We went to Anne Frank Tour, afterward we went to De Reiger for dinner. The asked if we had reservation which we didn't, so they told us they can't take us without reservation. First night in Amsterdam we found this great little spot who was able to squeeze us in for amazing dinner. All the food was cooked to perfection and had amazing flyovers. The shrimp appetizer was the perfected starter (we just needed a little more bread with that amazing sauce) the fish of the day had a beautiful bur blanc sauce. The mussels were by far the best I've ever had cooked perfectly with amazing flavor. Such nice service from everyone during the entire meal. We came here on a whim on our first night in Amsterdam. We are so glad that we did because it turned out to be a delightful evening. This restaurant is located in the cute/hipster area of Jordaan. The atmosphere is very homey and cozy. It felt very much like a mom and pop's French Bistro. The service was attentive and informative. They gave good recommendations for the food. I had the mussels, which were done perfectly. My boyfriend had a steak, which wasn't very tender. He wasn't exactly pleased with meal, but enjoyed my mussels and fries. I walked inside around 8 PM for a light dinner and a glass of wine and was seated immediately. It was crowded and the food smelled delicious. The servers were really friendly and explained the specials and gave me space to enjoy my food. I will definitely come back here the next time I'm in Amsterdam. Definitely is a neighborhood place with tasty food. I had the small ravioli and it was more than enough food. There's a bar area in front if you're just having a drink, or they'll see you in the restaurant area toward the back if you're also eating. Arrived about 8:15 pm we didn't have a reservation, but asked if any availability. We were told that we could have a table on about 20 mins. We were happy and waited. About 20-25 mins we were seated at a table. 2 other tables near us were seated at the same time and they were given menus. We weren't. We waited thinking maybe there weren't enough at the moment. 15 mins later still no menus. Bar person came and asked about drinks, still no menus, so we ordered basic beers. They came, still no menus. We asked a neighboring table if we could look at theirs and they them to us and ordered. Eventually, the server came and took our orders. Should note that the other 2 tables were given bread and already their food had come out. We waited. The other 2 tables finished eating and had more drinks. Now almost 30 mins after ordering our food comes as we were almost ready to give up and leave. Food was all good, but not remarkable. Not sure if what we experienced was an abnormality or what, but if we were local, we would not likely return. read more

Your typical friendly Dutch "pub." Gives you beer and food fast and let's you chill there eating it. Things were on the salty side, but I realize that's both a pub thing and a local taste thing. Pork chop was juicy. This was my first time eating bitterballen so I don't have much to compare it to - but they reminded me of slightly meatier potato croquettes. All in all, a nice place to stop on a rainy afternoon for something that really sticks to your ribs... and beer. read more

Wow, 6 years later and this restaurant is still awesome. It definitely gets busy so if you're there on a weekend you'd probably need a reservation. We went early mid week. We shared the ravioli as a starter which was delicious. I had the mussels, it was a huge portion and so delicious. It came with frites. I sampled the ribs and the steak, everything was delicious. It's been almost a year since I was last in Amsterdam. After having found this spot on yelp then, I returned for a second round. I was not disappointed. The same bright cheerful barman greeted us at the door and despite not having a reservation found a place for us. OMG the food. My muscle dish couldn't have been better, and it was a big bucket. Served with thick fries that were crisp to perfection. My partner had the beef stew special. It's flavor was amazing. The wait staff even went out of there way to explain some local beer and this amazing cocktail sauce of whiskey, mayo, lemon and ketchup, but made in the restaurant. So amazing with the muscles! Lovely evening and a great meal in a beautiful old world off the beaten path Amsterdam restaurant full of charm. De Reiger is one of the oldest cafes in Amsterdam. The restaurant is located just outside the Jordaan neighborhood. The three of us managed to snag a table without a reservation by arriving shortly after they opened for dinner. We started off our meal with a nice bottle of red wine and an excellent beef carpacio appetizer. My sister and I ordered the duck and thought the duck was so tender and paired perfectly with the roasted vegetables. My husband enjoyed his veal as well as a Belgium beer. Our dinner at De Reiger was one of my favorite meals in Amsterdam. I enjoyed the lamb stew, while she had the ravioli. A nice primitive from puglia paired well with our food choices. Arriving at 19:00 we had to wait about 15 minutes for a table. Our last night in Amsterdam. We were 0 for 2 in that both restaurants we picked were closed (it was Tuesday). We sat down at this small pub. It took a few minutes for the server to stop over, but he brought some toast and olive spread. Very good beginning. The server brought us drinks including a light Pino Grigio and a aperol spritz. We ordered the pea soup as there were good recommendations for it. It was the bomb. Not your typical pea soup. It was light, with crawfish and some herb butter. There was a thin slice of dark bread nice presentation. When my wife said I could finish the soup, no hesitation here. It was licked clean. Next, I ordered the pig suckling cutlet with potatoes. The meat was a pork cutlet, it was tasty. I thought I was getting a fried pork cutlet, except that it was browned. The ratatouille was through the roof. The wife ordered the cod fish special, it was flaky with a light cream sauce. The potatoes and leeks were well cooked. Come if your in the neighborhood, the locals do. Total cost was 66. Service was good considering there were only 2 people working tonight. Tuesday is not a very busy night in Amsterdam. read more

