The prices are really good (like... shockingly reasonable sometimes), and they do NOT play around with portions. You order one thing and it shows up like you accidentally ordered for two people. Food-wise, it's fresh and solid. Not fancy, not trying to be some cute Brooklyn "concept," it's just good everyday food that actually tastes like it was made right. I've never had anything that blew my mind, but I also haven't had anything disappointing either, which honestly is kind of the dream for a regular go-to place. Service is usually pretty quick and friendly. It's not like white-glove or super warm and fuzzy, but they're nice, they hustle, and you're not sitting there forever wondering if they forgot you. And the vibe inside is exactly what you'd expect, simple, chill, nothing "wow" about the ambiance, but it's clean and totally fine. Saw this place on Yelp and decided to give it a try. Had no idea how close it was to my baby's pediatrician. We actually walked right passed it before I wanted to go there as it's very unassuming and gets lost in the Asian market shuffle. The place is small, but clean and when I arrived, there were 4 people waiting on food. I decided on a poke bowl (3 proteins and 3 vegetables - $13), a crispy rice pizza with choice of spicy kani/salmon/tuna and 2 pieces of salmon roe (ikura). I would start by saying that it was a great value for all that food - paid 28 and change for all the items. The poke bowl was such a good deal and the food and fish was fresh. I would have liked if the edamame was salted, but no real complaints. The eel was also really good. The crispy rice pizza was not what I was hoping for as I had something else in mind, but it was nicely covered with the spicy salmon I chose as well as avocado, tempura flakes and tobiko. The salmon roe sushi pieces were at a price from the olden days when all sushi was $1. At $1.50 I had to try it even if it wasn't going to be good. I did not prefer this "flavor", but it actually went well as a topping in my poke bowl and on top of the pizza so not a waste at all. I was pleasantly surprised and looking forward to trying more again soon! The people who worked there were super nice and in my sleepiness after the baby's doctor appointment, I actually paid an extra $10 for my food and the guy gave it back to me. I don't usually pay cash (maybe I should stop lol), but that act of kindness made my day. Even though some might not think it's a big deal, it was to me because in this day and age, it's rough out there. I've noticed this shop when it first opened last year. First tried this place when my MIL ordered a tray with a variety of rolls and special rolls. I dont eat raw items so I can only speak about the cooked rolls. Honestly for the price, the quality of the sushi isn't bad. It does remind me of homemade sushi except maybe just a bit better. Their lunch special is pretty unbeatable if you ask me. Though not all rolls are GREAT, they suffice for what you're paying. Lunch specials are $9 for any three rolls and you can choose a salad or soup. I ordered lunch specials from them and we chose the salad option- to our surprise it was a kani salad! Thought that was a nice change! I think one of the biggest feedback I hear is that in their spicy salmon, they add those tempura crunch to it, so instead of more salmon, there's an inconsistent amount of salmon ration to the crunch which didn't appeal to my family members. When I walk by the shop, especially on weekends, I do notice they have a lot of foot traffic so happy that they're doing well! So, so happy this is at Ave U and will definitely be returning! Don't let the small exterior fool you -- the food is delicious and the prices are so reasonable. I called to ask about their sushi tray specials (there are so many of them on the menu pictures) to figure out what would be the best bang for my buck and they were so patient in explaining the various pieces of sushi in each tray. I landed on tray #2 which has spicy Kani rolls, shrimp tempura rolls, California rolls, etc and it came in a giant tray! They said it would be ready in 20 minutes but when we went after 15 minutes it was already packaged and ready for us! The total ended up being around $27 paying with card (excluding tip). I got the salad and it was a poorly made kani salad. The cucumber was shredded and soggy and the imitation crab was drowned in this bland mayonnaise sauce! Go with the miso soup. This taste generic but way better than the kani salad. I rather have the garden salad with the ginger dressing that most Japanese restaurants have. The shrimp tempura and the salmon mango rolls were good. The rest of the rolls were not well made and fell apart and the rice need more vinegar seasoning. It does taste homemade. Happy I found this spot! In a couple words: affordable alternative, new neighborhood staple, friendly people! Before I get into food, the service was quick and super friendly. I got a bit lost on my way to the spot since I no longer live in the area and had a good laugh with one of the staff about it. Cool surprise, tho the salad was a bitttt soggy and lacking in flavor. But honestly, bang for your buck, am I right? My dad's miso soup didn't seem to skimp on the seaweed or tofu at all either which was a nice surprise too. I noticed they have poke on the menu! Haven't seen this in the area. Their prices are on point for it, esp w the variety offered for protein choices. I'm mostly surprised at finding this variety in South Brooklyn as I think of Poke being a sort of specialty $$$ city only thing. The biggest "eh" thing that stood out to me was the rice/seaweed. The rice seemed a bit over cooked/lacked some flavor which I think contributes to that "homemade" feeling a reviewer mentioned. It felt more Chinese than Japanese, but it's not a big deal depending on how picky you are. Honestly, if they made small tweaks to the rice I'm pretty sure their sushi would be perfectly fine. And when you add the low low cost to it + the new neighborhood option of poke that sushi would be BEYOND fine! This is my new go-to spot for sushi trays. Opened less than a year ago, this small store is owned by a Toishanese family. It's really a tiny store -- if you blink, you'll walk right past it. Because it's such a tight space, this is more of a take-out spot--no dining in. After several recommendations from friends, I ordered from here the day after Lunar New Year. We called ahead for pickup but order was not ready until 45minutes after call. I thought that was a pretty long wait. However, the owners said it was because there was only one sushi chef working that day and they did not expect to be that busy. Since it's still a fairly new business for them, they're still learning and working out the kinks. So I recommend calling ahead a bit earlier if you want to pick up your order in a hurry. That being said, the sushi is well worth the wait! I ordered the party tray A for $42, which includes 10 regular rolls and 2 special rolls. For the special rolls, I got the salmon sashimi roll and volcano roll. Regular rolls include yellowtail jalapeño, spicy salmon, spicy yellowtail, eel avocado, spicy shrimp, tuna, etc. All of the rolls were so good. I definitely recommend the salmon sashimi special roll -- it actually does not have any rice so it's all salmon deliciousness. That was the one roll that stood out above the rest. Owner was nice and friendly, waited for about 10 minutes and my ordered was ready for pick-up. The Sushi was fresh, and enough flavor that I didn't really need much soy sauce. I moved to NYC from WA in September 2021 and have spent MONTHS trying to find a sushi place that I wouldn't regret later on. For me it was extra hard because I won't eat raw fish, caviar, eel, etc. Basically crab (kani) and shrimp is the only thing I will eat with it. So it's always very limited for me. I came across Happy Canteen and the only downside I saw mentioned in reviews was something about avocado being brown, and some changes being difficult. The first time I ordered, after two days of trying to talk myself out of it, I ordered the Tiger Roll, Volcano Roll and California roll. I figured with three options at least one would be a winner. They were all pretty great, I just found that cream cheese for me in a roll (Volcano Roll) was a no go. But the spicy kani on top of it??? Amazing. I added it to the top of the California roll and that BLEW IT out of the water. I was so impressed. The Tiger roll wasn't bad of course, it was good. The worst part was that the avocado WAS a little brown, but given how far from me it is and the driver had other stops, I wasn't really surprised. Then the next day I ordered two California rolls and asked for spicy kani on top. For some reason they couldn't just charge extra (most merchants can through UberEats) but they called and I got to speak with them. They advised me how to revise my order, they cancelled it on their end and I happily replaced it and got exactly what I wanted. I was in heaven.
