We celebrated my niece and my birthday at my favorite Japanese place in Brooklyn. Hayashi has the best service. They are so attentive, our tea and water glasses were always filled to the rim. BLUF: A decent neighborhood restaurant. We visited Hayashi for a quick lunch. Food: OK (3 out of 5 stars) - Sushi Lunch: $15 ($16.33 with tax). Five pieces of nigiri and six California roll pieces. The raw fish was acceptably fresh and presented at the right temperature, but could have been tighter. - Salmon Teriyaki Lunch Bento: $14 ($15.24 with tax). The salmon was slightly overcooked, and the teriyaki sauce was slightly watered down. Service: Good (4 out of 5 stars) Hayashi offers complimentary tea. The staff regularly checked on how we were doing and refilled our tea. Atmosphere and Other: - Seating was comfortable, though the restaurant was more dimly-lit than I would have liked. - There is one well-maintained unisex restroom. - Parking in front of the restaurant is metered, but it is easy to find residential parking nearby. read more

An okay sushi place if you happen to be in the neighborhood. Nothing special but it will do the job nicely if you have a sushi craving. Had the sushi lunch. The rolls were a nice size, with not too much sushi rice. Temperature of sashimi was the proper temperature. Lunches came with a large bowl of miso soup, filled with lots of diced tofu and black seaweed. Or you also had the choice of salad instead of soup. Salmon teriyaki lunch, was a bit over-cooked so it was rendered a bit rough on the palate, but still edible though. It accompanied a good quantity of mixed vegetables underneath, like onions, carrots, squash and broccoli. Decor: lots of large live plants line the front windows. Other than that, nothing out of the ordinary. Except for the picture of the lovely lady hanging on the bathroom wall. Service was efficient. read more

The people who worked there are insanely rude and disrespectful lady who took the order was not putting my credit card information incorrectly and after three tries, she refused to do it again. I have been ordering from Hayashi for several years, on a weekly basis. I generally order the same combination meal and always ask that they substitute another roll for the California roll, for which they charge an extra $1. I ordered a couple of weeks ago and my request was not honored, nor was I informed before the order was delivered. There was a note on the receipt that they were unable to substitute. I would have appreciated knowing that in advance because I did not want a California roll and react to ingredients in the surimi used to make it. I wrote to the restaurant about this issue and they never replied. I tried ordering again, noting my allergies and agreeing to pay extra for the substitution. After about 20 minutes, my order was cancelled. I have always had good service and enjoyed the food prepared by Hayashi. However, I will no longer be ordering from them. There are dozens of Japanese restaurants in Brooklyn and none of them refuse to honor my substitution. I guess they no longer want my business. read more

There're a lot of various Asian fusion restaurants that serve sushi in the Sheepshead Bay area but most of them sell affordable but low quality sushi made of frozen, not fresh fish and other cheap ingredients so despite large quantity of such places, it's really difficult to find one that would offer delicious, first rate sushi and seafood products. Hayashi opened up many years ago and still seem to maintain a great reputation by serving delectable sushi made out of premium quality ingredients and other staple Japanese and Asian dishes such as hibachi, pad thai, donburi-delicious Japanese rice bowl dish consisting of either fish or meat, various veggies, steamed together and served with savory sauces. My personal favorite is Unagi don-steamed white seasoned rice topped with grilled fillets of eel covered by a sweetened soy based sauce and garnished with Japanese style pickled vegetables that compliment the sweet, slightly smoky flavor of the fish and add an interesting crunchy texture to the whole dish. Anyways tonight we ordered Sushi Pizza and it was true flavor and taste explosion-perfect combination of grilled eel, avocado, masago, cream cheese served on a scrumptious, crispy pancake and covered with a few different sauces. 10 out of 10-delicious, filling, portion big enough to share and very satisfying. Spicy Salmon tartar definitely didn't disappoint as it was made with the very fresh chopped salmon, mixed with an amazing spicy mayo type of sauce and addition of masago caviar plus quail egg perfectly married all the flavors and textures-10 out of 10, spectacular, definitely will order again. Hayashi salad had a combo of 4 different salads in 1-kani, spicy tuna, fried salmon skin and a seaweed, was served on the bed of avocado and overall tasted great except for 1 minus-mediocre quality of a fried salmon skin which wasn't consistent, some pieces were deliciously crunchy and very tasty while others were overly dry and practically impossible to chew- 7 out of 10, they definitely need to work on improving the quality of salmon skins. Finally we wanted to try a Hibachi style noodles and it was great-yummy, not oily or greasy, full of that unique hibachi flavor, had perfect veggie to noodles ratio and was generously sized. Overall very satisfying dinner experience, fabulous raw fish and seafood dishes, delicious noodles, definitely recommend Hayashi to everyone as they have a vast menu which would satisfy any craving or dietary preference. read more

