I ordered phó dac biet and a banh xeo along with a Hanoi variation of a spring roll. I wasn't crazy about the roll, but everything else was delicious. At 9 PM, the waiter put small table lamps on each table and a light show with techno-pop music kicked in. I don't think there's another place in Claremont, south of the 10 fwy, that sells Banh Mi so that's one reason you should go. Their Banh Mi comes in more of a bolillo than a baguette and it tasted fresh. I got the grilled beef Banh Mi and the meat had great flavor, but was a little tougher than I'm used to. I usually get Banh Mi's from Che Cali and I find that their meat is easy to bite through and flavorful. Hanoi's is flavorful, just a little bit a of a pull to break the meat apart, but it's not that bad. I also tried their shrimp and beef spring roll and thought it was fine. Parking was easy to find out front. Inside I was a little confused with the decor, but overall it's fun. There's a Lego Mario at the counter, no clue why, but it's a fun statement piece. I found out this place serves North Vietnam foods and flavors which was intriguing. I ended up ordering 1 Banh Cuon and 1 Pho Chicken. The banh cuon took about 20 mins because it's made to order which was fine with me. It had lots of pork and wood ear filling in a thin layer of steamed rice roll. There were several rolls served with meatloaf and herbs plus bean sprouts along with fish sauce. It was divinely delicious. So was the Pho Chicken. Yum, yum! I saw the chicken oil in the soup. White chicken meat was tender. Herbs were very fresh. It's the real deal. I wish the portions was a bit bigger though. Anyhoo, I would get both items again! Mid pho, expensive entrees, rave vibes, live dj I love the decor of the place with its lego sculptures and statues, but it was hard to see with the rave light visualizers all over the place. I can understand why some people might like it, but not particularly my speed and definitely not what I want when I'm getting late night pho. As I finished, I felt like they rolled over and asked "Was it good for you too?" while I sit staring at my empty bowl, wholly unsatisfied. The broth of the pho is the main factor that differentiates ok places from great places and Hanoi Kitchen is definitely not the latter. The broth was... weak? watery? light? It didn't feel much different from a $5 bowl of pho except the fact that I had to think I was paying almost 4 times as much for it. It wasn't bad per se, but the disappointment I felt as I kept eating, searching for where my money went, and realizing that this was it was a seasoning that turned a middle of the road pho to ash in my mouth.
