I ordered delivery on DoorDash because making selections on Uber Eats doesn't work properly. Service: They failed to give me the spicy mayo and miso sauce which I was looking forward to tasting in my bowl. No sauce made for such a dry meal. The tofu was dry and there was barely any shrimp. I heard good things about this place, but I've also had better poke bowls from elsewhere. Don't get me wrong, the bowl was made with fresh ingredients and it would have been much better with some sauce. Oh and I've been inside once to get a bubble tea, the place is small and narrow. The bubble tea was not good at all unfortunately. I don't know if I'll go again unless my go-to spot is closed and I'm craving a poke bowl. read more

Daughters B-Day- could not decide where to go to eat. She has been there before and raved about the food and how good she is with chop-sticks. So we went.... At the time we went - being after 7 the place was pretty much empty. My daughter and I got the My little children bowl. Had to have the crab removed from mine. (Didn't want to die that day) and my son had a citrus bowl of some sort. Sorry really don't know the menu. But it was amazing. So much flavor packed in a bowl. Short and sweet. Plan on going back- highly recommended. Super friendly staff / owner If you're looking for something new give this a try. read more

Last night my daughter and I ordered some dinner from Hawaii Kitchen. You really cannot ever expect takeout to look like eat-in, and this was the case with last night's dinner. The order came in three plastic containers and the food was "stuffed" into those containers. When we took the food out of the containers it was all squashed and wasn't too visually attractive. Now to the important stuff -- the food. It was hard for me to believe this was sushi. For years I've been eating sushi from Japanese restaurants here in the states. One of these restaurants is in New Jersey near Pennsauken and I would rate the food amazing and excellent. I don't go there often but when I originally found it I went there as many times as I could -- I was living in Blackwood at the time. I had the following menu items at for takeout from the Hawaii Kitchen. Chicken tempura roll Cucumber roll California roll Seaweed Salad My daughter's order was similar to my order although not the same. She ate about three bites, and didn't eat the rest. Into the garbage it went. My order was soggy -- a state I never find appetizing, and seemed too moist. Nevertheless I wanted to make sure what I was tasting was true and I so wanted to enjoy the food. I don't think any of the rolls was remarkable and certainly would not make me return to the restaurant. Although the quality and taste might be better in the restaurant, I would consider trying it again. The rolls were what I would call bland. The only item with a taste was the seaweed salad and that was because it did have some taste from the sesame seeds and light heat. As I was eating I was asking myself the question, was this a Hawaiian style sushi? Another aspect of the food was that it was pretty bland. The tempura had some texture and taste, but it too was lackluster. I would rate the food with a single star and that would definitely represent a NO-GO in my book. As we all know, eating out today is very expensive and the restaurant better make it a good experience whether eat in or takeout or diners like myself will never return. read more

I remember reading an article towards the end of 2016 about upcoming food trends for the new year. In 2017, it stated, poke (poh-KAY) bowls would be all the rage. In typical Reading, PA fashion, poke bowls have finally arrived - in 2018. Seemingly behind the curve in any and all gastronomic trends, the raw fish salad with Hawaiian origins can now be obtained on the quaint Penn Avenue strip in the heart of West Reading. So let's begin with the star of the show - the poke bowls themselves. There are a bunch of pre-built bowl concoctions, but I found it's best to go "Chipotle style" and create your own bowl for maximum artistic license (and value). This option allows you to pay a set price for your choice of rice and either two ($10.95) or three ($13.95) proteins plus up to an additional 20 toppings at no extra charge. So go nuts with avocado, edamame, spicy mayo, seaweed salad, kani, bonito flakes, corn, mango, masago, wonton crisps ... the list goes on. The bowls are absolutely the way to go here. Anyone looking for a sushi burrito should look elsewhere. A few miles down the road sushi burritos of equal quality go for about $7.99, compared to $10.95+ here. One glaring omission is wasabi. I want the option of adding a huge glob to my poke bowl or have a side come with my sushi burrito. I love slathering that tear-jerking, sinus-clearing green goo on any raw fish related food item. "Where do you go, my lovely (wasabi)?" - No Mercy It should totally be one of the 20+ items you can add on. Or it should come by default with every order. Other than that teeny, tiny grievance, this place is absolutely a breath of fresh air to the area. I love how we keep getting new restaurants representing cuisines from all corners of the globe each and every year, and Hawaii Kitchen is certainly keeping up the trend. read more

My daughter loves this place. Been going here a few years now. I don't normally eat this stuff but my daughter got me hooked! Great food, clean place and usually the wait isn't long. Well this has been an obnoxious delay, pero times are hard. Have you ever tried convincing 12 year olds to go on the computer and work on school assignments? No? Lucky you. Okay beside the point. This is a typical Poke bowl spot, with a few sushi rolls and apps included (of which I haven't yet tried). My friend and I grabbed a custom bowl and the Salmon sushirrito (I always go custom in these scenarios. I have a big appetite..ALL OF THE TOPPINGS). I've been to a couple spots like this, and that's my main reason for docking two stars. The pricing is mostly on par to what's expected, and the serving sizes are filling. I'm pretty sure they didn't add a couple of the sauces I requestedt though, so it just didn't blow my mind like it could have. The space inside is pretty small, but I like the counter seating along the entrance wall. Also, the woman putting together the food was so kind and friendly. Overall I plan on going back to give another fair shot, especially considering it's the only Poke spot around Reading read more

