My irrigation system needed maintenance, repairs and an extension for an area that suffered without irrigation during the summer heat. I had two firms make paid inspections and provide estimates. Santiago was by far the better one and I am glad I chose him. The other company appeared competent but the inspector missed items that needed repair or adjustment that Santiago found, and that inspector was unaware (as I was) that my property had an already installed, unused zone with a valve that Santiago discovered and used for the extension. This was significant. Santiago is professional. He came out very soon after I left a request on his website, and the work was done the same week. Although I chose not to upgrade to a smart, WiFi controller until I can correct a WiFi issue in the garage, Santiago is familiar with the technology, which is very appealing. After a bathroom remodel, my concerns were correct. We were not getting much pressure out of the tap. The plumber who worked with us to complete our remodel, tested the pressure and we were at 40PSI... pretty low. Unfortunately, after a few months, he just couldn't fit us in his schedule. We just lived with it, like we had for several years now. Enter Santiago. After our sprinkler not working fiasco, it was time to revisit the sprinkler system. I felt that we may actually need a new system. I reached out to him two days before Snovid hit Austin, requesting an inspection of our system and do you happen to handle PRV replacements. My past plumber let me know it needed to be replaced and quoted $975 as an estimate. Santiago responded promptly, seems to be his MO, that yes he can replace my PRV and do an inspection of our system. He would reach out to my spouse to arrange everything. The snow arrived, electricity and water departed and I felt that I again will be waiting forever to have this completed. I jokingly emailed him during the Snovid week and let him know he must be swamped, but we still wanted to get on his schedule when possible. As soon as the ice had departed and water came back on, Santiago called Suzie and we were set up to have a visit yesterday. He arrived on time and took a look at the problem and to check out our sprinkler system. He let me know he could install and replace the PRV, plus some piping which needed to be fixed. $1250. Yeah, so a little higher than my other plumber. However, he and his crewman would fix it now. Austin is a wash in broken pipes and issues due to Snovid. I agreed immediately. His crewmate AND Santiago got busy. A pretty impressive hole was dug out, piping replaced, PRV installed and after a couple of hours, we were good to go. Now comes the ethical part. After the PRV fix, they went about investigating the system. I let him know I was interested in replacing the entire set up if needed. My thought process... it's over 15 yrs old, time for an upgrade. Well, not so fast big bucks.. Santiago let me know that there was actually only a couple of sprinkler heads that needed to be replaced and aligned. I didn't need a new system. Wow. Srsly? A buck 50 to fix the sprinklers and I'm good to go? Even the controller was fine. He couldn't do that job now, he had another job on the schedule. I requested that he replace the controller, Suzie is all about wifi'ing the house up. He did mention it wasn't needed, but he certainly would install a new one per my request. He'll be back soon enough to complete this task. He also does Tree Triming.. We will have him take care of that for us now moving forward as well. His company and he are a gem. On his day off on a Saturday, Santiago came out within a few minutes to help me turn off my stuck irrigation system valve. We had a slow leak one of the main irrigation pipes in our backyard. He said he'd be back Monday to fix the leak. His crew arrived right on time and was done in about an hour. I called Santiago because I thought I had a leak in a sprinkler pipe. He was accommodating and came out to take a look at the problem. He came out and dug where the problem was and in the end, it turned out it wasn't a leak, but the way the water was coming off the roof (4 downspouts!) and channeling into the trench (sprinkler line) that was causing the water to pool up with the recent rains. He explained some workarounds with diverting the water away from that area from the downspouts, detailed why it wasn't a sprinkler problem and replaced the sod. Wanting to charge $85 to tell me what I already know (that the controller has to be replaced) is just another way to try to lock in business with a sunk cost. It is an old plumber's scam. If there were real value in the $85 service, that would be one thing, but $85 to tell me what I know if wrong and not being able to give a line item charge for services is a relic of pricing from years gone by. Our water bill was higher this year than any previous year and we suspected a leak. I made a Yelp request for help to irrigation companies. This time of year most companies are swamped so it didn't surprise me that several companies didn't respond. Of those that did, bids were all over the place from trip charges to package deals. I recalled Garden Experts coming to my house several years ago and submitted the same inquiry to Santiago. He quickly responded and we coordinated a time for him to come out. He and his crew came out and quickly found several problems with the controller configuration, multiple leaks, but also several heads and rotors that needed replacement or adjustment. Considering the irrigation hadn't been inspected in over a decade this wasn't a shock. The cost of the repair work was fair and within 2 hours our irrigation system is back up and running correctly. If you're looking for a competent irrigation company that is fairly priced and delivers than look no further than Garden Experts. Also remember that you might be eligible for a water bill adjustment for fixing a leak for City of Austin water customers. But then tells me that it will be $75 for him to come out and look and give an estimate on the job which will be more. I had an issue with my sprinkler system, where heads were coming on when they weren't supposed to. Santiago and his crew came out and looked at the problem and told me my main valve and safety valve needed replaced, as the valves were open when they should be closed. After replacing the valves, we ran a system check on all zones. One head and stem needed to be replaced.
