This is one of my favorite small businesses in Rochester, there's so many good things to say about it. They have a huge variety of tea and related paraphernalia for storing and serving your tea collection at home. The space inside is also really bright, clean, and welcoming. The owner is so kind too. I love that they have counter service here as well. I've been by for a hot cup of tea or tea flight as a treat from time to time. This time I decided to try a hot matcha latte for the first time. What a lovely little spot. I remember when the were down the street it was a jewel box of a store. They moved into what was Tru Yoga (the moved across the street) The husband and wife team behind this great tea store are lovely and gracious as is there staff. I don't usually get beverages when I'm out and about unless it's a social event. I came with a friend on a Saturday after lunch and loved how warm and inviting this place is. There's a lot of little cute things around the store, like the miniature animal figures all over the counter. I got a Chai and watched them making it. It has freshly minced ginger out of a food processor - that's why you do get a strong ginger taste. The spiced flavor didn't taste diluted at all. It was a lot of Chai though. Why, oh why, can't there be more places like this in my world? I drink loose tea every day (ordered from In Pursuit of Tea, a lovely small tea company that sources tea from all over the world). My cousin and I stumbled upon this shop while I was visiting him last weekend and stopped in for a cup and I fell hard. Purchased some bags for the road and have been thoroughly enjoying the tea ever since. Wow, this shop was incredible. Amazing tea flights for $10 with wonderful education and background on each tea. We tried the oolong and white tea flights. There is also a traditional pu-erh tea pouring for $13 for 5 steeps. The whole atmosphere is incredibly calming and several customers were there enjoying a cup of tea and reading a book. Introduced to this place by fellow Yelpers, and prior to getting notoriety on CNN's top Tea Houses in the World, LTB is a must-go for those that want to divulge in caffeine, conversations, and culture. The shoppe boasts a modest, but welcoming interior with a staff reflecting those aesthetics, and that's a wonderful thing. LTB is the embodiment of "peace" if I were to describe this place with one word. Usually on Sunday mornings I find myself placed here with tea that tastes the way I love it: easy breezy and Japanesey. I've tried several unique teas but I find myself always going back to the Gyokuro Green Tea. The umami is so strong and robust I forget that I'm drinking a tea; i feel like I'm drinking a meal. I absolutely love this tea. I would like to buy a pack and brew it at home, but I just have a sinking feeling that I could never make it as well as the Tea Specialist here. Just a few minutes in, you can see her passion and depth of knowledge of her product, which may rival that of the owner! If I have a question about a certain tea, or process, there's no guessing: she immediately grabs a reference book to seek that answer for the benefit our knowledge. RESPECT. Though this is primarily for tea, and you don't want to eat something too strong to throw off your appreciation for the flavor profile, I hope that they serve food beyond just pastries from the Red Fern. Despite that, being open less than a year, I'm hugely impressed with this place. I look forward to seeing how it grows. read more

I came to Rochester for an afternoon of museum-ing and luckily remembered reading an article about this place back when it opened so I thought we'd check it out. What a gem! Leaf Tea Bar is not a cafe the kind of cafe that you come to as a backdrop for doing other things. It is a destination for savoring a really good cup of tea. The menu reads like you are at a wine bar, detailing where and when the leaves were picked, and the flavors within the tea. The owner has carefully selected each option he offers and can answer all of your tea questions. The bar is intimate and yet relaxed. The tea is excellent. I will be back! Next time I might try to drive to Rochester for one of his tea classes. They look really interesting and are held weekly, I believe. read more