Okay so I don't know what was different the first time I went there but the few times I've had sushi DoorDashed from them it's been awful and I take it all back. I might have just been desperate for something that wasn't pub fare, but this is a poor excuse for sushi. Nasty. read more

I was super excited to try this place out. I ordered a custom poke bowl with two proteins and almost all of the toppings. I gave a 4 stars because u asked for sushi rice but got brown rice. Solid food and service. This is a fairly new establishment located on a busy block in West Reading. We had to park a little over a block away on the block behind it. It was around noon, during the lunch rush. The restaurant is long and skinny so we were lucky to snag a table. We ordered at the counter. The food came out pretty fast--we both got the Honolulu burrito. It was good but you couldn't taste the spicy tuna very well. The best part was the fried sweet potato--I wish there was more of it! There was one gender neutral restroom and it was clean. Overall this was a great, easy stop in a road trip! read more

Horrible food order a cold roll and came out lukewarm and vise versa and the chicken was barley cooked

This relaxing and adorable spot in the middle of the block offers fresh healthy food. We always get the same thing, the sesame bowl and the veggie sushi burrito. The bowl is so flavorful with mango, seaweed salad, avocado, purple rice, sesame seeds, and tofu -- I add extra greens. The burrito is like a giant sushi roll. We never have leftovers. You can make up your own bowl, but the sesame bowl has everything I love; sometimes I just crave it. You can BYOB, and the owner Cindy always plays chill music. She remembers your name and what you like. Whether this or that is authentic makes no difference to me since nothing is really authentic once you think about it. The food is high quality and delicious, and the environment is beautiful. Wonderful addition to this neighborhood and shopping corridor. read more

Went for a take out order but was concerned that the fish might be hanging around too long since it's quarantine and all. Broke down after walking away and placed the order. On both occasions upon entering the restaurant the server/ manager/ owner was preoccupied in the back and did not greet me with a warm welcome. This is important to me since I walked and drove past dozens of other restaurant in an effort to support their small business. I had the sushi rice with salmon, chicken, avocado plus mix ins and sauces. The salmon was buttery and had no off taste or smell the chicken on the other hand was straight cardboard. It was dry, chewy and flavorless, I am certain that it was several, several days Old. The avocado was entirely brown and was literally one tablespoon. Cost $10.99+ I was UNDERWHELMED! read more

Never again. I ordered online and paid the almost $4 convenience fee to place an order online for pick up ASAP hoping for the 2 bowls I ordered to be ready when I got there. Online order stated to give 20-25 minutes until pick up. Arrived right at 25 minutes and only one other person at the counter to pick up... he was also waiting on food. At 30 minutes, I was finally helped and none of my food was ready. She showed me her tablet to confirm it was my order. If she was going to wait to make my food, I would have just placed my order in person, avoid the convenience fee and waiting. If I hadn't already prepaid, I would have walked out. But because I already paid, I patiently waited for another 25, almost 30 minutes for her to make my food. Finally got it, no apology for the delay and when I asked for chopsticks, she hesitated. Entering this restaurant was not safe. No handicap entrance...3 steps and then up a slanted "ramp". This place also has no parking and I was forced to park very far away. When returning back to my car, I was hounded down and followed by some stranger asking for money... he did the same to the people behind me. The area did not feel safe, I was glad it was still daytime. Got home to tiny portions of everything, just pinches of toppings not full scoops like other poke places in the area. Did not satisfy my appetite. Do yourselves a favor and avoid this place. I would rather drive 10 minutes farther and go to pokebowlstation in Lancaster. In a nice shopping center, lots of parking, $1 cheaper in price and portions are much more. They also have more selections for proteins such as eel, octopus, shrimp tempura, etc. read more

I come in regularly for my Cindy Roll and normally love it and get great service but today I was given the worst roll of my life. This is a $16.91 sushi roll which is tempura shrimp with mango, avocado, spicy mayo, crab meat, and masago. Today my shrimp was cooked to death! There was barely any shrimp or mango in my roll, it was over-cooked, the breading was extremely hard (inedible), the shrimp wasn't deveined, and the shrimp was like hard rubber. So incredibly disappointing for the price I paid! When I called to complain I was not offended a new roll or the money back, I was only offered a $5 credit towards my next purchase. This is unacceptable and not how you keep your customers. You have to be consistent. You have lost a good customer who sent many good referrals. read more

