We found this sushi place here on Yelp. I checked in on the Yelp waitlist. The hostess where great, we got seated before your waitlist quote time. Mr Lee was our server, I was expecting better service according to the posted reviews that raved about the service which is why I chose the restaurant. Our service was slow, it took a long while to get our drinks, then appetizer than food, however our child's order came our prompt which is why we left somewhat of a decent tip. We ordered the Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris and James Bomb. everything was delicious! Great Job Chef's!! I am a firm believer that you don't go out to eat unless you can tip properly. I let them know we where at dinner to celebrate (2) Birthday's and there was no birthday dessert given or even a Happy Birthday mentioned. Been here a few times. I enjoyed dining at the Old Town location too. Love the environment and reggae music. With so many options of Sushi joints to eat, Harney Sushi is not one of my faves. Check in for Free Edamame. I had the garlic minus the manchego. Hmmm strange flavor that i barely touched it. Had the spicy tuna roll and the mixed tempura. The roll was good but nothing outstanding. I'll quality that by saying I been entertaining surgeons for work for 10 years and everyone I bring here walks away a believer...and I give them incredibly high expectations. Note...I've never been at dinner and I never order off the menu. I eat at the bar at lunch. I ask for Miguel and ask him what sounds good today... not in the menu. I visited there last weekend Sunday, we can call it the homeless episode in downtown Oceanside 1,100 time! I have been to this restaurant many times, I'm a South Oceanside resident never ceases to surpass expectations, nice fresh fish, very good place for a date or just a casual lunch or a special occasion with family. Back to this character who walked in appeared to be homeless on something, was putting his head all over the bar and moving around in a very erratic way to put it mildly. The manager David Soraci and bartender Marshall handle is very well, and carefully monitored his behavior of course I'll be back again. We can't let these people keep us and the business owners from doing what we like to do and that's enjoying life in downtown Oceanside! We own this city not them! read more

Have always loved this place, great food and great location. However, the service has started to decline. It is small things like dirty napkins or not being able to find our waiter when we need soy sauce because it was not given to us. But this place used to have amazing service! I heard something about them switching owners a while back, so maybe that is the problem. I love the food so I usually just do takeout now, but I would love to see the service improve. read more

I love this restaurant and normally I don't write reviews but while I was eating dinner tonight something made me uneasy about this place. I've seen past reviews of this place saying that the coworkers are not very nice to each other, today I witnessed our server yell at the bartender on two occasions, and it looked like the manager had to stand in between them to break it up the second time. The bartender looked really flustered and we felt really bad for her. It ruined the vibe of our dinner and was extremely unprofessional to watch. She wasn't very nice to us either but from the last reviews I've seen and now seeing this, it makes me think this place has a toxic work environment that is now affecting customers too, and should be addressed. First time here, and the food was so delicious! Our waitress Maddie was spectacular, she really went above and beyond for us. I'm not sure how but they forgot that we ordered fried rice instead of the regular white rice. She spoke to her manager for us and they didn't charge us for it still gave us the fried rice. she checked on us regularly and was very personable. It's pretty dim inside and they play R&B/alternative music pretty loudly, which I just wasn't in the mood for, but I can see how it would appeal to young people during a night out! I ordered the Shaolin Dragon and it tasted like diluted lemonade, which it kind of is, but I would have preferred it a bit stronger and sweeter. I believe one of the sangrias also wasn't sweet enough, but our hostess was more than happy to bring it back and add some syrup into it. The hot sake was very fragrant and a good complement to the food. We ordered albacore and salmon sashimi, shishito peppers, sashimi plate, the Baked Dynamite, Rollz Royce, Sea Spider, and the Culichi Wa rolls. Everything was plated neatly and in an appealing way. The albacore sashimi was decent, in a soy-based sauce. The salmon sashimi came with a sweet chili sauce, which was surprising but very yummy. Baked Dynamite roll was pretty standard but I appreciated that the scallops were plump and tender, not overbaked at all. The Sea Spider roll was probably my favorite. The softshelled crab wasn't overshadowed by the spicy crab or the sea bass, and the combination of flavors made for a bite that was interesting to eat. Oh My Goodness! My new favorite sushi spot in SD! I don't know if we just got lucky and ordered all the best sushi rolls on the menu, but of the 4 we got were so delicious. Got here at noon on a Saturday? Parking wasn't an issue and the place was larger than most sushi spots. Lots of seating, a bar and some TV's. Customer service was good. Friendly and we were checked on a few times during the meal. The sushi seemed to take a little long to get to our table, after ordering, but it was so worth the wait. The rolls were so tight, so fresh and so full of flavor. Each bite had at least 5 different flavors all working so well together. We ordered the Ana, Bruce Lee, Culichi Wa and Sea Spider rolls. The Ana roll was our favorite of the meal. All were very good but Ana stood out a little more. Originally I was concerned about the long drive to get some sushi, but this place was worth a drive from San Diego. I will definitely be back here. read more

