I went to Hapa PDX on a rainy day, which is a perfect day for a bowl of ramen! It was my first time there. The location was a bit confusing on the map. In some places it was listed as Hapa PDX, while in others it showed up as PDX Ramen & Whiskey. I arrived around 3:30 pm, so there was no wait at all. Inside is pretty casual with bar seats and tables. They also had an outside covered sittings. The main chef and our server were both very friendly. When they found out it was our first visit, they helped us choose from the menu and explained each dish in detail. All the dishes were very tasty, and each one had a unique twist that I did not expect from the name, in a good way. The G Special Ramen had a nice kick, and the mushrooms in it were very juicy and flavorful. Pork nuggets were a bit too fatty for me. The tonkotsu ramen was not just a rich, milky pork broth. It had a chili oil twist that made it more interesting. The chashu was also unique. It seemed like the pork was grilled once more in the oven, giving it a crispy exterior. Their daily special bao was excellent as well. They mentioned that all the pickles and ingredients in the bao are made in-house. And its gochujang based sauce was very tasty. Overall, while every dish was different from what I expected from the names, it all had a flavorful and unexpected twist, and the meal was truly delightful. read more

My partner and I brought his grandmother here for a belated birthday dinner, and overall we had a nice experience. We both ordered the G Special ramen, and it was rich, flavorful, and super comforting -- definitely the highlight of the meal. His grandmother got the Shoyu ramen and really enjoyed it; she said the broth was light but still full of flavor. We tried a couple of appetizers, and this is where things were a bit mixed. The pork belly tasted good but the portion size was disappointing for the price. The tofu appetizer, on the other hand, was actually pretty solid -- crispy, well-seasoned, and a nice start to the meal. I also got an iced matcha tea, and that ended up being a pleasant surprise. It had a smooth flavor and wasn't overly sweet, which I really appreciated. Overall, the ramen and drinks were delicious, the atmosphere was relaxed, and it made for a good family outing. Hapa recently dropped the "hapa" name off the sign out front. Not sure if they have new owners or what, but I came through recently to pick up some takeout ramen. As I enjoyed a nice Japanese whisky while I waited for the order, I enjoyed the cozy vibes of the space and chatted with the bartender. I really like this spot. This was my first time getting takeout ramen (anywhere). It was packaged very carefully and made ur back to my house in great shape, broth still piping hot and delicious. I had the OG tonkotsu, my wife the regular tonkotsu and our guest had the veggie miso option. Everyone loved their selection. read more

I probably order hapa at least once a month. I haven't been to their restaurant to dine in as this year has been the year of the take out for me and my family. Their take out is quick, effortless, and easy to serve once home. Their menu is small, but mighty. I often order the g-special. I finally gave this place another chance after not coming here for a few years due to the inconsistency of their ramen broth. When I first tried this place 5 years ago, it was phenomenal so naturally I returned a few time. Every-time I ordered a bowl of their tonkotsu, it came out tasting different than the last. I finally got tired of the inconsistency & never returned at least until last night. Last night I decided to give this place another try. This time around I ordered the spicy ahi poke nachos to start & a G-special ramen. The poke nachos were yummy, it had onions, creamy slices of avocado, tiny cherry tomatoes, cucumber slices paired with taro chips. My only complaint is that I paid $20 for it & barely got any poke. They sat the poke on a bed of lettuce to make it appear like there was more poke. If it was cheaper, I could justify the portion but for $20, I was expecting a little more. There was so much salad & chips & barely any poke. The G-special was alright. Not exactly my cup of tea. The broth had a nice kick but all I could taste was the sesame oil. The egg also was sweet, not like soy sauce sweet but just sugary sweet. I really wish my experience here was better this time around but to me, it was the nail in the coffin which sucks because I absolutely love what they are doing here. my son and I ordered take out from Ramen and Whiskey. my son got the g special and I got the curry ramen. the best way I could describe the taste of the curry ramen was nightmarish. instead of a ghoul or goblin haunting me in my sleep it was the most watery and flavorless ramen you could ever imagine. my son said the G special was alright but could've had more flavor and less water as well. also when we stopped in to pick up our order, you could sense the entitlement in the owners demeanor as he walked through the restaurant with his water ramen eating grin of self love. he seemed like he's more proud of the teslas in his parking lot than the taste of his food. terrible. we're gonna try the new bagel spot next door next time. read more

