Im looking to get some drainage directed in a way that flooding does not occur. I sit on an HOA board so getting this done, im assisting in a position to assist a resident within our small community. So, Ive been calling to make appointments to price out what this will cost. Every company I have talked to has been well represented by whomever answers the phone. A very rough voice, kinda what you would here if you didnt want to answer the phone, answers the phone. Its a woman on the other end. I can hear in her voice that she has probably had a tough day. However, Im a potential new client... I ask to make an appointment to get a quote. "Since you're an HOA, we charge a consultation fee. Thats how we handle it.". I say "Well then, I am not interested." and hang up the phone. Let me give you some advice... If you have a potential new client on the phone and the first thing you start with is fee this or fee that... You are not going to get that client. You have no idea the work we want done here or the amount of projects you could have received. In your line of work, if you're good at what you do or charge the amount that is consistent with going rates, you wouldn't need to charge HOAs consultation fees. If I was random Joe Shmow, I wouldn't have been charged is what that tells me. So instead of coming out to show your work or what you could have done to gain more work, you were a bit rude and started with fees. You just lost some business. read more

Over the past two years, we've dealt with dozens of contractors: some good, some horrible. Suffice it to say, we know a great contractor when we see one--ADLD is high on that list. We were fortunate to closely work with Kyle, one of the owners. He is exactly what you hope for: someone who listens closely to the client, creatively solves problems, takes ownership of issues when they do arise, and bends over backwards to make things right. We had many reservations about our yard's unique drainage requirements (traditional landscape companies didn't seem to be capable of addressing when an entire yard slopes), and so ADLD became the logical choice given their drainage expertise, and they executed a design we gave them. Our only advice would be to ensure if landscape design, not just drainage, is involved, request an english-speaking crew member as sometimes the finer details can be lost in translation. I want to give serious kudos to Kyle, Megan, and the entire ADLD team for a "job well done"! I live in Northwest Austin where my house is the lowest point on the street, and I have had multiple drainage issues, and most recently, had water enter the front of our house each time we had a heavy downpour. While I had done some minor stuff with a handyman, I realized that it was time for me to bring in a professional. I reached out to 3 companies including Austin Drainage and Landscape Development (ADLD). Kyles showed up at my house and talked about what he would recommend, and I immediately felt comfortable that he knew what he was talking about. He recommended that we add a French drain and an area drain, and that we tied into the gutter downspouts and routed them all to our backyard which has a good slope. I received a quote from his office before the committed date. I was able to get my questions about the quote answered in a timely manner, and the project got scheduled for execution sooner than promised. The crew that did the work knew what they were doing, were polite, and took care to avoid damaging our bushes/grass. All throughout the project, I always felt informed and in good hands. Kyle stopped by for a final walkthrough today and things look good. I strongly endorse ADLD for any drainage work. It's October 31st, after +8 inches of heavy rain and our house is dry. I have to say we are extremely happy with the work Austin Drainage did for us. In the past, We had several very close calls and decided we had better get a professional to help. Austin drainage is really the only company in the Austin area that does water remediation as their primary business and they are good at it. We used all their suggestions and are very pleased (swale, drains, gutters). Everything they installed worked exactly as planned. If we had not had this work down, I'm certain we would have had water in our house. When we first called them it was after the Memorial Day flooding and they had a huge backlog of work. We had to wait ~6 weeks for an appointment. Dale kept us informed, started earlier than promised, left a very clean worksite and came in under budget. During the work, one of our sprinkler controls was accidentally cut, he fixed that promptly also. If you are concerned about water drainage damaging your property, I highly recommend these guys. read more