You never get a second chance to make a first impression. We are vacationing in Oceanside and a friend recommended this restaurant. I ordered carry out and there was a 1 hr wait (no biggie). When I arrived to pick up my order an hour later they hadn't even started preparing my food. I was told maybe 7 more minutes so we left and came back about 15 minutes later at which time I was told that my order had been picked up. Needless to say, I told the gentleman that I had just met minutes earlier that I had NOT received my 90$ order and I either needed my order or a refund. He confirmed they had made a mistake and would make my food right then. The manager was apologetic and gave me a complimentary glass of water while I waited for my food (again). I finally received my order after a 2 hr ordeal. I wish I could say it was worth the wait, but to add insult to injury, the food is mediocre. The gyoza are almost 2$ EACH and no better than the bag at Costco. We definitely won't go back. read more

I've been coming to Harneys for about 13 years now and it's always been my #1 sushi spot. Within the last couple of years I have been specifically going on Monday's and Thursday's because that's when my favorite bartender/server Dustin works. Dustin goes above and beyond to take care of myself and my friends when we come in. He's always smiling and making sure we have a good time. We literally stay at Harneys for at least 3-5 hours when Dustin is there. I also have to mention Vince is the best sushi chef there and he's extremely talented with how he presents the sushi. It's almost too beautiful to eat! Tony and Marcus are also great guys that always make sure my friends and I are taken care of when we go. Harneys is so lucky to have all of these guys and besides the food and drinks, they are the main reason why I go there 1-2 times a week. I've been here twice now since moving to Oceanside. The first time was on a Friday night and they had a dj and it was so loud. I couldn't hear a single person at my table. Fun but not ideal if you're just there for dinner. There was a lot of confusion this night because the table runner kept bringing our stuff to the wrong table so the table would say they didn't want it or order it and then it would get canceled on our order and they'd say "oh she said you didn't want it anymore" after it was never even brought to us. The second night we were sat right next to a kiosk area which I'm assuming is where they keep cleaning supplies cause all we smelt our whole meal was cleaning chemicals. The food All their different edamame flavors are amazing. Especially the truffle. The chicken fried rice is good however not consistent because I ordered this the first time and had so many generous pieces of egg and chicken and it was amazing. The second night had no egg and barely any chicken. Didn't even bother to take it to go. The portion is very big to share though so that's nice. We've tried many sushi rolls so far and all have been good! However if a roll comes with the imitation krab and Real crab and you ask for only the real crab they charge you $6 to have something that was already in the roll to begin with. We were just asking to leave something out. Overall it's a good sushi spot. read more