I hate to make decent neighborhood restaurants seems pedestrian or ordinary, in a bad way, but Hayashi is your typical run of the mill 50% off/inexpensive sushi restaurant .... and it was good. My wife and I dropped in for lunch on a Saturday afternoon and were seated immediately. As expected at the time of the day, the restaurant wasn't crowded, but did have a few parties inside. The menu was pretty straightforward and typical for a local sushi restaurant. There were plenty of appetizers, sushi rolls, special rolls, sushi and specials to choose from. Since it was still lunch time, we went for the lunch special of getting 3 rolls for $9, which is a "good" deal these days. It also came with a miso soup or salad, which we both went with the soup. We were tempted by the $10 lunch box specials, but we were just cravvving sushi. We ended ordering pretty common rolls, such as, eel avocado, spicy tuna, spicy yellowtail, etc. I ordered regular cut rolls, while she ordered 3 hand rolls. To sum it up, it was allll good. No complaints as the sushi was delicious. We do have 1 observation though, and that is, it seemed that the hand rolls actually had much more stuffing other than rice, while the cut rolls obviously had more rice. So keep that in mind when deciding what type of roll you want. The service was spot on and fast throughout our meal. The waitresses were always on top, maybe a bit too eager, to fill our tea cups whenever they were a bit depleted, but everything else was perfect. I always love a mix of sashimi and sushi rolls to get some variety. They have the salmon's lover where there is a few pieces of salmon sashimi, few salmon rolls and salmon sushi. That is if you are really into salmon. I was bit disappointed at the takoyaki balls because it was just deep fried with no sauce and bonita flakes on the top. They have sweet chili sauce on the side for dipping. The AC was not that cool, it was on but I still felt hot. You will smell all the body odors in that restaurant. Was in the mood for sushi so I wanted to try out the sushi they had here for lunch. Tiny restaurant with some available street parking if you look hard enough. It was not too busy when I came into the store to order the rolls, but I thought it was a good idea to call beforehand to speed up the process and just pick up the food. The prices of the rolls range from $2 to $4, which is pretty standard. I took the sushi home and plated it on a dish to simulate that restaurant experience from home. I ordered some spicy salmon, eel avocado, and tuna avocado, and they all tasted delicious and fresh. This is a very late review but I still felt compelled to write it for my fellow Brooklynites in the Sheepshead Bay area who are looking for a reliable place to get cheap, fresh sushi! I ordered a large amount of sushi for my birthday celebration with my family at the end of July. Hayashi has a variety of regular rolls for the jaw-dropping price of $2.75-3.50. A few of the ones I ordered were the eel avocado, spicy tuna, Philadelphia, and ebi tempura. All were artfully prepared, and tasted on par with what I've had at other sushi restaurants in Brooklyn. I have to say that the presentation and quality of the fish used in more upscale sushi places is superior, but Hayashi is definitely great for those looking for the tried-and-true standard rolls. read more

