Was finally able to stop by after years of curiosity . They have limited hours and I've driven by when they are "sold out of pies ". They are cash only! I was greeted promptly and ordered a pork pie and a meat and potato pie . They were piping hot when they came out. I personally preferred the meat and potato pie ! The pie crust was crisp and crunchy which compliments the filling perfectly . read more

Although I haven't been to Hartley's since I moved out of RI about 15 years ago, I am super pleased that it is still open, and apparently thriving. First and foremost, they make delicious savory British-style pies. Obviously scratch made. Back in the 1990s, a friend in Cambridge, MA was totally immersed in helping a family member (originally from England) who had a terminal disease. When I told her about Hartley's, she asked if I could bring some of their pork pies for her family. I am proud to say that yes, I brought a dozen pies, and that when he had bitten into one, it was one of the few things that had brought a smile to his face. They are REALLY good! So, why my stingy 4 stars? A few reasons, but none that is really much of a problem: First, it is truly like stepping into a shop from a different time and place. As a result, it is only open on certain mornings, and generally closes once they are sold out (often around noon!). This merely makes it difficult to drive any distance to Hartley's for the pies, as one can never be certain that they will be open and have pies available (BTW, their salmon pies were also great!). Although this is entirely understandable, Yelp readers should be aware of this, at any rate. Secondly, and this is NOT a fault of this establishment, but savory homemade pies are super fattening! And Hartley's pies are no exception. In fact, they are so delicious that one may be driven to eating more than one pie, and that can mean many calories and carbs from the pastry! I know that many of the pies in Britain use lard in their flaky crusts; I have no idea about Hartley's pies... Finally, as a former resident of both England and Wales, I can only point out that unlike, say, the classic Melton Mowbray pork pies in England, Hartley's pies have ground pork, while many of the ones in Britain have pork "chunks." This is not a substantial issue, IMHO, but some Brits take exception to the use of ground meat. One retort is that the pies at Hartley's seem to have less fat than some of the ones eaten in Britain, which may be a good thing! It is a cute little place (although as noted, I haven't been in a long time) and always had a bit of some other "standard" British stuff, as well. Think Cadbury's and other British candies, and I believe PG Tips teas and Marmite. Most humorous to me was a typical framed old portrait of Queen Elizabeth, much as one would ordinarily find in homes and some patriotic shops in England. Very sweet! read more

Howwwwww have I not had Hartleys before??? I pride myself on being a Rhode Islander and SHAME on me for waiting until 40 years of age to try these. 1. It is adorable. And iconic - since 1900?!?! 2. The staff was friendly, patient and chill. 3. The piesssss - so so so so good. I grew up on French Canadian meat pie. So I had to get the pork and potato pie. But then I figured why not get a couple pork pies and beef pies as well. Definitely not disappointed. Was happy to have this as a repeat dinner, and want to go back. The crust is thick and really holds up to the meat filling. Their business card had heating instructions and the oven was perfection. Go get yourself a meat pie. Or six. read more

Wow, what a hidden gem in little Rhody! I've been wanting to try to this place for awhile and was not disappointed. I came on a Thursday at 10AM and the chicken pies were already sold out. (Come early or call if you are hoping to try a specific one!) I ended up getting pork and beef/potato - both were delicious! They are $3.50 each and so worth it! read more

Upon the recommendation of Yelp customers and having a yearning for savory pies I went to get pies that reminded me of my years in England. I had ordered pork, chicken and beef pies in advance. They were delicious warmed and very tasty. An old fashioned small takeout place with friendly staff lived up to its reputation. And well worth the inexpensive price of around $3 each for the pies. It is a fifteen minute drive for me to Lincoln. I will be back. read more

We were quite disappointed after we finally had a chance to try their pork pie. I am sorry to say there is nothing special about it. I don't understand why all the raving is all about. After said, I think the best way is to try it and decide for yourself. read more

This is a RI tradition since 1902. Their pork pies are $3 each and they also have chicken and other varieties. For the holidays, we placed an order 3 days before ....for pick up on Christmas Eve. They were not taking walk ups, so we got lucky, calling when we did. The pies come with nice gravy on top of the flaky crust. They are dense, flaky and full of meat. A winner on my book. read more

The best pork pies around. Actually they all are good. Place has been there over 50 years. Definitely give them a try. They sell out fast.