We were so excited to go to Harney because we have not been in such a long time. Unfortunately a lot has changed. It was extremely hot inside in addition to being very noisy. The rolls were subpar and the drinks we ordered did not even match the description. I ordered a lychee martini and got what tasted like a lemon drop. When I asked the waiter if they had made a mistake he said no they are out of lychees and low on lychee juice so they had to substitute Lemon juice. Well then it's not a lychee martini. Sushi was subpar and we received our rolls before our appetizers. That wasn't the worst part. The table behind us had a party of six sitting at it. One of the gentleman all of a sudden stood up and went running across the floor. When I looked down I saw that he was chasing a huge cockroach which he proceeded to step on. We visited this place when it just opened many years ago. The food was great but pricey. We decided to try it again Saturday 6/22/24. We arrived around 6:30. Since the place was packed we took a table outside. The place is beautiful and the location is great, however it's very noisy inside and the outside area is even worse. Servers were nice but the service was poor. We got three rolls and a 15 piece nigiri chef's selection. The food took a long time, and when it finally arrived we didn't have plates or utensils. We even have to ask for soy and wasabi. The rolls were good enough however the 15 pieces nigiri was terribly disappointing for the price (around 48$) The fish was slimy and the shrimp was disgusting to the point I had to spit it out. We eat sushi on a regular basis and this place has been the worst I've tried in Oceanside. I'd recommend Waraii Sushi, we take advantage of the Happy hour. Our favorite is the boat, a great selection for a fair price... And the fish is delicious and FRESH always. read more

Eating here might have been better if Covid weren't around, however, my experience last night was not the best. When I called to see if there was a long wait time the person who answered was not very friendly and very standoffish. I proceeded to go to the restaurant any way. When I arrived we were sat outside and told indoor seating was unavailable even though there was a group of friends dining inside as the hostess told me this. And later on when I went to use the restroom, another family was seated indoors... is there a special fee for this? I'm not sure but it didn't make any sense. The hostess then seated us outside. However, we weren't seated in their patio bc there wasn't any available tables. Instead we were seated on the side walk of the street. This would have been fine if the general public including a few homeless and skateboarders weren't constantly running, skating, and walking through the eating area. I wish the section would have been blocked off but my guess is that they were not allowed to since it was technically the side walk. We were about to leave before receiving any service but our kind waitress Katie was the reason we felt more comfortable and ended up staying. She was very friendly and sweet and she made me feel less tense being there. I had the Ana roll and the gyoza appetizer which I think were fantastic and I definitely recommend them both. The service was great, the restaurant was clean, and the food was good so that's my reason for the 3 stars. Other than that I don't think I'll be returning. Drove here after spending an afternoon at Carlsbad State Beach. I was craving sushi for dinner and when I searched the area by rating, this place came up as being open on a Monday at 4 with great sushi reviews so decided to drive a bit further and give it a try. So glad I did! I read a bunch of good reviews about the specialty nigiris so I knew I wanted to try a bunch of those. My husband is usually not big on plain fish and prefers rolls so I got a few rolls too. Ordering for pickup online through their website was super easy. Our order was ready early and it was a super easy pickup. Everything was packed well, all the rolls and nigiri were labeled, and we got plenty of the sauces that they paired with certain rolls and nigiri along with the normal soy sauce, wasabi and ginger. When we got home, we started with the nigiris and when we finished my husband said he didn't even want to try the rolls and wished we had gotten more! They were all so fresh and so tasty. If we had to rank the nigiri, we couldn't. We'd get every single one again without hesitation. We got the Mellow Yellow, the Final Bite, the Nicole, the Yellowtail, and the octopus. The nigiri beat all the rolls, but the rolls were excellent too and not as heavy as we expected them to be based on sight. To rank the rolls: 1) Diablo (this one was suuuuuper spicy and came with a yummy -also spicy -sauce for dipping. Without the sauce, this one wouldn't have come in #1) 2) Rolls Royce (also came with a dipping sauce, and was great with or without it. This one looked spicier than the Diablo because of the jalapeño slices on top but it wasn't actually as spicy) 3) James Bomb (perfect crunch on the outside and not too heavy despite the cream cheese and sauce) All the rolls were really good and we had full bellies (couldn't finish our food) but if we were to order again we would get more nigiri and try a few new rolls because it seems like this is one of those places where everything is good and we'd want to see if any of the other rolls on the menu give the specialty nigiri a run for their money We will definitely be back read more
