    Hot Sake
    Nickie B.

Summary Review: Bad service at this location. Special Note: Even the hours posted on their front door are often incorrect. The first 3 times I attempted to eat here, they were closed for one reason or another. Full Monty: After three experiences here, I feel prepared to rate this Hayashi location. Sushi Bar Chefs - 5 stars Sushi - 3 stars Waitstaff/Servers - 2 stars Sushi is acceptable for Lubbock (or any landlocked area), however the service from the waitstaff is abysmal. My server today had so much perfume on, that it permeated the air and I could almost taste it. On my visit 5-27-22 (12:41pm). I asked to sit at the sushi bar. I sat one down from the end (on the right - Bar 1 B). The server took my order and came back promptly with a water and a napkin wrapped fork. Being that I sat at the sushi bar, I would have expected to also be given chopsticks. Side note, I did not use the fork. About 5 min after ordering, I noticed that the sushi chef had just made my order. The chef looked at me and nodded to let me know that it was my order and I had permission to take the 2 plates. BTW, my server was nowhere near. Immediately after getting my food, my server poured my hot sake and proceeded to push it across the large counter....to me. She wanted me to lean across the empty char and lean forward to maximum stretch capacity to get my hot sake? Um excuse me, are you to lazy to bring it to me? The young female server did not want to walk around the bar area to hand me the sake. After getting my sake, she rushed off into the kitchen without asking if I needed anything. 5-7 min later she appeared on the other side of the restaurant and I was able to catch her eye to ask for chopsticks, a napkin and a soy sauce dish. She located those items and...yes she pushed it across the bar again....stretch #2 for me. I typically tip 20-25% for service, on this visit it pained me to leave 15%.

I have to give this a 2 star because of the service. I've eaten here so many times over the last few years and the overall average review is this; I can expect decent whatever-I-order... and I can expect a water/waitress that could practically let grass grow beneath their feet. IF I could review the kitchen and sushi chefs differently, I would. But the FOH staff sets the mood. I continue to eat here because their placement is pretty brilliant- it's in a convenient place, close to my work, close to where I live, and on the way to the places i like to spend my time. We had a party of four. We ordered 6 sushi rolls accumulatively- one of which was incorrect when it came out, another was missing entirely. After waiting 45 minutes. Maybe it's something we wouldn't have particularly noticed while reconnecting in conversation over drinks, but we had plans to be elsewhere at a certain time... and we should have had AMPLE time to make the other reservation. One of my friends was going to order another roll during the meal and by the time we got our food and they had misheard her order and brought out the wrong one, well, at that point you just have to leave a little hungry if you want to continue on to our other plans. I ordered a flavored sake, cold, and it came out hot. I was "reassured" that it was "room temp"- but I've had the same hands attached to my body long enough to know that 1. IT WAS WARMER THAN ROOM TEMP and 2, It's not what I asked for- AND it wasn't offered to be remedied when I mentioned it was incorrect, instead I was told it wasn't the temperature I claimed it to be...as if I (and everyone else at the table) was hallucinating. Cool. Thanks. Color me "meh". If you're nearby and wanting sushi, go for it. But don't expect much by way of service.

My son said this place is the best. So of course I had to check it out. . We ordered 2 appetizers beef egg rolls and gyoza. Yum!!! My son ordered the BMW Roll. It was amazing. So many flavors. I had the Jay Roll. Wow, it was delish. If I could eat here once a week I would. I can't wait till my next trip to Lubbock

Ahi Hayashi Tuna Tower in a bowl???
    Anthony B.

I was attending a training session in Lubbock and a high-ranking city official recommended Hayashi as his favorite Asian restaurant in town. Disclaimer: I am a bit of a food snob, so it is really hard to impress me. The food was certainly good, but not mind-blowing. The menu pretty much had the standard selection of rolls, appetizers, and all the other dishes one would expect. I had an Ahi tower and shrimp shumai. I found it odd that the tower was served in a bowl rather than a large plate, which made it difficult to mix up before eating. Also, the shumai were served with a pile of lettuce, which was strange. I'm all for creative presentation, but neither of the above added anything to their respective dishes. It all tasted good though! The area this place shined brightest was the service. I was in and out quickly. My waitress, Carissa, was top notch... friendly and attentive. Not a life-changing experience, but I would not steer anyone away from here. Lubbock is not exactly known as a sushi Mecca, so...

