I left a glowing review 5 years ago, but unfortunately I have to update things. Happy Star has changed hands and at first the change in many recipes was actually quite good imo. The sauce on the chicken and broccoli was different, yet just as good if not better. My only complaint was that with each order, something was left out of our bag. First 2 times was a white rice box, third time was egg rolls, (I learned to check the bag and caught most issues after this). Obviously not a good look but I figured they were growing pains of the new owners. Now, the quality of the food has gotten terrible. We ordered last night and there's virtually no sauce on my chicken broccoli, and my wife's fried shrimp have gone from large plump pink shrimp, to tiny, overcooked, brownish smelly and ugly shrimp (by comparison). The shrimp used to overflow a box carton and a half-quart(?) container of sweet and sour was included. Now it's a quarter of sauce and the shrimp has likely been halved in quantity. Also, the drive home had a strong smelly shrimp smell to it, which never happened over the 10 years with the previous owners, (likely using older shrimp now). In short, our food was quite terrible, even by the new owner's standard set when they first opened. You guys are going to lose all the loyal clients at this rate. The old owners were clearly highly dedicated and their food quality was impeccable. I've come to happy Star since it opened 10 or so years ago, but we may have to seek out an alternative, which is sad. read more

It seems to be run by a very nice family as we see the same people each time we go in. While the outside is nothing to look at, the food is excellent. Excellent and rich flavor. Large portions. This has been our go-to Chinese spot for four years, but it seems the restaurant has recently changed hands. The quality has tanked. They used to have a killer crab Rangoon, but now they are identical to the frozen ones you get from Panda Express that are Cream Cheese Rangoon. I was so glad to find out they had egg foo young and as it turns out their gravy is so much better than Jades. You must try the egg foo Young with their yummy gravy its delicious. I've dined at Happy Star twice. The first time, I got the Hunan beef because I like my dishes spicy. For $8.95, you get A LOT of food, enough for three servings of a whole plate of food. While I deeply appreciate the quantity of food you get, I was disappointed that my dish was not spicy at all. Was almost bland. I gave them a second shot a few nights ago and decided on the $9.95 Mongolian beef. Again, a lot of food and, again, it wasn't spicy. The quality of the meat this time around was even poor. I am a fat guy with a very American appetite and I couldn't stomach more than three or four bites. In the end, I deeply respect how hard they work and I wish them all the success in the world. We love Happy Star! They are our go-to for Chinese in Reynoldsburg. Portions are big and food tastes great! Our family favorites: shrimp chow mei fun, sesame chicken, egg drop soup, teriyaki chicken, fried wontons. We've had other items as well but these are our favorites. My 6 year old and I share the shrimp chow mei fun and he loves it! It's what he always asks for. There's always plenty leftover for lunch or dinner the next day. My only issue with Happy Star is that it seems like the last few times I've called in an order, the person taking my order sounds severely depressed. The first time I just figured she was having a bad day. But it's happened a few times now and it honestly makes me sad to talk to her. Best Asian food in the area!! They are priced low and their portion sizes are huge. I always have left overs for the next day. Their food is never greasy and is good quality. You always seem to leave with a free gift, either cookies or calendars. If there is a dish on their menu that is spicy but you want it mild, they will accommodate you with pleasure.
