Excellent café! The food was delicious! It has been quite a while since we stopped in to this hardware store and café. The yummy savory smells coming from the kitchen drew us in for lunch. Masking and social distancing is in force here, we were very pleased with that. My wife had the chicken salad sandwich and veggies too. Delicious! I had the spicy chicken Panini with a side of color cheese. That was some of the best kind of cheese I've ever had! The business owner made her rounds and we were very pleased when she asked us if we were comfortable and not too drafty. Although we didn't purchase anything other than food, we were impressed with the store. read more

Pros: Super charming place! Friendly young gentleman behind the counter, some lovely artisan-crafted earrings. Cons: The food and service were not good. My husband's Eggs Benedict had HARD BOILED EGGS in it and tasted disgusting. The Greek omelette looked decent, but nothing in it tasted fresh. Table service was not good. This is a cute and quaint shop/cafe with a very small-town atmosphere-limited indoor seating (seat yourself), lots of "merch" of the town itself, it gives off the vibe that everyone knows everyone (maybe they do?). It's themed like an old country store, which I think it was once way back when. I've included some pictures. Broad selection of coffees, teas, etc. They are a bit pricey, but nothing more than a Starbucks latte. Food is priced fair. I've added pictures of what we got. The pancakes I got were huge, they were like actual little cakes. They were slightly undercooked, which I like, but just a warning to others in case. Nikita, my friend and her fiance loved their food and raved about it on the drive back. Perhaps I am not ordering the right things-the past two times I've gone, I haven't been mind blown. Service could be friendlier, and our bill was charged incorrectly. All in all an okay experience in a cute town with decent food. Absolutely loved this place for lunch. Sitting in the quaint village of Fairhaven, it is on the Main Street and has it's own parking lot. This is a combination gift shop-restaurant. Very cool vibe here. We ordered a vegetable stew (thickened with quinoa), a vegetable hummus wrap and a tomato cheese panini. Both sandwiches were served with chips. Both sandwiches and soup were magnificent and we took a half of the wrap home. Bathrooms are spotless! I imagine this place can be very crowded in season, but we were able to get a socially distanced table on Sunday at lunch time. The drive out there is beautiful and we expect to return. read more

My boyfriend and I stopped at the place while we were on our way to the Ren Fest in Sterling. This wasn't planned, we just saw some place to grab breakfast and we checked it out. Boy, were we totally suprised. The charm of this place is absolutely unbelievable. It had the feel of an old country store. We really didn't browse around that much. Unfortunately, we didn't have a lot of time to spare. The food was amazing. They serve these sausage patties that were out of this world. If you love sausage, you gotta do the patties. I had an omelette that was filling and tasty. He had french toast that was so good. Once again, he refused to share. One down fall, they ran out of home fries. What is it with me and going to places that run out of home fries? Man, I love me some potato product. The service was great. They were friendly, swift and on point. Staying in Fair Haven for a long weekend and am so happy to have found a little coffee spot! Located right in town and an easy walk from where we were staying, I've gone two consecutive days and will definitely be returning a third. Being transparent, I can only assess the coffee - but saw they had a decent sized menu (breakfast lunch and dinner) and dinner specials. They have a walk up coffee bar and on the other side walk up ice cream bar. My biggest coffee shop requirement is availability of non-dairy milk, and they have almond milk (pacific farms for those who have preferences) which is one of my favorites. I ordered a large iced coffee and it was delicious! Today I realized they have different coffee flavors for the iced coffee (most places I go to at home only have one "iced coffee" option) so will need to try another tomorrow. The coffee roaster is finger lakes coffee roasters! I'll update once I've tried another coffee blend. read more

I absolutely love this place. It has character, history, atmosphere, art and good food. My son and I stopped in after a chilly but sunny walk on the beach for something sweet. We ordered muffins. Excellent food. Excellent service. Must come back with time to shop. They have a beautiful gift shop with local artwork, souvenirs, jewelry, clothing, and a lot more. It's a must do if you are visiting the area. It very much captures the small town spirit this area embodies. Five stars. read more

