I'm so happy with Lake. My son has thrived. He entered with an IEP and all of his support staff have been wonderful. He even graduated from his iep this past year. The school and his classes handled learning from home during the pandemic, after an adjustment, very well. I'm extremely happy for him, and for the great teachers, staff and administration here. read more

Our experience is that we have had some caring teachers, there are cool programs, nice people, you can volunteer if you want and dedicate as much time/expertise as you have and the pickup/drop off is the most organized that I've ever seen. I love parts of this school! We love the teachers Mrs. Ashcraft, Mrs. McIlroy and especially Mrs. Vivaldi (She's caring but no nonsense). They are exceptional. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- What you should know... -Backpacks Backpacks(with lunch boxes) are kept outside of the classroom in the hot sun. It fades their backpacks and it puts them at risk of food poisoning. This gives other students that opportunity to access to tamper with your kid's belongings. My son had his lunch stolen repeatedly. Other schools that we've attended, the lunch boxes went to the cafeteria walk-in and backpacks were kept safe in the classroom where they could be monitored. I asked the school and the district to change this policy/practice and they did not. They also did they make an effort to find who was stealing my son's lunch and help that kid get set up on a meal plan. -Bullying Update #1(2017): If you have a kid who is more prone to getting bullied (the perils of raising a nerd kid), it is very frustrating that when concerns are brought to the attention of teachers, you end up having to escalate to the administration because the complaints are either not taken seriously or downplayed. Update #2 (2018): The administration did not put a stop to what was going on. We had to take it to the district. Teachers and administrators are not following their own policies, skirting their responsibilities. Bullying is a huge issue at this school but my belief is that it is because no one is putting their foot down with these kids. How hard is it to just say stop? Keep your hands to yourself? If you can't do that, you have no business working with elementary school kids. You know what we were asking of them that they couldn't follow through with (Mrs. Corso)? Move my son over one or two people away from the person picking on/physically hurting him so that he would have a buffer to settle things down. Something that is almost no effort, common sense. Right? That takes all of what.. a few seconds. But nope, they would not do that. Did they propose a solution? No. Instead it was up to us as a family to find a work around solution to their incompetence. We had to take it all the way up to the district office, for safety reasons we ended up having to pull my kids from choir and having to switch my son's teacher for the remainder of the year. If the individuals involved had done their jobs (teacher, choir director, assistant principal, school counselor and principal), it would have never gone this far. The district needs to clean house and get rid of the staff that refuses to live up to their responsibilities. Update #3 (May 2018): I highly recommend that if you enroll your kids here that you include a note to the school that you do not give permission for Mrs. Herington to interact with your child without being present too. Like we haven't been through enough this school year... Yesterday my son and at least one other kid witnessed another kid repeatedly punching my son's binder until it cracked/broke. The teacher sent both my son and the kid who broke his binder to Mrs. Herington's office to work it out. Instead of addressing the issue with the person who was guilty of committing destruction of personal property, she down played and made excuses for him. She once again made my son feel like he was at fault for complaining, causing him to feel emotional distress that people (who are in charge and supposed to be setting a good example) are not doing the right thing. And what did it teach the other kid? Go ahead and break things, we've got your back. Wow, that kids is going to have a rough time when he grows up and learns that this isn't the way the world works and that there are real consequences. Keep in mind these are 10 year olds/5th graders. They should know better and if not, now is the time to teach them. Not only is the school counselor's response ethically/professionally irresponsible, she completely missed out on making a positive change by making turning this into a learning opportunity, but how many district policies is that in violation of? That's what you get at this school. The district should be embarrassed. -Conclusion This is the worst school and district that we've ever had the displeasure of attending. We've officially transferred out of the district. read more

Great school excellent teachers. My son has gone here every year since kinder and loves it. The traffic in the morning and afternoon is a challenge, but using the park for drop off and pickup has helped. It's been a great learning environment with good opportunities to volunteer. Lake Elementary is a wonderful school! I have a second grader and a kindergartener. All the teachers we've had have been wonderful. Lake is one of the few schools in Vista Unified that have a music program, run by the amazing Mrs. Corso. She is such a huge asset to this school. The school has a very active PTA, which funds some awesome events throughout the year. Trunk-or-Treat was a huge success this year, along with Read-a-thon. The PTA also sponsors several clubs throughout the year. My boys have LOVED run club this year! The administration is very engaged and supportive of teachers, staff, students, and parents. I am so happy to be a part of the Lake community. read more

