We went to Robinson HW this morning to drop off our broken lawnmower for repair. Two employees took…read moreit upon themselves to remove our lawnmower from the back of my Lexus without our verbal consent. The manager of the repair department was present for the initial removal. He then went inside. When the employees placed the lawnmower on the ground, it was apparent that one of the employees had misjudged the distance from the car. My rear bumper received a huge gash, as a result of his negligence. One of the two employees was extremely contrite. The other was silent. The contrite employee went to get the manager. When the manager came back to us, he immediately stated " We are not responsible for loading or unloading any vehicles," although he said NOTHING when his employees were removing the lawnmower from my vehicle. When my wife went inside to deal with the paperwork for the lawnmower, the manager reiterated several times that the damage to my car was not Robinson Hardware's responsibility and refused to apologize. When my wife pressed him on his position he threatened to refuse service because she was giving him a "hard time." Now I have a $1,000 repair that's my responsibility.

I get my mowers and snow blower serviced at Robinson's in Framingham. They've always done great…read morework and return the equipment quickly. They also clean it! I have them pick-up and drop-off which is huge since I don't have a truck. It costs a little extra but is worth it. They even once picked up my girlfriend's grandparent's snow blower even though they are technically out of range. Now that's wanting to help! The service department is knowledgeable and friendly. I bought my Honda mower here, and will continue to support them any way I can. I have also rented a portable generator from the Hudson store when they didn't have it at Framingham, and they are just as awesome there! I love supporting this small business because they are so focused on helping me. That's hard to find at big box stores.

We wanted to buy them but couldn't fit them in our car and asked if we could come pick them up later. An employer offered to drop them off for us later in the day as he had a truck. I was amazed by his generosity. We were given a percentage off of the clearance price for our items and a couple hours later our furniture was dropped off at our house. We tried to give the employee money but he would not take it. This kind good deed really made us feel welcome in this city. So glad we moved here, and can't wait to continue to be a customer.

Scott and team not only know this business they are committed to serving. I've shared earlier stories and here is another. This past weekend I brought in a pair of garden shears I thought I'd lost and it turned out I left them in the garden all fall and winter. They were rusted beyond recognition and I was so embarrassed to bring them to Scott to see what was possible. Scott smiled as I showed him my buried treasure and asked if I had a few minutes to wait. With that he disappeared into his workshop with the rusted shears. Not even 10 minutes later Scott reappears with an even bigger smile. The shears are good as new and we both wish we had a before picture ( see the after picture below). So there we have it friends. Another memorable moment in my Vanderhoof Hardware journey. He told me he had them. I asked the price and told me that too. I went into the store and asked tine cashier where they were. She looked them up on the computer and told me aisle 3. I got them and went to pay. I liked that I didn't have to wait in line. Another cashier came to the front of the store and took me to pay. The person who answered the Hardware phone line checked the shelves in person, since I was driving in from a distance. "Yes, it was on the shelves", he said. Once in the store, a young employee asked me what I was looking for. When I told him, he said "the store did not carry that product." Fortunately I knew better, and told him that I already had verified that it was on the shelves somewhere. He walked away, leaving me to find it on my own, which I eventually did. If I had not verified it's presense, I would have driven home empty handed. Maybe this employee could use a little more training?

However, the pricing is extremely high compared to some other big box stores or ACE hardware locations outside of the city. I highly recommend using their order online for in store pickup for the best pricing since the store will follow the online pricing vs the shelf sticker price. Online orders come with a paper bag that has a handle which makes it nice and easy to carry out. There are two floors to the store, with the majority of home improvement things being on the lower level.

Colossal waste of time and energy to visit an dying store with surly staff in a sad strip mall…read more I hoped to rent a commercial-sized dehumidifier to dry my basement. Another rental place suggested Robinson's so I called. The person who answered the phone told me they had one available. I replied I was on my way. The parking lot was nearly empty. As I approached the front door, I noticed a sign saying "Please Push door." Odd, but whatever. So much for handicapped accessibility. I walked past plenty of clean, well-stocked shelves and thought, "this place is huge." I made my way to the rental counter in the back where I encountered a guy fixing a machine. I inquired about renting a dehumidifier and was told "it was out." Then his interrogation began. "Did you call?" "Yes." "Did you call this store or my store in Hudson?" "This one." I'd only called 30 minutes before. I don't have a photographic memory but I certainly remembered which location I called. "What number did you call?" "508-881-... "Who did you speak to?" "I don't know." The person didn't offer their name. "Well you'd better find out...We only have one and it's out." Really? I understand mistakes happen. I spent enough time in customer service roles myself to realize that the customer is not "always right," but to repeatedly insinuate that a customer is somehow to blame for his staff's laziness or negligence is rude, condescending, and unacceptable. The guy seemed like a typical boomer who was too insecure to admit that he or his staff had made a mistake, let alone apologize to a potential customer. Normally I'd ask when they'd expect their equipment to be returned, but I'd had enough of their attitude. On my way out, their exit door had a sign saying, "Push," so I asked the sullen young man standing behind the register if they were, "too cheap to fix their automatic doors?" "They're $20,000 a piece to fix." Hard to believe this place has been in business since 1874, especially with their rotten attitude.