While we had great service and a fun, knowledgable server at the bar - the freshness and flavor was as the rating suggests - Meh. Wanted to like this place - but its a No from me.

Bento Boxes are the best Here. They do still serve Hibachi for those who like it but without the table theatrics but it's still just as delicious. But alas my go to meal is the bento boxes. Sushi selection here is amazing too. All around great food and ambiance. Service is always friendly and they are very attentive.

I eat here almost once a week. Best sushi I've found in Lubbock so far. Close to campus if you're in college. Service is always good and the food is consistently good as well.

While sitting in the Walmart parking lot researching places near where I'm staying for work in Lubbock, I came across The Funky Door Bistro Wine Room. I'm so glad I did. When I pulled up, I appreciated the ample parking and immediately noticed the unique wine‑glass door handles--such a fun touch. Inside, the décor is warm and inviting with wood accents, dim lighting, and a beautiful display of wines. The upstairs seating overlooking the main floor adds to the charm. The service was excellent from start to finish. I ordered a grapefruit mimosa and an egg‑white omelet with avocado, feta, spinach, and breakfast potatoes with caramelized onions and peppers. I was charged extra for egg whites, but it was absolutely worth it. Everything was flavorful and cooked perfectly. From the hostess to the server, the service and timing were spot‑on. It was pretty crowded which is a good sign, and they seated us fast- and the staff was super friendly- Then we ordered coffee. We didn't want alcohol in our coffee (granted they have an impressive drink menu) but we just wanted COFFEE. The coffee was weak, and not hot- and then as each pour came, it clearly got colder. I think the coffee was an afterthought and really irritated us. My daughter had the avocado toast- subpar at best. A trace amount of salmon and minimal avocado - and for $25? disappointing. Don't do an Avocado "mousse" - just do Avocado. My "breakfast platter" was satisfactory and actually reasonable at $15. My wife's French toast was listed as "croissant" ....but was NOT croissant. Maybe we hit it on a bad day. Who knows. But we left underwhelmed . The waiter did remove the coffee from our bill because we had to tell him about the cold temp- much appreciated for that . I'll try for dinner in the future - but not for breakfast/brunch.

I will give major props to the server, Mollie, and her manager for doing a phenomenal job resolving a minor issue with the order quickly, politely, and effectively. The atmosphere was fair with good music and humorous decor in the bathroom. The lights weren't for me, but others may like the statement. Where The Reserve was lacking was the food. The pepperoni pizza was pretty good, but again there are better options around town. It did taste like it had been prepared in a genuine brick oven. The tortellini was bland. The queso was good enough, but nothing to get excited about. The salsa was downright terrible. The chips were actually phenomenal. The margarita made no attempt to cover up the strong taste of tequila. The Chilton tasted like club soda and not much else. Lastly, some of the surprise fees made me feel like I was booking air travel or paying a wireless bill rather than getting a nice meal. The final charge was a few dollars more than what was shown on the ticket. I assumed this was probably due to a service charge for paying with a card, although I didn't see it with a quick glance at the receipt. In all fairness, I'm sure this was disclosed somewhere and I overlooked it. I have come to accept this as the way of the world now. Also, when we ordered the chips and queso, we were asked if we wanted salsa with it. We accepted the salsa with the assumption that it was complimentary. Granted, since we were asked, I should have assumed that there was a charge for it. The charge was reasonable, although wasted because the salsa was so terrible. I did receive approximately a 5% discount for the order mix-up, and I actually ended up with a free pizza as well. The service and attentiveness were truly exemplary. I would give this place a second chance if I were in the area, but I certainly will not go out of my way for it.