I hired Austin Drainage & Landscape to resolve two drainage issues on my property -- pooling on side of house, and on my back patio. For the side, they installed an underground drain (custom built concrete drain box on side of house, into a 4" PVC pipe, terminating through a hole bored in the curb), and cut a swale in the backyard to divert water from the patio. The good: The actual crew who did the work did a great job. They were polite and very neat (all dirt removed during trenching/digging was placed on plastic sheets on the lawn, and it was a good thing, because we had a major rain storm in the middle of the project, and this prevented a muddy mess on the lawn). They paid attention to detail. The final result looked great. Several neighbors commented how good the yard looked, like it hadn't been touched, despite the tremendous amount of digging that had occurred. The not so good. I almost pulled the plug on these guys due to various missteps on the pre-sales / pre-work side of things: * Initial project manager assigned to my job was, in my opinion, incompetent. His initial plan completely failed to address my #1 drainage problem. Not impressed. * The initial project manager ordered a survey (which normally cost hundreds of dollars, which is credited back to the cost of the project) without my consent. I did not order the survey because at that point in the process I was still weighing bids from different drainage contractors. * Lead time was several weeks to a couple of months, I understand that. However, the actual start date was far off the expected start date that was communicated to me. I understand delays happen, but I would have appreciated some proactive communication from them to me about it. I found out about the delays only through calling the office myself, as I was coordinating the start of an irrigation system install with a separate contractor following completion of ADLD's work. Despite these issues, I wanted to give ADLD a chance, because my experience getting estimates from other drainage contractors wasn't much better, and ADLD has a better reputation. So I called ADLD, patiently explained my issues, and to their credit, they assigned a new project manager who came up with a new plan I was happy with, acknowledged their mistake on ordering the survey, and waived the cost of the survey. So, in summary, I would probably hire these guys again because the quality of their work is top-notch, and because they were genuinely concerned about the issues I raised, and made a good faith effort to resolve them. However, if you hire them, plan to stay on top of things to make sure you're getting exactly what you want. And be prepared to wait if you hire them during the busy season. read more

Poor execution, slow at returning calls Austin Drainage & Landscape (ADL) was hired to remediate water runoff on my property. Part of this effort was to dig a long trench in my yard. Shortly thereafter, I commented that the trench did not appear to be designed properly since water would overflow spill over to the walkway. ADL assured me it would work as designed. A few days later, it rained and I was able to capture it on video, which I shared with these guys. Unfortunately this trench was poorly executed and completely ineffective. ADL also extended a retaining wall; unfortunately it was installed at an angle (again, poor execution). Previously I paid for a site survey and expected all measurements to be executed properly. I had the new retaining wall removed (which I did at my expense). ADL installed additional retaining walls which were OK. In addition, payments requested were made before agreement upon milestones were completed. Also, there were times when these guys were slow at returning calls and difficult to reach (which is very frustrating). Toward end of job, I was offered ~1/2 pallet of sod without charge, however, when they laid it down over dried, hard dirt, I knew it would not grow and requested they prepare the soil before installing the sod, which did not happen. After a short amount of time, all of the grass they left dried up which resulted in additional work to remove all of the sod. ADL performed this work in 2016. These guys charged a premium price and did not give any discount for a large project. Paying more to hire somebody does not translate into a better outcome. read more

