Pallets in front of our windo
Heather M.

My husband and I came on off season I would guess no more than 4 rooms occupied We were right next to the office on the first floor Every night some one was above us...really? The location is perfect Steps from ocean, shopping and restaurants The rooms are dated, dark and dingy The bed was comfortable There are no amenities, pick up clean towels and toiletries in the lobby Place your trash outside your room ..and no replacement garbage bags You were made to feel very uncomfortable if you went in the lobby A gentleman who worked there sat at a table (in the common space) on his lap top all day If you went in the lobby he awkwardly jumped up and addresses you But the kicker was our last 2 days a delivery truck came and dropped off pallets of boxes The pallets were placed right in front of our windows blocking any light into the dreary hotel room If you go ...go for the location !

This Inn may be the closest to classifying as hotel. There are many motel and bed and breakfast. This Inn has most reasonable price in the island. Reservation is a must. Because their season start at mid June to about January. We were there one week before the Virginia and North Carolina school have their summer break. It is perfect for us. The Inn has a tower you can overlook the Cape. We saw the lighthouse light there. The Inn also has 24 hour free coffee and juice at the lobby. Check Inn is very simple. The room is clean. The tower is soft. They do have swimming pool next to the parking lot. The walk to the beach is small distance. They have Area to wash off the sand.

"Good location. Clean room but double beds are small in size. Its twin, not queen. We checked in late, that's why we got very last room near the stairs. The room (#116) was clean, not smelly but we got twin bed as a double bed. First time I saw such small bed in hotel room. I guess, all others room must have a queen bed. Anyway, bathroom, the carpet was clean. They don't serve breakfast but they do offer juice and coffee. The amazing part of this hotel was it was just walking distance from the beach. We roamed beach in the morning. It was rainy day previous night so it was cold breezy morning. I loved it. They have a swimming pool but as it was cold, we decided not to dip in it. Cape Hatteras island is very small so everything is close to each other. This hotel is right on the main road. Overall good. 4/5. Recommended

Pet policy on website

Stayed at the Hatteras Island inn called before booking was told pets were allowed. So we went with our 5lb poodle and everything was fine upon arrival check in was great...Got to room and called desk to replace comforter because it had several stains, no problem one was brought in a timely manner, guy seen our dog and said nothing because we were told it was ok...cool....I cleaned our room due to sand and hair in the shower and some fuzzy substance in sink...that's cool too I never complained bc I can clean it and sanitize this...but it wasn't clean at all...Sunday morning we wake up get ready and place pee pads down and food for our puppy, go get breakfast and come back, we barely closed the door when an irate staff member told us they are not pet friendly and our "Damn yappy Dog" was a disturbance...now mind you when we pulled up she wasn't barking and not making noise I'm sure she barked a little when we left but she always gets quite in no time...she also told us she was charging our card $100 bc of the pet yet when we checked in there was a pet at the front desk another indication that it's pet friendly also there website states they are dog and cat friendly. Staff member was extremely rude and cussing when we never acted out of sort. DO NOT STAY HERE!!!! Not clean and rude staff member...we did our part by calling ahead and website even reflects pets are allowed.

The Hatteras Island Inn (this place is no longer a Comfort Inn) is okay, though I've seen better. The rooms don't have any views of much other than the parking lot, and it's an exterior corridor motel, meaning that everyone walking by can see right into your room because the door and the window are on the same side of your room. The beds are doubles, which felt a little small to me (I'm used to a queen-size, but it worked well enough. The location seems to work, being within walking distance of souvenirs, supplies, and food. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is also close by, but a tad further than most would probably want to walk. However, for a facility located on an island where mobile data service is spotty at best, there should be wi-fi available throughout the facility. The only wi-fi that this facility offers is in the lobby. That signal does not reach more than half of the facility. My room was 112, approximately halfway down the row of rooms, and the wi-fi service did not reach that room. The lobby is open 24 hours, but one shouldn't have to go to the lobby for Internet access, as wi-fi is a standard amenity these days. Don't forget while you're here, however, to check out their observation tower. It's worth five minutes for a quick look.

We got here at 1130pm and the reception was excellent, offered us a choice on the location of our room, we got a king room, rooms are very spacious and very clean.

However, the pullout couch was not the most comfortable so if you have a bad back, you might want to just rent another room. The location is unbeatable. You're less than a minute walk from the beach and have a great view of the east side of the cape. The host, Robin, was friendly and made some top notch, homemade breakfasts, even better than some restaurants that I've been too. Would definitely recommend!!

The breakfast and sitting area upstairs were inviting & bright. Mimosas for a small fee. We did see a few roaches wandering around but I suspect that's part of living in a warm & wet environment. Bikes available to borrow but beware they're not all in working order. My boyfriend's bike wouldn't allow him to use the brakes without the chain falling off. We had to stop mid ride for him to fix the chain which left his hands greasy for the remainder of our ride to the lighthouse. My main disappointment was location. While it is walking distance to the beach, it's not ON the beach. The town of Buxton was fairly run down. Next time I'd opt to stay in Hatteras, which we actually mistakenly thought we were when we booked.

