make any special requests you will receive an eye roll and a huff as they reluctantly carry out your request. It really does make for a lousy experience. Ill drive all the way over to the other side of town for a Head West sandwich from now on. read more
