Summary Review: Bad service at this location. Special Note: Even the hours posted on their front door are often incorrect. The first 3 times I attempted to eat here, they were closed for one reason or another. Full Monty: After three experiences here, I feel prepared to rate this Hayashi location. Sushi Bar Chefs - 5 stars Sushi - 3 stars Waitstaff/Servers - 2 stars Sushi is acceptable for Lubbock (or any landlocked area), however the service from the waitstaff is abysmal. My server today had so much perfume on, that it permeated the air and I could almost taste it. On my visit 5-27-22 (12:41pm). I asked to sit at the sushi bar. I sat one down from the end (on the right - Bar 1 B). The server took my order and came back promptly with a water and a napkin wrapped fork. Being that I sat at the sushi bar, I would have expected to also be given chopsticks. Side note, I did not use the fork. About 5 min after ordering, I noticed that the sushi chef had just made my order. The chef looked at me and nodded to let me know that it was my order and I had permission to take the 2 plates. BTW, my server was nowhere near. Immediately after getting my food, my server poured my hot sake and proceeded to push it across the large counter....to me. She wanted me to lean across the empty char and lean forward to maximum stretch capacity to get my hot sake? Um excuse me, are you to lazy to bring it to me? The young female server did not want to walk around the bar area to hand me the sake. After getting my sake, she rushed off into the kitchen without asking if I needed anything. 5-7 min later she appeared on the other side of the restaurant and I was able to catch her eye to ask for chopsticks, a napkin and a soy sauce dish. She located those items and...yes she pushed it across the bar again....stretch #2 for me. I typically tip 20-25% for service, on this visit it pained me to leave 15%. read more

I have to give this a 2 star because of the service. I've eaten here so many times over the last few years and the overall average review is this; I can expect decent whatever-I-order... and I can expect a water/waitress that could practically let grass grow beneath their feet. IF I could review the kitchen and sushi chefs differently, I would. But the FOH staff sets the mood. I continue to eat here because their placement is pretty brilliant- it's in a convenient place, close to my work, close to where I live, and on the way to the places i like to spend my time. We had a party of four. We ordered 6 sushi rolls accumulatively- one of which was incorrect when it came out, another was missing entirely. After waiting 45 minutes. Maybe it's something we wouldn't have particularly noticed while reconnecting in conversation over drinks, but we had plans to be elsewhere at a certain time... and we should have had AMPLE time to make the other reservation. One of my friends was going to order another roll during the meal and by the time we got our food and they had misheard her order and brought out the wrong one, well, at that point you just have to leave a little hungry if you want to continue on to our other plans. I ordered a flavored sake, cold, and it came out hot. I was "reassured" that it was "room temp"- but I've had the same hands attached to my body long enough to know that 1. IT WAS WARMER THAN ROOM TEMP and 2, It's not what I asked for- AND it wasn't offered to be remedied when I mentioned it was incorrect, instead I was told it wasn't the temperature I claimed it to be...as if I (and everyone else at the table) was hallucinating. I live in Houston and you would know the night I was in town the Red Raiders were playing the University of Houston out of Town. I graduated from TTU in 2017 and love all Tech sports. I was able to watch the basketball game and have 2 dirty Martini's a Sushi Roll and the Regular Sushi option. All was fresh and on point. I was attending a training session in Lubbock and a high-ranking city official recommended Hayashi as his favorite Asian restaurant in town. Disclaimer: I am a bit of a food snob, so it is really hard to impress me. The food was certainly good, but not mind-blowing. The menu pretty much had the standard selection of rolls, appetizers, and all the other dishes one would expect. I had an Ahi tower and shrimp shumai. I found it odd that the tower was served in a bowl rather than a large plate, which made it difficult to mix up before eating. Also, the shumai were served with a pile of lettuce, which was strange. I'm all for creative presentation, but neither of the above added anything to their respective dishes. It all tasted good though! The area this place shined brightest was the service. They always cook my hibachi steak perfectly and the veggies are well cooked, flavorful while still having some bite to them. The ginger and mustard sauces are a must. And their service is always attentive and kind. I always feel welcome there. I will be a repeat customer and may explore the menu a little