I am not happy with this company. I feel like I was baited and switched. They came to my house and quoted $450 to plant 2 pecan trees I purchased and had on site and later tried to upcharge it to well over $1000 after he neglected to bring the jackhammer I told him he would need and after he found out I was doctor. Let me clarify this- I told him BEFORE the quote that there was bedrock in my back yard that needed a jackhammer and he said he would bring the right equipment. The guy came back the next day. I had to go to work so I told him to send me pictures. He told me he planted the first tree "shallow" and that was when I found out HE DIDN'T BRING A JACKHAMMER, and just planted my 12 foot tall tree into the rock. I asked him why he would plant it so shallow when he told me they dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. He said it would be 'a little bit more cost' since they also ran into rock in the 2nd hole as well. I was expecting they would try to charge $225 for having to 'replant' the first tree (which would not have been the case if they had the equipment they claimed to have). I had to be at work the next day as well and had them send me pictures since the had the jackhammer now, hours go by and they send me a picture where they dug 3 feet into the rock, instead of trying a different area close by which would have made sense. I attached the picture he sent me- to dig that long in the same spot is INSANE. I told him to leave the jackhammer and I'll dig the hole myself when I get home from work. I dug a narrow deep 'tester' hole 2 & 1/2 feet away and there was great dirt there. I dug the same size hole there myself- plenty of dirt and sparse rocks. It took me 2 hours to dig the hole and jackhammer the bedrock sections out. I found out- after they left- that they broke the strawberry tower in my garden and didn't tell me, they tucked the broken pieces to the side of my raised garden bed. I told them to take the stakes from the older previously planted trees in my yard near the fence and instead they ripped out the ones supporting my garden's drip irrigation system and strawberries. They also cleaned the dirt from their hands or equipment in a tall bucket that I was collecting rain water in for my rain barrel in my garden. I shouldn't have to explain to not do that and they literally had my garden hose right there. Oh! And they compacted a 3 foot radius of dirt on my grass instead of putting the dirt into a wheel barrel or even in the huge nursery plastic pots I had out in the open. I had to go out and scrape the clumps of dirt and rock off of my nice well cared for grass. At one point he said he never had anyone so picky about their trees- I said I'm going by WHAT YOU TOLD ME YOU DO. You said you dig the hole twice the size of the root ball (which they didn't at first) and put in 3 stakes (which they only did 2 at first)! You asked me to provide the soil- why would you expect me to want rocky dirt put back in the hole when I bought enough dirt for both of the trees? Why would you try to put only 2 stakes on a 12 foot tall tree in TEXAS knowing the storms we get here? Were they just cutting corners? This is basic stuff. When he said he would have to charge me "over $1000", I did a double take. This is so unethical. He said he knew he "underquoted" me to begin with. I guess I fell for the old bait and switch. I'm not sure if this common in the tree industry, but don't have them plant trees for you. Maybe they are good at trimming. Next time, I'm just going to do it all myself like I did with my other small trees and rose bushes. What a waste to pay them $900 for me to plant my own tree. This may have been what a professional tree planting company would have charged me- which is fine, I think it is so shady to secure the job with a low quote, then not bring equipment so you can more than double charge for labor to dig for hours 3 feet down into solid rock. Do yourself a favor and just rent a jackhammer and plant your own tree. It's actually not that hard if you use common sense. They appear to do a good job with tree trimming, but after what they did here, I'll be going elsewhere for that. This was so bad it's almost funny. I'm curious if the guys that came to my house are the owners.This was so unreal, and this company has 160 reviews with 5 stars. How? Friendly crew who executed well but the most expensive and slowest tree trimming job in my experience. For a larger job, I would start by getting more quotes but would hire them again. I had a delicate operation, where I needed to clear a tree away from a chimney for repairs. Initially priced $750 but they ended up doing it for $600 if I wanted to get started right away. I went with them because the reviews made them sound competent and they were immediately available. Convinced myself to pay more because of the complexity of the job. Small crew. Took a few hours for the one tree. They used ropes well to catch large branches and my house was left unscathed, which was my main concern. The cuts were clean and the oak tree looks great. These guys recently trimmed my trees, and they did a great job. They cleaned up after themselves. Actually, they cleaned up more than that. I had some dead wood and leaves in my yard, and when they raked up the little branches from the trees, they took all that too! Roland came out to give me an estimate, and they got the work done the same day. Roland and his crew were all polite and pleasant. I have used Hill Country for several years now for anything from tree trimming, to fixing my side garden, to putting up a new fence, to just recently today they fixed the brickwork in the garden beds along my front walkway and planted new bushes and plants after snowmageddon killed everything. This is in regards to