A steady erosion of services and helpful staff. Less and less they are willing to do to help

After experiencing more conventions at different locations, I have to say that this isn't the best place to have one with the amount of guests that this convention attracts. It's not big enough to accommodate all the people and eventually you start to feel like a stuffed sausage. The place is great but it's suitable for smaller conventions. The vendor area is small. The photo area is smaller and it makes everything seem like endless amount of hours. The only positive is the hall size with all the seats. read more

Im not a veteran traveler but this hotel is great. The front desk, esp Donna, helped me correct a mistake I made during check in. She was very helpful in getting my room ready. The room is comfortable and has everything I need. Good thing that the gym is available 24/7 and you can get in the pool as well. Only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is that there's no shuttle service to the airport or closeby train stations, which would help certain travelers in the future. Also there's no restaurants and fast food places nearby. Although far away restaurants will deliver to the hotel and the Irish Pub is good, would be nice to walk out and go somewhere if possible. DEFENITELY need a car up here. read more

I wasn't even greeted. I introduced myself at the front desk and said I was checking in which the desk clerk responded to by saying I need your ID. I gave her my license and she said insert your credit card. I asked what the total was since she didn't give me any kind of documentation. She said it was $199 and that $50 of that was a hold charge. She then said the elevator is over there. I can't say it was bad service. There was NO SERVICE. I called the front desk after we returned from our formal event, and asked if there was coffee available. They said I could go to the bar. My daughter then told me there was a coffee maker under the tv cabinet. Everything in the room was old and dusty. The coffee creamers must have been months if not years old. It was disgusting. There was a hair stuck to the bag that was in the ice bucket. There check in is at 4 and check out is at 11 which is already earlier than normal. The housekeeper knocked on the door at 9:30 and asked me three times if we were checking out. ??? 90 minutes early? Will not be staying again. read more

I do not recommend. When I arrived in my room the balcony door was unlocked. Then, a work associate was given a room that was already occupied by someone. He walked in on a guy. At 5:00am each morning a delivery truck or trash truck ( not sure) showed up. It was really loud and woke me up. Cleanliness was ok, not great. Run, don't walk, away from the Hanover Marriott in Whippany, New Jersey, unless you want a case of Bedbugs, tasteless food, bad service, barely mediocre rooms, and management uninterested in customer service. This hotel deserves no stars. I stayed at this hotel on March 21st and March 22nd, 2019 for a Rotary training. Having been a longtime Marriott fan, and a Platinum Reward Card Holder for many years, I expected the same high quality and service I had been used to. WRONG! SO WRONG! I LEFT WITH BEDBUG BITES THE LENGTH OF THE RIGHT SIDE OF MY BODY (I sleep on my right side). When I saw it on the drive home (it got worse over the next 3 days), I threw away 4 pieces of my luggage, undressed in the garage (so as not to bring anything into my house), dumped every item into a plastic bag and brought it to the dry cleaner. I threw away a number of items of clothing and some cosmetics. I saw my MD four days later and the diagnosis of bedbugs was confirmed. It was really uncomfortable, embarrassing, and the medication to quell the itch made me sleepy for the next 10 days. I missed four days of work. When I called the hotel, (on hold often for more than 30 minutes), it took more than one week for them to return the call. The manager, Dan, told me I probably brought the bedbugs to the hotel and an inspection of the room would have to be made. It took a number of days to get through to them again. Not surprisingly, they did not find evidence of infestation, and they 'didn't know what to tell me!' I persisted and finally got an insurance claim number (never understood why the hotel didn't handle this and I had to do the work). This total lack of customer service continues... The phone number they had given me for the insurance company was the wrong number. More attempts at answers and calls for resolution followed with no success. Three calls to Marriott Customer Service followed with no resolution. The insurance company finally called 5 weeks after the incident. I missed the call. I called back at least 8 different times and tried the supervisor at least 4 times. NO RESPONSE! Back to calling the Hanover Marriott. They told me that this has never happened before with the insurance company, but did nothing to help! I'm still where I was with this situation, two months later. I have documentation of every call and text made to the hotel and to the insurance company, as well as the physician's report for confirmation and diagnosis. What I am asking for is minimal ... my hotel charges refunded, my Bonvoy points retained, my dry cleaning paid for, replacement of my luggage, and payment for the cosmetics, and garments I had to throw away, and lost wages. This should have been over and done with 2 months ago, and this Marriott and their management should be ashamed at their attitude and lack of interest in decency and customer service. Dan, the Manager at this property, is a Rotarian. Perhaps someone should re-familiarize him with the Rotary 4 Way Test. Stay away from this hotel! Update - one day after my Yelp review went live, I heard from the insurance company (thank you, YELP!). The offer they made wouldn't even cover replacement of my luggage and the dry cleaning bill I Incurred. Next step - other outlets on social media, the New York/New Jersey news stations - they might find this story interesting! read more