I love, love, love Leaf Tea bar! I stumbled in one day in September hoping to try to find some tea leaves that would allow me to make a good masala chai like I used to have 5+ times a day in Mumbai. What I found was a lovely and cozy little tea bar that would make me that wonderful cup of tea (the secret to a good mumbai style chai is lemongrass, according to Niraj, the owner of the shop). In my first few visits I met a whole bunch of interesting people from around Rochester, who work in many varied industries (a botanist from Naz / the Lamberton Conservatory, a journalist who freelances for the D & C, a librarian from RIT, some new undergrads at UofR planning a fall trip to Letchworth and Niagara Falls, and many more!). This review is for the new Leaf Tea Bar. I was a guest of Niraj (the owner) and Yelp at a recent tasting event. Niraj is an excellent host and really knows his tea. I've been drinking tea for quite some time. (I don't drink coffee.) I know a decent amount about Japanese tea but in one hour my knowledge easily tripled listening to Niraj discussing the difference between Green and Black teas, (Did you know they come from the same plant?) and many other aspects of the drink and its history. We tried teas from Japan, China, Nepal and Taiwan. The selection of tea is wide, ranging from more typical black teas to rare green teas and oolong teas that are served in an ornate cup and tray combo. Be aware some of the tea is more expensive than you may be used to but you get what you pay for and Niraj has made some very rare (and thus expensive) varieties of tea available to our neighborhood. He also steeps each tea to the exact temperature and time that it requires. (Which all in attendance agreed makes a HUGE difference.) The space is in a great location right in the heart of the South Wedge. The actual bar is beautiful and the space is bright and inviting. It's very minimal, I'm hoping they add something on the walls to warm the space up a bit. I'll certainly be back to Leaf and am looking forward to their grand opening and continued success. read more

I am incredibly picky about tea shops/lounges, (I can count the tea shops I'd patronize on one hand) but Happy Earth passes the bar. The selection isn't massive but is calculated--there's a little of everything from single estate Darjeelings to Chinese & Japanese greens to Taiwanese oolongs. Any avid tea drinker could find something compelling or new. Even if you don't know anything about tea it's a welcoming environment to try it out; Niraj is a knowledgeable and welcoming owner and the rest of the staff are friendly as well. I sampled a cold brew tea, which was amazing, but landed on a spring Darjeeling black--and wasn't sorry. With summer hearing up, the cold brew is the perfect rejuvenating drink, even if you grab it to go. Niraj's focus on high quality, organic tea translates to a great and nourishing experience that changes with the season. It's refreshing to have a tea lounge like this in Rochester and I recommend it fully, which I rarely do for other tea spots. read more

Happy Earth Tea is a great place for finding exquisite tea in the Rochester area.I have bought from Naraj (the guy in the photo), the business owner, for quite sometime now, and surprised that no YELP review has been made yet. The reviews HPT receives is from the website, which all have wonderful things to say. Is the price a bit on the higher end...yes BUT I haven't found many places in upstate NY that can match quality. i first heard of HPT through a person working in the art field who specializes in making Japanese handcrafted tea ware. I still remember my very first purchase from HPT it was a Yerba Mate chai blend (about a year ago). This chai has a very "gingery" taste to it; to me it was perfect for a cold winter to sip on and get warm. Ever since then I've bought various oolongs, pu'er, and green tea from him. I guess I really should be trying the darjeeling HPT offers because this is probably his most exquisite/selected from what I've noticed in his site. Again I have my subjective preference for Chinese teas, and when I can't get it from a friend/relative from China, I go to HPT because their teas are premium quality in comparison to most places in the upstate area. I think the quality stems from he fact that A) is a family run business B) Naraj often goes to the source to get his teas (as in he actually travels to the tea plantations... HPT's social media is often updated w/ their tea travels) C) is just well knowledgeable with tea. Now most of the tea HPT deals with are coming from the S. Asia area, although he does have some coming from China/Taiwan. If you are into black teas (darjeeling seem to be HPT's "creme de la creme"), then HPT is definitely your go to place. Would I say I am a self-professed tea snob, somewhat yes and I have my preference for premium teas coming from China, in particular white tea/green tea varieties which are very difficult to come by even in big Chinatowns in the US. To this date the most expensive tea I've gotten from HPT was the "concubine oolong" from Taiwan, at $31 for 2 ounces it was definitely a shiny penny or two. Was it amazing, well it's been gone for awhile now :-) Some may wonder, "why 4 out of 5 stars? you too bourgeoisie to give a 5 star? Do you bite your thumb at me sir?" Well, no I am not biting my thumb nor will I be quoting anymore Shakespeare...I just wish there was much more option with Chinese teas If you are looking for premium teas this is the place to go, but remember quality and price usually go hand-in-hand. read more

This place is a gem and Jane, who served my boyfriend and I, was wonderful and thorough in her demonstration of traditional Chinese Pu-erh tea steeping with a tea pet. We also had the matcha tea and she showed us how to use the bamboo spoon and whisk. At the end we bought genmaicha and smoked black tea in bulk as well as a set of tea cups.