I came home early from work and was craving for japanese food. I would like try another japanese place other than the one near me. So I pulled out my phone, open the yelp app and search for one. And here I am... leaving a review for Hayashi. From the outside, the decor/signage is pretty simple. And with the big letter 'A' displayed on the window this convinced me to try out this place. After looking at the menu, which boasted a huge selection of food, I ordered the Shrimp and Salmon hibachi and my wife got the Nebayaki Udon and some sushi rolls. All of the food were served under 15 minutes. Pretty fast eh? :) The soup was hot and so does my hibachi. My 3 year daughter enjoyed the miso soup that comes with our meal. Artistic style was nicely done for my hibachi plate... but I'm not sure if that flower on my plate is edible. The waitress is very accommodating, smiles and prompt on our needs. The ambiance I can say is very japanese. One thing I didnt like is they didn't clean up the wet floor under the table right away. Probably those are melted snow from the customers' shoes. Still, I still highly recommend this place for japanese food lover like me who are in a $$ budget. =D read more

I have finally found my new local sushi spot! I've been on the hunt ever since my two (I won't name any names. I'm not vindictive like that) reliable sushi sources became non-reliable when they left a bad taste in my mouth. Literally. So thanks to Yelp and all of my lovely fellow Yelpers, I found Hayashi. They have great lunch specials, like sushi sets, or sushi rolls - which range from $8-$10. If you're one of those non-raw fish eaters, they have plenty of options for you too, such as teriyaki, tempura, and hibachi. Shumai came with a thinnest dumpling dough, I didn't even feel it when was enjoying my shrimps shumai. But Duck roll did it for me. Freshly grilled duck, greens and mango wrapped with soft rice paper and served with chef's special sauce that sweet and super spicy, which giving u and opportunity to control on how much do u need to add to your roll, depend on your taste buds. Friday night and the place is packed, I had to wait a few minutes for a seat and you can see the 4 guys at the sushi counter churning out orders while the phone rings off the hook. I have been here before dozens of times, the fish is fresh and the prices are reasonable, so I don't mind waiting. To get the weekend really started I order a small (300ml) bottle of Junmai sake for $12. Now the lady in the corner table is irate, she is going off on the staff "I had to wait 8 minutes for the check, what is wrong with you people. Don't you know I have a food blog with thousands of readers." Meanwhile her 4 kids are running all around the place, sneezing and bumping into tables, but I pay them no mind. As I dig in to sashimi and several rolls, one made with black rice. The table behind me liked the look of our Summer appetizer, which was different types of fish in rice paper, that they decided to order it themselves. Now a happy gentleman in the corner of sushi bar, is just raving about how much he loves the place and how everyone should sit at the sushi bar and watch the chef's knife work. The lady with the foodblog chimes in "this place is terrible, we had to wait 8 minutes and they forgot the bento box." The guys is sincere, "if you don't like the food I will pay for it." The couple behind me speaks up, "I have been coming here for 15 years an the food is excellent" "Lady we are not going to miss you or you or your blog when you are gone." Hayashi is next to our house so we always eat here or order for delivery. Their delivery service is really bad. They forgot kani salad in our orders TWICE!!! Phone was always busy so we had to walk there and told them about the missing orders. This time I ordered on a Wednesday night and it took them 1h20 to deliver the food. They didn't forget anything but there was a ridiculous thing they CHARGED, $2/2 SPICY MAYO!!!! Seriously? Who charges for spicy mayo? It looked good when I opened up the containers, but after trying each roll they all tasted bland and mushy.It's almost like getting sushi from a low end Chinese place. They definitely use MSG as I saw how thick the beef negimaki sauce was. I am drooling while thinking about what to write...that is how good this place is! My aunt had stublmed upon Hayashi a while back and warned me that I HAD to try it when I came to town. I was in town vistiing family from California where we are snobs about sushi... This place was literally one of the BEST sushi spots I have EVER tried. The fish was so incredibly fresh that it melted in your mouth. It was my first time trying scallop sashimi and it was like butter... so smooth and even a little sweet. I also LOVED the mango roll. The sweetness added the perfect flavors to compliment the fish. And the Uni was on point as it had just came in fresh that day. The service was great as well. My ONLY complaint was they played the same song on repeat which got annoying. Either way, I will definitely be coming back next time I am in Brooklyn! read more
