PROS: LOCATION ONLY CONS: OWNERSHIP,MANAGMENT,FACILITIES,CLEANING IF YOU EVER HAVE AN ISSUE WITH YOUR ROOM JUST KNOW THE MANAGMENT WILL NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT BEACH IS CLOSED AND THEY WILL NOT CREDIT ANYTHING ON ROOM EVEN THOUGH THE ROOM WAS BOOKED AS BEACH ACCESS AND THEY HAD KNOWLEDGE THAT THE BEACH WOULDN'T BE AVAILABLE AND DIDNT TELL THEIR GUESTS. The location is what is key for this motel. Without the beach access is a lower quality motel. Doors sticking, kitchen cabinets doors falling off, giant roaches on the porch, feral cats running amuck, exposed wires on the deck, RUSTED REFRIDERATOR, closest door knocked off and leaning inside closet, fuse box painted open so it will not shut inside bedroom, super basic amenities with beach access. Most of the above could be looked over since you have beach access right in front, however this week they are reconstructing the beach directly in front of this motel. DO NOT COME HERE unless you are willing to hear bulldozers back up alarms all night, or have your room shake all night or have absolutely no access to the beach. They have it closed with signs advising you are not allowed on the beach and this reconstruction is a 24 hour process with multiple shifts so it's non stop. The closest ramp to park in Avon is also closed due to reconstruction. The management team here acted as if they had no clue that this was going to be happening, and advised they is nothing they can do to credit any guests for the inconvenience. The manager acted as if he hadn't even looked at the beach to see what was going on, he also lied to Booking.com and said we could access the beach 200 feet away. COMPLETE LIES, I spoke to Nc department and no one is allowed on the beach within the boundaries of construction while reconstruction is in progress. They blow smoke to get you out of the office. Management acted as if they would be completed quickly. This was 4 days ago (July 27th) with no end in sight. Now they have pushed sand dunes all the way up blocking any access at all to any motel or hotels all around this location so you have to travel to the beach. Ignorance to facts is not a good excuse to explain the situation. They act as if it isn't a nuance to everyone here except them. Of course they don't care, the state is literally protecting their assets and they can leave to go home while their guests are having their trips destroyed. Do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else, as you will have to travel to enjoy your trip. If you are like me you booked this location due to its location on the beach. Save yourself the money and stay off the beach because you will have to travel to enjoy the beach. I get it the state is the one doing the reconstruction however the motel could make accommodations for its guests who paid multiple thousands to stay here, only for the beach access. No one wants to pay $400 a night just to have to travel to have beach access. The issue is when presented with the opportunity to do right by their customers the management chose not too, while other motels right next door did. Such a shame. We were repeat customers but this will be our last stay at The Outer Banks Motel. Do yourself a favor and look over this place next time you book to come to Buxton.

Here is a picture of the rash (turned out to be bed bug bites) after sleeping in one of their beds.

DO NOT BOOK WITH THIS COMPANY! I recently stayed in the Maude Estus house for a bachelorette party and I left a day early because the third floor room was INFESTED with bed bugs!!!! When we called to report it, we were told that there wasn't bed bugs and they would have the cleaning crew come replace the sheets. They arrived and I again told them there are bugs and they said "no, there was someone out last week and they said it was just red beetles. Well let me tell you something they were in fact not red beetles. One of the people in our group demanded that someone else come check out the house because we were certain it was. One of the co owners came out and he checked out the room and he found some bed bugs and that was only 15 mins after the sheets were just changed. He sprayed some at home spray and then sent out a pest control guy and was super nice and I thought it would be easy sailing from there. Boy was I wrong... when the same person who originally went to the office had asked for a refund that's when it went down hill. With her name not being the one who rented the other co owner refused to give a full refund. It was absolutely ridiculous and they said they wouldn't pay for us to stay somewhere else either. They ended up saying they would give us a refund for 2 of the 3 nights for half the duplex. We rented both sides and we were back and forth between both houses all weekend and because there was no evidence of bugs on the other side they told us just to sleep there. They offered to heat treat our stuff, which was just putting it in their dryer instead of charging us per load like they do at the house. I'm completely broken out in a rash all over my body and it's absolutely appalling to me that they kept denying that it was bed bugs and then when it came down to it and it really was bed bugs, they couldn't even give us a full refund or even pay for lodging somewhere else. We even showed them pictures of my rash in the beginning and still tried to deny it. I wish we could have just dealt with the first co-owner because he was so nice and so helpful and very apologetic and up until we dealt with the other owner, the property was pretty nice and the stay was nice.

Great find on a last chance stop in Buxton. Labor Day Weekend 2016. Large high def tv on wall across from couch. Cable provided.

Due to the Alligator River Bridge being closed because of an accident, and the detour was underwater, I pulled into Buxton late Saturday night, Labor Day Weekend 2016. NC-12 was underwater in many areas, and the winds were blowing the dunes onto the road. Tropical Storm Hermine was moving slowly north, and still impacting the Outer Banks. I was in search of lodging for the night, and stopped at The Outer Banks Motel in Buxton. I expected to pay over $350 a night(the going rate in Nags Head), but the friendly and courteous ladies at the desk told me they had an apartment in an old colonial style home for rent. $85 a night. I was happy to get anything , but when I arrived I was very happy. They exceeded all my expectations! Check my pictures. Located on NC-12, about a mile south of the office, 5 minutes from the Hatteras lighthouse. I was so pleased I extended my stay for two more nights. I plan to return soon! ...And I did return three weeks later. Same friendly service, same great apartment. MUCH better weather. I'm already planning my next visit!