Went to check out this ramen spot and it is definitely a spot to go to when the weather becomes really cold and you need something that helps you become cozy! I recommend try looking at the menu ahead of time since you need to order first before getting seated. They have a simple food menu but delicious in all the right ways, and cocktail menu is also a nice selection. Tried the Chicken Karraage Curry Bowl and the G Ramen both great! Curry is nicely cooked and flavorful with its spices and chicken is super tender. The ramen hit the spot to keep me warm but very savory and soft meat and just the right amount of everything. I've been to Hapa Ramen a few times because it's in the same general area that I live in Southeast Portland. I like that it's also a whisky bar so makes it fun to have cocktails when dropping in for ramen for dinner. They also have poke bowls but I've never gotten them, but I like that it's an option for a bit of that Hawaiian vibe. Overall the ramen broth and noodles are great. I recently tried the Hokkaido Miso ramen and it was milky and tasty, and the noodles are crinkly and chewy. I thought the thinly sliced cha shu, though, could be more tender. I think the go-to ramen is definitely their G-special, which gives a bit more variety of toppings. It's a great neighborhood spot for ramen with friendly and quick service. read more

I wanted to like this place, I kinda felt bad for the workers seems like theres alot of issues on the back end. The bartender didn't say a word to me or my partner, we were basically ignored. The host ( maybe owner) seemed to be the only person who knew what was going on. I got the spicy miso with pork belly. It literally tasted like top ramen. Some of the noodles were crunchy. There was literally no flavor besides sodium and the pork belly also had no flavor at all. I will say i have a higher spice tolerance but this was pretty unacceptable for 20 bucks a bowl. Great ramen shop. I've been going here since the first month it opened. I've had all of their ramens and all of the broths are fantastic. My favorite is the G-Ramen and the Tonkatsu. The broths are deep and rich highlighted with pickled shiitake mushrooms. Service is always friendly and helpful. It's a classic ramen shop. No real frills but always welcoming. I would always pass by this ramen shop and be intrigued by the "ramen, poke, and whiskey" written in large letters on the window. Although it seems small and not very busy, I was fairly surprised dining in. Walking in, just before dinner rush, it was quiet, small, and had few people. However, within 30 minutes to an hour, the place became packed and there was no seating (it was a surprise there was no line for a wait). The inside was intimate and dim lighting, but had plenty of seating. Service here was fairly quick and so kind. My friend and I both had curry dishes, taro chips, and pork belly. Although all of the dishes came in HUGE portions and were delicious, my favorite was the taro chips and poke. I've never eaten poke in such a way and the use of taro chips was amazing. Fun, friendly, and fabulous food! My husband and I stopped in here for dinner and didn't know exactly what to expect. We were delighted! It was very busy, but the server took our order quickly and got us seated. You order at the counter and then they bring the food and drinks to you. For drinks, my husband got the Sake Lime, which was brisk sweet, and got the Manhattan, which was the perfect balance of smoky and sweet. Our entrees were the G-Special Ramen and the Shoyu and they were both fantastic. The G-Special has a rich, umami flavor with just a little heat and the Shoyu was rich and flavorful. I am sitting at the bar of this place right now. I was told they would be right with me. I watch them help walk-in customers one after another. Finally they ask how they might be able to help me. I order a cocktail. And a menu. Evidently I was supposed to have known those were on the counter a few feet away from where I am sitting. I pay for the cocktail with cash, because I am unusually cash flush at the moment. I say I am wanting to place an order to go. I really want to order food to go for my family. But. They are so busy chatting with each other they seemingly forget I wanted to order food. I overhear many convos that would be better said behind doors or in the back room. No one returns to see what I want to order to go. Noone will make eye contact even though I am sitting right in front of them. I know I could have ordered Uber eats or some other delivery service but I chose to come to this spot in my neighborhood, Have a drink while they make the food and then take it home to the hungry family. We came on by at 2PM on a Sunday afternoon. Parking is a bit hard to come by in this area, so we circled around a few times until we found a spot in front of the restaurant. It's a smaller establishment, order at the counter, then they'll seat you and bring your your food. We sat at the ramen bar. Service was prompt. We ordered the G-Special and Tonkotsu ramens. When the bowls came out, it smelled very aromatic! The G-Special mushrooms were pickled(?) as well as the sprouts. The chunks of pork belly were savory. Noodles has a great bite and chewiness to it. The broth had depth! Be careful because the g-special broth had a chunk of ginger that I bit into. The tonkotsu broth was phenomenal! The big pieces of pork belly were amazing. The space is a bit small, but they have a nice big bar with bar seating and outdoor tables that were good for the summertime! This time I came in, I ordered the G-Special which is a rich pork belly broth topped with belly nuggets, shiitake, spicy sprouts, spinach, and a marinated egg, and the Tonkotsu which is Pork bone broth topped with cha shu pork, menma, and marinated egg. We are Hawaii transplants and always on the search for food that reminds us of home. I was looking for a ramen place since it's still in the 40-50 degree weather range in the middle of May and this place popped up on my Yelp. There is a small parking lot here that accommodates around 5 to six cars, other than that you can find street parking. When we walked in we were greeted right away. You have to order your food first before you can sit which makes sense since there are a limited amount of seats. I got the G Ramen and my bf got the Tonkatsu ramen. Yes the ramen here is delicious! They use sun noodle brand ramen which reminds us of being back home in Hawaii. The g ramen had mushroom, bean sprouts, green onion and delicious pork belly nuggets. The broth was very flavorful down to the last drop. My bf enjoyed his ramen as well and he also was able to order an old fashioned to enjoy alongside the ramen. We got to meet the owner who is also from the same island that we came from. Very nice guy! The staff was very nice, the place was clean, our food came quickly and was delicious! Unfortunately can't recommend this place. The service was lovely, and they're very efficient, but the food quality wasn't something I'd come back for. I can't speak to their poke bowls, and maybe those are a little better, but we ordered the G-Special Ramen. I figured with it being a special, and the first thing on the menu, that hopefully it was something they were most proud of. I couldn't finish my bowl, sadly. Service: 5/5 - attentive, efficient ordering system where you pay first and then go to your table. We were seated at the ramen bar which was super quick, and the food came quickly. Staff was very friendly! Food: 2/5 - the best thing about the ramen was probably the pork belly. Unfortunately everything else was subpar. The pickled vegetables would probably have been better as a side, but there was so much in the ramen that it was very sour as a whole. The noodles were a bit dense, and the soup broth was quite oily. I usually like to drink the broth after finishing the noodles, and I just didn't want to with the oil and the sourness from the vegetables. The soft boiled egg was good though. I will say the Ahi poke was spicy for anyone that is not a spicy fan that may be a deterrent, but I LOVE spice and thought it was perfect! The G-special Ramen is very pork-centric but also fabulously flavored! Their pork belly is DEVINE! Perfectly juicy and crispy all at the same time. And it was VERY reasonably priced! Came here on Grand Opening night. They had $1 off appetizers. The procedure: Walk in, order at the counter, then wait to be seated. After seating, they will bring your food over. Grab your own water and utensils are at your table. (However, they will bust your table). Since it was grand opening day, we waited about 25 minutes before receiving our G- Special Ramen $13. The ramen was the first one listed on the menu, so all three of us got one to try along with the kar-age shoyu-ginger marinated fried chicken $5 (original price $6) - it basically comes with 6 pieces of chicken: good presentation, nice flavor. The G-Special Ramen: the pork belly broth was WAY TOO salty! I really liked the ramen, but with a salty broth, it really ruins the palate. We brought it up to our server and she offer to remake it with less salt. We took up her offer. After we received the new soup; it was better, but I do have to say, the broth was a bit on the oily-end (see photo). The rest of the ingredients were flavor flavorful. Cute place, nice location. Friendly service. Street parking. I really want to make this my SE "to-go" ramen place, but based off of first impression from last night's meal, I will most likely not come back. read more