After having a complex landscaping job completed in our yard by another landscaping company that went wrong we turned to ADL for help. Our yard was facing water retention issues that we were concerned would effect our foundation, and was washing away our flower beds. We contacted ADL and immediately had a date set up for a consultation and proper survey of our yard. We were then given a very detailed comprehensive plan on how the yard would be remedied. Workers were kind, efficient, knowledgeable and did a wonderful job with our property. When we still had issues in a few areas after a rain with completion they came out and adjusted some of the work to make it right. So thankful that we could get our yard back in shape. My existing gutter set up did not really make sense and was starting to create some valleys in my yard, so I wanted a better drainage system installed. I chose this company because I couldn't really find any others that seemed to focus specifically on drainage on Yelp. They came out and gave an estimate pretty quickly. But then it was difficult to get responses via email or phone when I wanted to make changes to the project or discuss the scope. It turned into long-term phone tag for a couple months. Then Harvey happened and I decided to just accept the original estimate and scope rather than waiting any longer than I already had. They notified me they we starting the project at 5pm the night before which did not make me happy because I had to notify my neighbor about some work involving his property. They came and started the work the next morning. The "project manager" Dale who was not there called me shortly after they began. He notified me that they were concerned about having to jackhammer bedrock, and if they had to do that, it would cost $125/hr on top of the estimate. I was furious because I live in Northwest Hills which obviously has a ton of bedrock to deal with for projects like this (and some was even visible above ground in the area where the work was being done). We talked about there likely being bedrock to deal with when he came out for the estimate and he never mentioned the possibility of any extra charge. I ran outside to see how much work had already been done and they had already dug a trench around my whole yard before mentioning this. They already had a 15% deposit from me, which I now understood was to give me no choice about accepting the upcharge. I had to either agree and allow them to continue - or lose at least 15% and end up with my yard torn up. When I asked repeatedly why this extra fee wasn't mentioned, I was referred to the fine print of the contract I signed (which you can see in the photo attached). Indeed it is mentioned in the fine print on the otherwise blank second page. Very well played, you may have a future with a fine organization like Time Warner. After complaining extensively to the project manager and office manager, I had gotten nowhere. I had to let them finish the project. They said they would try to limit the hours of jackhammering expense. I was told the project manager would check in with me throughout the day, but I never heard from him again. When I went to check on the project towards the end of the day and make sure some poison ivy removal included in the quote had been done, they were gone. I had never heard another word from anyone, I just received a request for the payment balance at the end of the day by phone. I checked out the work and they had not put up gutters or a downspout in one area where they were supposed to, the poison ivy had not been removed, a condensation line had not been connected to the drainage system, and the ground had not been adequately filled in where the previous issues were. All of these things were included in the estimate. I would think if there were a project manager, I would not be billed the balance until the work was done, but no one seemed to know it wasn't done, so they just billed me. I work from home, so I would also expect the chance to review the work when it was done rather than having to schedule a special appointment to do this afterwards. A few days later they came out and reviewed the work that hadn't been completed and finished the project - and of course were harassing me for payment again (without reviewing the work with me) before the end of the day. There charged me every penny for the 3 hours of additional jack-hammering charges, + $375. It was a really bad experience all around. read more

After some initial miscommunication, we had a very good experience with ADLD. They were able to get to our job and finish in less than a week of signing the contract. Poor communication for potential new customers. I called and spoke to Megan and she told me to go ahead and email photos to determine if they can assist with my drainage issues. It is going on 3 weeks and no return emails or phone calls. No response. If you call their business, 99% of the time you get a voice mail message and nobody returns calls. Very disappointed. I guess they don't have an interest in procuring new customers. I attempted follow up with 2 phone calls, and even submitted an online inquiry. No word back. If a business can't even earn my respect by returning messages, then I will look elsewhere. read more

Dale and his crew did a great job on our french drain system. Water no longer pools up on our patio threatening the threshold of the door. The swale works as expected, and has already probably saved our home from flooding due to the increased rains. We did have a few minor issues post construct, but they were quick to remedy. I would definitely recommend ADLD. My only advice is to improve communication skills within the company, and to your customers. As far as price, they may be a little above average, but probably worth it. read more

The salesman we worked with was knowledgeable and helpful, but follow up experience was not as good. The installation process began with no notice or outlining flower beds prior to starting construction. It was painful and fraught with poor quality workmanship. Many of our plants are dead from fungus. We contacted the company about this almost immediately after installation but did not get a response. We do give them credit for recognizing the quality of the masonry was poor and redoing some of it. read more

I'll basically echo what other reviewers have said, they do very good work and the yard definitely looks better than it did previously. We hired them for grading since the water ran towards the house, and part of the project (now we're into landscaping) also involved replacing a sidewalk with limestone pavers with steel edging. There were a few hiccups along the process, so I would try and supervise the guys. The main objective was to route water from the house and that works well, and we like the sidewalk and the overall price was reasonable so I'll give them 4 stars. Would have preferred the job to happen quicker as it took quite a while for work to commence, and to their credit that was communicated, that would be my only gripe. read more

