Fumi, Satomi and Kristina are the most amazing team in Waikiki. Both my husband and I moved back to the island because we both got contracts. I kept Fumi hopping as our leasing needs changed about 4 times in less than a week. :D She never failed us once. She was always on time and on target with the rentals. I have read some reviews that criticized her communication skills. Neither my husband (who is from the UK) nor I had any problem understanding her or communicating with her. Is the background check stringent? Yes. They ask for a lot of information. Having a background in commercial real estate investment, I do not blame them one bit for being so detail oriented. In any place where there is a transient population, thorough background checks are key to finding good, stable tenants. I had scheduled 7 showings in one day and only one other realtor besides Fumi showed up. I couldn't get other realtors to call me back and we were not renting low end apartments. Satomi needed to cover for Fumi on one showing. She was lovely, punctual and answered all of our questions. Kristina answers every email promptly and always had the answers to everything we threw at her. The most amazing part of this team is the fact that we have to leave the island unexpectedly, so we have to break our lease (we signed for six months). Most realty companies would just shrug their shoulders and say "your problem, who cares? You are on the hook until your six months are up." Fumi and Satomi have gone out of their way to put the unit back on the market and show it, so they can find another tenant for us. That goes above and beyond any realty/property management company that I have ever worked with. Because of their efforts, hopefully there will be another tenant here within a month, saving us 3.5 months of rent. We hope to return again to Oahu, and we will go no further than Hawaii Joy for all of our real estate needs. read more

As bad as it gets. I am a professional with a doctorate level education, so I am a relatively erudite consumer. I will try to be as fair as possible, but I have nothing positive to say about Hawaiian Joy, LLC. So, here I go with my list of objections. First, some of the staff barely speak English. For instance, my contact within the company was Fumi. I needed a translator to communicate with her. If I attempted to communicate directly with Fumi, it was virtually impossible to understand her, and I had to speak very, very loudly and very, very slowly and repeat myself many, many times merely to communicate very, very basic information. It was a totally exasperating experience. Second, when I did eventually get through to Fumi, she would continually drop the ball. Instances of her incompetence include not showing for scheduled appointments, showing several hours early for scheduled appointments, showing up on the wrong day for scheduled appointments, or calling minutes before a scheduled appointment to say she was canceling. Additionally, she rarely returned emails or telephone calls. Third, in the five years (5) that I leased from "Hawaiian Joy" (the exact opposite of my experience--more like Hawaiian Hell) the company refused to make one single repair to the property. Talk about being avaricious. The company is so parsimonious that it completely ignores lessees' requests for reasonable repairs. Fourth, if one is considering leasing from Hawaiian Joy, then carefully reconsider because on average every six (6) months or thereabouts the rent increases. Fifth, unprofessional is not the word. Some standard much, much less would be the apropos characterization of Hawaiian Joy. For instance, when one visits the office on Kalakaua, the first impression that one gets is that the office is a complete disaster zone. It looks like a bookie's office in some gritty underworld movie with a large chalkboard with chicken scratch scribbled all over it to keep track of incoming monies. In conclusion, I could go on but hopefully this vignette will steer the wise in the right direction. read more

Unprofessional. I found this place through craig's list site. I currently live in Island Colony studio and was looking for a 1 bedroom in Island Colony and found their post. so I contacted them and someone named Satomi was helping me. I took a look at the place and liked it and asked her what was needed. Satomi was great for the most part as she was helping me get the place. One problem I had was that I lost my wallet recently and so I had no normal photo ID but I did have my temporary "permanent residency" photo id.(temp id the state gives you until you receive the plastic one) I sent the application form with everything but not the 25dollar application fee because Satomi said their office is going to close soon and I can just pay the application fee tomorrow. So I asked Satomi to ask her boss if this Photo ID is acceptable and if not that's fine because I will just have my mother apply for the room.(I sent her my mother's ID also) She said she will and give me a call back next day around afternoon. Satomi also stated that she will be holding the room for me until she has chance to get back to me. So I also sent my current land lord the 20 Days notice for vacating my current studio. Next day for some reason I get a call from their office around 10:00AM and the lady tells me that Satomi isn't there right now but they can't accept the temp photo ID that I sent. I told her that's fine I have already told Satomi if that's not acceptable my mother will apply for the room. and here's the conversation after that. Her: No sorry we can't accept your ID. Me: I told you that's fine my mother will apply for the room. Her: You do not have a valid ID. Me: I told you my mother will apply for it. Her: I am sorry you don't have a valid ID. Me: Wait I don't understand what you are trying to say. I have sent my mother's driver license on the email. Are you trying to say my mother can't apply for the room either? Her: because you don't have a valid ID. at this point I was just confused if she was trying to troll me or if she didn't understand English. So I asked her "can you just leave a note for Satomi to give me a call?" She said "she will tell you exactly same thing" We repeated same thing couple more time and she just hung up on me. So I called the office later after noon to talk to Satomi. She just got back in the office so she had no idea what was going on. She puts me on hold for about 5minutes to figure out what's going on and told me "Yeah I guess my boss called you earlier today and told you that we can't accept your application form" I was like "ummm yeah you were suppose to find out of my temp photo ID was valid or not and get back to me since I told you my mother will apply for the place" she replied she wasn't sure yet and her boss just said no. I did not want to do the same dance again so I told her "you know what, can you just ask her what was the reason she told me I can't apply for the place and give me a call back or an email. I'll drop it as long as she has a valid reason for this" That was last week and no phone call or email. Now I have to find a place within couple of days since I already sent the 20 days notice for my current place. I am assuming this is what happened. Satomi prob didn't communicate very well with her boss about the photo ID and how she was suppose to get back to me. Since Satomi was gone for most of the morning and her boss prob found another application for the place and decided to rent it out. So when she called me and I told her about the backup plans she had nothing to say since she can't admit making the mistake of renting the place out to someone else while they promised to hold the place for me. Anyway avoid at all cost. Not worth the trouble and time I wasted on this company. read more

I was a tenant in an apartment managed by Hawaiian Joy for three years. I had a terrific experience with them and wouldn't hesitate to give them my highest recommendation. The apartment was amazing and on the few occasions that something broke and needed to be replaced, it was done so quickly and I never had to pay a dime. Additionally, when I had to move out early due to last minute military orders, they allowed me to terminate my lease early (even earlier than required by the SCRA) and even refunded excess rent that I had paid. Absolutely horrible experience after dealing with Fumi and Satomi. Communication is impossible with the older one; zero English skills. They are two faced, nice when they are at fault and super rude after you've paid everything or need something done in the apartment. I would NEVER recommend them as a realty company. All email communication was sent to me at 5pm so I could not answer or get any further info until the next day. Very unprofessional. Their only goal is to get your money and get the unit in the same condition- they count the old rusty forks, too, and you better have all of them or you're going to be penalized. Horrible customer service. We use most of our hard earned money to pay rent to this place monthly and every time KAREN treat us like our money is worthless.
