This is the best sushi in town, in our opinion. The menu had a lot that sounded good, so we picked several deluxe rolls and placed an order for take-out (this is practically a take-out only place). When I picked up the order, chef was a joy to meet. His restaurant is appropriately named! The display of fish was gorgeous. Very charming. Kind of like the places you never expected to find. Small, owner-chef run. Delightful greeting at the door, and outstanding presentation. Few tables, but this adds to the charm of a place where the owner is living the dream. We had four rolls and miso soup. Too much for two of us. Initially, my opener was, "This is the best sushi in Springfield." But that's really underselling it. This is really great sushi, period. When you walk in the small space and see the owner (and ONLY the owner), you know it's probably going to be really good. He's a sweet man. A little older. He puts the "Happy" in "Happy Sushi". Smiling the whole time. If you eat in, he'll bring you some miso soup. He'll bring you rice and spicy crab wrapped in seaweed, tell you to eat it like an ice cream cone. You can watch the Japanese pop videos on the TV, but I prefer to watch him make the rolls. The amount of care he puts into every single one, as if it's art is entertainment in and of itself. After a few songs pass, you'll have a beautiful plate of sushi in front of you, and every bite will be delicious. He'll ask every once in a while, "Good? Good!" Everything about that meal and that man will make you leave smiling. -------- Brass tacks: His prices really aren't out of line with other sushi places anywhere else in the country. A basic spicy tuna roll is going to run you $6, a specialty roll is going to be $10-17 depending on what's in it. That's the norm. This isn't your place if you're in a hurry. If you are, call ahead for pick up. Like I said, he's careful and attentive. That means for everyone. So if you aren't the only one in there, it might be a little while. Very nice sushi place, it is one of my favorite places. However I do think the location its in is very shady, I don't recommend going there at night at least not without someone else. The food is excellent even though it is just the one person working. You can tell he works hard on each of the creations and is very friendly to the customers. Amazing restaurant. Really great vegetarian options. I loved this restaurant but I do have a few reservations. I could not believe that it was a 5-star sushi restaurant in Springfield. The ratings are insanely good. The appearance of the restaurant is not perfect and the space inside is not amazing. I would recommend getting the food to go because it gets super crowded fast. Also, the food took a very long time to be served. However, the take out people got their food quickly. The best parts of this restaurant was that while we were waiting they brought us a lot of free food! I loved it! Also, the food might have been the best sushi I have ever had. While visiting the area for a baseball tournament a few of us found this great little place. We are from the west coast and were in desperate need of some good sushi. When traveling from Chicago to Springfield for a huge car show, we came across this place. While it isn't much to look at when you drive up, it's pretty good! One quick thing...when you walk in, it seems tiny, but there are more tables in the back. We almost left because the front was full. Have been all over Chicago for sushi, and this place, foodwise, could take any of them on. Ambiance leaves a lot to be desired, but if you are tired and hungry like we were, it will do! One small request..turn off that loud tv...kind of irritating when trying to eat. Will return if in the area again. Staff was VERY friendly...and happy! read more

The sushi are excellently prepared. Spicy Crunch is very special and as a sushi lover, it is the first time with this excellent taste with shrimp tempura in. The seaweed Salad is very crispy and nicely spiced. The yaki udon is very Korean style taste. The yellow tail with scallion sushi roll is not in the menu but the chef made it for us with fantasy satisfaction. The chef also ask us if we like to try kimchi soup and he treated us for free. It is a wonderful meal and culture warm dinner on our way driving from California to NY. Thanks to yelpers led us here and make a beautiful rest in Springfield. read more

Happy Sushi was GREAT!! What my wife and I often encounter with Sushi and rolls is more rice, less fish. This is not the case with Happy Sushi. The fish is absolutely the star of each. We had Yellowtail, Salmon, and Eel Sushi. Each filet of fish was prominent, fresh, and particularly with the Eel, was beautifully delicate. So, so good! We also had a Salmon roll, a Tuna roll and a Cucumber roll. Particular to the two fish rolls, again the fish was prominent and the cuts of fish were larger than many other Sushi restaurants. I have been to Happy Sushi about 5 times in the last 2 months, I absolutely love it there. Every meal starts off with some complimentary mizo soup, although I can't speak for to go meals. The sushi is fresh and always presented in an interesting way. For example, cucumber peels cut to look like shark tails. The other non-sushi dishes I've had have also been really good, like the vegetable tempura (the tempura batter was really light and tasty), and the fried rice. The sushi place that was in the same location before Happy Sushi didn't do well (obviously, because it wasn't there for long) and I'd really like to see Happy Sushi's business prosper. The owner is really friendly and isn't annoyed when I ask him to do specific things with my rolls (like add jalapeno to them). He is always making random rolls for the customers to try, like the other day he made me a kimchi roll, which I never thought I'd try, but it was actually really good. He made the kimchi himself too! I feel much better spending money at a small business like that, where the same person who owns it makes all the food and has poured his heart into it, than at Osaka or Kiku. You definitely won't regret going to Happy Sushi. read more

