We had an amazing experience at Harney Sushi in Oceanside! Our server, Natalie, was fantastic--friendly, attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed throughout our meal. One of the things that really stood out was their incredible selection of vegetarian and vegan options. We usually never see this many vegan/vegetarian sushi rolls on a menu, so it was such a pleasant surprise. We ordered the Vegan OG (our absolute favorite!), the Garden Delight, a Teriyaki Chicken Bowl, and the Vegetarian Fried Rice--which was delicious and full of flavor. Everything tasted fresh and beautifully prepared. The atmosphere was vibrant and fun, with unique decor that made the dining experience feel lively and memorable. If you haven't tried Harney in Oceanside ... you're missing out. As pescatarians and self-dubbed "sushi aficionados," my wife and I can honestly say their sushi is some of the best. It's harmonious, it's fresh, it's everything you want sushi to be. The sashimi is also to die for ... and every time we've dined here, we've consistently had a five star experience. The service is also extremely attentive and the food seems to come out very quickly, but not rushed, just as delicate as ever! There are so many wonderful menu options to choose from, it's really hard to limit yourself to just one roll or entree! It's best to approach this restaurant "family style," so everyone can share a bit of everything. The unlawful albacore sashimi was one of my favorites of the evening, along with a modest, but deliciously powerful cucumber salad! The Miso Harney is a CLASSIC, but the Culichi Wa is where it's at! Don't sleep on the Orange Crush roll, the eel hand rolls, or the salmon kama starter either! MAJOR win points for their expansive vegan sushi section, which we branched out to tonight for the first time ... and were not disappointed with the Vegan O-Sider roll! It was really good and unique! This place is great for solo, dates, or small groups. There's something for everyone, even non-fish people. Parking in the "beach city" area can be tricky, so give yourself some time to find a good spot! Service was really really friendly and attentive. From the first touch point at the host stand, to the bartender, to the server. Harney also seems to have a full bar, as opposed to some Japanese restaurants that only offer sake and a limited selection of Japanese beers. I live locally and used to order from here often, but unfortunately the quality and service have declined significantly over the past couple of years. Tonight confirmed that this will be my last time ordering. I ordered the vegan Osider roll, and the Beyond Meat inside was visibly pink and undercooked. Beyond Meat should be fully cooked and browned, not raw or pink in the center. This was extremely disappointing and honestly unacceptable from a food safety standpoint. The avocado and avocado cucumber rolls were also very poorly made, with minimal filling and mostly rice, as shown in the photos. For the price, the portions and quality were far below standard. Service has also been consistently unprofessional. In the past, I've experienced slow service when dining in, and during one phone order, staff laughed and hung up mid-conversation. Even with online ordering, the overall experience remains disappointing. This restaurant has potential and used to be a reliable local spot, but it now feels poorly managed, with declining food quality and service that does not match the prices being charged. Made reso for V-day at 8:45p. Used to live here and always try to hit this place up when i visit. Last night was a miss. Rice was off, shrimp tempura was cold and soggy, and rolls didnt even look nor taste like normal. Not sure if place is slipping or it was a just a bad night and everyone was getting lazy towards end of a busy night. Service was also not great, deliver food with no wasabi or ginger, wait like 10 min + before anyone is even in the room to ask for it, eventually just asked someone else's server. This is a great local downtown Oceanside spot for sushi. They have more traditional offering, but also very creative ones as well. I'm a big fan of their Ana roll. It has the tempura shrimp and the soy paper. I also love the nigiri and we always get the spicy garlic edamame and the spicy tuna crispy rice. They are so flavorful and the spicy tuna crispy rice has a good mix of crunch and spice. Other solid choices are the Culichi Wa Roll and the Diablo roll. We have also tried the salmon filet made with capers, lemon and a garlic butter sauce served with mashed potatoes, and asparagus. Pretty good as well. read more