So it a motel. You can't expect the Ritz but the furnishings smelled like body odor. Nice location and fair pricing.

The breakfast and sitting area upstairs were inviting & bright. Mimosas for a small fee. We did see a few roaches wandering around but I suspect that's part of living in a warm & wet environment. Bikes available to borrow but beware they're not all in working order. My boyfriend's bike wouldn't allow him to use the brakes without the chain falling off. We had to stop mid ride for him to fix the chain which left his hands greasy for the remainder of our ride to the lighthouse. My main disappointment was location. While it is walking distance to the beach, it's not ON the beach. The town of Buxton was fairly run down. Next time I'd opt to stay in Hatteras, which we actually mistakenly thought we were when we booked.

We loved that Buxton had such a peaceful, laid-back vibe compared to the hustle and bustle of Kitty Hawk, and it was our first time staying here. There were so many charming shops and great places to eat nearby. The suite itself was spotless, tastefully decorated, and had everything we needed. We especially enjoyed having our own kitchen and living room so we could make breakfast and sip coffee while watching the sunrise over the ocean. The pool and hot tub were wonderful too, and everything around the property was very well maintained. Lighthouse View was the perfect choice for a relaxing, romantic getaway. We had a quick one night stay on probably one of the coldest days of the year. Originally we were supposed to stay oceanfront, but if you know anything about the Buxton area, you would know that that was pretty unlikely. Right now that whole section of the hotel that is on the ocean is closed. So they put us in a room on the sound side and we actually had to use four-wheel-drive to get into the parking lot because of recent overwash. We were given a two bedroom efficiency unit that had a water view. It was very clean and basic. My only real complaint is that the blinds in all of the windows need to be replaced and need to fit properly. There are so many missing pieces and gaps that you have zero privacy in the living room area. And the broken blinds in the sleeping area let a lot of light in which could be problematic for some. We also woke up to no water because the pipes had frozen. Again, not a big deal given the below freezing temperatures when we were there. We used some bottled water to brush our teeth and were on our way anyway. This place is older and does need some work, but I don't regret booking there. It was fine for what we needed.

Everything from the process of selecting a cabana and checking on availability to arriving, staying, and checking out was smooth, simple as pie, and budget-friendly. We had our vacation dates picked out first and checked the website to see what would be available during the September 17-24 (Saturday to Saturday) week. There were plenty of options when we booked in July, but by September there were no vacancies listed on the website (though there was a sign at the cabanas themselves that said "Vacancy," so something might have opened up). The first half of the fee was due immediately, and the second half was due a month before arrival. The rates vary widely depending on the season. Ours came to about $570 for a week's stay after tax, fees, and trip insurance were all figured in, but "off season" begins in early September, thanks to potential hurricane threats. Prime season is listed in the brochure as $820.37 per week and may be more after fees. The cabanas are a mix of uniform and highly individualized. They're single-room affairs (plus a bathroom with a door, of course) on stilts -- you park underneath. They have no fewer than three decks: both front and back decks on the living floor and a third one at roof level. They all have air conditioning, a TV, and kitchen areas including a fridge and oven. They're all built of the gray, salt-blown wood that is popular all over the island. The best way to visualize the size is to think of a medium-sized dorm room with a kitchen. Beyond these details, they all have their separate personalities. The one we stayed in, Ocean's Door East (#27), had a rare two-bed setup, one of them loft-style. Most others appear to have one bed, some of them full-size and some of them queen. It was decorated with a beautiful array of beach-inspired wall knickknacks, many of which said "Welcome" on them -- and welcome we felt! The kitchen had lots of dishes and pots (but not all of the cabanas necessarily will, so come prepared!), and we were pleased to find beach chairs we could borrow. There were also a lot of children's beach toys, but again, that will vary from cabana to cabana, so don't count on it. This one allows pets, both dogs and cats, but not all of them do. We chose our cabana based on its proximity to the beach -- it was the closest one available when we booked. There is a wooden walkway that takes you over the dune, and there you are! There was always a smattering -- but not a crowd -- of people lounging, reading, fishing, beachcombing, or throwing balls for their dog. The waves were medium-height while we were there, but of course that can be variable. A convenient hose is located at the cabana end of the walkway for cleaning off sandy feet. About halfway through the week, we realized there was a hose under our cabana, too. Additional tips: Be aware that weather in this area is volatile. We had the pleasure of partly cloudy 88-degree days and rainy nights during our week, but it could just as easily storm, or a hurricane might blow through. Hatteras Island gets completely evacuated at such times, so get trip insurance. Also note that you will need to bring your own sheets, towels, and paper goods. This isn't a hotel, it's someone's beach home, so there will be imperfections in the accommodations, and you're cleaning up after yourself, ESPECIALLY right before you leave. Also, bring bug spray. Even though the cabana has an owner, it's through Dolphin Realty that you'll be paying your fee and signing your lease agreement. I did this all by email with them. They responded within a business day or so of any inquiry I made. It was all so easy and reasonably priced that we'll consider coming back to Hatteras Cabanas for future trips here!

When Dare County issued a mandatory evacuation due to Hurricane Erin, I was forced to leave my rental halfway through my stay. They hid behind a "forced field" checkbox about insurance buried in the booking process -- yet I never signed a lease, and their system still allowed me to book, pay in full, and check in. What makes this worse is the constant stream of promotional emails I received from Midgett about discounts on kayaks and beach gear, while they did little to clearly warn or emphasize protecting my stay through travel insurance.
