Head West Sub Stop - Meatball sub

    Head West Sub Stop

    (22 reviews)

Review Visit: March 11th, 2014…read more The place where I learned that I don't like Hellman's Mayonnaise. Mayonnaise seems to be such a controversial condiment. It has its fair share of lovers and it has its fair share of haters. There seems to be no middle ground. Personally, I like it when it can compliment a meal but too little and it does nothing and too much floods out the other flavors. Head West was suggested to me when I was first putting together my travel list in 2011 by my friend Annalyn. She said it was the best place to get subs in Springfield. I took her word on that and decided to check it out on one of my first trips to the city of Abraham Lincoln. I wasn't sure what to expect from Head West. The name and logo gave me a few different expectations but I don't think what it is and what I expected aligned very well. The restaurant was heavy on the greens and purples from what I remember. Like something you would see in New Orleans. Seeing as this was forever ago, I don't really remember what I got but I do remember the fatal mistake I made. When I unrolled my sub sandwich and I was presented with some mayo packets, I added them to my sub to the level I thought was appropriate. I was naive. I was young. I didn't know better. It took a few bites for me to realize that I don't like Hellman's Mayo. Not one bit. Sadly, I did too good of a job when I added it as it was evenly spread across the whole sandwich. Bite after bite, I tried to tell my brain that it was good. It was delicious. It was not the worst thing I had. But in the end, I had to admit it was nasty. The sub itself was really good and the Jones Soda washed everything down rather well. This was my first time having a Jones Soda and that was far from disappointing. After choking down the sub, we made our exit. I have forever cursed that mayonnaise for ruining my sub on that day. On the bright side, I would be willing to go back and try a sub again. As I said prior, the sub itself was great. It was just marred by that awful goop called a condiment.

Well-made, well-sized $10 sandwiches and good service. We got the turkey and provolone and the…read moremeatball sub and both got the job done well.

Stopped into Monty's on a work trip for lunch. Nice little sub shop with a soup / salad / sandwich…read moremenu. I got the Italiano on wheat. The bread is on the softer side and not very crackly. I got mine cold. The biggest positive for me was that the cold cuts and veggies tasted really fresh. It blows subway away in this regard. And, a personal preference, they have cherry Pepsi on the soda fountain. However, fountain soda refills are 0.50, which is kind of odd. They had fresh baked brownies and rice crispy treats for sale on the counter too tgat looked really tempting. Prices were a bit higher than chains. My meal of the sandwich, chips and large drink with one refill was $10.50. The only bad thing I felt was the first booth I sat at was very sticky. I came at lunch rush, so it may not have been cleaned off, but still not good. The booth behind it was fine. So, a good lunch stop for a good bite to avoid the chains.

I placed my order, and my sandwich was already made. When a family came in after me, there seemed to be some confusion and my order was grouped with theirs. Before I could clarify, my sandwich was put in the oven, even though I hadn't requested it toasted. I spoke up to let you know, and while you did remove it, it was then set aside while the rest of their order was completed. At that point, all that was needed was to wrap my sandwich and allow me to pay, but instead I ended up waiting longer than expected. I understand that things can get busy, and mix-ups happen. I just think a little more attention to order flow would go a long way. And while the jokes are usually appreciated, maybe save "what can I mess up for you today?" for a moment when things are running a bit smoother. I'm sharing this because I do enjoy coming in, and I hope the experience next time reflects that. Thank you for your time

She even made a point to walk around and check on each table, making sure everything was perfect--that kind of attention really stood out. I ordered the Thai pork bowl, and it was absolutely packed with flavor--perfectly balanced with a little heat, a touch of sweetness, juicy pork, and a satisfying crunch from the coleslaw. The sauces tied everything together beautifully. My wife got the chicken ranch sandwich and couldn't stop raving about it. I took a bite myself and was seriously impressed. The chicken was incredibly juicy and flavorful, the bread was outstanding, and the candied bacon took it over the top--truly next-level. This sandwich was done right. To finish things off, we tried the oatmeal cream pie cookie, and it did not disappoint. It was soft, perfectly baked, and full of rich flavor. I even had to grab a side of that candied bacon to go--it was that good. We'll definitely be back.

Get the bread - you won't need it (the bowl is huge), but they make it and grill it and it is delicious. Get a cookie to have later (I ate mine over the course of 3 days). I recommend the chocolate peanut butter. The service is friendly and efficient. Ambience is okay. It's busy and the seating is a bit uncomfortable and tight, but they did maximize the utility of the space.