more, everything I have had is so good from the hibachi steak to the clear mushroom soup which I could eat a gallon of probably, and the salad which was crisp and flavorful. Plus the to go containers can be washed and reused. So that's always a plus as well. And the portions are great I personally tend to need to take the rest Togo, additionally it heats up well especially if you have a wok and a splash of water at the bottom to help keep the moisture in the rice. Bento Boxes are the best Here. They do still serve Hibachi for those who like it but without the table theatrics but it's still just as delicious. But alas my go to meal is the bento boxes. This place is pretty average; nothing is that good, but nothing is that bad either. The service is fast and the servers are nice, but the plates were dirty. The food was ok but nothing that special. We got the poke and the soft shell crab for our appetizer. The poke was good, it had a nice dressing and it was fresh and light. It doesn't come with rice though, but if you ask for some, they'll give it to you. The soft shell crab was ok. I felt like there was a bit too much breading and the crab felt too heavy when combined with the dipping sauce, a sort of spicy mayo. I would have preferred a sauce with a bit of acidity to cut through the greasiness of the crab. For my entree, I got the Bento Box A which comes with 4 pieces of sashimi (or 6 pieces of sushi), shrimp shumai, fried rice (or steamed rice), salmon teriyaki, and shrimp and vegetable tempura. I did not enjoy the sashimi very much, except for the salmon sashimi. The salmon sashimi was very fatty and rich. The other sashimi were pretty tough and a bit chewy. The shrimp shumai was good. It isn't steamed like regular shumai, it is fried which makes it oily, however, there is a sauce that comes with it with a touch of acidity which helps balance out the oilyness. The fried rice had no flavor but that was ok because it let the flavor of the salmon teriyaki shine. The salmon teriyaki had a really nice flavor but the salmon itself was dry. The shrimp and vegetable tempura was pretty good, it was my favorite part of the bento box. So while I wasn't particularly thrilled about my visit, I thought it was pretty average and I wouldn't be against trying it again. If I were to eat here again, I would probably get a tempura dinner or a bunch of salmon sashimi. read more

The edamame and broccoli that came with the tofu was unseasoned and tasted like tap water. The tofu was slimy and undercooked causing me to gag all while the rice was overcooked. The salmon roll wasn't salmon. Not bad, but clearly not salmon (I've caught enough to know; flesh was grey, not pink/red-orange). Salads were swimming in enough dressing for 3x the greens. Lettuce was fresh and crisp, but drowning. Only one fork for salad and main entree. Disposable bamboo chopsticks. The dinners were a saving grace. Both the hibachi teriyaki beef and hibachi steak plates were very good. Beef was tender and flavorful and veggies were firm but not crunchy. Very good. Might've been a one and done for us but the main plates were good enough to repeat. Update: I discovered the morning after my visit my credit card was missing. I returned to Hayashi Midtown (last place I used the card) 15 minutes prior to them opening for lunch. They let me in and returned my card which they'd secured overnight in their cash register. I love the food at Hayashi, especially their sushi and sashimi. Their Lychee Sake is to die for. For this particular night though, I must say, really am disappointed at the service. Our server was nice but got all our orders wrong. Had to send our ramen back coz it was the wrong one. When it came back, the Miso ramen was bland and did not even fill the bowl. Ordered a tall sake, and got the short one. Normally, a restaurant would give discounts for getting orders wrong and making customers wait. Not this one. Such a shame coz I really like this place. Pricing was great during lunch hour. 3 rolls for ~$13. Got chicken fried rice. While the rolls were not bad, they were edible at best. Chicken fried rice was decent. For context I am the least pickiest person and will eat just about everything. Sweet tea was great. Ambiance was good and place was clean. However, as soon as we finished eating, all 3 of us had our stomachs aching immediately after and had us sprinting to the restroom when we got home. For an appetizer, my friend and I ordered the shrimp shumai (steamed dumplings). Our food came out in 10-12 minutes. Everything was good, but not the best sushi or dumplings I've ever had. These rolls were pretty average compared to some of the other ones I've tried in Lubbock. However, if you do come here, make sure to ask for eel sauce! It's the best thing to dip your sushi into! We ordered the yellowtail jalapeño appetizer and I thought that the yellowtail weren't fresh at all ... the flavor of the ponzu sauce was on point but the fish was of terrible qualify.
