I have been a client of Manal's for nearly fifteen years and have followed her through three different locations. Lincoln Square, to Skokie, and now to the current location. You may then think I am recommending Manal Studio without being able to make a comparison. Not so. I live in the city on the near north side and work in the Loop. Over the many years, I have made numerous attempts to use other high end salons or traditional men's barber shops. This includes expensive salons in the Loop, Gold Coast, and Lincoln Park, as well as and hipster joints out in Wicker Park. And here I am, with Manal Studio. The basis for my recommendation is Manal's exceptional skill and client handling. Her personal level of excellence then carries over to the full staff and location. Manal has built a great business. For the haircut, I'm a man with a thick hair and at least three cowlicks. My preferred cut has changed over the years: from very short to longer and more full, yet still professional. She always leaves me looking and feeling great and manages my unruly cowlicks well. She's willing to talk through her approach, adjust the cut, and take and implement feed back. I think this last point is what I have appreciated most. The ability to share feedback. I have found that it can be difficult to express with the person cutting my hair a difference of opinion - that I wished something had been done differently. But not with Manal. She's open to hearing how I think the cut is going during that visit, or has grown in since my last visit. She's easy to talk to. And she's friendly. Also, she works with me to talk about what products will work well with my hair, but I never feel like she's over selling me. Lastly, the studio is comfortable environment and the staff is great. I absolutely found that here at Manal Studio. I appreciate that they have an online booking system so you're not confined to business hours to work on your plans for the week. The system also sends out text reminders which are always helpful. Upon arrival (free street parking on side streets, by the way), you're greeted with nothing but good vibes. It smells lovely, everyone in there is kind and happy to see you, and there's soft music playing. Ahhh, an oasis. Muna took care of my color and Manal handled my cut. It was really comforting to have the owner with 25+ years of experience cutting my hair. Picking a new salon is anxiety-inducing! Both ladies are so lovely and did a wonderful job on my hair. Manal did a consultation with me ahead of time to better understand my hair color and cut preferences and worked her magic to help me leave with the desired results. She has taken zero accountability or action to resolve this. Even though she fried my hair, she will not refund as she says "a service was provided." Romelia is the most unprofessional person I have ever worked with and should not be allowed to be in business. Romelia disappeared and left me in the chair for over an hour with bleach on my hair while she did laundry/other things. My hair is absolutely fried, I had bleach spots that did not blend, the hair all around my face completely broke off, which will take YEARS to grow back and I was charged for a bayalage, even though she only did a partial highlight. And the worst part is that I reached out to her in an extremely kind manner to resolve this multiple times and she has taken zero accountability for her mistakes. In fact, she read my message I wrote in tears and chose not to respond for 4 days (although she had time to continue posting on instagram) which is extremely unprofessional. I went into the salon with inspiration photos but also seeking Romelia's advice because I told her I wanted to go blonde but my most important goal was to maintain the integrity of my hair. She told me she could do what I asked without a problem or damage. I left with yellow hair, bleach spots throughout and my hair looked like a skunk in a ponytail by how streaky she left it. It was not blended at all and within 2 days, all the hair around my face began breaking off. I messaged her with photos and she asked me to come back in to fix it. I asked her if we could do a root melt to blend my base color into the highlights and tone my hair to fix the brassy blonde. She told me the only two toners in the industry that were available were warm and ash. I know that color is a wide spectrum and that this was not true. I told her I didn't want to be grey and that is exactly how she toned my hair anyways. At the end, I told her I no longer felt blonde and wasn't sure I would get used to it. She told me that she would not charge me and then asked if I wanted a few waves in my hair, I told her yes if she had time and then she proceeded to charge me $50 styling for waves that took her 2 mins and fell out within an hour. A true professional can admit their wrongs and also admit when they don't know how to fix their mistakes (therefore referring you to someone else). I left with grey hair, more bleach spots and my hair falling out into even further chunks. I had to get bangs today by another stylist just to try to hide the damage because my hair is 3 inches long in the front and along the sides now. I have huge holes in my hair (that goes down to my mid back) that I will now need extensions to fill in for the next several years while it grows back. Every stylist in the salon that fixed my hair was shocked at the amount of overprocessing and breakage I had. PLEASE learn from my mistake and do not go here if you value your hair/sanity. These people are crooks and have no idea what they're doing!! Photos posted are of the breakage/bleach spots after the first session and continued breakage after the second. For $6 you can get your eye brows threaded or waxed. Now you would think for that price they would do a crappy job--but no sirree--it is great. They also provided other services, like manicure, pedicure, massage, hair cuts/styles and mendhi (which looks awesome!). I should warn that decor & cleanliness of the place are not the best, but I can overlook that for the price. Do not mistake me, it is not a dirty place, just not super shiny & pristine. The ladies who work in the salon know what they are doing & get right to it, they are total no-nonsense. You get in & out of there pretty quickly. Walk-ins are always welcome--so give them a try.