Cafe De Reiger is a great little historic gastropub serving great food including fresh fish and Dutch classics. They DON'T take reservations, but don't let that discourage you, especially if you're eating before 7:45 or so. These folks care about the food they serve, and it shows. This place is the near perfect neighborhood cafe. Just remember it's cash only. I ended up here completely by accident. A coworker was looking for a place with Amstel and interesting food. We wandered through the Jordaan until he saw the upside down Amstel sign. That was the sign this was the place to eat. It was busy and we ended up at the communal table. That was a treat too. We had a wonderful visit with the other people at the table. The food was excellent. We didn't know they had English menus. That was a plus too. After that evening, this was a regular stop. The food was always good and the bar friendly. It wasn't until long after we started going to this place that we learned it showed up in guidebooks. It was more fun finding the place ourselves. The story about why the Amstel sign is upside down is interesting too. However, I'll leave it to you to find that out. read more

My main regret is that we didn't try this restaurant earlier, otherwise we would have come here twice this week! Excellent bistro/brasserie type food. Everything was excellent. We actually arrived half an hour before the kitchen opened for dinner, but the nice bartender said, "it's not too early for a drink, please sit down!" We had the breaded brie with eggplant purée which was excellent. I had the veal ribeye steak, also excellent. And, my wife had the goat cheese soufflé, which she really liked. We shared the coconut parfait for dessert, which was also quite excellent. As you can tell, I was very happy with De Rieger. I would highly recommend this spot. De Reiger is a delicious spot for a meal. It's a lovely restaurant with a real bistro feel on a beautiful, quiet street. We sat by a window and loved watching everyone leisurely bike by. The food was also excellent. We started with the mint and pea soup, which was rich and tasty and filled with "Dutch shrimp," which were the tiniest shrimp I've ever seen. Yet, they were packed with flavor, which surprised us. For entrees, we had the spare ribs and the sea bass special. The spare ribs were crispy and perfectly paired with fries, some vegetables and a garlic sauce. The portion was absolutely enormous. The sea bass was also excellent and consisted of two large pieces of fish served over tagliatelle in a saffron sauce with root vegetables. Such a great neighborhood bar and restaurant, we discovered it while staying at an Airbnb on the same block. The staff is particularly friendly and helpful, there seems to be a very personal sense of ownership amongst those who work here. The menus are written on chalkboards around the restaurantGiving you an idea of some of the other dishes that are available, off the menu. This was our last night in Amsterdam and in this neighborhood, so we had an extra special meal. We tried a selection of different local and regional beers. And we enjoyed a great appetizer dinner and dessert. Our food was well prepared and delivered quickly. It was tasty, not a scrap remained. We did a starter with a sushi roll, a modest serving but tasty and beautifully presented. My entree was a steak atop green beans, both perfectly prepared and plated. At one point on our trip through Amsterdam, I got a hankering for mussels. Though I think that's more of a Belgian thing, I was told it's not *not* a Dutch thing. Anyway, the place was solid, seemed to be a local favorite. The mussels were really, really good. There were some peculiarities to it, but that may be us being American. The service was a bit on the slow side (not a huge deal, but the food was hot and salty and it took forever to get refills). And we each ordered the mussels but we only got one salad and one set of fries at a time, which made for a really awkward way to eat it. With its corner location on a charming cobblestone street in a quaint neighbourhood, De Reiger already has a lot going for it geographically. This is especially true for those guests, like us, lucky enough to snag an outdoor table on a beautiful summer evening. The server brings out the chalkboard of specials and leans it against a lamppost across the street so you can take your time contemplating your choices. This is very well done bistro fare, a bit Continental, a bit American, a bit farm-to-table. Everything was delicious and the service was charming and friendly in a Dutch way. We had just completed a walking tour of the Jordaan and were looking for a place for dinner nearby. Luckily, Yelp pointed us here and we have no regrets! On arrival, we were seated promptly and advised of the day's specials. We ordered the tomato and basil soup (from the regular menu) and the mussels (daily special) along with a bottle of rose. The food was simply amazing and reasonably priced. Beyond that, the service was great and it felt like we were so welcome here by not only staff but other customers, like we were old friends. Upon arriving in Amsterdam (we stayed in Jordaan) we were lucky to stumble upon, with Yelp's help, what we believe to be the best meal we've had in the entire world. We didn't know until the food arrived, especially considering its modest exterior, the cat sleeping on the window sill inside (he literally sleeps all day long - I'm allergic & it wasn't an issue), and the towel fuzz that lined our wine glasses...but the food was far and away the best we experienced in all of Amsterdam (and Paris, and...and...). It was so outstanding that we returned a 2nd time before leaving the area, and try to pursue variety. Highly recommend the Spare Ribs (ordered on both occasions). The clear All Star. The Salmon special was also terrific, and came in quite a large portion. The duck breast was moist, but slightly bland. Do yourself a solid and order the ribs. If you're outside the city center and looking for an eccentric culinary adventure with beautiful smaller canal vibes, this spot is not to be missed. read more