This place has some of the best meat pies I have ever tasted. They have so many other food options too, like desserts and snacks and yummy things. There are plenty of drinks to choose from, and the service is sweet! Everyone there is super nice! Hartley's is the best! read more

I went to try pies and have mobility issues climbing stairs. Owner saw I was having difficulty and asked what I wanted to order and brought them out to me. He gave me his card and said I can order ahead of time and sit in my car and he would bring them out to me. That was above and beyond if you ask me. The pies were hot and delicious and I will definitely be going back again! Well done Hartley's! Thank you read more

A little gem hidden on Smithfield Ave best meat pies around!!! Very inexpensive too......................

These wonderful single serving pies filled with pork or beef or a combo of both even chicken or salmon. Are so delicious and have not changed in taste in the 25 years I have had them since moving to RI. I know the hours are limited but every time I drive by and they are open I cannot resist stopping in for 2 or a dozen depending if I'm going visiting. You can even buy them frozen and heat later or the next day. They make a great main for a senior too who might have difficulty cooking they would just need to add a veg. read more

Simple Goodness Hartleys Pork Pie Shop (for take out) is one of those rare businesses that has been open for a VERY long time, has changed virtually nothing, and is still in business making the same fantastic pork pies. The shop is so tiny, I think only 3 customers at a time could fit in! You can get chicken, pork, or meat and potatoes, but the hot ones with the juices bubbling on top are the best! You do need to watch their hours though. But worth it. Tip: Cash Only Tip 2: Meat and Potato pies are the best but they always sell out so get there before 12:30pm daily. Great old school gem, Thanks read more

A Rhode Island Legend.....this small establishment sells small little Pork, Meat and Meat and Potato Pies. They are "individual" size and are $2.75 per pie. It is definitely worth your time and won't cost to much. Purchase a few and take them home with you. They are best eaten fresh the same day. Personally I think the Meat pie is tastier than the Pork but they are both Yummy! This place is worth the trip! read more

Since I moved to RI in 1999 I have been going to this establishment. The quality of these beautiful, tasty and filling pies is unsurpassed.

Best pork pies anywhere. It's a hole in the wall place on the main road but the pies are wonderful.

The idiots who gave less than 4 stars just don't know food. I never go out of my way to review any places but this is just incredible. I eat out very often. read more

This is a little hole in the wall that you just can't help but love. Amazingly good meat pies at an affordable price. Come early or you might not get any. They do have them frozen for 50 cents less so we got a bunch before we flew back home. They reheat really well in the oven. Love love love these meat pies! read more

Ordered pork pies and got some pork & some chicken - no worries, we are omnivores. I did wonder after reading some of the other reviews if we got a bad batch. We found them tasty but quite dry - i suppose that's why they included the little bottles of sauce. Pies were well packed and arrived in Georgis still frozen read more

Shazam! another New England icon that has remained unyelped....I am chagrinned. This hole in the wall, retail only shop is about 10'x10'. They make meat pies and only meat pies. Mostly pork, but some beef and I think a salmon too. British style, small round pies about 4" across. Roast pork in a pork gravy with a flaky crust drizzled with more gravy. Oh God, its good. A box of 4 is around $5.00. Served piping hot, you can also get frozen to cook at home. read more

I grew up on frozen "pot pies", and frankly, hated them. Except for the crust. Thankfully, the people at Hartley's have thought long and hard and decided to remove all those bothersome vegetables, in order to make room in the crust to cram some more savory goodness! The price has inched up to $2.50 per piece, but still a damned bargain! Thanks again to Yelp for guiding me here! read more

PORK PIE PORK PIE PORK PIE!!! Delicious delicious pork pie. Traditional British style, softball sized pies - they are perfectly seasoned, baked in their own juices, self contained parcels of lovely. Look for the "we've got pies" signs - cuz when they're gone they're gone. I have to admit that I also like the salmon and chicken ones . . . salmon if you don't mind a little fishiness . . . which I don't. Kinda wish the crust was just a little flakier - but somehow that would be less authentic . . . I envision coal miners breaking these out in the depths of the earth on their lunch break. read more