I live in NW hills (much rock) and have a very steep uphill in my backyard bringing water to my house and a very steep downhill in my front yard taking water down the street to the sewers. Having read some mixed reviews, I called the company. They took a little long to come out and a little too long and unresponsive on the initial quote, but it was around the time of Harvey and I knew they were very busy. Neighbors up the hill from us overbuilt their lot and aimed some drainage toward our property which otherwise would possibly have gone elsewhere. Dale Jennings came out and walked the property and discussed our situation. After we received a quote, I had other questions and he came out again to explain. He did explain the jackhammer issue at $125/hour and we did hit rock a couple if times for a total of about 7 hours of rock drilling. Additionally, I did change the scope a couple of times AND added drilling up a heavily rebar filled patio and hauling away the pieces. The more I worked with Dale, the better I felt about his knowledge and honesty. Once the project started, it was flawlessly scheduled. Trucks, equipment, personnel, rock haulers and grass all showed up at exactly the right times to keep productivity going. The crews were respectful and honored our schedule and neighborhood disruption requirements, as well as they kept us informed when they saw a problem, change or need. Although Dale was not present for most of the work, he was aware of everything happening at all times and seemed to review the status at times on the property when we were unaware he had even been on-site. They finished this project on time and given the "scope creep" I added, they were on budget with the only variable being the solid rock unknowns. They were careful of existing shrubs, features and the placement of new drains. In all, ADLD put a swale around 50% of the house, added a number of drains, multiple 4" pipes to carry water to destinations. Additionally, they piped downspouts from the roof to destinations we previously agreed to. Finally, when they replaced the grass on the newly lowered swale areas with the drains, it looked great. My only regret is having to write this very positive report on Dale, the crews and ADLD without any gully washer rainstorms in the last month to what how it works. It rained a small amount and worked perfectly for that. I also have the assurances from Dale that if something doesn't work in the big rain as expected, he will make certain it's right. I believe he's right and the system as built should now handle any water flow that happens. I am entirely satisfied and happy with the work and the guidance and project management that Dale provided. I would certainly recommend their work as it was performed at my house. read more

We had an absolutely wonderful experience with this company. We needed someone to propose and execute a drainage plan for our house after it had been leveled. We consulted with several companies, but selected this one because, before they developed their proposal, they came out and assessed and measured the fall and general terrain of the lot. The proposal that they produced was based on the data they had obtained. The initial proposal was pricey, but they were then very helpful and flexible in coming up with alternatives for us that could lower the price. They explained all of the various components of the plan, including what each piece did, and why it was or was not essential. When we settled on a plan, they provided us with a very detailed contract that included warranties and timelines and set out exactly what we could expect. Ultimately they did absolutely everything they promised and even finished early. In addition, they were immediately responsive to all of our various questions and possible concerns as the the work proceeded. They also proposed and installed a truly beautiful back-yard patio as the finishing touch. Cory and Antoni deserve a special shout-out for making this the great experience it ultimately was. When we get a heavy rain the water would run straight to my house and although it never got high enough to enter my house we were always very concerned. The estimator had some great ideas on how to divert the water around the house. The prices were reasonable, the employees were professional. We are very pleased with the job they did. It took us 3 months to finalize on an agency to do some landscape work in our backyard. We wanted a stone patio done, stone borders along our flower beds, flagstone steps leading up to a section of the backyard and new sod (grass) in a section of our backyard. We got quotations from 4 different providers and finally selected ADLD and we are happy we did. They kept us updated on our project start date, had a preliminary walk through before we started and a final walkthrough after the project was completed to ensure we were satisfied. Their folks would promptly show up at 8am and work through the day till 4 or 5pm. Everyday they would ensure that the place was tidied up before they left. They completed the project 3 days ahead of schedule and we were extremely happy with the results. Kyle, the project manager, was great to work with and kept us updated all along the way. Their office staff is awesome as well, keeping us updated on phone and email. We have been referred by several friends and co-workers to Austin Drainage who were very happy with their work. I have tried several times to schedule an estimate, and twice the technician has either not shown up, or cancelled the appointment the day of. After the first no-show, I rescheduled (it took more than 3 weeks to even get an appointment), and called to confirm 2 days prior. I was told yes, absolutely, the technician would be at my home at the appointed time. An hour and 15 minutes before the appointment the scheduler called to cancel. I now have a third appointment on the books, but the customer service I've experience thus far needs a lot of work. read more