the reply given by Hill Country Tree Trimming for the review I left previously. To answer the question about the other bids and why I didn't hire them... I did. As you said, they didn't show up. Which is why I contacted Hill Country Tree Trimming. I didn't bother to show you the other bids because I didn't think it was necessary to get a fair quote. I figured that you would provide a competitive quote without me having to try and negotiate the price right out of the gate. After our experience with Hill Country Tree Trimming, we contacted JW Tree & Land Service. They came out the very next day to give a quote. Once he arrived, I went over all of the things that needed to be done. We agreed on the price and he had his crew come straight over the same day. JW Tree & Land Service removed all of the hackberry trees, plus stumps, trimmed the two large trees in the backyard, and shaped up the large crepe myrtle tree off to the side of the house, trimmed all bushes away from the house, removed some dead holly bushes that were along the front and sides of the property, as well as a live holly bush that was over 10 ft tall from the corner of our home, and removed a large bush that had overgrown the secondary gate off to the other side of our garage. Total price? $950. So not only did they beat the quote given by Hill Country Tree Trimming, they actually did it AND completed a lot more work. Funny how they were able to do it for a fair price without me having to show proof of other company's bids. And while you may feel otherwise, this review is a VERY accurate representation of OUR experience with Hill Country Tree Trimming. Hopefully, that was thorough enough of a review for you. read more

Roland and his crew are phenomenal! I researched 3 service providers, all of whom had good reviews on Yelp, to make sure that I had done my due diligence for such a big job. I needed to have several stumps removed as well as a medium sized pecan tree that had incurred significant damage from a lightning strike, a monster shrub that was overtaking a side of the house, several saplings that were likely the result of birds dropping seeds, trimming back all of the oaks and trimming back the canopy over the roof, and lastly, the removal of lots of holly bushes and overgrowth along the fence line. Easily an all day job in the neighborhood of four figures when all was said and done. My grandma always said that closed mouths don't get fed and let me tell you, Hill Country Tree Trimming definitely prepared for a feast! Left message for the first service provider and didn't get a reply back until 3 days AFTER the job was completed. Second service provider responded back within 2 hours of leaving a message. A very nice receptionist took my info and scheduled an onsite estimate appointment for the next morning. She then called later that afternoon to say that she realized there was a scheduling conflict and asked if I could reschedule for the following morning. I was perfectly okay with this since I was not working with any time constraints per se. The third call was the charm. Roland returned my call within minutes. We scheduled the onsite visit for the next morning. He and a partner arrived 30 minutes early. We walked my property, he made recommendations in addition to the items on my list, and thoroughly answered all of my questions. I let him know that I still had 2 more estimates to get through and would let him know my decision within a few days. I had a rough idea of where the costs would likely end up for the scope of work I needed done. That said, Roland made an offer I couldn't refuse - if he could get started today, he'd get his crew to the house within 20 minutes, complete the entire job the same day and give a me a small discount if I would say yes. Best impulse buy I've ever made! It looked like it was going to rain all morning and I was worried for their safety, but Roland assured me that they could manage. And they did more than manage. Fortunately, no rain, and they delivered as promised. My yard looks wonderful and has me ready to start planting for spring! As promised in my last review I used Hill Country Tree Trimming again. I called Roland and had him come out to tame my tree-filled yard again this year. I needed 4 trees removed - 3 small ones and one HUGE one (30 inches across the trunk and probably 70 feet high). They removed these trees, trimmed all the others away from the roof, raised the canopy, and did health and maintenance care for every tree on my lot. They left the yard in much better shape than they found it, including collecting all the fallen leaves and general cleanup, and the whole job - for almost 50 trees including the 4 removals - was done between 9am and 3:30 pm. They returned three days later and knocked out the project in just over an hour. This four-man crew was great. They hauled away all of the brush and did a great job cleaning up after work was finished. They also gave me some tips on landscaping around the trees. My wife was working in the yard when Roland and his crew drove up. They were awaiting the late arrival of a client nearby to gain access to property and had time available. They asked if we needed any work on our trees so she called me to talk about having HCTT perform some removals we'd discussed previously. I was suspicious at first. After she researched online viewing ratings and other user-generated content she and I agreed to employ Roland's team to attack 4 undesirable & ugly nuisance trees in our yard. Within a couple of hours they were down, processed and hauled away at a reasonable cost that was much less than expected. The team worked hard to dig around the base of each tree to cut the stumps as low as possible so that additional stump removal wouldn't be necessary.
