Surprisingly good! We recently bought a vacation home inside of Camp Florida on Lake Grassy! We've driven by this spot so many times and figured why not give it a try! Its much large inside than we would have thought and it was quite busy for a Sunday at 10:30. Sara was our waitress and she was on point! Really all the staff work well together and move with urgency. My first impression was, wow, this staff kicks ass! And they do! The food was prepared very well and not just your standard breakfast prep! Much love and detail goes into their plates and the portions are large. Everything was prepared from scratch with the perfect flavors. I ordered the Smokehouse Breakfast and the portion of Grilled Ham must have been 10oz and so flavorful! I love it when Yelp helps me find the little, lesser known places and this family owned joint really rang all my bells for breakfast! They call themselves a diner, but they are a huge multi-room place right on Route 27 South. This place could seat an army! Atmosphere- The décor is really not diner but old Florida kitsch, but folks are coming here for the great food. Expect bustling servers flying in every direction. This is a breakfast and lunch only place closing in mid-afternoon. I was there on a Sunday morning which leads me to a pro tip- Pro Tip- All hell breaks loose on a Sunday when the after-church crowd piles in around 10:30! Service- I sat at the bar and my server was no nonsense and humorous. She was just fine and kept my coffee topped off but when the church crowd hit she was out of control! Food- Huge American breakfast menu will all the usual suspects. I went with a Meatlovers Omelet with Hash Browns and Toast for $8.95. I would say it was out in about five minutes. BTW- My coffee was excellent. My omelet was massive and packed with breakfast meats and lots of cheese. My hash browns were piping hot and not greasy. One of the many spreads available for your toast was homemade Strawberry Butter. OMG was it unique and delicious! This was a homemade American breakfast at its best. I went to Lake Placid for a funeral. The family decided to meet at the Happy Chef because it was the deceased family members favorite place. We understood that with Covid seating could be a issue. There were 20 of us. But the host, which I found out later is the owner was rude and not at all wanting try to accommodate us. She told us we should have made prior arrangements, well we tried but they said they didn't do that. She said we could come in and eat as customers left, but not all together. We ended up leaving and went to another place called Main Street. The place was packed, but we explained our situation and they went out of their way to accommodate us. They even moved tables. The waitresses were amazing and breakfast was excellent. For as many of us as there were , there Was no complaints about any of the food. All the food came out hot, fresh and delicious. We actually commented about how good it was throughout the day. I don't live in Lake Placid, but when ever I go back this will be one of my go places. Thank you Main Street for making a bad day good. Worst place ever! Ordered pancakes and my friend ordered eggs. Don't know how they could mess up such a simple order but they did. They added red food color to both our orders. I didn't want red pancakes and my friend didn't want red eggs. We complained and they didn't care. It wasn't on the menu or advertised that they die thief food red. I understand it was Valentines Day but we didn't want red food color in our food. They didn't even offer to remake our orders because they said all their pancake mix had the dye in it. We have been coming here almost since the Happy Chef opened, Myself and my Motorcycle riding friends live down in the Ft. Myers area and this is our favorite ride to Restaurant. the food has always been fantastic and we have never had a complaint. The first time i came here I was impressed by the Home fried potatoes, these were real home fried potatoes, not the typical potato chunks they throw in the deep fryer like most places do today. This used to be a great family run truck stop diner. Home cooking and a friendly place where the cowboys and blue collar working folks would have breakfast and lunch. Southern cooked vegetables, okra, collards, Lima beans, coleslaw, cucumber salad, potato salad, beets along with chicken fried steak, meatloaf an other down home delights. New ownership has tried to take this place in a new direction, but seem to miss the mark. I've eaten there 4 or 5 times and each time I've found disappointment. About the only thing that was a pleasant surprise was the strawberry butter (a blend of strawberry preserves and dairy butter) that was good on either toast or pancakes. The cucumber salad was more onion than cucumbers and very vinegary. I had a catfish platter and the fish was well cooked, moist and tender, but the hush puppies were dry and flavorless. They have a sign outside that says they are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but I've never seen them open for dinner. read more

This is a local eatery that will become a "regular" place for us. We had been traveling and were almost home when we decided to stop for breakfast/lunch/whatever. This place is almost across the street from the Winn Dixie market on Route 27 and I've passed it numerous times so we decided it was time to try it. I am glad we did. The place is really big inside and the decor is typical Mom & Pop been around forever style. (clean too) The menu offers lots of choices and our server (Linda) was fast, friendly and nice. We decided on breakfast and I ordered eggs, sausage and pancakes. They are certainly not stingy...I couldn't finish it all (which is saying something. I went in there starving!) Linda offered regular or sugar-free maple syrup and also pointed out little containers of their homemade strawberry butter mixed in a basket with the creamers and sugar packets. I am so glad I tried it. That's the only thing that went on my pancakes!! (delicious) Our server made sure we knew the hours and that they were open Mondays. We will be back definitely. Beats the heck out of some big chain restaurants by a lot. Good food / good service read more

What a perfect lunch we had on our recent visit to Happy Chef Diner! My husband the turkey dinner with the trimmings. Came with a group of friends 9 ppl to be exact. We rode over on our Harleys. Stayed at the Ramada. The locals from Carly's Bar (great bar) Recommended Happy Chef for breakfast. Next morning we heading over to Happy Chef. I walked in told them we have a party of 9 , the older women behind the front counter was immediately rude. Talk about zero personality. We were sat fairly quickly for such a large party and small local restaurant. We were sat in the " Christmas Room". Waitress was Naca she was amazing ! Food was very good. We enjoyed our meal and planned on returning the next morning. Upon checking out he the older women(have feeling she's the owner) was down right rude,short fused,grumpy,uptight. We blew it off because the service and food was so amazing. Turned the next day. Walked into the establishment I let her know there was none of us if she could see us even if it was separately or even split at three tables. She says I can't do it I can't!!!! With a stone cold face. I can't server you . So I said again , well can we all sit separately? She rolled her eyes with a serious face and said I'll see what I can do.That was enough for me , went outside to my friends and explained to him how rude she was and that she was very rude to them the day before when paying checks.It's very apparent she doesn't like bikers or outsiders ,out of towners in her establishment it's a shame . I went in today around 12:30. The place was crowded. There was one free table to the back of the extended seating area. It had not been cleared from the previous customers. I certainly didn't mind and sat down and opened up my book to read. After a while the owner came over and proceeded to give me a ration of sh*t. She said the rule was that I was to wait at the door to be seated. What a sour puss. I've been there a number of times and it's not been an issue before. Although the owner has been heaps friendlier when they've been empty or near empty (this past year). I guess too much money rolling in can make the owner a little too contented. I walked out. Not only was the chef happy, but the whole staff was so cheerful and friendly, continuing the reputation for down-home hospitality the owners have maintained since the historic country store in Palmdale they had was tragically lost to fire. The fried fish was so light and tasty it melted in my mouth. It was very relaxing to sit in the comfortable upholstered chairs that surround every table! My husband, Gary Luckey, now 77, used to eat there with his parents when he was six years old, but he remembers the building well. All through the years we have enjoyed this place even back when it was the landmark known as "the truck stop". This is also the place that was the popular restaurant owned by a family for so many years and had endeared themselves to the community, making it hard to believe it could ever be the same again when it closed. But I am glad to say the "truck stop" is back better than ever, and we will be regulars there once again! Betty L. read more