I would like to lead by stating that if this review was of our ADLD project manager, Dale, it would be a resounding 5 stars. Dale was not only knowledgeable and a good communicator, but he was understanding and patient with us as it took us a while to decide how much of our original drainage plan to execute. I would also give him 5 stars for being professional when I wanted to play Jr. Drainage Expert and talk through the minutia of the actual drainage design. He fielded my nit-picky concerns and addressed them so that my partner and I were 100% satisfied with our final design. The only drawback that keeps this at 4 stars is that we felt there was sometimes a difficult time understanding how ADLD, as a company, was structured and how it operated. Dale often had to pick up our checks and drop off documentation in person because of mailing issues at the office. They also had a hard time remembering to email both my partner and me (though, to their credit, they got down by the end of the project) regarding questions. There sometimes seemed to be a disconnect because we communicated with Dale most of the time but then there were issues where we had to directly communicate with the ADLD office. It got a lil confusing. All that being said, when we are ready to finish the rest of our original drainage plan. We are calling Dale at ADLD. read more

I contacted this owner a number of times. The first time (many years ago) I was unable to afford the work. Then on another occasion, I was told that the company primarily works on commercial property.. However, I was seeing a number of people (from the reviews and dates) that were having work done from them. On another occasion (yes, I believe I've had contact with the company 3 times, but not always the owner). the owner said to me.. 'you can't afford me'... We had a pretty complex drainage issue in our back yard. ADLD came up with a recommendation that they executed better than we could have anticipated. Very reasonably priced for what they had to do. Miller, our Project Manager, stayed in touch throughout the process, his field crew was sensational -- pleasant, informative, and as hard working a bunch of guys as I've ever seen. The bottom line is that the intense rains between July 4th and 9th in South Austin show how effective the plan was -- excellent drainage, and no flooding. We had some serious drainage issues at the back of our residence. Over the years soil had built up around the foundation and several astonishing downpours (6 inches in a very short period) caused water to come into the house. I contacted Austin Drainage + Landscape Development and within a few days Dale Jennings came out to assess our property. He was very knowledgable and came up with a plan that was both functional and beautiful. Although the actual work did not begin for several weeks (they had a huge backlog of jobs because of all the recent flooding) their office kept me posted about when the work would be done. They did a great job removing soil and sculpting the ground, installing a French drain as well as diverting water off the roof and making a lovely dry riverbed that looks so natural with curves and beautiful rock. We engaged Austin Drainage & Landscape after at least the 7th flooding of our downstairs living area. Dale came and looked at our current stormwater management system, determined all the areas of weakness and they wrote a comprehensive plan that would treat every problem we had. They came out a few days ahead of the project start date in order to walk the property and share the plan with the team. The team showed up on time every day, worked as hard as I have ever seen people work, and always had time to answer my questions. The workmanship, the care they took with our property and the follow-up walk through was everything we could have hoped for. Their plan was tested shortly before the project was complete, but was complete enough to see that it was a success. We received torrential rain - the perfect rain that would normally have flooded our living area - when they were still two days from completion. Yet, there was no water penetration into our house or our garage. The peace of mind this project has given us can't be stated strongly enough. This group earned all five of these stars. read more

