This could be a nice place if it was taken care of properly. Waited too long to make my reservations & this was the only place available for 3 weeks in the middle of the busy summer season. That should have told me somthing right there. After talking to several other campground owners at places we've stayed before, they agreed with me. Management needs to be replaced. If this place had a good management, it could be brought into the new millenium. We survived our stay, but would never ever go back there again.

Friendly staff are always on hand generally until 7 or 8 pm. They have gated access and cable tv. Full bathhouses are provided and are kept clean. The campground is less than 5 minutes from Cape Hatteras Lighthouse (by car) - it may be just a bit too far for most to walk. It's located on Buxton Back Road, so it's just off Hwy 12 but not ON Hwy 12. It's also within 5 minutes of the grocery. It's about 30 minutes from the Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry. They have 3 one bedroom cabins, 3 two bedroom cabins, and tent or RV camping. Lastly, the pond that surrounds the campground has hundreds of freshwater turtles that are people friendly and love being fed. I highly recommend this campground.

They also have a spot where you can pick up and drop off your keys to the cabins if you are coming amd going before or after their open hours. We stayed in one of the one bedroom cabins. It came with two beds with a mat on top but they do tell you to bring your own linens, which we did. The cabins only have ac not heat, which is one of the only few things I think they should upgrade to have a unit that does both as we stayed during Halloween weekend and the digits where in the 40's at night. Just enough to take the chill out of the air inside. But we brought plenty of blankets so we were pretty cozy but definitely didnt want to leave the warmth in the morning lol. I also think the grills need to be updated to something you can close not the tiny open faced ones they have. Even after scrubbing it down, our food tasted funny after cooking on it due to all the grime that had built up from being uncovered in all sorts of weather. Easy walk to the water and have a tavern and deli within walking distance close by as well with good food. Was a great place to sit outside and read a book and just relax, no blaring horns or city noise.

This campground has it all: easy late check-in, spots are clearly labeled, beautiful views, multiple clean(!!) bathhouses, a pool, great hookups, and even Tavern on 12 and Hatteras Sno-balls within walking distance for delicious eats! Also very convenient to the rest of Cape Hatteras and the Ocracoke ferry. We definitely plan on returning and spending more time around the campground, it was beautiful!

Absolutely the best trip in many years to this campground. If I was going to note everything no one…read morewould read this but there are several areas I want to touch on. First - the people. This staff was the best we have seen in years and I will account for it being the best since I have been an adult coming here. It was good seeing old faces like Aaron and Cowboy (and Cowboy's wife who is among the nicest people you could ever meet) again. Russ as GM (and his "get it done" attitude wife Betsy) and Ashley as AGM has done a great job getting this place back in order with bathhouses being very well attended and probably the cleanest I have ever seen them. There wasn't a day that we didn't see folks out making this place be in as nice and clean as possible. Now let's call this section 1.2 that I'm going to dedicate to the Summershiners (the folks who worked with the kids and specifically ran the activities). This is the most I have ever seen since coming here as an adult. David, Jason, Daniel, and Cori were just the next level of amazing. Their interaction was what makes family memories and this being the place we have our summer family vacation worth it. Forget friendly, they made you feel like family. I tend to make friends with other campers but these guys brought back what made the KOA special for me as a kid only this time it was my son who has the memories to go along with it. Whether it is making glass lamps, the fun/glow train, pie in the face, ice cream/cotton candy socials or really anything activity-wise, these are the type of people you want representing you as a company. I really hope to see them again in future visits but know they will be amazing assets to wherever they end up (and I would like to reiterate if anyone in management is reading this - bring them back!). Facilities - last year had me a bit concerned, I won't lie. This year the dog park was I swear double the size, the pool was clean and ready for use, and again, the bathhouses (what I believe has to be the worst part of working a campground) were clean and well maintained. Laundry rooms were reasonable in cost and machines were working! I shouldn't sound so excited about that but to anyone who goes to campgrounds, you know that is a rarity. Now to the campsite itself. The only thing we are missing in the site we get is the small pavilion to keep the sun off. The grounds were well kept, easy to level to, and everything I needed to hookup with was easily accessible. Hands down my easiest setup of the year. Beach access was accommodating with all clean off areas functioning perfectly fine. Pet wash was very easy to use at the middle bathhouse and thank goodness with how our mutt ran through the sand and water. Bottom line- I whole hearted recommend this place to anyone wanting to get away. Yes we camp/glamp but they have more than that for those wanting to get away. All look well maintained. It's great seeing this place returned to what it once was and not to knock my childhood memories, probably a bit better.

The amenities were way above par. Huge pool with hot tub. Tiki bar. On site restaurant (Shielas). I love this place for the simple things. Super dog friendly, everyone waves and says hi, and fun activities all day long. The furthest campsite from the beach is only about a 4 minute walk. I would suggest this campground to anyone visiting OBX. It's clean, friendly and the best KOA I've ever been to.

Absolutely awesome campground on Hatteras Island. I was up at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse National…read moreSeashore and talked to some rangers about the campsites they have available in the park. There was one quite close to the lighthouse with a great view of it and then this one way down in Frisco. I was surprised by how far away it was. I took a look at the closer campground and found it to be, as assured, washed out and flat. When I arrived to this site I knew for sure I was going to stay. They had recently repaved about half of the roads here and updated all of the bath houses with what looked like nice new tile walls. It being the off season the gate was not staffed. There was a straightforward process of signing up for a spot on the sheet by the window. Since there weren't many people here I had pick of the litter. I drove around the campground, picked out my favorite three spots and went back to the sheet to put an X by my favorite. Several on the back row sit on the top of a hill and have excellent ocean views. The ones nearer to the entrance are down low but well within earshot of the nighttime ocean waves. You have to watch out for sandspurs. Don't run around (or let your kids run around) barefoot basically anywhere here. Wait til you get to the beach to take your shoes off and enjoy the sand. In late fall the weather can still be firmly in the 50s-60s. It was incredibly beautiful and clear out. Bright stars, a moonless night and basically no other campers made for the best camping experience I've ever had! It's $28 for a site and they trust that you'll pay in the morning before leaving. It's very relaxed in the off-season and I highly recommend it. I would like to come back for a longer stay. Best campsite around!

So really, just pick any space that isn't next to the dumpster. Some folks had their cars parked and were in tents so that may be an option for you. I arrived before dark and had no problem finding my designated space that had a marker indicating my name and my dates of check in and out. After parking, I heated up dinner at my designated picnic table, enjoyed a discreet beer and then climbed the dune (on a designated path!) to watch the ocean waves for a bit. It's beautiful and there was so much room that I had a half mile of sandy beach to myself. Absolutely stunning. There are no lifeguards so be careful if you decide to swim. I did not. A quick shower in the shower cabin (cold water only!) and I locked up for the night. It was quiet and peaceful. In the morning, I was up just before Sunrise and on my way north for the ferry terminal to Hatteras. The campground has a dump station that is free if you're staying here. Other than the showers and some bathrooms, there isn't much else here. [Review 782 of 2025 - 4214 in North Carolina - 24342 overall]

Cons. *All sites are standard, non-electric. *showers would open only on April 1st. *watch out for sand spurs. At a minimum, they're irritating but they can also hurt! We would stay here again if in the area.