We love Lake elementary and are really happy our son is attending the school. We were unsure what to expect after seeing a few negative reviews, but since there weren't many and those were from several years ago we wanted to try Lake out for ourselves and are so happy we did . We had recently bought a home in the area and enrolled our son here. Based on our son's age he was supposed to go into 1st grade, but in his old district he had just completed TK. We set up a meeting with the school to have our son placed in Kinder instead. We were very pleased with the whole process and after a meeting with the new principal she approved our son's enrollment into kindergarten instead. Our son absolutely loves his kindergarten class and his teacher. She is sweetest woman, has abundant energy and has been teaching at Lake over 20 years. The teachers, administration and pta have been very communicative and do an excellent job keeping the parents up to date on what's going on with the school. This year Lake received a new principal and assistant principal and we couldn't be happier. They are hands on and eager to make Lake the best school for our kids and it is clear that they really care. They have been proactive at making improvements in many aspects, including efficient drop offs, increasing extra curricular activities, focusing on best practices for testing and curriculum, educating students on emotional intelligence as well as academics, and most of all keeping the campus a safe place for the students amidst the pandemic so that the school can remain safely open. We are very pleased with Lake Elementary school and it has exceeded our expectations (even in comparison to our previous district which was Poway unified last year). Good school with some good teachers we were welcomed by the teachers on the first day of school. The kids all seem happy to be there and also the teachers except for the admin woman at the front desk she is rude. The only issue I see us the parking situation with the pickup and dropoff it gets so backed up if you get in line after 720am you're in trouble I guess you need to leave the house earlier to miss the parking lot traffic but good school overall. read more

My daughters teacher is great. The Lunch lady is super sweet. BUT every time I go to the office I feel like they just hate me and my kids! They are so rude and it makes me question the way they treat the children. I watched first hand them being mean to my son who is with me when I go sometimes. And instead of being helpful it's like they are upset you as a parent are even involved... My daughters teacher told me (a new parent to the school and state) that we aren't allowed to bring cakes for it was unhealthy and that birthdays are so frequent they would have a cake every week, so I spent some heart felt time making my daughter the ultimate made from fruit cake! I was then told by the ladies in the office that I could not give it to her. I just couldn't understand that part. I said ok that's fine I'll just wait for her lunch and give it to her then... To which they couldn't say no but instead got my girls teacher to ask me nicely to not wait. So I had to check her out and we had a little picnic at the park for her birthday instead of being able to share with her classmates. Today they have lost and found being donated to good will and I saw some School jackets that would fit my daughter and instead of just taking it I asked if I could have them (me being a normal parent trying to save what little money I have) only to be told that I need to put them back for I would be stealing.... Gee never have I heard of a thief ask for something... But that's fine. I guess I'm a criminal for asking. Instead of saying sure at the end of the day if no one has claimed them you can definitely have them since they are going to be donated anyways. But what do I know. I can't understand how our tax dollars are working for us here at this school. It's an elementary school not a jail or boarding school! I don't know what happened to these people in the past and I understand some parents can be difficult but when that attitude extends to the children there is a problem. Take a step back ladies in the office and ask yourself how it would feel on the other side being a single parent doing the best you can only to be treated like dirt ever time foot is stepped in the building. If you have the choice to choose a school then I hope this helps you if this was one of your choices. You will be dealing with rude people. Kindness and understanding towards parents and children goes a long way. I hope they take this review constructively. I doubt I'm the only parent who feels this way. read more

Good school, I went here, my oldest went here and now my middle child goes here. Good teachers, competent staff, clean and well kept. The principal is very nice and takes parents concerns seriously. Only negative thing is the traffic getting in and out- it takes forever! and the school start time is way too early ( but we are kind of fenced in on that one because of the other schools in the district :/) otherwise I reccomend this school to anyone read more

The educators are great. The aesthetics of the campus leave a lot to be desired, it looks like these schools haven't been modernized in decades. It's also overcrowded and surprisingly low-tech. It looks like they are getting more high-tech equipment which is definitely needed. My child's teacher is great and very collaborative. read more

Kids started school here a year ago. Just switched them to a 3 day home base school with 2 days at an actual school. Lake was just a horrible school! Everyone kept saying it was amazing. Then when I got settled into my home, the real truth came out! My neighbors would ask where my kids go to school and started telling me their horror stories about them taking their kids out. Told them it was going good so far, but thanks for letting me know. Well the office staff is so bitchy! They like to give personal caddy opinions. I told the Assistant principal that my son told me he was being bullied today at lunch, she told me & my husband that "Bully" was a strong word and that it takes longer than a day to consider it being a bullied. Then calls me saying my son was being a bully to someone at lunch & they are suspending him for TWO DAYS... I what?? So nothing was done about my child but he was suspended?? My boys were falling behind in class, requested twice on maybe taking an assessment test to see if there are alternative options, nothing! My oldest has a learning disability and has already been left behind in kinder, their option.. was to possibly flunk him again! They're rude, don't care about your child's education & last year they thought it was ok to talk about breast cancer to my 3rd grader. Like WTH! Those are things I'd like to personally discuss with my kids NOT YOU! ... if you take your child here, just be careful. Looks like they favor there! GOOD LUCK! read more

Not the greatest school I think is over rated or maybe is the teacher, too lazy, rude, nothing friendly, always miss communication, the homework too confusing even for the parents.