Last October, when we went under contract for a house we loved in University Hills, the initial inspection report noted some potential flooding issues and recommended that we get an additional inspection looking specifically at drainage. Austin Drainage and Landscape Development seemed to be the best game in town, so we brought them in. They were able to do the inspection and turn the report around quickly, which is important when the clock is ticking on the option period. The report identified some serious drainage and flooding issues, related to the subgrade layout and slopes in the yard, and came back with a $14k estimate. We figured that was worst case scenario, so we went ahead with the home purchase and had a cheaper contractor throw some waterproofing on a subgrade wall, intending to address the drainage issues a couple years down the road. We moved in. And then it started raining. And raining. And raining. Pretty soon, we started noticing damp spots along a subgrade wall in our son's bedroom and the adjoining closet. At first we though the plumbing might be leaky, but we noticed the carpet got wet whenever it rained. Then, after a few big rainstorms, the water would turn our back patio into a raging river and the standing water was getting perilously close to coming in the door. We decided we should probably get serious about fixing the drainage issues sooner rather than later, and called Austin Drainage and Landscape Development out for another estimate. They were a little backed up due to all the rains, but were able to schedule us for the Friday after Memorial Day. Yeah, that Memorial Day. As the city flooded, we had major water intrusion coming in through subgrade walls and forcing up through cracks in the foundation. Our carpet was trashed, drywall was soaked, the whole 9 yards. (Just for kicks, we went back and read the initial inspection report. Damn it, everything that they said would happen did happen. It's like they knew what they were talking about.) We got a second estimate, this time minus some of the waterproofing and slightly scaled back, and it came to four figures rather than five. The guys were great about explaining the planned scope of work, and what each drainage feature would accomplish -- swells as the first line of defense to divert water away from the house, French drains and pipes to move water to the street, additional waterproofing to prevent leaks, gutters terminating in pipes also running to the street, resodding of grass. They let us know from the start that there was a queue for the work and it would be 6 - 8 weeks. They communicated with us several times in that period, letting us know the expected start date. (Unfortunately, there was another crazy rain event in that time period and we flooded again. But hey, at least we hadn't bothered replacing the carpet yet.) Within the estimated timeline, they were able to start work. It took a full crew about a week and a half (and lots of digging in the hot sun!). They did a great job and all of the workers were extremely tidy and polite. After the work was complete, the manager came back out and walked us through, showing us what had been done and why, and how to care for it. He made sure we didn't have any questions, and was very thorough. We really appreciated having that final walkthrough. It wasn't cheap, and we had to wait in line for a few weeks, but we're very glad we went with a company that was so obviously competent and knew what they were doing. With El Nino and heavy rains in the forecast for this fall, it is such a relief to have this work complete and know that our most important investment, our home, is protected. read more

These folks know what they are doing. We had a fairly complicated problem. Kyle correctly diagnosed the problem and designed a solution. Actual work was postponed by me due to other work being done. They were very understanding and when the work could actually begin, were there within a couple of days. The crew were professional, courteous and efficient. The result was exactly as promised and the price was reasonable considering the work that was required. I believe I received value for the time and expense. Once this company has your final payment, the customer is history. Any problems with the job are ignored or repaired in a quick, sloppy way. They had no respect for my landscaping and I had to spend more money with another company to straighten it out. I had to repair some of the problems myself when they wouldn't respond to my calls. read more

Their tag line is "Serving Austin with Integrity since 1984" and unfortunately who they represent themselves to be with that statement and reality do not line up. Integrity doing what you say you are going to do by when you said you would do it. They definitely do not even come close. They gave me an very expensive estimate and then said I would get on their schedule as soon as I gave them 10% down. I sent them a check for $780. then I waited. When I inquired as to when this was going to be done- they said-- you are 21st on the schedule- to which I referenced the 3 week promise- they replied, they would honor that, then the week came-- oops a delay, next week, another delay, etc and then they just stopped pretending and did not call . I called after a month- to which they said something to the effect of delays happen. When I asked for my money back (which they normally don't do- their contract is deposits are non-refundable) they said they would give it to me- but I had to wait till their billing cycle.... amazingly bad customer service.