I have eaten here twice- the first time I had a buffalo chicken sandwich. It was the worst sandwich I had ever had. This was 4 years ago, and I still gag thinking about it. It was obvious that the chicken was sitting in a crockpot and was so over cooked it was rubber. The second time I went I had breakfast. It was basic. Nothing special. My dad and I each drove an hour to meet in the middle at Hardware Cafe for Sunday breakfast, and it was totally worth it! Good atmosphere, good coffee. We both had Eggs Benedict (mine with spinach added) with home fries on the side. Eggs were poached perfectly; hollandaise sauce was tasty and on point; fries homemade, tender, and not greasy. Everything was so good that we had dessert too. The cherry-topped mini cheesecake was so good, homemade and not overly sweet, but the mixed berry pie was possibly even better. Super dense, real berries, homemade, not overly sweet. We were very happy. As mentioned, the atmosphere was great too - we sat at a booth in the window and watched Main St. All the old built-ins and architectural details of the old hardware store are cool too. We roll through Fair Haven every September on our annual bicycle trip up to the Thousand Islands area. We always stop at the Hardware Cafe to enjoy the food, good service and ambiance. I used to go there years ago when it was still a hardware store and when the building across the street housed a nice little family restaurant/diner. We were sad to see the restaurant close, like so many other businesses before it in the small, seasonal community of Fair Haven, so the Hardware Cafe is a welcome addition. BTW, the food is great! Every visit we've tried different items and have never been disappointed. The soups are homemade and not to be missed and the sandwich I had last week on fresh sourdough bread (maybe also homemade) was fantastic! I wish them success. I wish that there was a way to give half stars, because I'd go 3.5 stars here. But, I'm generous so they get a full four. In an area with incredibly limited options, hardware cafe is a breath of fresh air. The inside is cute and rustic and homey. They have the cafe as well as a little gift shop inside, most things representing the local area. What I love about their menu is that it offers options for people with gluten sensitivities and dairy issues, and vegetarians. Their menu is very much like a cafe, pastrys, beverages, quick breakfasts and some sandwiches. I had the chicken Monterey sandwich. The chicken inside was very dry. The chips on the side came out of a bag, and I got what was clearly the end of the bag, the little tiny pieces. It has great potential, and maybe I just ordered the wrong thing. read more

If you were looking for a little diamond in the rough, this is your go to stop. It's a hidden gem in a small village on the lake. The food is fantastic and the experience overall is wonderful, you can go in to an old world sit down, have a great meal and do a little shopping afterward. As always, the staff is friendly... the owner does like to make rounds, his approach can be a bit awkward at times , but overall, I'd suggest getting a bite to eat while passing though Fairhaven. read more

I want to give this place 5 stars because it's local but I just can't. Went here for lunch last Wednesday. Waited at the door for 15 minutes and were seated at a dirty table. Waited another 10 minutes for the table to be cleaned and 5 more after that to be handed menus. *they were not busy, there were 3 tables there* ordered drinks, everyone was handed the wrong one. Ordered food, two hotdogs, two muffins, one beef stew. Hotdogs were fine. Two double chocolate muffins (for kids ages 7 and 11) were disgusting. Listen, if kids that age won't eat double chocolate muffins, they are BAD. Beef stew was chewy, no liquid AT ALL and completely tasteless. Asked for bread with it, came with a grilled hamburger bun??? Had a cup of coffee that was never refilled. Waitress never checked on us after dropping off the food and asked if everything was ok 30 minutes later check in hand. Nope, was not very good at all. Food left uneaten. This would be a really nice place if the customer service was better. There's nothing worse than being ignored or treated like an imposition. A friendly greeting or smile goes a long way especially in the food industry. Are the employees really that unhappy or just poorly trained and overwhelmed? Being in that neck of the woods in Upstate NY, it's almost impossible to find an eatery that doesn't make you want to make a doctors appointment to have your arteries cleaned afterwards. Hardware Cafe is a unique little cafe in the very small town of Fair Haven along lake Ontario. Old hardware store converted into a little store ( beach items, shirts, kids stuff, etc.) as well as a cool little cafe serving soups, wraps, salads, paninis and such. Atmosphere is very unique and food is above average for around that area. Can I rave about it? Not really, but if you are a non greasy spoon eater and will do anything to avoid Franchise food... Not Family Friendly. We were suggested to go someplace else. We visited on a Saturday morning. Our visit was short - we left before ordering. We were greeted by a man in the door and were directed inside by the man after we were viewing an outside table. Once inside one table opened up. We went to sit at the table and the man told us he needed to clean the table. We had our 3 year old and a 3 month old in a car seat and felt in the way of other diners, so when the man proceeded to clean off another outside table that no one was waiting for before ours we decided to just sit down. The man came back and told us with irritation that he needed to clean the table but we didn't mind him cleaning it while we were seated. He then told us the baby in the car seat, (which we had placed on the floor because the booths were too narrow to accommodate it) was in the way and could have things spilled on the baby. He suggested to have a booster seat or high chair so we agreed thinking he would bring back a high chair that we could place upside down to set the car seat in (which most restaurants know about). The man brought us a booster seat. Since our baby is only 3 months old and cannot sit on her own yet, we told the man that the booster seat would not work. Trying to please the man and the restaurant, I picked up the sleeping baby out of the car seat (which woke her up, but she was quiet and happy) while my husband ran the car seat back out to the car. When the man came back he wanted to take our order, but we hadn't had time to look at the menu yet. The man seemed irritated that we only had a chance to offer our drink orders and he told us it would be 20 minute to get our food once the order was placed and that there was a diner a mile down the road we could go to instead. Our 3 year old is well behaved and sits quietly, colors, and does not whine. She has waited for food longer than 20 minutes and stays well behaved in restaurants so we didn't have a problem waiting. However, at this point, from the start we did not feel welcomed so we decided to leave. We felt unwanted because we had a child and a baby to accommodate. I'd like to believe the man had intentions of being helpful and nice to us, but we left feeling disappointed and not welcomed. read more
