I lucked out, and walked in during a slow time, and got very chill, thorough care from the lovely young woman doing nails today. They offered me a nice cold soda, and did a wonderful job. Two weeks ago I got a no chip and a pedicure here. The place isn't fancy, and there's only one manicure and pedicure station and less color choices than some other places, but this was one of the best mani-pedis I've had. The girl who did it was very sweet and thorough. And I felt like the foot/hand massage that goes with the mani-pedi was great as well! Tap weeks later, they've barely grown out. My nails grow pretty fast and I only have a slight bit of plain nail showing while my toes look perfect still. The price is really good, parking is metered and fairly easy on Clark or free on the side streets but can be more difficult depending on the time of day. I went at an off time on a Friday. Day 5 since mani-pedi and nails are ragged, peeling, hang nails have formed. It's really too bad to have to write this small business a poor review, the ladies were very nice and kind, the owner gave out refreshments, but the final results are... it is what it is. My mani-pedi took about 2hours. One would think that taking this much time was due to careful precision, but unfortunately it seemed like a lack of expertise. There wasn't any nail polish to remove or cut. Filing was done in all sorts of direction, I kinda knew my nails were going to be torn. Getting those nail beds pushed was sort of painful and a few fingers bled from getting trimmed. If one had to be picky, the paint job was a bit shabby. Yes, some of it is my fault for not speaking up, but I also think I shouldn't have to when this is their primary job. read more

This is honestly my new favorite place to get waxed!! First let me just say that Sonia is so sweet, professional, and very calming. I called yesterday looking for last minute wax places for my trip, and she scheduled me for the next day after I got off work to accommodate my schedule. I got to her shop (which is extremely accessible my public transit) and she immediately got me in the room and started on my session. The wax was not too hot, and she moved quickly so it didn't hurt as bad. She also uses soft wax which is a relief for me because my other wax place used hard wax and I hated every minute of it. So, I got a Brazilian and I thought she was finished after the wax...BUT THEN SHE THREADED my area to make sure she didn't miss any hairs. I've never had that area threaded before so I was nervous and amazed, but since my skin was numb from the waxing, I didn't feel a thing! She did the same thing for my stomach, chest and neck areas. Also, my eyebrows look AMAZING! I never have to worry about looking for a last minute waxing lady again because Sonia has me hooked for life! DO NOT GET YOUR NOSE PIERCING DONE HERE Just noticed someone else complained (photo attached) The lady who performs the nose piercing is untrained. She uses bendable sterling silver. When she brought out bags of different size studs a bag tore and some of the studs fell on the floor rather than throw them away she picked them up and put them in the same bag as the other piercings which was very unsanitary. When she gave me the care instructions after completing the piercing she said if the nose piercing starts sinking into my nose to come back as soon as possible. I called her not even two days later because I was in pain and noticed the nose piercing was sinking into my nose. She said that this has never happened to her customers before yet if that was true why would she warn me of this being a possibility. When I called them to notify her that the piercing was sinking in, that I was in pain, and needed to be seen they proceeded to schedule me like a regular appointment even after I explained to them a second time the situation. They then called me back to push my appointment to a later time knowing that I was in pain. Since I was in pain and couldn't wait until the appointment I showed up early, the lady who did my piercing comes to me and looks at the piercing and still proceeds to make me wait till the appointment time. While I am waiting she complains to her employee that I showed up early and am disrupting her schedule. Rather than be empathetic and apologize she proceeds to put the blame on me saying that I had to have pushed the piercing in. As she removed the piercing she tried to push it out with her fingers. I was in pain so I was wincing and began to tear up. When she noticed this she asked me if I took anything for the pain I said no as I rushed here from work she then said "well if you're in so much pain you should've taken something" not only was she rude, she did not give my full refund. I paid $50 and she said that she was only going to give me $30 back because "I ruined the piercing". I told her it wasn't my fault so she proceeded to give me $40 back but not once did she apologize. I don't think that she handled this in a proper manner or that she owned up to her mistake and I don't believe that this company should be allowed to do piercings without the proper training or sanitation. read more

