I had a very disappointing experience with Rotti's…read more I called ahead to ask about a tune-up for my snow blower, which is only four years old and hadn't been used for the past two seasons. I was quoted around $200. I specifically asked about carburetor work and was told that if anything additional work was needed, I would be called for approval before any work was done. I dropped the snow blower off on 1/21, knowing a storm was coming and that it might not be ready right away. When I called to check the status, I was told it was done and just needed a manager's sign-off. When I called back to ask about the total cost, I was shocked to be told the bill was $365. I was then informed that the carburetor had been rebuilt--without my approval. When I questioned why no one called me first, I was told they "assumed" I would want it running. While of course I want it running, I should've been called first to go over pricing. The person I spoke with showed little concern and initially brushed me off, saying they were too busy. I was disconnected while waiting, had to call back, and explain everything again. Eventually they took $50 off, which I appreciate, but this should never have happened in the first place. This is poor business practice. Just like with a car, if additional work is needed beyond the original estimate, you call the customer for approval, you don't just do the work and send a much higher bill. I will not be returning, and I will make sure others I know are aware of this experience.

Not only did they fix my snowblower quickly and professionally, but they also took the time to walk me through what I should and shouldn't do to properly maintain it. They explained everything in a way that was easy to understand and made sure I felt confident handling basic maintenance on my own. It's clear they genuinely care about their customers and want to help prevent future problems, not just fix the current one. While their selection isn't as extensive as the big-box home improvement stores, they more than make up for it with outstanding customer service and convenience. Over the years, we've purchased paint (they do an excellent job matching colors--just bring in a sample), propane refills, flowers, garden supplies, hardware, and even our Weber gas grill, which they assembled and delivered. It's rare that I can't find what I need, and when I do need assistance, someone is always nearby to help. They also have several convenient locations in the area, with ample parking at each. If you value knowledgeable employees and personal service over wandering the aisles of a warehouse-sized store, Koopman's is an excellent choice.

I had a specialized HVAC system custom designed and installed by RJ. McDonald in Barre, MA in 2023…read moreat a cost over $18,000. Overall, I was satisfied with the installation, aside from a few configuration changes they made that didn't match how my previous system's backup switch operated. While it took some getting used to, it wasn't a major issue, and I was otherwise happy with the system. Last night, my system developed what appeared to be a minor ignition issue. I called the company's after-hours service line and left a message. Robin, the on-call representative, returned my call promptly, which I appreciated. Unfortunately, the conversation quickly became disappointing. Before I could fully explain the problem, I was interrupted and told that the company showed I had not purchased propane from them within the past year. I was then informed that, despite spending thousands of dollars on a custom system they designed and installed, they would not service it unless I was buying propane from them. What was most frustrating was not just the policy itself, but the way it was communicated. The tone came across as annoyed and condescending, making me feel like my business and prior investment meant very little. When you spend over $18,000 with a company for a specialized heating system, you reasonably expect that they will at least provide service or support when an issue arises. If this is RJ. McDonald's policy, it should be made very clear before customers invest in one of their systems. I understand businesses can prioritize customers in different ways, but refusing to service equipment they installed simply because I purchase propane elsewhere is disappointing and, in my opinion, poor customer service. Based on this experience, I would encourage anyone considering a custom HVAC installation to ask detailed questions about future service policies before signing a contract.

I emailed Rotti's Wednesday night and they responded soon after! Not only that, one of the owners, Megan, said she could have it picked up the next morning. I wasn't expecting service this fast. Even then, the storm was hitting Sunday and still had little hope of have it back by then. No matter, could use the exercise and mentally prepared the kids for the Monday morning task. Sunday morning as I'm making pancakes for the family I get an email from Megan saying (paraphrasing) "Hey! Snowblower is done. Want us to drop it off?" Hell yeah!!! Mere hours before the storm. They are all very knowledgeable and helpful. Today we were looking for a couple of specialty screws and before we could even reach that section of the store two workers asked if we needed help with anything. In addition to hardware supplies, they have a really nice garden section with high-quality plants. We were particularly impressed with their hydrangeas, which were 2-3 times larger than other nurseries we have seen and listed at the same price. Also, worth noting this place is the spot in town to buy a Christmas tree! Right after Thanksgiving they ship in tons of trees and offer them for a flat rate.
