his is a family favorite of ours. We have been several years and enjoy it every time. It is family friendly, clean, well priced and has great camper spots. This is centrally located in Hatteras and quick access to all the Hatteras favorites. I will also say, this campground is a family owned campground, it's not a "resort" and some of the reviews I've read sound like people expecting a whole lot more than they should. Just to start, very difficult to maneuver your camper in many areas, looks more to be about how much we can pack in with no thought of the folks vacationing. From the major road repair needed to keep from hitting 10in. Deep or holes in and out of the drive , to the most unattractive scenery(see pictures) . Tiny houses in the middle of camping sites , To overgrowth of weeds and grass around the camp site. Thanks for showing us which camp site not to do again. We pulled our camper to Hatteras Sands Campground at the end of July. Although a lifelong multiple-times-per-year visitor of the island, I had never stayed at Hatteras Sands but decided to give it a try as it is the campground farthest down Hatteras island near where we like to fish and play. I was easily able to reserve a campsite with 2 months notice and was pleased to see it was even slightly cheaper than the nearby campground we frequent. This, however, is the extent of my positive review. When booking your stay you are only able to select between three types of sites (waterfront, double waterfront or full hookup) but cannot select individual sites and are subject to being moved by management any time prior to arrival meaning you may end up in a much smaller or larger site than intended. Our concrete pad was huge but faced directly into the sun, as did everyone elses. There were almost no rules posted on the website prior to booking. I did receive a confirmation email with very few additional rules, including "each site allows for one vehicle" with an additional $10 per vehicle per day for each additional vehicle. In what feels like an intentional oversite, the campground neglects to mention that even when paying for an additional vehicle, it must be parked in "overflow parking"- an unlit, unkept grassy lot behind the main office shared several trash piles and an excavator. Additionally, the rules provided at check-in seem to suggest a fee for use of a dirty pool. These additional fees completely negate any savings by choosing this campground. Not only are the two on-site staff members rude and aggressive during interactions but after discussing concerns over parking and after our request to speak with management, they lied and stated we had yelled, cursed and verbally attacked them. We called and left a message for management at 4pm and heard nothing back. At 9pm, an angry man approached my husband at our campsite claiming to be an owner. He said they had on video that we verbally assaulted his staff and we needed to leave immediately. After some discussion and his inability to provide a video, he backed off and said we could stay. To be honest, we should have just left because these interactions were so uncomfortable that they ruined our entire visit to a beautiful place. Lastly, the onsite laundry room contains two washers and two dryers, but one washer was broken making it impossible to get a load completed. I would rather miss an opportunity to visit one of my favorite places than ever stay at this campground again. Do yourself a favor and stay at Frisco Woods Campground just a few miles away. read more

The campground was very adorable but I'd say the staff were not so friendly. My experience while checking out wasn't great and I felt like I was being talked down on, and when I went to buy something from the store it was closed earlier than the posted times. read more

We love this campground. Centrally located in Hatteras Village. They just laid new large cement pads which after any amount of rain is a blessing. So much work being done to improve the camp ground. Love the air conditioned and tiled bath house. The Olympic size pool is nice and clean intact the just brought new lounge chairs. They have cabins and cottages for those who don't camp but want the experience. Love the canals that you can fish from or drop a kayak or paddle board into right from your campsite. This is an extremely long review but please read and beware before staying at Hatteras Sands! My family and I are frequent campers at HS; we usually come down twice a year for the past several years. Until now all of our experiences have been stellar and even though Hatteras Sands is a little run down in some areas we liked staying because the staff was friendly and accommodating. I do not know what has happened (perhaps new management or ownership) but things are severely lacking in the customer service department. Let me preface by saying I witnessed the below events and was completely shocked by the behavior and level of unprofessionalism in which things were handled. My cousin rented a double lot and was told even though she paid for the double lot that since she had two cars she would need to pay an extra $100 for the second vehicle to park. She paid this $100 as well as an additional $75 for her mother to be able to come and use the overflow parking which is nothing more than a grassy lot next to a bunch of junk. She proceeded to park her additional vehicle in the space next to her camper as instructed. While cooking dinner we were being watched by a male outside the office and as we sat down to dinner the female "manager" and male rode over on their golf cart to inform us that our fire needed a cover over it if we were not cooking; no problem, this was an oversight on our part. Then miss manager advised that we needed to move said vehicle to the overflow parking even though my cousin had a double lot and paid $100 extra for parking. I proceeded to get into a heated argument with the woman, she refused to listen and was extremely rude. She made sure to say "I'm the manager who runs things here"...Was I in the wrong for yelling? Perhaps I was but she informed us that the owner of the campground would be calling; great! They never called... The next day my aunt and cousin went to the office to discuss the matter calmly to which the manager was very condescending, rude and unwilling to have any kind of dialogue. She instructed them to leave the office immediately; which they did without further conversation or argument. The same male from the previous night proceeded to follow them on his golf cart and confront my aunt screaming at her and telling her to "go smoke some more meth". We assume because we are residents of West Va. He said this in front of my 9 year old son and two other small children. This was highly unprofessional and utterly uncalled for. At this point she is in fear that this man is going to potentially harm her or her children. She proceeded to pack up her entire site and the children while this same male sat at an empty cabin nearby and watched her the entire time. Creepy! Finally...the owner did call; she was very nice and did her best to rectify the situation. But the damage had already been done the result being a partial refund for the remainder of the days left on their reservation and my cousin moving to a campground down the road. To me this is not acceptable; she should have been give a full refund. Later we were shocked to find out the aggressive male is not even an employee of the campground but a subcontractor who performs odd jobs and the boyfriend of the so-called manager. They actually live in an area at the back of the office. They both made everyone feel unsafe and uncomfortable not to mention the derogatory meth comment. A word to the owner- this is not how to do business. You need to check in on your employees from time to time. Allowing such behavior is appalling and they will put you out of business if things continue on this way. I have read other reviews, we are not the only ones to have these issues. My cousin, my husband and myself as well as my mother in law; we all paid and we all saw and heard what happened first hand. We know many who frequent this establishment and we will be telling them all about this experience. More than anger I feel disappointment at the entire situation. This is our first time to OBX and happened upon this cabin option. First off, it's a great value option to stay in the area. Hatteras Island seems much more remote/less touristy than the northern parts. Staff very courteous and friendly. The cabins are very basic and it's good to have the ones with bathrooms. Beach access is a short drive away. Nice compound with pool and canal area where you can fish/boat. Very enjoyable trip that I put together on short notice. Cabins don't have much noise since the a/c (noisy) runs all the time. read more

