The school should be a model for all other schools…read more We just moved here after having a pretty tragic experience at our elementary school in Vegas. My son has vision challenges, and they adamantly refused to do anything, beyond pressure me to medicate him so he would "focus more." Great solution for blindness. ‍ After nearly 2 years of begging for help and watching my son fall further behind, his father and I decided to move to an area that's known for better schools. We would have been grateful for any school that would help even a little bit. But instead, imagine our surprise when we land at Carrillo Elementary, where they have done more for our son in the first week, than the previous school did in two years. The communication is absolutely outstanding. The teachers and staff catch the slightest details and take action to remedy issues. For example, my son started breaking up crayons at his desk. Which principle noticed and made a note to get a fidget sensory tool for him. Since he's very active, she also suggested an exercise band for his seat. What a difference from anything we have remotely experienced. The school honestly makes me so happy, I can tear up just thinking about it. Just knowing how eager they are to help, and how much they care about each and every student, it's a beautiful thing we will never take for granted.

I've worked at lots of schools, and I've seen how, over the years, this school has had a difficult time working with kids who are non-verbal. I haven't seen much progress in particular kids and it has been 3 years of them being there. I think there are other schools that have more staff who can maybe help more in severe cases. If your kid is okay in group classes, though, in general ed or special Ed, then this school is fine.

They were welcoming right off the bat. Mr. Tubbs set up a walk through tour before we decided to buy and his first teacher made him feel so welcome with notes on his desk from every child in the class once we did. COVID hit and he had little opportunity to really connect with new friends, but Carlsbad District has maintained getting these kids safely into in-person class as quickly as possible from the beginning. Mrs. Hartman has seen him through this incredibly confusing year (from at home learning to cohort half in and half out learning to full time all kids in class learning). Kudos to a teacher who successfully navigated all the changes for her kids impeccably, softly and efficiently. He says although he misses his friends, whom are still only 10 minutes away :), he is so glad he made the move. He feels welcomed, comfortable, challenged and accomplished. Not to mention, their PTO gear is pretty awesome!

Pacific Rim is a "California distinguished school": "A California Distinguished School is an award given by the California State Board of Education to public schools within the state that best represent exemplary and quality educational programs. I attribute much of what we love about this school to their wonderful principal, Robert Devich. It's the trickle down effect. This principal has ZERO tolerance for bullying. He enforces the rules here with strength, a love of truth, wisdom and compassion. This man is a loving father in his own life and brings that same level of warmth and accessibility to each of the students. He's a very visible presence on campus and coaches the kids (who need extra help) in math during certain lunch times. The caliber of teachers here is terrific. No disgruntled lifers simply treading water until retirement. They have special side programs designed for the kids at every grade level. These teachers are enthusiastic and dedicated to the kids. Some of them even arrive to school early (every single day) to answer homework questions for their students. Unlike the two other (San Diego) elementary schools our children attended, Pacific Rim's outdoor lunch court is sheltered from the elements with protective patio curtains on all sides as well as a roof overhead. from passing birds. This lunch table set up comes in particularly handy on windy or drizzly days. The kids can eat in comfort and their tables are protected from any possibility of insects as well as from droppings of local birds. Workers scrub off and disinfect every single lunch table at the end of each lunchtime. This school boasts excellent test scores. Their carnivals, numerous special events and family night events (tented sleep overs in the game field) are fun for everyone.

This is our neighborhood school and I am outraged. Our kindergarten son was beaten to a concussion…read morewithin the first 60 days after the school year while a student there. Courageously, he named the two children whom he said beat him and pushed him to down (during which he hit his head), he named an adult that was on duty whom my son claimed told the two children to stop and not to harm him any more, and he told his teacher, AND our son provided a consistent account of the assault to my husband and I, his primary doctor, and the concussion specialist. We'd already informed the school when our son sustained minor injuries in a restroom while children tried to bust in on him in a restroom talk to see his (to keep it PC) " brown genitals. He was teased because of his hair, his skin color, and more. We provided this information to the administration too. Nothing substantial was done. So when it escalated to this, it should have been simple to resolve and we should have received support for our son instead of being treated as if our son was the aggressor. The other two children who were named as those who hurt our son weren't harmed or in any danger at any time. Asking them "did they do it" as if kids don't lie wasn't even an uttered thought when it came to them, yet OUR SON was questioned and indirectly invalidated by the alleged notion that there was no footage of the matter--not to mention the alerting of child protective services after we let the school know that he'd had a concussion --that report was not filed when we first mentioned the incident to the school despite his bruises and our complaints! Yet, somehow school admin. claimed the only video footage they only saw of him that day was him coming into the office (after being prompted to wait there during pickup when his teacher "randomly" left earlier than usual that day). . . Still, no one seemed to notice the bruises on his face (black eyes) and the bumps and burn-like bruises on the back of his close-shaven head (it was hot that day). I am a graduate of this district from the 90's so my evaluation of the district, its history, and demographics are accurate and well-informed. Nobody knows anything, allegedly as they claim. The entire matter is dangerous and disheartening! All in all, the entire matter seems skin-color related (as we are all of the HUMAN RACE, right) retaliation given the admin. had been informed of what happened to our oldest and dared to allow similar treatment to our Kinder son in this way without extending true care and concern in our favor as the injured party. Out of 4 children, the only child I have that hasn't been assaulted in this district is my pre-K son who doesn't attend school in the district. I have material evidence to prove all claims made here, so I accept nothing but an apology for their potential negligence and I will continue to tell our story until our son receives the Justice and equal care he earned!

Our son started going to OPE after beginning in another elementary school in Encinitas in 2nd grade. He was also seemingly unable to control his talking in the new environment, so we had him assessed and placed on a prescription and provided IEP support.