I post this review after my third visit. Truth be told- I wanted this place to be excellent, which is why I tried it three times (left disappointed on each attempt). I'll be brief: portions are small for the price; quality of protein and rice was lacking; they advertise fresh/raw ahi, but you are served peppered/seared tuna by default (I found out on the 2nd try you have to specifically ask for freshly cut tuna if you expect it to be uncooked). The veggies seemed fresh and the sauce was ok, for the most part. Their optional ingredients were plentiful too (which was nice). Service was quick, but friendly turned to ticked-off, when I had to ask for fresh/raw tuna. It seemed to be a reoccurring pain point from the young lady's reaction, behind the counter (which came off as "I'm told to do it this way, despite wanting to please the customer"). Considering there isn't much nearby to compare it to - I'd say give it a shot; but don't hold your breath. read more

This was such a delicious amazing meal! I was hoping for good and was amazed at how wonderful everything was. Had the jalapeño tuna as an appetizer which is a jalapeño filled with tuna and Lighty breaded and fried tempura style, melts in your mouth deliciousness. Then I had the spicy salmon bowl as my main meal which was great in every aspect filled with Lani salad, seaweed salad, fresh salmon, edamame topped with a sriracha aioli. As someone who lived in Hawaii for many years and has traveled there because I love the culture and the food, I found this restaurant to be a cheaper imitation of Hawaiian food. Everything seemed to be of a lower quality. Th spam musubi, a staple of Hawaii, lacked the flavor that I'm used to and was prepared in a way that makes me question if their chef knew anything about Hawaiian food. Their selection of rice (wild grain?) wasn't sticky. The poke bowl was disgusting. I'm this place uses initiation crab....this was absolute mockery to Hawaiian food and this operator should ashamed of themselves. Cheap food and high prices equal early closure. Especially when you consider their location. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this place. It was my first time having a poke bowl so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I ordered the spicy salmon bowl, which didn't quite have a lot to it. My friend ordered a create your own which seems to get you much more bang for your buck, definitely what I'll do next time. The sushi rolls were also decent but nothing to write home about. I loved the flavors in the bowls, and I can't wait to try some more combinations. All of the ingredients were really fresh. There isn't too much seating here but luckily we seemed to come at a pretty slow time, so it didn't cause any issues. read more

I am originally a West Coaster. I have craved Hawaiian food since I moved here over 6 years ago. I would have to make it myself or wait until I visited west. I spotted this yesterday and immediately had to look it up. I tried to order online but it wasn't working. I was ordering to take in to work. I called and placed my order: spam musubi, coconut mango smoothie and build your own poke bowl. I don't eat raw anything so I created my bowl with chicken and tofu. When I arrived I was greeted with a smile. My order wasn't ready, although it had been 30 minutes. However my wait was acknowledged and she apologized. She forgot to put in my musubi and I could not wait because I needed to get to work, I was given a coupon for a return visit. The smoothie was good, however it was more of a iced juice drink. I drank all of the juice and there was a ton of ice left behind. The flavors were good though. My bowl was delicious. It contained: brown rice, chicken, tofu, onion, edamame, pineapple, eel sauce, cucumber, mango, seaweed salad, rice seasoning, and wonton crisps. It was tasty and fresh. This is a refreshing place to have here in Reading and I hope it does well. I definitely will return. read more

Hawaii Kitchen is exactly what West Reading needs. In a town that has just about everything, I was ecstatic to hear they were bringing poke bowls and sushi. The place is small and intimate, and the owner treats everyone like family. Special requests, questions, and conversation is always encouraged. When busy the wait can take up to 15-20 minutes, but is totally and completely worth it. I recommended entirely. read more

If I could give this place negative stars, I would. Got a spicy tuna burrito last week. Everything was fresh and high quality. It was AMAZING. I was in love, so I ordered another today. What I received doesn't even deserve to be called sub-par. It was worse, far worse. The price was higher than on the website, fine. When I got home, I found that the burrito had LETTUCE in it (which isn't supposed to be in it at all), NO ahi tuna but a low quality, bright orange mush that I was told is their "spicy tuna mix," no sweet potato tempura (which is supposed to be in it), and NO avocado (which is supposed to be in it). I called and had to spend 20+ minutes on the phone with the manager trying to accuse me of ordering a different one last time, then had to drive over there AGAIN (if you know west reading, you know how beyond annoying this is to do at 5pm) with the burrito for confirmation to receive a refund. Total waste of time. Think twice before you order here! Guess having a good sushi burrito place around here was too good to be true. read more

This is a great spot to get a poke bowl on a warm day. The protein was good (ahi was seared which was different than west coast poke joints) and the extras were very fresh and plentiful. They didn't charge extra for avocado or seaweed salad which is nice. Good selection of drinks and modern comfortable interior. Prices are average for poke bowls. My only suggestion would be to have a board behind the ordering area to list all the options for each 'stage' of the poke bowl so each client doesn't have to pick up a takeout menu. I'll be back and hope they stay around!! read more

The veggie sushi burrito was just what I needed. Tofu with sticky brown rice kind of thing, veggies wrapped in that sushi seaweed stuff. A little bit of sauce in that, slightly sweet and faintly spicy. I think some folks would enjoy it with hot sauce I didn't ask if they had any they probably do. Yes, it is pretty much like a burrito, smaller than a chipotle burrito but still generous. Their bowls looked appetizing as well. read more