I've been coming here to get my brows done. The price is reasonable and it's quick, I came in last weekend to get threading and it was good, they only had 1 staff so I had to wait a little bit and it was fine, they did good however I didn't notice until I showered that it got irritated. I wasn't sure if it was because I haven't gotten my brows done in awhile which is why but, it didn't look good right after I noticed it. I'm also not sure maybe it's because the lady did it so fast that it caused to have a little scan on my right eye. Never posted any review before but I am so disappointed I wish I never paid! I could have done a better job doing it myself. The point of going to a salon is to have your nails better taken care of by professionals, to make them look better than how you do at home, but I got an amateur inexperienced one and she clipped my nails too short, cutting my skin on the side of the cuticle and it bled, uneven and so messy with obvious trimmed skin around. The way she applied the nail polish was uneven and goes beyond the nail line. Told her to polish them up, take off the excess at the edges and pointed them to it but it seemed to her that it looked ok. She kept knocking on my toes with her shoes under the mani table while doing the mani multiple times. I wish I hadn't purchase it at groupon and never went! It's so bad I wanna redo it myself. Thank you, Sonia Dua, for taking what was supposed to be a gift of a relaxing evening (after dealing with 3 year old twins and a husband in the hospital, I needed this), and instead making it one of the most frustrating experiences I've had with a business. I received a Groupon as a gift. I'll upload a photo of the voucher so you can see the terms. It said "one choice of spa services". The only restrictions in the fine print were that you had to be a client who hadn't been there in the last 6 months, and there were extra fees for French Tips. Silly me, I assumed this could be used for something on their list of services at the spa. Apparently I was very wrong, as Sonia told me a hundred times last night. Looks like they had a Groupon for a manicure/pedicure combo, but that didn't print out on the gift voucher. I understand her dilemma--there's a printed voucher with her salon's name on it and terms that she didn't really agree to. That's a problem to bring up with Groupon for sure. But I'm not sure how it became my problem. The voucher should have been honored, especially if she ever wanted me to come back as a new client. She tried to call Groupon to have them explain it to me (really???), but they didn't answer. After going back and forth with her quite a bit and her asking me to call the person who gave me the gift to explain it to me (yeah, let me call them and tell them they gave me a crappy gift...I'll get right on that...), I finally gave in and said that I'd agree to just using the value of the voucher towards the other service. Since it clearly states on the voucher "The amount paid will never expire and may be applied toward any goods or services offered by the merchant". Nope, she was not having that either. Sonia stated that she would only get $16 for the voucher, and that wasn't enough. Here's the funny thing--the service I was asking for was cheaper than the manicure/pedicure combo!! So, I'm not sure what kind of pricing system is in place there, but it sure doesn't make sense to me. In the end, she refused to compromise in any way, so I had to head home even more frustrated than when I got there, the opposite of what I had been hoping for. I'd also like to thank you, Sonia (salon owner), for having this long, drawn out conversation in the middle of your salon so everyone there had to listen to us. Sorry for ruining a relaxing evening for you ladies as well! If I had been given an option to go anywhere else, I would have, but I wasn't allowed more than 5 feet from the front door. read more