Overall: Love that southeast Portland now has a "decent" ramen place but I still may make the drive to Beaverton for better ramen from time to time. Parking/Location: There's not much around it, but you can't miss it because it's on the corner. They don't have a private parking lot, so you'll have to find street parking which shouldn't be that bad. Menu/Food: They have a very simple menu which is great! However, the soup base on the G-Special Ramen was very oily and salty. They were willing to replace it for us but that ended up not having much flavor. My guess is it could have been a fresh batch of soup so it didn't settle. The mushroom had a little bit of citrus taste which was great. The noodles were made to perfection, not too soft, not too hard. Our appetizer, Kara-Age wasn't crunchy on the outside but I do tend to like things on the crunchy end. Service: It's an interesting concept here, you order up front like a McDonalds and then wait to be seated once your food is almost ready. Don't know if this was due to their grand opening but it was really smart concept that I haven't seen before. read more

Tried three of Hapa PDX's bowls -- ahi poke (Hawaiian-style garlic ahi with sweet onion over greens), salmon poke (cured salmon with cucumber, jalapenos, tomatoes, topped with ikura) and the karaage bowl (shoyu-ginger marinated fried chicken with rice and ginger curry topped by an egg). Of the three the karaage bowl was the best and most flavorful. The pokes were disappointing and fairly flat. No sauce to speak of, and pretty ordinary, tasteless white rice. A good poke bowl uses sushi rice or brown rice, sometimes noodles or greens. Hapa uses ordinary white rice. Nothing stood out here. Overall take: unimpressive. The search for decent poke in Portland continues. read more
