Left a bad after mouth taste and I got extremely sick which led me to having diarrhea and my stomach hurts. I haven't had any negative experiences in the past and their sushi is just okay, although I've definitely had better from other places. I ordered salmon rolls today which I'm sadly unsatisfied with. Within 7 rolls, one of them had a piece of bone inside and another three had a piece of plastic????? I found myself carefully chewing each subsequent roll to make sure there was nothing inside it other than the salmon. Maybe this is just a one-time bad experience, but considering their sushi isn't truly amazing and fresh looking/tasting I think I'm better off getting Japanese food elsewhere. read more

I have to bump them up to four, because I do go here pretty regularly and after tonight my estimation of the staff has gone from "super nice" to "eff-ing awesome." I called in an order to pick up, which I did, no problem. But when I got home, it turns out I ended up with ol' fashioned futomaki, when I had ordered vegetable futomaki (being a vegetarian, after all). So I ran back down to the restaurant and without even blinking, they passed up all the other orders, told me to select an additional roll from the menu on the house (or a drink, if I preferred), and corrected the mistake. The man helping me out (who I believe is the owner), apologized, thanked me for my business, and then sent me on my way. No harm, no foul, right? Food is nothing special, bland and uninspiring. Ordered a chicken teriyaki boxed lunch set. Came with a water downed miso soup, California roll pieces, a salad, rice and some tempura. Chicken teriyaki pieces not enough to pair down the rice with. Additionally, we ordered another specialty roll. Not memorable. It tasted like sushi that was prepared for an China buffet in the Midwest. Will not be returning here unfortunately because of the food. Only upside is overall ambience is pleasant. I've been to Happy Kitchen a couple of times and they never disappoint! The staff is friendly! The restaurant, though small, is cute and quiet. My husband and I started with hot sake and wasabi pork shumai. The shumai was served hot and the dipping sauce was a perfect accompaniment. For our main course we had Red Snapper Sashimi and Yellowtail sashimi. The fish is fresh and delicious with a wonderful texture. We also had a white tuna spicy crunch roll, and a hot passion roll (we added crunch). They were both so tasty and not too spicy. This is becoming one of our favorite restaurants in Jackson Heights. This was our second visit to Happy Kitchen in about 2 months. We're in love. It's tiny, (three tables, and about 4 seats at the Sushi Bar). Staff is courteous and laid back, the restaurant is clean, the menu is simple and delicious. We had hot sake, which always warms us up nicely. We started with pork and wasabi shumai, then had a spicy crunchy white tuna roll, and a fire roll with crab and mackerel (when given the choice to add crunch, one must add crunch.). They were all fresh, and delicious. We also had Red Snapper and Yellowtail sashimi, which were buttery, smooth, and awesome. People-watching with my wife out the front window is always fun, we always feel warm and welcomed when we step into this tiny piece of happy sushi heaven. About two years ago they expanded, have a more spacious restroom, about five more tables and now accept credit cards. The place is clean, play relaxing soft Japanese music and all food is freshly made. The decor is simple and combination of modern and traditional stuff. The menu has a bit of everything from sushi, bento box specials, udon noodles, teriyaki & curry bowls. They also offer appetizers, desserts and homemade tea combinations. The house special blend is great. The staff is friendly and service is good. There are other restaurants in the area but this one is best due to ambiance, authenticity and family friendly. The place still looks, smells, and feels spotless. If you need to use the restroom take a peek to your right and that's the kitchen, its seriously so clean. I am appalled. I ate here with a friend a couple of days ago and everything was ok, not great but good enough. The spicy mayo was extremely spicy, the sushi was alright and I also ordered and udon soup which had a small amount of beef. Honestly I wasn't expecting much, and I wasn't upset and walked out fine. My total was $26, and I left a Cash tip of $6 which was generous considering we had to ask our waitress for spicy mayo twice. The part that really angered me was the fact was when reviewing my bank statement today, I noticed that the restaurant took and additional $3 from my credit card as a tip. Granted it's not a lot of money, but I had already left a 23% CASH tip, and for them to sneakily try and steal, and I say steal because that's what this was, is not okay and professional at all. It's pretty good, I guess. If you're thinking to yourself, "Hey, that sounds like a rather trite and simplistic review," you'd be right, but there's not a lot else to say about this place. The fish itself is good, but not outstanding. The sushi was comprised of, in my estimation, too much rice in relation to the amount of fish. Were I to go again (which I likely will), I'd get the sashimi. The miso soup was very hearty and tasty. The salad dressing was the usual nutty ginger, which I enjoy a lot, but the salad itself was just sort of a pile of greens with a few carrot shreds, a tomato wedge, and a couple of slices of cucumber on the side The tempura was okay- a little on the greasy side. The meal was served with too little wasabi and ginger for my liking, and the wasabi was not "real" wasabi. Meh, overall the whole shebang was decent, but nothing remarkable. I did like that on the front of the menu, they took pains to explain that they used no artificial ingredients and that all food was freshly prepared. The prices at this place are reasonable, and because it's very close to where I live, I will be going here again. It's a solid little sushi place, which, after all, means a lot in Jackson Heights. Lets break down a few aspects: Place: if you want loud or tacky music with bar ambience you're in the wrong place. It's a very quiet, small place with almost meditative music where you can enjoy a calm conversation or if you're alone having a nice meal. Food: We love coming here because the food is fresh, natural, not overcooked, nor too salty, too greasy or cheap quality. The fish and meet are fresh, as well as all the ingredients. I never had any bad tasting or old food. Plus is also they never freeze stuff, nor do they use a microwave. Yeah, if you like MSG to enhance the taste, go somewhere else. Service: this is the only point and reason why I'm not giving 5 stars. The staff is extremely serious and shy to a point that it appears unfriendly. Regardless they are fast and efficient and at the end they do a good job. All areas are clean and well kept. We come here since almost a year and never had the impression it smells bad as other reviewers complain. All in all it serves a niche of food-conscious, calm people. Hi, The ability to get an excellent nice big soba noodles with veggies (soup-style yet it is a dish) and maybe tofu bowl for about $7 is more than enough for 4 stars. This is one of the healthiest little meals around and very hard to find. Tempura is a good idea here too, maybe rice with curry sauce at times. So many places balk at soba noodles, and if you want udon instead, be my guest. New ownership a while back, maybe some changes from a few years ago. The rice with seaweed (taken home) needed more seaweed., the only disappointment on the recent visit. The rice was good, though. Since I am not a sushi fan, no comment on that. If you want a certain type of filling, healthy lunch-dinner this is a nice place to try to swing by. I love this place ! Whenever I'm in the mood for Japanese food without hesitation this is my go to destination! The staff are so welcoming and always are so friendly and polite! Very profesional the sushi bar is very nice you can see the sushi chef as he makes sushi not to mention the cool Japanese sushi chef coat they wear definitely takes you out of the city life it's very tranquil inside they offer variety of teas.