PROS -No chip mani Groupon Now! deals (check often) -Special $35 mani/pedi Tues-Thurs -Very convenient location, I live in the area -My 1st and 3rd no chip manis lasted me weeks. I mean WEEKS! But the 2nd one chipped in less than a week. I was able to return and have it redone with no problem. -They do free removals for no chip manis (usually a $5 charge) -No problems booking appointments--- well except this one time when the phone was ridiculously static-y. CONS -Staff isn't very hospitable upon entering. There's a brief awkward moment of silence whenever I walk in like they're waiting to see who will approach the customer first. -My manicurist wasn't very helpful even after I told her it was my first time getting a no-chip manicure. I had a hard time picking out a color and she seemed too disinterested to help me out. -They share no-chip supplies. Did not appear very sanitary at all. -One of my visits, I sat there in complete silence with my manicurist. And there was no music playing. Cricket...cricket. Overall they do a decent job, 2 out of the 3 times. I've been told to check out Nail Palette... I shall return for the comparison. P.S. I've been going to Sonia for over a year and seeing Sonia herself. She is WONDERFUL! First off, she will give you perfect eyebrows. After having my eyebrows overwaxed & over-threaded a couple times, I thought they would always have a bald spot, but in two visits worth of proper threading, they looked great (they looked good the first time, but by the 2nd it was as though they never had a problem). She also does my bikini waxes & those are terrific as well. She is very thorough & puts you at ease very readily. I always take an ibuprofen 30 minutes prior to make it a little more comfortable. The prices are very reasonable, especially considering the quality. I've been to a number of salons, from the low end to the very high end ($40 for a bikini wax), and since walking into Sonai Salon I've never gone anywhere else & never will. I had an amazing experience here and am so happy that I found out about this salon through Groupon. I came in for a sandalwood facial, leg wax and underarm wax. Fatima did my waxes and did a great, fast job. Her technique wasn't even painful the way she did it. She asked me a few times if I was doing ok. It was such a thorough job that she threaded the few toe hairs I had that the wax couldn't get! Nisha did my facial and I slipped into heaven for that hour. The infusion of all the sandwalwood and Indian herbs took me right back to India. The massage was an added surprise, and she did it around my neck and both my arms and hands. She had the perfect pressure. The lights were turned off and small tealight candles lighted up the room, which made it very peaceful and calming. It was such a great way to end a stressful week! True, this salon isn't posh or luxurious, but the staff is very kind, they do a great job at great prices, and it is clean. Now I don't have to deal with the drive up to Devon ave! I changed my appointment for another day by calling in advance because it was -30 outside, but the next day I felt bad because my heat broke down at night and it was terribly cold at home and I got sick. I called to reschedule for the next week, but she started to run into me and tell me to come or she would never take me at all, that because of she came to work for couple of appointments, including one of them me. it's not my problem that you come to work because of whom and for what. I work as a receptionist in the salon and never allowed myself to run into a client like that and did not set ultimatums even if clients changed their appointments a million times. It's not professional. I would understand if I just took it and didn't come and didn't even warn. What an attitude towards a client. I'm generally upset that she was rude to me and put an ultimatum! read more

I used to get my eyebrows cleaned up/threaded back home at Indian salons in Los Angeles, where these salons were a plenty (and cheap!!! I'm talking $5-$8 cheap). I once paid $15 for threading at another Chicago salon and almost died. But anyway... I'm happy I stumbled upon this place. The lady who cleaned up my eyebrows was very friendly! Just an update because they have done some renovations lately! After a late winter break of wedding season no chip manis, I am BACK with spring! Just came here for the first time since November and the place is looking good but is a bit crowded with how they reorganized. However, if you read my previous review, you'll know that this isn't the most luxurious spot in town. It remains a solid place to get a reasonably priced mani or pedi. I am happy to report they now have the little nail swatches so you can see what the no chip colors look like without having to open bottles and demo on your nails (only to accidentally wipe it off on your clothes or in your hair). My eyebrow threading experience here was weird and unpleasant. The woman who threaded my eyebrows made them so thin. I told her before hand that I was trying to grow them out. I'm sure she didn't listen to anything I said, she only spoke one or two sentences to me the whole time I was in there. I was/am really irritated that she gave me terrible thin 90s brows. I would not at all recommend having your eyebrows done here. ETA: I asked for a wax, but they determined threading instead...maybe they have a threading quota to meet or something? If you want wax you really need to push for it. read more

I've been going to Sonia for three years for brows. They always do an incredible thread job. I walk in and don't have to explain that I don't want them thin. They clean them up, give them a little shape, but leave them natural and full looking. I've also gone for arm waxing. I trust to recommend this place to friends. Horrible experience! Went to go get a pedicure and within 15 mins I could tell the woman had no experience but it was raining so hard that I just stayed and wish I didn't. Some parts of my toes are a bit swollen from how she did the cuticles and the worst part after she did the nail polish she cleaned off the extra polish with her nail! That made so grossed out I went somewhere else to fix everything they did wrong and clean my feet from her nails you are supposed to wear gloves for a reason. Never again read more

I have been seeing Sonia for my brows for 7 years and she has always made them look BEAUTIFUL! With rents going up in the neighborhood, Sonia moved her location to the storefront next-door to the old salon. In the process of the move, ridged city ordinances prevented her from including nails in the services they can provide in the new storefront. Now there is a nail salon in the old Sonia's, and the new Sonia's is next door. Both salons can survive with our support! Went in because I didn't have time to go to the person I normally go to and I badly needed my eyebrows done. The woman in charge thin them out more than I have ever had it and I'm still in pain and then at the end told me she changed the arch. Who asked you to change anything!
