Although I haven't been to Hartley's since I moved out of RI about 15 years ago, I am super pleased that it is still open, and apparently thriving. First and foremost, they make delicious savory British-style pies. Obviously scratch made. Back in the 1990s, a friend in Cambridge, MA was totally immersed in helping a family member (originally from England) who had a terminal disease. When I told her about Hartley's, she asked if I could bring some of their pork pies for her family. I am proud to say that yes, I brought a dozen pies, and that when he had bitten into one, it was one of the few things that had brought a smile to his face. They are REALLY good! So, why my stingy 4 stars? A few reasons, but none that is really much of a problem: First, it is truly like stepping into a shop from a different time and place. As a result, it is only open on certain mornings, and generally closes once they are sold out (often around noon!). This merely makes it difficult to drive any distance to Hartley's for the pies, as one can never be certain that they will be open and have pies available (BTW, their salmon pies were also great!). Although this is entirely understandable, Yelp readers should be aware of this, at any rate. Secondly, and this is NOT a fault of this establishment, but savory homemade pies are super fattening! And Hartley's pies are no exception. In fact, they are so delicious that one may be driven to eating more than one pie, and that can mean many calories and carbs from the pastry! I know that many of the pies in Britain use lard in their flaky crusts; I have no idea about Hartley's pies... Finally, as a former resident of both England and Wales, I can only point out that unlike, say, the classic Melton Mowbray pork pies in England, Hartley's pies have ground pork, while many of the ones in Britain have pork "chunks." This is not a substantial issue, IMHO, but some Brits take exception to the use of ground meat. One retort is that the pies at Hartley's seem to have less fat than some of the ones eaten in Britain, which may be a good thing! It is a cute little place (although as noted, I haven't been in a long time) and always had a bit of some other "standard" British stuff, as well. Think Cadbury's and other British candies, and I believe PG Tips teas and Marmite. Most humorous to me was a typical framed old portrait of Queen Elizabeth, much as one would ordinarily find in homes and some patriotic shops in England. Very sweet! read more

Howwwwww have I not had Hartleys before??? I pride myself on being a Rhode Islander and SHAME on me for waiting until 40 years of age to try these. 1. It is adorable. And iconic - since 1900?!?! 2. The staff was friendly, patient and chill. 3. The piesssss - so so so so good. I grew up on French Canadian meat pie. So I had to get the pork and potato pie. But then I figured why not get a couple pork pies and beef pies as well. Definitely not disappointed. Was happy to have this as a repeat dinner, and want to go back. Upon the recommendation of Yelp customers and having a yearning for savory pies I went to get pies that reminded me of my years in England. I had ordered pork, chicken and beef pies in advance. They were delicious warmed and very tasty. An old fashioned small takeout place with friendly staff lived up to its reputation. And well worth the inexpensive price of around $3 each for the pies. I went to try pies and have mobility issues climbing stairs. Owner saw I was having difficulty and asked what I wanted to order and brought them out to me. He gave me his card and said I can order ahead of time and sit in my car and he would bring them out to me. That was above and beyond if you ask me. This is a RI tradition since 1902. Their pork pies are $3 each and they also have chicken and other varieties. For the holidays, we placed an order 3 days before ....for pick up on Christmas Eve. They were not taking walk ups, so we got lucky, calling when we did. The pies come with nice gravy on top of the flaky crust. They are dense, flaky and full of meat. A winner on my book. read more

These wonderful single serving pies filled with pork or beef or a combo of both even chicken or salmon. Are so delicious and have not changed in taste in the 25 years I have had them since moving to RI. I know the hours are limited but every time I drive by and they are open I cannot resist stopping in for 2 or a dozen depending if I'm going visiting. You can even buy them frozen and heat later or the next day. They make a great main for a senior too who might have difficulty cooking they would just need to add a veg. read more

Simple Goodness Hartleys Pork Pie Shop (for take out) is one of those rare businesses that has been open for a VERY long time, has changed virtually nothing, and is still in business making the same fantastic pork pies. The shop is so tiny, I think only 3 customers at a time could fit in! You can get chicken, pork, or meat and potatoes, but the hot ones with the juices bubbling on top are the best! A Rhode Island Legend.....this small establishment sells small little Pork, Meat and Meat and Potato Pies. They are "individual" size and are $2.75 per pie. It is definitely worth your time and won't cost to much. Purchase a few and take them home with you. They are best eaten fresh the same day. Look for the "we've got pies" signs - cuz when they're gone they're gone. I have to admit that I also like the salmon and chicken ones . . . salmon if you don't mind a little fishiness . . . which I don't. My friend Andy said it best "The place of YUM" Great lunch item for $2.50. Try the Tourtiere, A pie that they do specifically for the french Canadian neighborhood. It combines beef and potatoes with a hint of Alspice. Make sure that you do not set the box of YUM down on your best jacket, or car seat. the pan juices can soak threw the box. I stopped in today, ordered 3 pork pies, and I was immediately impressed with the quality and flavor Hartley's puts into each of their pies. As I have stated in many of my reviews of other establishments, there is something to be said about establishment that specialize in one type of item and do it consistently well. The word 'Artisan' has been overly used in recent years, but Hartley's are definitely masters of their craft. Their unwavering resistance to change, from their store front to their product is a testament to their will to be the best at what they do. As far as the pies go, man they are good! Well-seasoned meat and a proper crust. Can't get any better than this. To be fair I have not tried anything but their signature pork pie, but I'm sure the chicken is equally good. I've tried several different varieties and all of them taste good. I like the original pork, and the beef, but my favorite is the chicken.
