This is the best restaurant around. It's odd that it's connected to a gas station but really is a total sleeper. The food is fresh and local, service is good, and staff is generally friendly. It's a little expensive but worth it. You can't go wrong with any of the appetizers. Lunch is a better deal. read more

My husband and I were in the Liberty Lake area and decided to try Hay J's Bistro because of the great reviews. We arrived at about 3:30 so unbeknownst to us, we were given a lunch menu. We wondered why the menu was not very extensive but we didn't ask. We both ordered the grilled chicken sandwich with marinara sauce on a ciabatta roll and a side of fries. The sandwich was tasty but nothing special. The fries were cut thin and they were good. We both asked for water which was infused with pineapple and berry flavor but we couldn't really taste either one. We may or may not try Hay J's again. read more

Not sure if it truly is three stars but. Went to Hay J's with my wife and two kids for dinner. My braised beef pasta dish was good. My Sons chicken dish was good. My wife's beef Medallions not so much. The meat was very tough and took some time to chew. Her whipped potatoes lack flavor and were not enjoyable. Her vegetables were grossly over cooked. My daughter is gluten intolerant so she ordered the beef tenderloin with a side Caesar salad with out croutons, figuring it would come with the whipped potatoes. It did not, and it didn't come with vegetables. The Caesar salad wasn't a Caesar salad. It was some other salad with at looked like chopped kale with a bland vinaigrette and a gross amount of onions. Cocktails were good but food lacked love. Not sure we will return again. read more

Last night's dinner just wasn't what we are used to from Hay J's. We ordered the Medallions but they were completely drowned in Gorgonzola. Could taste nothing else. We also had a wild mushroom appetizer that was fantastic two tasty desserts and two power house martinis... really too strong. But as much as we bragged to our guests how much we loved this place it just didn't live up to the hype we gave them. Wife had chicken Marsala risotto and she said it was very unremarkable as well. My friend and I came here during Inlander Restaurant week and were happy we did. A few things to know: 1) It's in the same building as a gas station, but not IN the gas station. 2) They own the restaurant next door, which is where they make the breads and desserts. 3) They own the Butcher Block, where they also source their meats. 4) The parking lot is small. My friend and I were able to try their Halibut Cake, Blackened Bleu Tender Tips, and Parmesan Crusted Halibut. The atmosphere was great and our server was attentive. read more

My wife and I had dinner at Hay Js a few nights ago. This and their sister place next door called Piccolo are "go tos" for us. We usually split one of their risottos because they're rich and filling. That paired with their excellent bread appetizer and a good glass of wine made a great dinner. Can't wait until it gets a little warmer so we can sit on their deck. Liked this place so much the first time we purposely stayed in Liberty Lake on a follow up trip just so we could go to Hay J's again. And it was just as good the second time. Fancy dining at a gas station, you say? Yup! And you won't be disappointed! I've been to Hay J's before years ago with my manager and my lead. This time I took a couple of my engineers who are also working in the area. They thought I was joking, clearly the joke was on them! We walked in (early) without reservations, and I think we were lucky to get in. Soon after the restaurant was super busy. So I would recommend making reservations, otherwise you can dine solo in the small bar area. The menu is small, but the dishes they serve are well thought out! Both times I've come through I've had nothing but great food! Recently we ordered the Ahi Poke as an appetizer. I also ordered the soup du jour (I was hungry), which was a white bean soup with pancetta and kale, and absoultely delicious! I'm pretty sure I could have that as my entree, if I requested, it was that good! For my entree, I had the Parmesan crusted Halibut, it was on a bed of basmati rice and topped with a lemon-thyme butter creme. I cleaned that plate! Service was great! I was glad they weren't hovering around and we never felt rushed (we actually stayed there for 3 hours)! If I'm in the Spokane Valley, I'll likely pay a visit here every time! read more

I love Hay J's !!! My husband and I had dinner last night and everything was perfect! I had the seafood Cobb (my favorite) and he had the scallops! My husband does not like his veggies crunchy, prefers very soft, so he always ask for mushy veggies when we go out. Last night was the 1st time the chef got it right!!! We also had the clams, everything was on point! Drinks were delicious! 1st time my husband cleaned his plate in a very long time!!! Waitress was amazing and very friendly! Has earned the new top spot for crusted halibut. It's always been one of my favorite seafood dishes and my bar is set very high. Very flavorful seasoning and crust and top notch fish quality. I've had quite a few dishes off their menu and have never been disappointed. They definitely get busy and fill up quick, so I'd recommend reservations. read more

We called ahead for a party of 8 and were well accommodated! We were immediately sat, and given waters, but after that no one came. It was about 15-20 minutes until one person from our party got up and found us a server. Other than that service the rest of the night was decent, and the food was amazing. When I walked in, the staff was great, as was the vibe. "The table will be a minute but can I get you a beer while you wait?" I ordered the steamed clams appetizer. The clams and broth were off the charts good! The accompanying bread was ok. It would have been great, but they over thought it with all the melted cheese. Regardless, that was the best choice of the evening. For entrees, I got the chicken Marsala Risotto. My wife got the scallops. The risotto was overpowered with spices (especially fennel and salt. The scallops we great but, again too salty. When they bring the entrees, you normally expect the server to come check if there is anything you need. That did not happen. Very nice server but that was a mistake. I have to say, when dinner was over, the follow up service was great and prompt. read more

We have enjoyed HayJay's for many years. It's such a surprise to have good meals at a service station strip mall, but there it is. Sometimes it's a little loud for me. It depends where we are seated. Cocktails are excellent; and the menu is well-varied. The food is usually very good, but I've had two poor meals there in a row. My husband's were fine. What does that say, I wonder. Not sure if I've reviewed before, but man oh man/woman... you've got to try the Cherry Ice Cream and partake in the great wine and Scotch list, off-the-hook! Love these guys. First time, 8 years ago, I was shocked because location was a huge turn off, but once inside, wow! Will continue to frequent. We had a great time here! I came with my husband for a late lunch. The waitress was very sweet and great. She was quick, and always checked on us. Water was never empty! I am pregnant and have been craving a deli meat sandwich (of course I have not had one because of the risks for listeria) but I was happy to find out that they had an Italian grinder and - for all your prego ladies - ITS COOKED and heated through! Needless to say, that is what I ordered. It was delicious and will definitely be back for this specific sandwich. My husband got the chicken marsala risotto and it was also delicious. It tasted just as wonderful the next day when we reheated the leftovers. Overall, great environment, staff, and quality of food. Don't let the location fool you. The food is amazing! I had the pan-roasted chicken and it melted in my mouth! The bread pudding is a religious experience! The service was great.