Definitely a fun restaurant with options outside of just sushi! Their sushi options are very fusion, with a lot of creme cheese, but overall most are really great. I love to make reservations ahead of time as they can get quite busy suddenly, but if you go early enough you can almost always just be seated. While I love their drinks at their speakeasy, The Lounge, they have their own wonderful drinks in-house too. I loved the lychee gimlet! I would go here for that cocktail alone. So refreshing and lightly tart but not overly sweet either. I do suggest going during happy hour as their happy hour drink and food list is great. Great way to try a lot of different appetizers. We loved the spicy tuna crispy rice. Just a lot of flavor packed into the tuna and the perfect crisp to the rice was just the best combo. We enjoyed the salmon skin hand roll too, but the spicy tuna crispy rice is a must! We did split 3 different rolls, and my husband had one extra. We started out with the pirate roll, the culichi-wa, and lightning. My absolute favorites were the pirate roll and lightning roll. Both just had so much flavor packed into each bite, along with delicious faux-Nagi sauce. I enjoyed the culichi-wa roll too, but not as much as the other two. The mango salsa on the culichi-wa roll was perfect though. My husband had the James bomb roll too. Fried rolls are not for me, but he liked it! He liked our other rolls more, but this one was still good. I thought the mayo made it feel like there was even more cream cheese, but for those that love cream cheese in rolls, this is perfect! Ended the night with some green tea mochi. Didn't realize it would be mochi ice cream, but it was still good. Had a great dinner at Harney O-Side the evening of Memorial Day. Our daughter got bused to the train station from Irvine and we were looking for some good food. Harney's wasn't too busy so we dived in. We were seated fairly quickly, but then we sat and sat with no water, no server, for maybe 15 minutes. After 15 minutes twiddling our thumbs, I told my wife and daughter that if no one showed up within 5 minutes, we were outta there. A minute or two later, water arrived, and a couple minutes after that, our server. As it turned out, our server Natalie was great -- I guess Harney's was understaffed because of the holiday. We ordered lots of food and drinks right away in case the kitchen was slow, but our food and drinks started coming out pretty quick. Sake, beer, spicy garlic edamame, hamachi kama, crispy orange tofu, sushi rolls, and nigiri. The food was excellent, and my wife appreciated that LARGE vegan menu. Throughout, Natalie checked in with us and made sure we were happy. Overall, a great experience once we got past that first 15 minutes of nothing. Docked 1 point for that. read more

Great sushi, unhappy servers. Crab rangoons are good but don't have a whole lot of cream cheese within them. Wanted the baked mussels but got the marinated mussels, guess I should have clarified that with the waitress but she didnt ask. Ate them anyway but didnt love the flavor. The sushi on the other hand was fantastic, both the flaming lip and baked scallop roll were just what I wanted and made perfectly. Another visit I had tried the spicy garlic edamame and spider roll, both made very well. Service wasn't great for either visit. The attitude would almost be described as "whatever, I don't care". You cant tell who works there and who doesn't because they don't have a specific dress code or even name tags, I also don't think I've ever been to a restaurant where the workers don't wear nonslip shoes. Not that its an issue, just surprised to see heels and converse coming in and out of the kitchen. The sushi here was amazing! I came with a friend and loved the fresh, high-quality fish. Service was great, though our sharing plates came out dirty at first (quickly fixed when we asked). I felt a little rushed by the server at times, but the dine-in experience was still lovely -- so much so that I ended up ordering takeout later because I couldn't stop craving it. I went all in with the crab and cream cheese wontons, the Flaming Lip Roll, and the Protein Roll. Yes, I was that hungry. I was a little unsure at first whether to order directly from the sushi chefs or wait for the server but of course it all worked out smoothly. Harney's is a solid option for sushi lovers. It's conveniently located with a menu that includes some reasonably priced choices. The place is clean and can be a great date spot or family dining option. I've been around long enough to remember when this place was known as Miso Harney Sushi, then Harney Sushi. Now it's called Harney Lounge, and I am glad they took "sushi" out of their name because the sushi mostly sucks here. We came as a party of 3; my husband does not eat sushi so I ordered him the filet mignon while our friend and I ordered appetizers, sushi, and a Mongolian beef plate. The filet was cooked perfectly and fork-tender, and dare I say, better than the steaks we've been getting at 333 and for a fraction of the price. I really enjoyed the calamari sticks, fried wontons and the monkey brains. I opted to not order any sushi myself because nothing caught my eye: everything was heavily sauced, or had cheap ingredients like fried shrimp. We did share some nigiri that was fresh; I am not sure which ones he chose. The