Attended a meeting here and stayed the night. It was fine. Maybe for the price, the quality could have been a bit higher, but no real complaints. I understand a few reviews about things being a bit rundown. While there was wear in the bathroom and a chip on the dresser, they seem to have gone a long way towards updating. Seemed like relatively new carpet, some update fixtures, and nice linens. The beds did not sleep great, but I struggle at hotels anyhow. Pros: Good breakfast buffet with lots of options. Friendly, helpful staff. Ok wifi in rooms. Good onsite restaurant, and good room service Con: No hot tub A bit of wear here and there read more

This hotel has an integrity problem. I had a reservation and after I landed at Newark I used the app to check in. Almost immediately I was called by the hotel telling me that something happened to my room and it needed to be detailed and would not be available. Also something about a wedding, but I didn't understand how that affected my room. They moved me to a Courtyard nearby and gave me 10,000 point. Something didn't sound right to me so since I'm a Titanium Elite Member, I called the info number. I was then given 2 excuses why my reservation was canceled. First they finally admitted they were overbooked. They they said they were taking care of me because there was a large wedding party staying at the hotel and were quite loud and I wouldn't sleep well. This is not a corporate property. It is a franchise. Only stay here if you want to roll the dice. read more

Really nice, clean, large hotel. The rooms were tidy and it was easy to get here from EWR airport. I attended a private dinner in one of the back conference/meeting rooms and the staff were attentive and the food was yummy (and they had a good alternate vegetarian option for me). The wine was great. I also ate at the Auld Shebeen Irish Pub restaurant for a separate meal (lunch) and was pleasantly surprised. There is a fitness room, business center, reliable wifi, good cable. Updated lobby and event rooms don't compensate for bad service. Employees both at the front desk and those we encountered during our event in the gallery room were so unwelcoming and rude. The rooms and hallways were your standard cheap hotel style, but for a luxury price. Will not be returning. read more

Stayed here for a wedding and was very disappointed. We were apart of a wedding block, my room wasn't cleaned and when I complained to the desk, they told me they'd take care of it. However, all that was done is that there was clean towels thrown on the end of the bed. When I asked the desk again they just shrugged. When i checked in, i was told there was no extra charges added to my card as i had paid upfront. However when i checked our, i found out I was charged $15 a day even though i was told differently. Horrible customer service I've never had an experience like this at a Marriott and it's making me second guess ever coming back to one. read more

I've stayed at this hotel twice (for 4 days at a time) over the last 2 years, and I've got to say - it's one of the nicer hotels I've used. First off, they keep this place spotless. I don't think I can recall a single time where I walked around my stay, and DIDN'T see someone vacuuming, dusting, mopping, etc. Either they have an enormous maintenance crew, or their staff are in fact highly trained ninjas - the dirt didn't stand a chance. The decor is "modern", to say the least, with a huge chandelier in the lobby with what looks like 400 glass "eggs" hanging from it. Real funky, but tasteful. The clean feeling is further elaborated on by a bright white paint coat. There's even an automated wine bar if you feel like relaxing in the lobby with friends over a few glasses - just be warned that it's not cheap. To the right of the lobby is a nice restaurant, The Auld Shebeen (see my other review), and is worth a visit. The rooms are clean and comfortable, although don't depict the same modern feeling as the lobby does - fairly standard decor, here. The beds however are incredibly comfortable, and I sleep like a baby on them. There's something to be said here, since very few hotels have I ever gotten a decent night's sleep at, with this being one of them. The provided amount of pillows alone was enough to build a small pillow fort out of, if you so desired. Oh, and they're comfy, too. I attended an event here, and the staff of the hotel were more than courteous, even when some lunatic from a wedding party had a few too many jaeger bombs and decided to pull the fire alarm at ~3AM. Not the hotel's fault, and to my knowledge they even asked the wedding party to leave the next day, due to the ruckus. All in all, very professional staff. Event / ballrooms were comfortable and well air conditioned, and catered events were tasty as well. My only complaint is that the wifi is very spotty, and they should look at their coverage grid a bit, to ensure signal penetrates all rooms. Either way, I look forward to my next stay here. read more