GO HERE. EAT HERE. INCREDIBLE. Chicken, pork, beef, salmon. Everything you need to know is written above, but here are the details. for $2 each you get these lovely fist sized pot pies. They do not come in aluminum pans, the crust is extraordinary, deep brown, and hold the entire contents of the pie without assistance. Often coming right out of the oven. If you have a lot of napkins and are agile you can eat them right out of your hand. Just meat and sauce, not diluted with vegetables, perfectly spiced. The chicken is my favorite, beef second, pork a close third. here is a link to a photo of the pies, and a well- written review http://www.flickr.com/photos/7422037@N06/3507303649/ read more

My friend Andy said it best "The place of YUM" Great lunch item for $2.50. Try the Tourtiere, A pie that they do specifically for the french Canadian neighborhood. It combines beef and potatoes with a hint of Alspice. Make sure that you do not set the box of YUM down on your best jacket, or car seat. the pan juices can soak threw the box. I bring a newspaper to set it on. I always buy more than i need and pass the stoke on to neighbors and friends. Whatever i do not eat that night i freeze. Its a sad day when i open the freezer and realize that we are out. read more

Was lucky that my housemate had a box full of these cute little pies from a Christmas party. Been wanting to try them for so long! They did not disappoint! SO AWESOME! I stopped in today, ordered 3 pork pies, and I was immediately impressed with the quality and flavor Hartley's puts into each of their pies. As I have stated in many of my reviews of other establishments, there is something to be said about establishment that specialize in one type of item and do it consistently well. The word 'Artisan' has been overly used in recent years, but Hartley's are definitely masters of their craft. Their unwavering resistance to change, from their store front to their product is a testament to their will to be the best at what they do. As far as the pies go, man they are good! Well-seasoned meat and a proper crust. Can't get any better than this. To be fair I have not tried anything but their signature pork pie, but I'm sure the chicken is equally good. A definite recommend from me. read more

This place is a little hidden gem! The storefront isn't much to look at, but the prize is inside. These little pies are really yummy! I've tried several different varieties and all of them taste good. I like the original pork, and the beef, but my favorite is the chicken. They are full to the brim with chicken surrounded by this yummy gravy, and the dough is just perfect. I could eat these, hot or cold every day! I brought some to my coworkers recently, and they all like them now too. Highly recommend! read more

My wife and I have driven by this place several times on the way to get our daughter skates sharpened. We have never thought to stop in this little hole in the wall, however today we decided to stop in. We ordered two pork pies one chicken and one beef and brought them home. There's a reason why these pies get five stars on all of the various review websites! We started by splitting the chicken pie and boy were we blown away!! Flavorful all white meat chicken in a beyond tasty gravy in a perfectly crisp crust!! The beef and pork pies that followed were equally as delicious!! You can tell these pies are handmade on a daily basis using fresh ingredients. This place is an absolute must if you like a meat pie!! read more

First off, I'm a brit from deepest Lancashire - PIE country. Hartley's pies don't have the gelatin that some UK pies have.... BUT.... they are easily as good in every way. Meat, Pork, Chicken (a universal fave), Salmon, Meat and tater are available. The tiny store is JUST like stepping back to a 1960's English Pie shop. Have introduced these to my wife, daughter, work colleagues and all are now confirmed Hartleys fans - go figure. Best to call ahead as once they run out, they are gone and they close. The pies are 2.50 a pop and are small but filling. read more

While this store is tiny and accepts cash only, the meat pies are top quality. They carry beef, chicken, pork and maybe other flavors too, with pork being the main flavor. Many flavors run out quickly (around lunch time from my experience). In addition to the fresh, ready-to-eat pies, they also sell frozen pies that you can heat up in the oven. read more

Went to this place last weekend and split one of each kind of pie on the menu between two people. The pork and meat + potato pies were tasty and very filling, but the standout for me was the chicken. I'd eat those every day if I could. The beef, on the other hand, was very greasy and didn't have as much flavor. read more
