Situated next to a canal in a Centraal, De Haven van Texel is a hidden gem. Stopped by here on my last night. I was craving something traditional and something different. Ordered Dutch pea soup and chicken satay. Both are amazing. The soup reminded me of American split pea soup. Hearty and delish. Chicken satay was very unexpectedly really good. Something about the chicken, maybe the peanut sauce? I don't know. It was good. Must stop if you're in Centraal Amsterdam. Smoke pot first before hitting this place up. read more

Cozy tavern, food was very tasty and well prepared. The winner for me was the pea soup, fantastic! Great selection of beer.

I came here at around 4:30ish when it was about 90 degrees out. This place is in a very touristy area, but I wanted an Aperol Spritz and eat some food. There was quite a lot of smokers around, so be prepared for your clothes to smell later. The dutch pea soup I had was somewhat heavy for my liking but it was good. A beautiful awesome day amazing people of the world. Today were in Amsterdam, Netherlands. My go to restaurant for Dutch Food has closed down, so I'm going to a new spot. Welcome to Haven Van Texel. Right at the north end of the red light district. A colleague of mine said she goes here for traditional Dutch cuisine, so let's get to the food shall we. Of course we're going to snag an order of the Croquettes. Nice bite size potato mash balls with meat in it. These ones are nice and neat with a perfect delicate crunch. Great balance of potato to meat ratio. 8.2/10 For my main event, the Stamppot. This is a rotating dish that's usually different every time. Whatever protein that's available in the market with seasonal vegetables in the mash. It's like a lovely surprise every time I visit. Today we have pork. Perfectly seasoned, the meat was fall off the bone and the mash was a delightful side. 8.7/10 The place is really nice, the tables outside do go fast during busy hours. The staff was nice enough to let us sit by at the bar so we can enjoy some drinks while we wait. I would definitely smash here again. Gastropub in a little bit quieter area of centruum. It's right next to the water with outdoor seating which is pretty nice. Not much to speak of in terms of ambiance otherwise. Service is quick to seat you at a table and take your order but after that it's pretty hard to get their attention, and they definitely don't come around to check on you which is disappointing. Food was good, the bread platter had some great sauces but the bread itself was cold, would have been nice for it to be toasted or at least warm. The ribs were delicious, meat falling off the bone, and a decent serving size. The salad was nothing noteworthy but the fries were crisp. read more