Hanover Marriott is near the I-287 / Rt 10 intersection, so it is easily accessible by road. If you're heading westbound on Rt 10 though, you'll have to use the Dryden Way jughandle to get to the eastbound side of Rt 10, where the hotel is, unless you know the back way in through Ridgedale Avenue and Wing Drive. In most respects, this is a fantastic-looking hotel. The lobby area is bright and open, although some of the decor is a bit odd. (Rattan balls? Metal boats?) They also have a lovely and well-tended garden and fireplace just out the door from the lobby area. The front desk and general hotel staff are courteous and will often say hello or wish you a good morning as you enter or pass by. Rooms are fairly decent, with comfortable beds and good pillows. In addition, a microwave oven and fridge were provided, although I'm not sure if those were available in every room. Unfortunately, I noticed the bathroom, at least in my room, didn't have an exhaust system, so it took a while for humidity (or odors, as the case may be) to dissipate. Where the hotel fell down this year though, in comparison to the previous three years I stayed here, is in housekeeping. Perhaps housekeeping was understaffed but I noticed they were very late in making the room. One day, the housekeeping lady only got to our room when it was close to 7pm and shut me out of the bathroom, insisting that she only had 10 minutes to finish the job! Also, housekeeping never replaced the used-up soap and shampoo the whole time we stayed there. This year, they changed the WiFi internet policy so you can get free access if you are a Marriott Rewards member. That is a step in the right direction, although I don't see why they couldn't just provide it to every hotel guest, whether rewards member or not. It always seemed funny to me that cheaper motels have free WiFi while higher-end hotels are inclined to put some conditions or fees on it. read more

I just stayed at the hotel last weekend and was slightly disappointed. I had an issue checking into the hotel with the rate that I was paying. As i mentioned in my earlier review the only reason i stay at the hotel is to use the pool. When I checked in on Friday I went to go to the pool with my kid and there was a party going on by the pool. This was a formal party with tables lined up and food. There were no signs saying that the pool was closed for a private party, but it would have been weird staying in he pool area. I went down several hours later and there were still people and food on the tables. Basically I paid for a night to stay at the pool to swim earlier in the afternoon which i was not able to. The room this time was nice, but not on the floor I had requested. I was told in check in that there were a couple of events and the 8th floor would be loud. They suggested I stay on the 5th floor. Well this is the floor with all the Tweens running up and down the halls. I still like the hotel and will stay there in the future. I just was disappointed this time around. Hopefully the next time I can bring them back up to the 5 stars that there were in my mind before. read more

The hotel charges you $15 to park in their parking lot. It's not a valet service, they don't have a parking garage. If you have a car, you have to pay an extra $15. If you enjoy obnoxious drunks coming out of the bar in the lobby, this may be the place for you. Myself, I will avoid it like the plague. read more

It's interesting where this hotel is situated by a very busy road, similar to "Expressways". As we were getting close to the hotel, we had to exit a mile or two up and loop around to get to the hotel. Once you get on the same side as the hotel, slow down because you might miss the entrance! My cousin who got married in the area had a block of rooms at this hotel and their venue was at the Crystal Plaza hotel. They had set-up a shuttle service for their hotel guests which was super helpful for those partying it up. The hotel itself was really nice, lots of natural light coming in the lobby area. I can tell the hotel has been thru renovations. Staff is very nice and friendly, everyone from the front desk, restaurant, and housekeeping. We drove from NYC and wasn't able to do laundry but was pleasantly surprised this hotel has FREE use of their washing machines and dryers on the 2nd floor. All you pay for is the detergent and dryer sheets which just a $1.00 each at the gift shop. Also nice they offer free coffee and tea in their lobby area by the computers to check in your flight or just surf the web. Also had breakfast at their restaurant which was pretty good. The croissants were unforgettable, tasted really good. Wish I had some nutella to go with the croissants. The restaurant had a private room for the wedding party, I believe the capacity of the room can fit about 25+ people in rounds. Also during our stay I noticed another wedding going on, seems like this hotel is great to hold weddings as well. read more

I've stayed here a few times while traveling between California and New Jersey for work. Unfortunately this particular hotel fails to meet the Marriott service standards that you can find in many of the other chain hotels. This time they placed me in a room that had no heat; having turn the thermostat up to 80 and still freezing because temperatures dropped to 35 that evening, I called the front desk. Long story short, 10 PM , I am moving all of my things to a room that smells like a war happened between a pair of feet and a cheap bottle of cologne. The service is kind and the pub/restaurant is ok, but overall it's less than what I've come to expect of this chain. read more

