my boyfriend and I recently visited the Harpoon Windsor VT brewery while we were on vacation in Burlington VT, and we came from Buffalo NY. We drove about an hour and a half to get there which took us longer than we anticipated. As we pulled up to the brewery at 5:25 pm, we were very excited. We were greeted at first by the hostess of the restaurant. We asked her about the brewery tours, which we thought went on until 9pm.The hostess told us that the tours ended at 5pm and we had just missed the last one of the day. We asked the hostess how long the tours went on for and what they entailed. She told us that they normally run about an hour. We told the hostess that we had just drove an hour and a half to get there, and that we really wanted to do the tour. We were hoping that she would maybe be able to get us into the second half of the tour since they still had a half an hour left. We were willing to pay whatever, we just really wanted to see the brewery. Instead of trying to compensate us, she told us that we could come back the next day, or go to the one in Boston! At this point, we were very disappointed that we drove through the mountains to just come and have dinner. Either way, we stayed. We were seated in the restaurant, then greeted by a very young and snippy little waitress. We asked her about the sampler beers, which she said were already predetermined. We have gone to many breweries, and the majority of them let you choose the beers you would like to taste. This waitress was extremely un-enthusiastic about their beer selection which made us not really care what she brought out. We ordered two samplers, the waitress threw two sheets of paper on the table, and told us very briefly, what the names of each sample was. We felt very out of place and unwelcome in this restaurant. We ordered an appetizer of wings, half Buffalo style and half BBQ. The waitress said this would be fine. She brought the wings out, and said that the restaurant was out of BBQ sauce, so she had them do the wings all in buffalo sauce which was dripping off of the wings. My boyfriend is a chef, and I have also been in the restaurant business for quite some time now. As I recall, you NEVER make a customer's decision for them. Also, how could a huge place like this not have any BBQ sauce?? There was pulled pork on the menu, and there was also an option of teriyaki sauce! We then ordered two cheeseburgers medium rare. The cheese was barely melted on the burger and was not the cheddar cheese we ordered. The burger was ok, but was still too rare and it was barely seasoned. The waitress came over once to see how we were doing, and was rushing us to finish. At this point of our night, all we wanted to do was get the hell out of this brewery. We were so incredibly disappointed with our trip toHarpoon brewery. They need to find some new staff for their restaurant business, who are passionate about the beers, are informative, and make you feel like you want to be there....especially when you miss the brewery tour!! This was the most uptight brewery we have ever gone to, and we will never go back, or even buy Harpoon beer anymore. We have heard many good things about the actual tour, however, it would be great for their business to try and compensate people who have traveled quite a ways to come and visit, if they are late. We understand that we were late, however, we thought we were going to make it in time from Burlington, and we thought that there website said that the brewery was open until 9pm which was misleading. This was one of the worst experiences we have ever had, and thought that the restaurant service is a terrible reflection of their brewery. I would only encourage you to visit the brewery and save yourself the frustration of driving through the mountains to eat a terrible meal and be treated like crap!! read more