We loved that Buxton had such a peaceful, laid-back vibe compared to the hustle and bustle of Kitty Hawk, and it was our first time staying here. There were so many charming shops and great places to eat nearby. The suite itself was spotless, tastefully decorated, and had everything we needed. We especially enjoyed having our own kitchen and living room so we could make breakfast and sip coffee while watching the sunrise over the ocean. The pool and hot tub were wonderful too, and everything around the property was very well maintained. Lighthouse View was the perfect choice for a relaxing, romantic getaway. We're already planning to come back again!

Swimming pool was nice and clean and so was the hot tub. Has vending machine and ice,and a grill. Although hotel is not wheel chair friendly. We are definitely looking forward to coming back later in the year and bring the whole family. The beach was beautiful and clean. And nice restaurants and stores in walking distance . Very wonderful place for couples or the whole family!!

This was a special trip for us, and it's a terrible feeling to be taken advantage of. I am from a coastal tourist area as well, have worked in hospitality. We have a phone record of the call on 9/30. This feels like a case of a fraudster counting on us to just say "oh well." We will not. I don't want this happening to one other couple or family. Everything from the process of selecting a cabana and checking on availability to arriving, staying, and checking out was smooth, simple as pie, and budget-friendly. We had our vacation dates picked out first and checked the website to see what would be available during the September 17-24 (Saturday to Saturday) week. There were plenty of options when we booked in July, but by September there were no vacancies listed on the website (though there was a sign at the cabanas themselves that said "Vacancy," so something might have opened up). The first half of the fee was due immediately, and the second half was due a month before arrival. The rates vary widely depending on the season. Ours came to about $570 for a week's stay after tax, fees, and trip insurance were all figured in, but "off season" begins in early September, thanks to potential hurricane threats. Prime season is listed in the brochure as $820.37 per week and may be more after fees. The cabanas are a mix of uniform and highly individualized. They're single-room affairs (plus a bathroom with a door, of course) on stilts -- you park underneath. They have no fewer than three decks: both front and back decks on the living floor and a third one at roof level. They all have air conditioning, a TV, and kitchen areas including a fridge and oven. They're all built of the gray, salt-blown wood that is popular all over the island. The best way to visualize the size is to think of a medium-sized dorm room with a kitchen. Beyond these details, they all have their separate personalities. The one we stayed in, Ocean's Door East (#27), had a rare two-bed setup, one of them loft-style. Most others appear to have one bed, some of them full-size and some of them queen. It was decorated with a beautiful array of beach-inspired wall knickknacks, many of which said "Welcome" on them -- and welcome we felt! The kitchen had lots of dishes and pots (but not all of the cabanas necessarily will, so come prepared!), and we were pleased to find beach chairs we could borrow. There were also a lot of children's beach toys, but again, that will vary from cabana to cabana, so don't count on it. This one allows pets, both dogs and cats, but not all of them do. We chose our cabana based on its proximity to the beach -- it was the closest one available when we booked. There is a wooden walkway that takes you over the dune, and there you are! There was always a smattering -- but not a crowd -- of people lounging, reading, fishing, beachcombing, or throwing balls for their dog. The waves were medium-height while we were there, but of course that can be variable. A convenient hose is located at the cabana end of the walkway for cleaning off sandy feet. About halfway through the week, we realized there was a hose under our cabana, too. Additional tips: Be aware that weather in this area is volatile. We had the pleasure of partly cloudy 88-degree days and rainy nights during our week, but it could just as easily storm, or a hurricane might blow through. Hatteras Island gets completely evacuated at such times, so get trip insurance. Also note that you will need to bring your own sheets, towels, and paper goods. This isn't a hotel, it's someone's beach home, so there will be imperfections in the accommodations, and you're cleaning up after yourself, ESPECIALLY right before you leave. Also, bring bug spray. Even though the cabana has an owner, it's through Dolphin Realty that you'll be paying your fee and signing your lease agreement. I did this all by email with them. They responded within a business day or so of any inquiry I made. It was all so easy and reasonably priced that we'll consider coming back to Hatteras Cabanas for future trips here!

When Dare County issued a mandatory evacuation due to Hurricane Erin, I was forced to leave my rental halfway through my stay. They hid behind a "forced field" checkbox about insurance buried in the booking process -- yet I never signed a lease, and their system still allowed me to book, pay in full, and check in. What makes this worse is the constant stream of promotional emails I received from Midgett about discounts on kayaks and beach gear, while they did little to clearly warn or emphasize protecting my stay through travel insurance. Clearly, sales come first -- customer protection comes last. After decades of loyalty to the Outer Banks, I will never book through Midgett Realty again.