Cute spot, right on the canal. Window seating and outdoor/ patio options, as well as second floor. Right at the end of the main strip, so it stays pretty busy. They took me as a single, no problem, but groups more than two probably need reservations on the weekend. Had several beers on tap, a fairly generic menu. Stopped here on a day that Amsterdam was experiencing severe heat waves. The waitress was kind of enough to sit us and got us waters away. This location is located right by the water, so you get a nice breeze while seated outside. The food and beverage was absolutely perfect for such a hot day. The food was delicious. Had great presentation. We had ribs. The ribs melted right off the bone and in your mouth. The fries were nice and crispy too. Don't you hate soggy a$$ fries??The drinks were tasty too, had lovely presentation, and refreshing. The drinks were rather large. Definitely worth the price. And the plate was big enough to feed two. Which is what we did, we split the me. You are not going to go hungry here at all. The only thing here, which actually, I have noticed all over Amsterdam. Tourist trap. If give it no stars if I could. They charge you €15 for water without any warning. I asked for water when I sat down. When it came time to pay the bill, it showed €15 for the water! For my party of five, this is still €3 for about 250ml of water. I'd pay for my water if there was advanced expectation setting. Some restaurants in the U.S. charges $1/person for water, which is stated clearly in the menu and often reiterated by the waitress. Neither was the case with this restaurant. When you sneak up charge on your customer, it's dishonest. This was the most expensive item of my order. I asked the staff, and this is how my conversation went with the larger sized middle aged blonde woman: Me: Excuse me, is this €15charge correct? Her: Yes it is. Me: I was never told about water would cost €15. Her: Your waitress normally asks you, "still or sparkling." Me: My waitress never asked me that. Had she asked, I would've said tap. Her: [Shrugged shoulder] We don't serve tap here. We pour water out of a bottle. Welcome to Holland. So welcoming and responsible, right? To the staff: think about what kind of impression you leave about your country and the character of the Dutch people. To the visitors: please choose a different restaurant. This restaurant gets good marks on location. The views of the canal and city are rather nice. The place has outside sitting and there are a few tables inside. The menu has some items that almost anyone can enjoy. We took awhile to select our food items and most opted for the chicken satay, the beef, or the fish. The dishes nicely prepared, but almost all of us had the same comment that the spices were overpowering the dish. It is too bad; if not so prevalent, the dishes would have been fantastic. The service was fair. The main complaint was that it took a long time to get our bill. The food was brought to us in a timely fashion. One person asked a specific question if the dish included an specific item and was told no. Well, that item was on the plate. My friend did not want to send it back and simply "worked around it" since it was a side. Overall, the place is rather nice in a busy, tourist area. Wow, I will totally come back to this place. I loved the warm welcome and non stop friendly chat w/the employee's to the most delicious Pea Soup (filled w/hugh chunks of potatoes, carrots, ham and slices of sausage) to the unbelievably mouth watering brined pork rib. The rib was the most tender and tastiest I've ever had. The owner said that he soaks the pork in salt water to make it tender and add flavor. Then, he cooks it honey n thyme ( I swear, he threw a touch of beer in it) w/fresh carrots, potatoes, peppers, beans, sweet yams, squash...your palate comes alive. I really enjoyed this restaurant. It is situated on a canal and has a view from inside the restaurant as well as outdoor seating. There is also an adorable dog named Flip who lives at the restaurant. For dinner I had the chicken satay. I wasn't 100% sure what to expect but it was delicious! It was chicken breast with peanut sauce. There were quite a few pieces of chicken. This is a surprisingly amazing outdoor breakfast spot, right in the heart of Amsterdam! The view is breathtaking, right along the canal of the Red Light District. Drinks were fantastic, I highly recommend the Warme Chocolademelk. My friend and I ordered a bacon omelette to share between the two of us and the portion was quite generous. I was a little surprised to see this establishment rated as three stars by its Dutch reviewer. The interesting thing about restaurant dining is that the experience is largely dependent on abstract things, such as the chemistry between the server and the customers. Perhaps we caught a better night and staff? Whatever the case, on the night my dining companions and I went in, our experience was almost magical. On the night of December the 7th when we went in, we had just braved over five hours of train and bus travel (with a toddler) to get to our hotel, and then Amsterdam. (The trip from Friesland was a nightmare because of snowy and icy weather conditions that had plagued the A6 all week.) As we stumbled from the Central Station of Amsterdam, feeling barely alive, we needed some good food and service and we needed it that second. To our great fortune we tried De Haven van Texel by absolute chance. We began the meal with some fortifying Berenburg. (The toddler opted for water instead.) Thus warmed and restored, we ordered: -Frikandel met patat (a sort of sausage and fries served with applesauce) for the youngster -Varkenshaas puntjes met champignon roomsaus gegratineerd met Beemster oude kaas (pork with a mushroom cream sauce and cheese) for my adult dining companion -The Fish Special of the Day for me Dinner was enjoyed with a bottle of red wine. The Fish Special was excellent. The child's meal was perfect. The pork could have been a tiny bit more tender, according to my dining companion. However, it was very appreciated that they prepared it without cheese, to his request. Dessert was Dame Blanche for the little one. The adults enjoyed an alcoholic dessert coffee (Thanks to public transit!) and Creme Bruleé. The Creme Bruleé was very good, but it could have been served a little warmer. Our wonderful servers knocked themselves out with the child's dessert. It arrived with sparklers (like the ones people in America wave on the Fourth of July). They lit up the whole restaurant, but most importantly, they lit up the child's face. That kind act characterized all of the friendly service we enjoyed there. Our waitress, in particular, was kind and bonded over a love of Thomas the Train with the young diner. I wish I could recall her name, she was wonderful. The view, alone, is worth dining here. We were seated by the windows and enjoyed a lovely late night scene of swans and ducks squabbling elegantly below. If De Haven Van Texel deserved to be docked a star for the not perfectly tender pork or the slightly cool Creme Bruleé, they MORE than earned the credit back by going above and beyond in every other way. All in all, it was a superb dining experience that I recommend. read more

The owner and his wife only cook fresh food, trust the staff and always consider the special. Most times the special is the best, it is rarely in English so you may have to ask the details. For the past two years, February of 2013 and 2014, I've been here with a few colleagues as we wrapped up business trips to The Netherlands. Last year was by accident when we tried to find some later night dining and another establishment recommended them because they were open late. This year we decided a return trip at an earlier hour. Both times we had great service, great food, great atmosphere and we will be back. We mentioned to our server this year that we had been there last year and returned because of the food, service and atmosphere. She told us the restaurant was family owned and operated. I told her to let her parents know we returned because of the experience last year was so good. She said her Mother was there and brought her to our table. Mom seemed thrilled that we came back and went into detail on the menu (particularly letting us know it changes every 6 months) and the establishment history. We were treated as family; had another delicious meal and were farewelled with a "See you next year!" as we left. We spent a good 3 to 4 hours there and never felt we were rushed to leave. If you can only have one meal in Amsterdam - go here. Have a (or more) Texels beer (bock for me) and the meal of your choice.