We stayed in Cabin 18 and it was perfect. Great bed, nice clean bathroom, excellent air conditioner. Parking next to cabin made for easy unloading/loading. Laundry facility easy walk across the bridge. Our first night, we were in a cottage. It was also really cute and clean, but no parking at cottage. Had to use parking lot and haul everything to cottage. No water at cottage and no direct path to bathhouse. It worked for one night, cabin for the rest of our stay was worth the extra $. Hot tub and one of two washers broken. Wifi spotty. The managers, Steve and Christy were very good. Solid 4 out 5 stars. Good campground for money (Hatteras is expensive area). Easy accessibility to everything on island but separate from main road. You can literally step out of camper and fish. We caught Drum, Spot, croaker, and a ton of crab. read more

So because we were not prepared we had nothing with us so that we could 'camp' in our little house we rented. We were in a purple one. We had neighbors on both sides of us. One side was long term renting. We checked in late because the two ferries we had to take took a lot longer than we thought. The free ferry to Hatteras may run every 15 minutes but that doesn't guarantee you a spot. We had called and LM for them about our late arrival. We were not sure how they would handle our not checking in before the office closed. They leave the keys on the board with your name on them. You can check in the next day. We had a map thankfully and we located our little purple cottage. We chose the one with the air conditioner. We love air and we would rather be comfortable than sweating. We do that enough in Florida. Upon arrival we noticed there was no bedding, no towels, no shampoo, etc.... ugh I had no idea I was supposed to bring these things since the reservation was made by someone else. It was ok, we improvised. Blankets from the car. Pillows from the car. Quick drying pillow covers for towels. There was a microwave and fridge. The cottage itself was super cute. The shower was nice. Great water pressure. Very clean. We would stay here again in a heartbeat. The laundry facility was great. $3 to wash. I can't recall how much for the dryer. The pool looked very nice. Three people were using it. The campground was semi flooded when we were there. This was before Irma went through but they still had a lot of rain the few nights before we got there. It was quiet in the area. There was a grocery store just down the way. There are a few restaurants scattered around the area. Or use your microwave and stay in. Don't walk through people's camping sites to get where you are trying to go. Just take a couple of extra minutes and walk around. You wouldn't want people walking through yours, would you? Staff was friendly. We enjoyed our time here. The garbage is on the way out so be sure to take yours out and leave it in the receptacle. Oh, the one thing I would say is they could use some shade at the pool. There were no umbrellas or tarps over the water. It was hot as crazy out there. read more

Having never been to the outer banks before I didn't really know where to stay. Compounding this, I also decided to go at the last minute. While I had tent camped on the way there, I decided to try the Hatteras Sands camping cottages. They were rustic which I was looking for but really pleasant. Painted bright colors they gave a beachy feel. The cottage was a tiny two story, two room dwelling with a queen bed on the bottom and two twins on top. Downstairs there was a mini fridge, a microwave, a TV (surprisingly) and a great air conditioner. Outside was a grill and a picnic table. The bathrooms were in a common bathhouse that was kept clean, had good showers and were nicer than what you expect camping. The RV spots were full and many of the open air (no trees and no shade) tents spaces were utilized. It seemed like a popular place. Like everywhere else on the OBX, the grounds were popular with the mosquitos! Bring repellent. On our second day, there was a glitch in our reservation. They had double booked our cottage. The staff was incredibly accommodating and professional in handling this. I was very impressed and I appreciate a business that has excellent customer service. Everyone makes mistakes but when a business steps up and takes care of it with ease, it's a rare breath of fresh air. read more