In The Netherlands, on May 4, there is an event called "Dodenherdenking" ("Remembrance of the Dead"). It's a moment to commemorate the Dutch victims of wars since World War II. On that day, my wife Kathy and I happened to be having dinner in the Jordaan district of Amsterdam. in a small neighborhood restaurant called "De Reiger". It's not a tourist place: it's mostly locals. Our host at De Reiger, Ralf, came over to us at about 7 pm, and explained the meaning of the event. He told us that his grandfather had been killed during WWII, and told us what to expect that evening: At 20:00 (8 pm), the restaurant would turn down their music, some folks would go outside, and everyone would be silent for two minutes. He asked us (very politely and apologetically) to please be quiet for those two minutes. When it was over, the nearby church bells would ring and the evening would continue as normal. We told him we'd be honored to be able to participate, and thanked him for explaining it. Then we kind of forgot about it. Later I watched him making a pair of identical drinks for a pair of Dutch men sitting at a nearby table. He put Irish Whiskey into a glass, spooned several small spoonfuls of a dark powder into it, stirred it, then brewed a fresh double shot of espresso and poured that into the glass. Then he got out a large square plastic tub of real whipped cream from his refrigerator, and floated it on top of the coffee mix. We asked him what it was: Irish Coffee. So we asked for one, obviously. Look at my photo to see what it looked like. You can't see in this shot, but the glass has the words "Irish Coffee" printed on it. The small brown cookie is a "stroopwafel": two thin crispy waffles with a soft gooey layer of caramel in between. I took a photo of our Irish Coffee at 20:02. We'd had the drink less than two minutes at this point. Right after Ralf had given us our Irish Coffee, I realized that he'd immediately gone outside, and was standing quietly with a couple folks. He was late for Dodenherdenking because he was laboriously making an Irish Coffee for an anonymous pair of American tourists. We both had quieted down, and remained silent, along with everybody else. Once the church bells rang, we took the picture, and finally tasted our Irish Coffee. Simply and sincerely, I've never tasted anything else like it in my life. It was the best drink I've ever had. And I don't like coffee. Kathy agreed, and she doesn't like whiskey. So, we owe thanks to Ralf. He and the rest of the staff fed us a wonderful meal, and graciously encouraged us to help them remember their dead. We're sorry it made them a little late. (It took me until today, May 6th, to realize that the bells we heard were from Westerkerk, a church inaugurated in 1631, where Rembrandt is buried, and whose tallest-in-Amsterdam church tower apparently featured prominently in Anne Frank's Diary. Located on one of the main streets leading into the Jordaan I took some visitors from out of town here because they fancied a plate of ribs for dinner and this place rates high for a tasty plate of the best ribs in the area. From the outside the place looks much larger than the much smaller place that greets you when you go in. It's a gezellig little cafe with good food, a full bar and a nice selection of beers and wines. Theres a chalkboard full of daily/nightly specials to choose from and a fairly simple main menu. The service was friendly and attentive being served by several people to keep us properly maintained with food and drink. We ordered two plates of ribs for the three of us. My dinner companions shared a plate. They serve a very generous serving of ribs, two layers worth, with a small serving of vegetables underneath along with a side of french fries. The vegetables were mushrooms, zucchini and onions. The fries were hot, crispy the way I like, hot and steamy inside, with a container of mayonnaise to dip them in. The ribs were tender, moist and delicious and flavorful. Being finger food and somewhat messy they're served along with a finger bowl, a very nice touch, much appreciated as you could quickly rinse your fingers should they become too sticky rather than just wipe them on your napkin. Thumbs up on the ribs. Worthy of multiple trips and highly recommended. They're also dog friendly. read more