As an outside sales person, I travel through Central Illinois quite a bit and frequent Springfield. Although Springfield really has a ton to choose from for lunch - Happy Sushi has become my regular stop. The sushi is outstanding, the gentleman making the sushi is so happy to be doing it, and the price is beyond reasonable for the quality of the food and the level of service. Mr Happy Sushi (seeing as I do not know this wonderful chef's name) is a delight! He really makes this an experience for you, and if you don't know what to get he will guide you in the right direction! I have had the veggie roll - which i get every time, spicy salmon, california, anger management (delish!), spicy crunch, and the sunny (yummy!) --- all of which are to die for. This man truly loves making sushi as you can tell while he makes it right in front of you. The place is clean, the food is delicious and the service is impeccable. I've lost count of how many times I have eaten at (or ordered takeout) from Happy Sushi. I and everyone I know adores this place. It is fairly inexpensive and the quality it top notch. The food is off the chain & the staff is awesome! Happy Sushi is a small little thing with seating in front & back of the restaurant. It is a humble atmosphere with amazing food. I recommend the Carribean Orgasm roll, the U-top, their hefty hand rolls (spicy salmon & spicy tuna are our favorites) and seaweed salad. The owner is terrific!!!! He is very friendly and he prepares your meal in front of you. It's very easy to observe the freshness of the fish which I like. He also takes great pride in his work. This is the best sushi that I've ever had in Midwest area. I went there on Thursday night. Hiro was very friendly and servers were so nice. Hiro said they just started Korean menues(bulgogi, bibimbap, Japchae, Kimchi pork stew, etc) So I ordered Kimchi port stew(called Kimchi JJiGae in Korean). It was really delicious(hot, sour, deep taste like real authentic Korean food). Also, I ordered 4 difference pieces of sushi- Salmon, Yellowtail(Hamachi), quail egg and white fish handroll. OMG! the quality of fishes and the taste of sushi rice was perfect. I think there may be better ones in east or west coast areas, but definitely I cannot find better sushi restaurant than Happy sushi even in Chicago. Im so happy I can enjoy so delicious fresh sushi and authentic Korean food in Springfield!! :) I strongly recommend Happy sushi. read more

I want to preface this by saying that Happy Sushi was my first ever sushi experience. I did a cursory Google search to find a reputable sushi place in Springfield so that I could have a good first experience. And I must say, I left thoroughly satisfied. The satisfaction extends past the sushi as well. The red hair-dyed waitress was very affable and lit up when I asked her for recommendations for a first time sushi experience. Also the Chef, Hiro, was very welcoming and cheerful. In fact, when my party's order was brought to us, I asked the waitress to tell the Chef that I thought it looked fantastic (I'm sure you have seen some pictures of his work). A minute later Hiro came around the corner to thank me for the kind words and was happy that I ordered something that he could present to us so beautifully. By the way our order was the 10-10, Anger Management, Mexican Crunch, Spicy Tuna Roll, and Salmon Roll. So take my review for what it is - a first time ever sushi experience with nothing to really compare to. I thought the food tasted fantastic but then again, what do I know? But I do know good service and atmosphere, and Happy Sushi has that. I will definitely be back soon. read more

I came by here last week, unaware that they were closed (it was 3 pm, and I thought they were open!) I came back just after 11 am a couple of days later, and it was worth the visit. The chef and his staff are very outgoing. I didn't try the sushi, but I did try the shrimp and vegetable tempura teriyaki, and it was great. My companion had the sushi, which one I don't remember, but she raved about it. So I'll have to try that next time. There can be a bit of a wait, but it's worth it. I came just after they opened--I have the feeling there'd be more of a wait if I came at the height of the lunch rush. They did start to get crowded as I was leaving, but that's just evidence Happy Sushi is popular, and deservedly so. read more

He makes it absolutely perfect, from the cuts of the fish to the overall presentation. It is actually better than Osaka, Kiku and even the Hunan Chinese place. He also has a varied menu, and has authentic udon noodles. It is more for take-out, but does have a few tables for eating in.