Arrived mid afternoon with a 42 Ft. 5th wheel. Was staying on "the island". Went through the campground and had to drive around to the back side. The back side of the campground had NO signs. The road is a one lane road. Not sure if we were on the right road or not. Got to the end of the road. Right side had a dead end road sign, so we turned left. There is a HUGE hole in the road. The campground is nice, but the pool has no shade, no umbrellas. The steps in the deep end were broken. So only one set of steps in the entire pool. The hot tub is fenced in and not being used. Has nasty water in it. My sister in law rented the single wide . They had 2 small air units in the entire trailer. One in the living room and one in the master bed. They were too small to cool the trailer in the afternoon. The back bedroom had no air. There are stains in the carpet when u walk in. The ceiling in the living room was cracked. The front door looked like it had been kicked in several times. Do not cook in the trailer! You will die of heat exhaust. That place should not be rented!!! read more

Made a reservation in their trailer for a 3 day weekend. Had an emergency as one of our family members going on this trip who is 27 yrs old went into coma and incubated. Called and asked for a refund even though I was inside their 7 day window. Person spoke to was nice and said they would take my number and talk to management and return call. They never did. I called again , same thing very nice on phone and said they would return call after speaking to management and never did....A week later still no return call. Credit card billed and family member still in hospital. May be a nice place but if you have an emergency dont expect a credit or refund or even worse a phone call back. read more

Cool place. Bath houses are nice. Pools clean. Nice having the little creek to crab and fish on. Recommend bringing kayaks for dropping them over the side and hopping in. Beach access for driving on the beach is like a quarter mile away. Nice little town if with shops and very laid back if you're not looking for all the commotion of the kitty hawk area. Fairy to go over to Ocracoke is right there. Just make sure you get on it no later than 9. Or you'll be waiting a hour and a half. Highly recommend renting a gold cart from the rental place down the road because it's fun to ride through the town on them because it's allowed. BRING BUG SPRAY. Mosquitos aren't that terrible, especially if it's fairly windy week like we had but they are out there obviously. read more

Great campground! Some sites are a bit tight, but ours backed up to the canal and gave us plenty of "yard." Bathrooms were spotless! No bugs at all which is unusual at OBX. The pool is great! Quick drive to ferry and lots of shops. We love Frisco beach, so this is close. Wifi is spotty, but I think we could all do without wifi every now and then. read more

My husband and I took a vacation to the Outer Banks the beginning of July. We arrived at Hatteras Sands Campground on Sunday July 3rd a little before 3 pm. We found a sign on the office door stating they would be back at 4 pm. Two more people came in with reservations as well and all of us were left to wait for over an hour in a hot asphalt parking lot. No information was posted for us letting us know which campsite was ours. The garbage dumpster was located at the entrance and it was overflowing with garbage. How unsightly! The sites are pretty close together. Our site was listed as full hookups, but there was no sewer hookup. Instead an employee with a tank came by every day and emptied our tanks. Our campsite was between the swimming pool and the shower house. Other campers walked through our site to get back and forth. The pool pump was very noisy and ran constantly. The laundry room was quite dirty. It was obvious that it hadn't been cleaned in a long time. One of the washers that I had to use had a Kleenex in it that had come loose in someone's wash and was now dried and stuck all over to the inside of the washer. Ugh! The laundry room wasn't finished on the inside. It had been painted but the trim wasn't installed. The A/C wall unit was smaller than the hole it was in. When I expressed my displeasure with the long wait upon check in I was given a small 10% discount that didn't even amount to the "holiday charge" that was tacked on upon arrival. I was not told about the extra fee when I made the online reservation. I would never recommend this campground to anyone. Instead I would encourage someone to look at the campground at Frisco back up Rt. 12. read more

We chose Hatteras Sands because of the online presents. Looks nice and offers many amenities, however when we got there we soon discovered that the club house wasn't there, the laundry room has only one washer, the hot tube wasn't in working order. The only thing that was really nice were the bathrooms. The camp ground was very run down looking. The so called free wifi wasn't free as they charged my credit card for it and it barley worked, very spotty service. No cable as promised. They new the amenities were not available but didn't inform anyone! I also complained the to lady in the office and she said she would have the owner contact me, I never heard from anyone as of yet! I feel like we were ripped off at almost $60 a night. Save your money and go another camp ground! read more