Stayed here two nights for a wedding we were invited too. Walking in you can't help be notice the modern decor. The chandlier, art painting, wine bar area. Everything was so nicely decorated. They have an Irish pub to the right and several conferece/ballrooms available. Everyone at the front desk is very welcoming and outgoing. They were very quick and we got our key to the room super fast. We had room 550. One thing that stopped me from giving this place a 4-star was the room. Walking in it was freezing. It was a constant battle with the AC. It we would put it up to 70 degrees it was hot and if we put it on 68 degrees it was extremely cold. At night it would adjust itself on its own and we were sweating! Another thing was the restrooms. There was no fan so everytime you showered it was so steamy and you would come out sweating. There was no air circulation in there. This is the first time I have ever been to a hotel and the restrooms not having a fan. Overall, the place is nice and service is great. Close to the town were visiting (Warren). It was super clean as well. read more

I am troubled giving this hotel two stars. The entrance is very nice. Greeted and treated well upon arrival. Room smells stale. Eh I can deal with it. In the morning the cleaning crew arrived and is in the hallway. I'm on conference calls and suddenly smell bad body odor. I'm looking around and actually smelled myself. Nothing. I'm on the conference call and suddenly I smelled it strongly coming under the door. It was the cleaning crew. They smelled horrible. I put a towel at the door sill. Stopped it from coming through. I left to go to the gym and the hallway was overwhelming. The gym was filthy. I was supposed to do cardio and floor work. The floor was filthy and smelled foul. read more

This was my first time staying at a hotel proper, as I rarely travel. Having come from Canada to meet with friends attending a convention here, I wasn't sure what to expect. The Hanover Marriott turned out to be virtually ideal. Rooms were comfortable and clean, with more than enough amenities for our weekend stay. Staff were friendly and while housekeeping were clearly ESL, so were they. The only issues we had were regarding the AV console for the TV. It would cut out from time to time, and because they're using some kind of encoder for its connection to the TV, bypassing it was impossible. Calling the front desk for support resulted in a visit from a gentleman who declared the problem was with our computers' screensavers; Neither had one set. We eventually settled on ordering a movie from the Marriott instead, but for $18.99, all we got was a movie that couldn't be paused, broadcast to us in standard definition analogue. Not impressed with that. If you attend the Marriott, be aware that the AV consoles may not function as expected, and that the in-room movies are poor quality. Beyond that, expect a very pleasant stay. read more

I came here back in November for a function in one of the halls and everyone had a great time. The staff were very attentive and kind and we were pleased with the service. The dining hall was clean as well and big enough for the function we were attending. I would definitely attend another function here! read more

This place needs renovations. Though they've been working on the lobby, they really should focus on the rooms. They've definitely got a retro feel to them, and I don't mean retro chic. The rooms have that warm 80's yellow glow about them but at least they're clean. The TV is far from modern, but hopefully you're not there to watch the big game. All in all, this seems to be the recurring theme for hotels around here--old and in need of help. One nice perk is, if you've got status the concierge room has a good variety of snacks and drinks available. Breakfast in the morning is also good. But really, if you're here on business and can expense it, I'd recommend the nearby Westin over this Marriott. read more

We make use of the hotel rooms and the conference space - and every year these guys have been absolutely amazing towards me, my team, and our guests. The front desk is always helpful, their events team have been nothing short of amazing, and their restaurant is absolutely the best. I couldn't be happier! I had an extremely negative experience at this property over Thanksgiving weekend. While at the property, my vehicle was broken into overnight. There was considerable damage to my vehicle and all four of my wheels are removed and taken. Upon reporting the incident to hotel management, I was informed that an internal investigation had been started and that nothing else could be done at that time. I requested that senior management from hotel contact me on the following Monday to discuss the issue at hand and was told this would occur. At the point of writing this review, no one from the hotel property has contacted me. I have reached out to them seeking a response and they immediately forwarded me to the "insurance agent." The hotel, nor their agent, have offered any assistance whatsoever in this matter and are being obstructive in my efforts to resolve this issue. I do not recommend this property as one that is safe or secure for any person or their property. read more

I have been coming to the Hanover Marriott on a regular basis for eleven years. In that time, I've probably generated 700-800 cumulative room bookings for my corporate events at Hanover Marriott. For the last few months, I do everything possible to avoid staying at this location thanks to their new deceptive policy of charging $15.00 per day if you need to park a vehicle in their massive, oversized lot. This is not part of the nightly charge, but a mandatory charge they only tell you about once you check in. They claim it is to provide 'security' for the parking lot however I have never seen a security officer (and I've been looking). In addition, they have signs posted to park at your own risk. This is a deceptive charge that is being applied and is akin to a nightly rate hike. They should simply be honest and raise the nightly rate. They also need to declare that there is an additional charge for parking, which at least in corporate concur travel systems does not appear. Thanks to what I consider anti-customer dishonesty, I will only stay here if it is a last resort. I'll be willing to bet $15.00 the Hanover Marriott attempts to have this post pulled down. read more

