When this place first opened a few years ago, it was pretty good and I would have given it 4 stars. Now, everything has changed. Mediocre sushi with dryish rice and fish that is sometimes in questionable shape, at really ridiculous prices (about $7 for a california roll!). Don't waste your money or your health. I was really hoping this place was as good as it claimed to be, sadly, it was not. This was out first visit, probably the last as well. The sashimi it self was pretty good, but the sushi rice was not. The rice had a weird taste, kind of like cleaning solution. Maybe it's the vinegar they are using, or the amount. The sushi rice was just bad. We just took the sashimi, and threw out the rice, what a waste. My hubby also got steak teriyaki be the box. He asked for medium rare, but the steak was more like well done. The sauce was flavorful, but beef was very chewy. I am not sure what kind of tempura batter they used, but it was nothing like what we have had. It was dense and dark, not light and flaky. Overall, a major disappointment. It's a shame, because we really want to like this place. :( read more

Been going to this place since I was a kid and it's a family favorite. There used to be only three tables in the entire restaurant but it is much larger now. Since i live pretty close around here with my gf..i come here a lot, but usually at night when we want to catch a nice romantic quick snack. When you walk in..it may be small, but don`t let that deceive you. It is a tiny place, but the sushi there is amazing. I love the environment with the Japanese decor and the staff is VERY friendly. Ok, I have lived in this neighborhood since 2003 and have been a semi-regular of this place since day one for whenever I start really jonesing sushi. I always looked passed the New York Newsday (??Ha!) reviews from 1998 hanging in the window (still there) because it was until recently, the only sushi place in reasonable walking distance of my apartment. The place was always OK, nothing horrible, nothing special, it always served its purpose. Today, I dont know what the hell happened. I kept it simple, sushi dinner with the usual salad and miso soup. As I waited for 20 minutes, suddenly my sushi appeared, uhmmm, what happened to my soup and salad I asked the female server??, she apologized, took the sushi away and brought my soup and salad. The salad, obviously made on the plate hours earlier with the dressing totally drenched on, now a very soggy wilted lettuce mess. I battled through, and ate half of it. My sushi returned, and this part is totally my fault, it was the exact same plate of sushi that they delivered to me 30+ minutes before, and I should have sent it back, but I didn't. I tried, but it was obvious that everything started to "turn". One piece I actually spit back onto my plate mid-chew, instead of doing the right thing of spitting it back into my napkin. I was done, signaled the male server that has been there forever, explained my issues, and asked for the check. He was very apologetic, made some adjustments to my check, we shook hands and I was on my way, stomach turning all the way home. I've been coming to Happy Kitchen for about several years now, recently they expanded and it has worked for them, as they are getting busier and busier. They now take credit card, for years it was cash only. The place is super cute and clean and the owner is very friendly and courteous (great service overall). The food always taste fresh and my favorite platter is the chicken cutlet. The reason I give it four stars is cause I've tried the sushi some time ago (although I must say the last time was about 2 years) and although it was fresh, it was okay taste-wise (maybe I am just not used to fresh sushi??). However I like the actual plates (the cooked food) , it remains one of my favorite place to eat in Jackson Heights. read more

I've been coming to this restaurant for years!! I love it! Their ingredients are always fresh and their service is good. I always do take out though. I've probably eaten there a handful of times because its pretty small so if you are dining in i suggest you go with 1 or 2 friends max. Huge parties are better off just takin the food to go. I also love this place for the sushi newbies. They have a chicken tempura roll and a chicken teriyaki roll for those picky eaters =] my favorite roll is spicy tuna crunch roll and the green monster roll. read more

I've been to Happy Kitchen many times and every time the food was very tasty. Sushi always seems to be fresh and they don't use any artificial taste additives or msg. The place itself is pretty small, only 3 tables(not good for bigger groups), but that is what makes it even more cool. I will definitely come back. read more

Every time we eat there in person, the service is good, as long as it's not Tuesday when the Caucasian gentleman takes the orders. My bf and I eat here on a pretty regular basis and usually get the same thing - Jackson Heights Roll (I love tuna, avocado and roe) and an avocado salad - sometimes we'll also get the miso soup and banana tempura for dessert. A few weeks ago, the veggies weren't fresh and we were a bit disappointed, but I guess enough people complained because the quality was all there last night. I love this place. They have the best sushi in the Jackson Heights area. The fish is fresh, there are plenty of vegetarian options, the prices are decent, and the owner is wonderful. I have Celiac disease so eating out is a challenge for me. Happy Kitchen has always been really flexible with my dining needs. The owner and staff are knowledgable about what contains gluten and what doesn't. I feel very safe eating here. They clean the boards and knives to ensure no cross contamination of gluten on my plate and their wasabi is gluten free. They even remember my name when I come in! It's a great little neighborhood joint. They don't have gluten free soy sauce, so I bring my own which is not a big deal. I have eaten here before I was on the gluten free diet and it was just as tasty, so I don't just love it because they can accomodate my needs, I love it because it's just plain DELICIOUS. read more

I went there today and ordered steamed vegetables and brown rice. I watched with disgust as the man put my food in a microwave to cook it. I then noticed a sign that they had that states that they "warm" the food by using a microwave. And I spied the lady in front making sushi using a microwave next to her as well. Not only is this extremely lazy, but unhealthy. Microwaving your food changes the chemical makeup and creates cancer causing material. I refused the food and walked out. Disgusting.