Mongolian beef was a huge portion and shareable; the sauce was too sweet for my preference. The menu range itself is LARGE; sushi to bentos to Chinese dishes, vegan and beyond. Literally, there is something for everyone. Our server was incredible! Our friend is clinically OCD and a germaphobe; our waitress sensed his distress and was able to calm him down with her sweet demeanor and words. Anything from tables being too close to not having certain napkins will frazzle him, and she was patient and humorous while helping our group. I am forever grateful to her. We came on a Sunday before the crowds; it was just getting loud as we left. Overall, we definitely want to return and order the steak again! Nothing special at all. My whole service got backpacked by one roll, Ana's roll. I arrived very hungry and at about 4:00pm was when I walked in and nobody was there to greet me. No worries it is 4pm that makes sense I am early. Then about 4:15 I get seated at my table. Server comes by, no greeting nothing. Can I get you a drink. Okay. I guess this is a very casual restaurant like Chili's. I order my drink along with some food as well mentioning it is my first time here and I just moved in the area . Then as he is walking away I ask if they have a seaweed salad. "Yes" and then he added it. Would be nice if he asked, "just seaweed? You want anything on it krab avocado cucumber? Right there was the opportunity to make me feel as I am in good hands. So bad first impression. Then I get Ana's roll after the mediocre seaweed salad. Wow! Let me tell you. That is a phenomenal sushi roll. So much different flavors all in one bite. Almost brought a tear to my eye it was so freaking good! Then I get the chef's special sashimi platter. Oh my god. Absolutely rancid. My favorite is sashimi and all of them were quite bad. It was albacore salmon tuna and yellowtail. And they were all slimy and fishy and so bad. After taking just a few bites I let my server know he could take them away. And he asked if I wanted it boxed up. I said no. He picked it up and left. Uhhhh maybe ask what was wrong with it. Whatever. I order more food. I get the garlic edamame and seared tuna. Edamame was really quite good. Seared tuna was decent. Then I got my check. Paid $50 for a shitty service and a shitty chef sashimi but the fact that both those things were so bad will not bring me back here. When those two things are so easily fixable. TLDR: You don't know how to serve You have decent food but lack in substantial areas. ( service x raw fish) And I heard my server was also the manager or bar manager. The miso soup tasted authentic, the edamame was perfectly steamed, and the cucumber salad was the best I've ever had. My favorite, though, was the tofu crunch roll -- absolutely incredible! Love this place and have been coming here for years everytime we visit Oceanside. Super easy to make a reservation online, but if you have a small group, you probably won't need it. Parking can be difficult down here, so you may want to take that and take consideration. The spicy garlic edamame is a must! Some of our favorite rolls are the En Fuego, O Sider, and Sassy salmon. Neither of us liked the Pirate roll. If you like nicer cuts of sushi, the toro is FANTASTIC. Service can be slow but the food is definitely worth it. read more

I had this place bookmarked for probably a few years now and I don't even remember why but was in the area and thought I must try it especially with so many great reviews! Well I was a bit disappointed to say the least. The place feels a little run down even for a "lounge" it's not giving lounge vibes. The seats and tables scream casual bar vibes. Then the sushi was ok. Not the freshest fish I've had and though portions are huge for the rolls it's overfilled with rice :/ bummer. The artwork looks cool and fun on the walls. The service was ok. The waitress was very sweet but not too attentive. I asked for several things several times and sometimes ended up not receiving it. And it was things like napkins and water nothing extreme. She did have a large party she was attending to but still. Wouldn't go here for the sushi maybe the vibes are different on different days. We were there on a Sunday evening. The host asked "how can I help you?" Like who asks that as a host? You usually ask "How many will be dining with us tonight?" For example. The server rushed us the entire time. Hands down one of the best sushi experiences we've had. We stepped away from the menu and fully trusted Angelo, and he absolutely nailed it. His recommendation of the yellowtail sashimi, the sake, and the appetizers were all perfect--he clearly knows the menu inside and out. Angelo worked seamlessly with Ben, the sushi chef, who brought out incredible off-menu items that were unbelievably fresh and clean. We even told them how we wanted to feel after eating, and Ben adjusted the nigiri for me since I didn't want too much rice--spot on. Can't recommend this place, or Angelo and Ben, enough.
