I had heard about these delicious English-style pork pies from several sources so I got the husband and the dog into the car and headed to Fall River early Saturday morning as they close at 3 and often sell out. The trip down South Main Street reminded me of when I lived in Providence (many years ago) and lived in a neighborhood like the locale surrounding this bakery. It was just what you might expect, small counter, freezer case, ATM and not much else but a tray of freshly made stuffies on the counter calling to me. I ordered 8 small pork pies, two fruit turnovers (for the ride home), a couple of stuffies, and a slice of carrot cake for Hubby. The world-weary woman who assembled all of this was very nice and gave us extra gravy for the pork pies. There was another woman working there that had a turkey hat on her head, so we'll just leave that on the table too. Hubby said the carrot cake was delicious. Huge square with cream cheese frosting. The fruit turnovers were a little lacking in fruit but the pastry was delicious. The stuffies had way too much ground choriço in them and the quahogs were overcooked and rubbery. Oh, and dry. The real star were the pork pies! I popped them into the oven and opened up the gravy. The gravy was VERY this. I'm glad she gave us extra. I boiled it down and reduced it down by 1/2 and it was just delicious! The prices are insane at this place too. Delicious Turkey Pie! Had it frozen and followed the directions exactly and it turned out beautiful and delicious! You can tell the crust is homemade and there was plenty of turkey and sauce inside. I Heart Hartley! I discovered Hartley pies after receiving a Goldbelly (a national food shipping website) gift card. After going through the positive Yelp reviews for Hartley's, I decided to order a combo pack with 2x 9" meat pies (chicken & pork). The order process was easy and went very smooth. They confirmed, updated and provided all the shipping info I needed, up until it was at my front door. Hartley staff did a very good job packaging the frozen pies and sauces. Everything was still frozen with more than enough ice to last a couple days. They sent my packaging list with a hand written thank you from Amy along with a bunch of stickers. The pies were easy to bake with ample instructions. Both pies were delicious especially with the sauce they sent. The meats were tender, the sauce was flavorful and the crust was flakey. The price was significantly greater if you order through Goldbellly to accommodate for shipping. I will definitely stop by their shop when in Massachusetts. I gave 5 stars for the service and product of Hartley's despite the Goldbelly additional charges. read more

This is a cash only joint! I kind of figured that when I went there, so no big deal. I went around 4:30, 30 min before they close. The problem there is that they were out of large fresh pies (frozen only). But I am single and I was happy to try multiple flavors of the small fresh pies. Unfortunately, they were out of buffalo chicken and salmon! Bummer . I went with meat, pork and chili. Don't sleep on the chili! It was delicious. Pork too! Meat was ok. The big surprise at Hartley's is the price on baked goods. Sick of inflation? Try Hartley's! Cupcakes are $1.50. Big brownies are $2.00. The list goes on. We once said til death do us Partleys But that was way back at the Startleys For awhile, was pretending But I knew it was ending When she didn't like pork pies at Hartley's I had been to New England many times, but I had Hartley noticed all the great places in Fall River, and you can Hartley say you've been to New England until you come and get authentic British pork pies at Hartley's. It's hard not to love Hartley pork pie shop. I loved Pork Pies ever since I was a little kid. It's not the kind of thing I would ever get into now because I try not to eat processed meats but back in the day I was a big muncher of these things and whenever I go back to England if I am near one of the great places such as Melton Mowbray - the town that invented them - then I will definitely sample a few. There are some truly spectacular ones around England. It's a product that is phenomenal on every level. So Hartley's. These ones are nowhere near the best I've had but they are definitely near enough the best I've had in America and there is something to be said about that. Not to mention that the older woman working here is one of the friendliest people I've encountered in all of New England and they have quite a good variety. She was so eager for me to try some different stuff that she literally gave me extra pies and insisted that I give them a go. I enjoyed every bite especially the one with the hot gravy. I had Hartley's Pork Pies bookmarked for a long time and on our recent visit to Fall River we decided to check them out. What a little gem! These are the kind of places I love about visiting Fall River!!! We walked into this small store front on a busy street (plenty of nearby parking) and were greeted by a lovely woman behind the counter. We told her it was our first visit and she was happy to fill us in on the details of the store. They specialize in pork pies, but they have many other kinds...beef, chicken, chourico etc. They have full size as well as mini pies. Cooked up or ready to cook. They also have a small case of baked goods and one of their specialties is carrot cake we were told (next time). We decided on trying the original pork pie already cooked and it came with a side of gravy. We also decided to try 2 raspberry turnovers. Prices are very reasonable here. The pork pie was $7. and the turnovers were $1. a piece....total came to $9.! We ended up heating the pork pie the next night for dinner and it was delicious! Wow not only is this place historic, cute, fairly priced, and convenient... it's almost pure