Have stayed here numerous times. This stay (2/16-2/18) I had a charge from the hotel bar added to my bill that I didn't make. Contacted the hotel and they said that I would have to talk to their accounting department in order to get my bill adjusted. I was transferred and left a voice message...no one returned my call. Waited two days, called again, voice mail again, left message again, no return call. Still waiting on staff to return my call. Advice here is get a paper copy of your bill before leaving the property. Do not op for the electronic version as it takes 2days to be posted to your Marriott Rewards account. read more

Drove down to visit my nephew. I put the address from their website into the GPS but when it said I had arrived I was at the Red Carpet Inn. Since my iPhone didn't get me to the correct spot I put the address into the navigation system in my car. After a lot of driving to get me on the correct side of the road, the car's navigation system took me right back to the Red Carpet Inn. From the Inn I could see a sign above the hotel (which you cannot see as you approach the hotel from the correct side of the road) so I tried again. Thought I had gone too far so I pulled into a large shopping center, parked my car and called my nephew. I told him I was standing outside a Chick-fil-A and just wanted to know if I had passed the hotel again or if I should keep on driving. One of the people working the desk told my nephew I shouldn't use the street address but just put Hanover Marriott as the destination. That worked, but I almost missed the entrance to the parking lot as the sign at the entrance was very hard to see. I'm wondering if they know the address doesn't work with GPS systems why their website doesn't tell you not to use the address but rather to use the name of the hotel. read more

Came here for a friend's wedding and the facility was really nice, but the front desk attendant was pretty rude and didn't pay much attention to us at all. I'd expect the front desk concierge to be a smiling positive person, not someone with an attitude about our check in questions. read more

#ConsultantLife has me traveling again, and this time to the NY Metro area. Since the office is not close to the city, the suburbs is where I'm staying. And this hotel is everything suburbs are made of. It's extremely dated (there are still key locks on the door above the key card access), the ceilings are extremely low (when I'm in the gym on the treadmill, I am almost hitting the ceiling), and it LOOKS very dated. There is a decent restaurant in the hotel, with a pretty expansive menu, and there is also and "M Lounge" on the property that is newly renovated. I only wish they could continue the renovations to the room floors and other areas of the property. At over $200/night, this property is not worth the stay. If there is another hotel that you book, I would highly suggest doing so. The staff seems pretty nice, and I haven't had any issues, but given the option to stay elsewhere, I would not return. read more

I was scheduled to stay here last week, and prepaid for my room. When we arrived to check in, we were told that the hotel was full and that they would accommodate us in a Courtyard by Marriott in a neighboring town. I've stayed at both hotels and they're adequate, but not super nice. I chose to book at this Marriott for a reason, and am still trying to get an answer from management about this situation--how do you double-sell a room that has already been reserved and paid for? It was a Seinfeld episode, really--what's the point of making a reservation if it doesn't reserve the room?! read more

Considering the name Marriott, I expected better. Yes the lobby and event rooms are nice but the bedrooms are no better than a holiday Inn or best Western. If your staying 1 night that's fine but if you are planning an extended stay, ie 2+ nights, stay across the street at the Hyatt House. The Hyatt House has full kitchens in the rooms and truly know the meaning of the word suite. read more

We have been a frequent guest at this hotel over the past 5 years, because of its location near family and friends, the great service we had received, and being a Marriott preferred member. Unfortunately our last 2 visits ( this weekend) and in August 2016 were quite disappointing. The hotel has become rundown, the lobby furniture and carpets are visibly stained, the room interiors are dated and worn, the hallways are shoddy, and there are unusual odors in the halls and rooms. The pub is also becoming a dreary place to get a drink or a bite to eat. (It is nothing like a real pub in Ireland.) The guest room had a noticeable odor of cigarette smoke. When we brought it to the attention of the front desk personnel, his response was "I'll let housekeeping know." Also some of the toiletries had been used, and the extra amenities I requested at time of "on-line" check in were not in the room ( even though I requested them a full 7 hours prior to arrival). No apology was received from front desk. This hotel used to be a favorite. We will not be returning and strongly suggest that management consider renovating, as well as improving the customer service training that employees receive. Quite a disappointment. I would have given 0 stars, but that's not an option. read more

Was blown away by the customer service at this hotel. Used this hotel for my wedding guests and was treated first class for the whole weekend. The front desk staff and the sales staff that I dealt with was unbelievable and did not miss a beat with anything. The rooms are also very nice here and they have a great lobby and self serve wine bar. The bar/restaurant is also great to hang out in and they have awesome food. read more