deliciousness packed in each pie. I tried the pork pie, meat pie, and buff chicken and like them in that order. The traditional pie was so perfect you have to get it. The dough is crusty and holds the meat well, but crumbles perfectly with each bite. The gravy is watery, but somehow perfect for the pie? I would maybe ask for extra on my mini. The meat is dense, fresh, and just right. It's almost like a sausage in there but not overly spiced, just pork salt and pepper. It's a dense patty of meat inside. The meat pie is much lighter inside, more spiced as well. It is beef, pork and mashed potatoes blended into a whip almost. Very good but just get the pork. The buff was ok, I'm more a traditionalist. The small pies are 2.25 and 2 is plenty for lunch. They give you the pork with gravy which is an absolute must. The reallll steal here is the frozen family sized pie for 7$. It's enough to feed 3-4 well and it bakes perfectly. They give you a huge cup of frozen gravy which warms up so perfectly. The carrot cake was huge and very carroty which I loved. It's truly small. If a line formed with three people, the last one would be outside. But, it's a joy. These are small pies, almost a perfect three inch cylinder, look almost identical, fork impressions on the rim, a tiny stream hole in the top. What to pick?I love chili so my pick had a red tinge. Chicken is yellow, beef darker. Warmed either in a microwave or oven, they are irresistible. Dense, filling, satisfying. If you live on the North shore, there's Thwaites in Methuen. Yelp and Trip Advisor reviewers loved this place, so we had to try it. We travel from Northern Vermont to the Rhode Island seashore 4-5 times a year. Having a meal ready to go when we arrive at either place is a real convenience. If there are fresh pies , we get one or two. We always buy a few frozen also. We come with a cooler and wether frozen or fresh, they are ready from the oven in 45- 60 minutes. This gives us time to unpack, toss a salad, pour the wine and presto, fantastic dinner. My favorite pie here is filled with Salmon . Our families love the chicken. Our neighbors love the pork. The pies are chock full of delicious meat. The pork was very tender and flavorful. As for the buffalo chicken pies, they are also very delicious. However, I would suggest getting the individual ones, as the larger ones dry out easily. I just wish they would ship their pies! For years, we've driven from Baltimore to the Cape overnight to avoid traffic. Hartley's changed all of that. We now time our bi-annual trip north to arrive at Hartley's at mid-morning. I dream of the chorizo mini pies, and my husband dreams of the buffalo chicken and the chorizo. We were not overwhelmed by the pork pie, but to be fair, we had it several days after purchase and without the sauce. I'll have to try it fresh next time. Pastry and its filling are important parts to making a good pie. Hartley's excel at both. Filling wise, the pork is flavourful without being at all too fatty. They also had a large case of desserts that were insanely cheap. $1.00 for a cupcake?? $2.50 for a container of bread pudding? So worth it. I've only tried the famous pork mini pie so far. So I had to always wanted to go to the store because I do love a good meat pie and we had the opportunity as we took a ride out to Tiverton and back on a nice day. I was not happy though to see that at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic they were not being socially distant and socially aware. I had to wait outside until the store was empty before I could go in and feel comfortable purchasing anything. They had a nice selection of pastries and puddings and pork pie and meat pie. The meat pies come in single serve size as well as the regular 9 or 10 inch pie size. We took home two of the large pies and put them in the freezer as we were stocking for the future. But after a few days we did take one out and heated up because we couldn't wait. It was absolutely delicious and very much what I remember my great-aunt making when I was younger. We also tried the rice pie and bread pudding and those were pretty good as well but I would definitely return the just for the meat pies. read more

I came here the other day and was amazed at their low prices. We bought 2 large pies and 3 little pies and it only came to $23! There is no seating space inside so you can tell that this is a business catered to the people who want to take everything to go. I tried the buffalo chicken pie and it was delicious! I had it cold and it was really good. Not too spicy, but I could still tell that it was buffalo chicken. I would definitely go back and get some more and I would heat them up this time because I bet they're even better warm. I can't really complain about Hartley's, they make pork pies, come on, in the USA trying to find a decent pork pie is tough, its all a matter of taste, depending on where you are from in the UK you will have your own idea of what a pork pie should look and taste like. I find the ones at Hartley's to have a decent crust, the pork and the pastry is a little too dry and the meat way too grey, i'm used to pies from Lishman's in Ilkley Yorkshire where they are undoubtedly the best in the world (again, personal taste!) so i'm not the best person to really judge, once you've had the best, everything else is just a poor imitation! Parking is easy as there's a lot next to the building, its very easy to find as its on the main street. The shop has been there for decades, and the pie presses i believe came from Huddersfield West Yorkshire, so i'm partial to that being i grew up only 7 miles away! The girls in the shop are awesome, very friendly and always happy to see you, one of the old guys, not so much, but one sour puss didn't tarnish my view on Hartley's, they are doing a great job. read more
